Melty Blood Act Cadenza Ver. B Windows Tag Battle/Team Battle team names list Author: Harleyquin Version 1.0 Table of Contents 1.Introduction 2.Brief description of team/tag battle mode 3.Team names + personal commentary 4.Acknowledgements 5.Legal Notice 6.Version History 7.Contact 1. Introduction This is my own reference sheet for team names in Melty Blood Act Cadenza which I've decided to convert to a FAQ. I'm using the original Japanese (change your webpage encoding) and converting most of the (obvious) katakana names into the equivalent English terms. I'm not going to bother doing translation since MirrorMoon finished their own translation patch ages ago (the game was released in 2007 after all). I haven't bothered using their patch so instead I'll give my own comments on the basis for some of the team names based on my own knowledge. Ecole and Type Moon took some trouble thinking up 253 different team names for the 22 characters and their pairings and a lot of the names come from older Type-Moon universe works. 2. Brief description of team/tag battle mode Jygting's guide briefly mentioned a few details regarding changes between the PS2 Ver. B Act Cadenza and the PC port. I'll just add a little more on the team/tag battle mode itself. Tag battle mode Short description: Think KOF2003, but with rounds, 2 characters and no LDM-like restrictions on characters. No change-over attacks, swapped out character is invincible but partner running onto the stage is vulnerable to attacks. Long description: 2 characters per team, number of rounds required to win depends on your options selected. Both characters share the same magic circuit (just like the regular Hisui/Kohaku player option). Players can opt to swap out their characters at any time during the battle provided their character is standing, once swapped the resting character regenerates health slowly up to the maximum allowed (same manner as manual heat/blood heat activation). Partner swapped in always runs on screen and can initiate attacks almost immediately upon entry. If time runs out and no knockouts have been achieved, HP of the present character on stage determines the winner. If sudden death is activated, only one character must be knocked out for a team to claim victory. Team battle mode Short description: 2vs2 Battle Royale. Long description: Same setup as tag battle, only both characters for both teams are onscreen. It is possible to surround a character from both sides and knock the stuffing out of him/her/it with chain attacks. Arc drives and Last Arcs can affect both opponents at once depending on positioning. If you have gamepads connected, have fun with friends playing on the same/opposing sides for either mode. 3. Team names + personal commentary As mentioned above, I use the original Japanese text as much as possible, the only exception being obvious English-based katakana which I've converted for simpler presentation. Numbers with a dash behind each name are my comments. There is no difference between character selection order for team names e.g. Shion/Arc and Arc/Shion both have the same team name, hence the 253 team name total. Shion/Ciel: No Life, No Bride(?) -1 Shion/Akiha: お嬢様と錬金術師 Shion/Hisui: キャラ的に被っています -2 Shion/Kohaku: 遠野家の地下の二大博士 -3 Shion/T. All work, no play. Neither of them are getting married anytime soon. That or I mistook this for pride but Shion's personality contradicts the "pride" reading. 2. Common lack of character development. 3. Originally from Re-Act, Tohno Shiki win quote vs. Shion. Developed more in later games. 4. Shion's birthplace and Miyako's outfit 5. Can't figure out what the code is in English. 6. Shion's (blood) appetite and Nero's gluttony 7. Virus and Kuranke (Patient). 8. Likely Shion's comment on her chosen partner. 9. Re-act refeLence, play the arcade modes. 10. See 8, difference being biology. 11. I'm stumped here, one word is German and the other is difficult to read and look up. 12. See 9, different pairing. The alliance grows each game. 13. Shion talks a lot more than Kishima so... 14. See 8 and 10, Shion's ultra-rational mind probably can't fathom what her partner is. Kagetsu Tohya reference, the gimmick from the orginal Melty Blood has not carried over to current instalments. 2. Mutual personality trait. 3. Miyako makes weird decision for choosing martial arts teachers. 4. Melty Blood/Re-act story mode reference. 5. Easy decision for the programmers. 6. When exactly did robots acquire a taste for blood?! 7. Looks like Arcueid figured out who really was responsible for carving her up... 8. Linked to the Ciel/Satsuki combo, oddly neither character sees each other much in the games and the source material. 9. Mk.1 Cat team 10. Play on the anime/manga adaptation. 11. Another ridiculously hard katakana to decipher. 12. White Len's arcade mode + mutual choice of friends 13. This is an in-joke I haven't quite figured out. 14. This is a recurring gag for lots of N.A.C pairings, just as well Inui Ichigo isn't featured. Ciel: Ciel/Ciel: 埋葬の代行者 Ciel/Akiha: 峰より華麗 -1 Ciel/Hisui: Shoot!Shoot!Shoot! -2 Ciel/Kohaku: Curryを巡る闘争 -3 Ciel/T. Obvious enough given their character specialties in the games so far. 3. Melty Blood/Re-act G-Akiha route story mode + Kagetsu Tohya Kohaku side story 4. Tsukihