Final Fantasy XI Gardening Guide By Jason Price (Character 'Sageheart' on Pheonix Server) Version 2.0 04/26/2004 ***** I. Introduction ***** This is my first attempt at an FAQ so please be kind in your critizisms. I've tried to compile as much information about gardening in FFXI from both my own experinces and from other sources. All feedback can be directed to the_image@hotmail.com. I get a lot of junkmail there so if you e-mail me make sure the Subject is something that lets me know its in reference to this FAQ. And to cover a few legal-ish things: feel free to this FAQ with others; but please do not submit this FAQ to other sites without my permission and do not make any changes to the contents of this FAQ. As of this first edition of the FAQ the only site that has my permission to display this FAQ is GameFAQs.com. If you wish to see this FAQ on other sites please let me know and I will look into submitting it to the site. Thanks. ***** II. Table of Contents ***** I. Introduction II. Table of Contents III. The Basics of Gardening ***** The act of gardening is actually a very simple process handled almost entirely by your Mog. You are in essence required only to decide when to start gardening and then occasionally check in on the plants until they are ready for fertilization or harvest. However, to get the best items you have put a lot more effort into gardening than this. A. How to Garden There are three items importanting to gardening: seeds, pots, and crystals. Gardening starts with the seeds. Seeds come in four types (Fruit, Herb, Grain, and Vegetable) and can be obtained from killing plant monsters or bought at the Auction House. The type of seed you use in gardening determines what kind of results you can grow. You can only plant seeds that are currently in your Mog House inventory. Pots, obviously, are where the seeds are planted in order to grow. Pots must be placed in your Mog House using the Layout command before any seeds can be planted. There are four types of pots that can be purchased or synthesized: Ceramic, Brass, Earthen, and Porcelain. To use pots for gardening, they must be in your Mog House inventory and placed within your Mog House using the Layout command. Crystals are used as fertilizer for your plants. When the plantis ready to be fertilized your Mog will let you know, and then you choose the type of crystal to use. The type of crystal used affects what items you can produce and the quantity of items produced. And of course, ther is always the option not to fertilize the plant at all. Most seed-types require fertilization only once during their growth cycle; except for Fruit seeds which require two fertilizations. You can only fertilize using crystals that are in your Mog House inventory. B. Lifecycle of Plants From the moment your Mog plants the seeds in a pot they begin to go through several stages indicating the level of growth of your plant: Seed: This is the point shortly after the seeds have been planted. No growth can be seen in the pot. Budding: The seed is just starting to grow and some green can be seen in the pot. There is a danger of the plant withering during this stage. The plant may need fertilization during this period. Growth: The seed is now a full-on plant and can be clearly seen within the pot. Dangers of withering is high if not carefully tended. The plant may need fertilization during this period. Flowering: The plant has now sprouted flowers based on the seed-type and is nearing its time for harvest. Harvest: The plant is glowing and filled with items to be harvested. Withered: The plant has died. Once withered there is no way to restore a plant. C. Gardening Commands In order to Garden you must use speical commands while in your Mog House. Most of these commands can also be used from your Rent-A-Rooms in other nations. Layout: Though not under the Gardening Menu this command is essential to gardening. Pots must be placed within your Mog House using the Layout command before seeds can be planted. Areas where pots can be placed will be highlighted by a grid on the floor of you. For more information on placing pots and the Layout Menu you should lookup information placing Furniture in your Mog House. The Layout Command cannot be accessed from Rent-A-Rooms. Plant Seeds: Used to choose which type of seed to plant in the selected pot. This Gardening command is only available for Empty Pots. Check Plants: Have your Moogle give you a report of the status of your plant. Feed Crystal: Used to fertilize the plant with a Crystal. This command can only be used at specific times during the plant's growth. Dry Plants: Stop the growth process of the plant permantly. This allows you to use the plant as decoration. Once dried no items can be harvest from a plant, and the process cannot be reversed. This command can only be used after there is visible growth. Harvest Plant: Harvest the plant's produce. One harvested the plant is lost and the pot it was in is emptied. This process is not reversable. This command can only be used once a plant is ready for harvest. Empty Pot: Empties the current contents of the selected pot. The plant, it's produce, and any seeds used are lost. The process is not reversable. This command can only be used after planting seeds. ***** IV. Types of Pots ***** There are four types of pots that can be used for gardening. Each pot has its own elemental properties that can affect the seeds planted in them. (Note: There is also a fifth flower pot, the Arcane Flowerpot, but not enough information is known about this pot to be included in the guide) |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Type of Pot | Element | Description | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Ceramic | Water | "A normal ceramic flowerpot." | | | | Purchesed in North San d'Oria - Near | | | | Ranperre Gate (D-8) | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Brass | Fire | "A sturdy flowerpot made of brass." | | | | Purchesed in Bastok Mines - Boytz's | | | | Knicknacks (H-7) | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Earthen | Earth | "A cheap earthenware flowerpot." | | | | Purchased In Windurst Waters - Ensasa's | | | | Catalyst Shop (H-8,9) | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Porcelain | Wind | "An expensive vase made of porcelain." | | | | Obtained from Synthesis: Level 61 Alchemy | | | | (Fire Crystal, Cermet Chunk) | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| ***** V. Types of Seeds ***** There are four types of seeds that can be planted for gardening. Each seed has an elemental property that affects its growth and produce based on the pot they are planted in and the type of crystal(s) used in fertilization. |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Type of Seed | Element | Description | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Fruit | Water | "Seeds for some kind of fruit." | | | | Can be harvested in East Ronfaure. | | | | Obtained from: Caveberry, Stalking | | | | Sapling, Strolling Sapling. | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Herb | Wind | "Seeds for some kind of herb." | | | | Obtained from: Slash Pine, Strolling | | | | Sapling, Wandering Sapling. | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Grain | Fire | "Seeds for some kind of grain." | | | | Obtained from: Slash Pine, Stalking | | | | Sapling, Strolling Sapling, Walking | | | | Sapling, Wandering Sapling. | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | Vegetable | Earth | "Seeds for some kind of vegetable." | | | | Obtained from: Slash Pine, Strolling | | | | Sapling, Walking Sapling, Wandering | | | | Sapling. | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| ***** VI. Gardening Produce ***** When gardening there comes a time when your moogle will ask you to fertilize your growing plant. You can choose to ignore this or use one of the crystals you have in your mog storage to help the plant continue to grow. What produce you can harvest is based on which crystal, if any, you can harvest. Following is the list of which produce you can earn from different crystals. The results of gardening are divided into columns, with the left-most column being the crystal used for fertilization and potential harvesting items listed to the right across the row. (Note: One type of items produced by gardening are colored rocks, such as blue rocks and red rocks. In the game some are labeled as rocks while others' labels refer to them as stones. For simplicity's sake all colored rocks/stones are referred to as rocks.) A. Elemental Stengths and Weaknesses ***** Elemental strengths and weaknesses play a key role in what kinds of items can be harvested. The chart below shows the strenghts and weaknesses of each element. Going clockwise on the chart shows what the given element is strong versus, while going counter-clockwise shows what it is weak versus. So, for example, Fire would be strong versus Ice and weak versus Water. The only variation are light and dark, which are opposing elements. Fire >> Ice // \\ Water Wind Light <--> Dark \\ // Lightning << Earth This chart is even more important if you are trying to grow crystals from your plants. In general, whichever crystal is used to fertilize your plant you can grow crystals based on what that crystal is strong versus. So if you use Fire Crystals to fertilize your plant, you will be able to grow Ice Crystals. (Note: For Fruit Seeds this is based only on the element of the first crystal used to fertilize the plant.) ***** VIII. Tips for Better Gardening ***** For those who simply wish to garden without care for what they grow, gardening is a simplistic process that is enjoyable to mess with between quests, missions, and experience hunting. But for those on a mission to grow that one item they need for a quest or synthesis recipe (or even to make money at the Auction House) Gardening must become a science. The pot used, the type of seed, the crystal(s) used, and even the day of the week when seeds are planted have an effect on what is produced. The following tips are for those ready to go beyond the casual indulgence of your "garden variety" adventurer (pardon the pun) and become true Master Gardeners. A. Choosing Your Seeds and Crystals Which seed you choose to plant has the single greatest effect on what items you are able to get. This is futher narrowed down according to which crystal is used to fertilize the seed. Beyond simply determing which items you can get, however, this also effects how fast the plant grows and how much you are able to harvest. In general, if the element of the crystal is weak versus the element of the seed the plant will grow faster. Likewise, if the element of the crystal is strong versus that of the seed then growth will be slower. B. Choosing Your Pots Knowing which pot to plant your seeds in can greatly help or hinder your ability to get a large yeild at harvest. If the element of the crystal used is weak versus the element of the pot, there tends to be a larger yeild of produce. Likewise, if the element of the crystal used is strong versus that of the pot then the yeild tends to be smaller. Pots are also believed to have affinities with certain regions. As such products associated with these same regions are more apt to produce a higher yield in pots of the same regionality. |------------------------------------------------| | Type of Pot | Region | Regional Items | |------------------------------------------------| | Ceramic | Ronfaure | Water Crystal | | | | Million Corn | | | | Sunflower Seeds | |------------------------------------------------| | Brass | Gustaberg | Fire Crystal | | | | Black Pepper | | | | La Theine Cabbage | |------------------------------------------------| | Earthen | Sarutabaruta | Earth Crystal | | | | Tarutaru Rice | | | | Kukuru Beans | | | | Pototo | | | | Saruta Cotton | |------------------------------------------------| | Porcelain | Jeuno | Wind Crystal | | | | Blue Peas | |------------------------------------------------| C. When to Plant, Fertilize, and Harvest Each day of the week in Vana'diel is associated with a particular element; and based on the day of the week you plant, fertilize, and harvest you can affect which items you get and how many items you harvest. The day of the week can be determined based on the colored dot in front of the clock which displays the hour, or by using the /clock command. The days of the week are: Firesday Earthsday Watersday Windsday Icesday Lightningsday Lightsday Darksday It seems as though if you plant seeds on the day of the week with the same element as the seeds, or on the day of the week which is strong versus that of the seed, you are more apt to get higher quality produce. This is also true of fertilizing the plant on days of the same element as the crystal or which are strong versus the element of the crystal. For those looking to get crystals, you are more apt to get crystals by planting on Lightsday or Darksday, or on days of the week which are weak versus the element of the seeds. Do not harvest on days that are weak versus the element of your Seeds and Crystals, otherwise you are likely to get lower quality items. If you are looking to grow colored rocks, you are most likely to get rocks by harvesting on days of the week that are strong versus the element of the seed and crystal used. D. Lunar Phases, Harvests, and You As time progresses in Vana'diel the moon goes through several phases, just as in the real world. When harvesting your plants it is important to consider the lunar phase, as the closer it is to a full moon the more of an item you are apt to harvest. You can check the current phase of the moon using the /clock command. The phases the moon goes through are: New Moon Waxing Crescent Moon Quarter Moon Waxing Gibbous Moon Full Moon Waning Gibbous Moon Last Quarter Moon Waning Crescent Moon (Note: Using the /clock command also toggles the on-screen clock which displays the current day of the week and time.) E. Check Your Plant Often Though this is unconfirmed, many believe that the more often you check your plant the better quality items you can get and the higher yield of items you can obtain. F. Never Leave an Empty Pot This is a personal observation of mine which I have not been able to confirm with others. I have no idea if this is valid but I would love to hear feedback from other gardeners out there. I believe that the more you garden there is an unseen Gardening Skill which slowly rises in the same way as weapon, magic, or guild skills. As this skill goes up it is easier to obtain higher quality items and higher yields of items. There are two ways of interpreting this theory: One is that the Gardening Skill is just an unseen guild skill that goes up no matter what type of seed is used. The more you garden the more successful you are at gardening with all types of seeds. The second is that gardening is a skill category all its own and you have an unseen ranking for each type of seed in the game. Each type of seed has its own skill level and goes up only when gardening with that type of seed. ***** IX. Moghancements ***** Adding furniture to your Mog House can give you an elemental feel that will result in a Moghancement. Moghancements can provide a variety of nifty effects effects such as less experience loss after dying and returning to your home point. Other Moghancements can increase your skills at synthesizing items, fishing, and (most importantly!) gardening. The full list of Moghancements are: |--------------|-------------------------------------------| | Moghancement | Effect | |--------------|-------------------------------------------| | | Less likely to lose materials from failed | | | synthesis with crytals of corresponding | | | element. | |--------------|-------------------------------------------| | Experience | Reduces experience lost of being killed | | | and returned to Home Point. Has no effect | | | on Raise spells. | |--------------|-------------------------------------------| | Fishing | Increases likelihood of obtaining items | | | while fishing. | |--------------|-------------------------------------------| | Region | Increases the amount of Conquest Points | | | earned while participating in your | | | your nations Conquest campaign. | |--------------|-------------------------------------------| | Gardening | Lowers the chances of your plants | | | withering while you are away. | |--------------|-------------------------------------------| Each item of furniture in the game has a speific, weighted elemental association. This elemental weight is added up in terms of how strong of an aura it gives off in your Mog House. The aura is measured and reported by your Moogle in the following increments: A faint elemental aura A powerful elemental aura Filled with elemental energy It is unknown if this elemental aura has an effect based on the strength or weakness of the aura versus the seeds, crystals, and pots used for gardening. Below is a list of all the furniture items, their elemental properties. Furniture which can give you the Gardening Moghancement are marked with the @ symbol. |--------------------------------------------| | Furniture | Element | | | | |--------------------------------------------| | Acolyte's Grief | Dark + 4 | |--------------------------------------------| | Ancient Blood | Dark + 3 | |--------------------------------------------| | Armoire | Water + 16 | |--------------------------------------------| | Armor Box | Water + 2 | |--------------------------------------------| | Autumn's End | Dark + 5 | |--------------------------------------------| | Book Holder | Light + 1 | |--------------------------------------------| | Bookshelf | Fire + 8 | |--------------------------------------------| | Brass Flowerpot | Earth + 1 | |--------------------------------------------| | Bronze Bed | Ice + 6 | |--------------------------------------------| | Bureau | Earth + 3 | |--------------------------------------------| | Cabinet | Water + 12 | |--------------------------------------------| | Ceramic Flowerpot | Earth + 1 | |--------------------------------------------| | Chest | Water + 4 | |--------------------------------------------| | Chiffonier | Water + ? | |--------------------------------------------| | Coffer | Water + ? | |--------------------------------------------| | Commode | Water + 16 | |--------------------------------------------| | Cupboard | Fire + 6 | |--------------------------------------------| | Desk | Wind + 5 | |--------------------------------------------| | Dresser | Light + 4 | |--------------------------------------------| | Earthen Flowerpot | Earth + 1 | |--------------------------------------------| | Flower Stand | Lightning + 2 | |--------------------------------------------| | Mahogany Bed | Light + 10 | |--------------------------------------------| | Maple Table | Earth + 8 | @ |--------------------------------------------| | Noble's Bed | Lighting + 12 | |--------------------------------------------| | Oak Bed | Wind + 5 | |--------------------------------------------| | Oak Table | Earth + 10 | @ |--------------------------------------------| | Porcelain Flowerpot | Earth + 2 | |--------------------------------------------| | Red Jar | Fire + 5 | |--------------------------------------------| | Royal Bed | Dark + 24 | |--------------------------------------------| | Rusty Bucket | Water+1 | |--------------------------------------------| | Secretaire | Earth+2 | |--------------------------------------------| | Simple Bed | Water+3 | |--------------------------------------------| | Star Globe | Dark + 10 | |--------------------------------------------| | Stationary Set | Ice + 3 | |--------------------------------------------| | Tableware Set | Lighting + 3 | |--------------------------------------------| | Tarutaru Desk | Earth + 4 | @ |--------------------------------------------| | Tarutaru Folding Screen | Ice + 6 | |--------------------------------------------| | Tarutaru Stool | Lightning+2 | |--------------------------------------------| | Tea Set | Water + 3 | |--------------------------------------------| | Waste Basket (EX) | Lightning + 2 | |--------------------------------------------| | Water Barrel | Water + 4 | |--------------------------------------------| | Water Jug | Water+3 | |--------------------------------------------| | White Jar | Light + 5 | |--------------------------------------------| | Wicker Box | Wind + 2 | |--------------------------------------------| | Workbench | Earth + 6 | @ |--------------------------------------------| | Yellow Jar | Earth+2 | |--------------------------------------------| ***** X. Gardening Item Use Guide ***** Most every item produced through gardening is used either as a quest item or as an ingredient in a guild recipe. Most are incredients for culinary or alchemy guild recipes. Below is a list of all the items that can be produced from gardening as shown in the tables above and what they can be used for. Item's that are used in quests have the associated Quest Titles listed first and are labelled "Quest." Thanks for checking out my FAQ. As I said, it is my first attempt so I hope is
useful and informative. Please let me know any suggestions or corrections you
may have. You can contact me by the e-mail listed at the beginning of this FAQ
or look for me online as Sageheart if you are on the Pheonix server. Also, any
information on what effect drying flowers for preservation has on gardening or
your mog house in general would be appreciated. For more information on
Gardening and gardening item use check out the Prima's official FFXI strategy
guide and ffxi.allakhazam.com. These two sources were invaluable in pulling all
this information together and filling in the gaps of my own personal knowledge
and observations. And last but not least: HAIL WINDURST!
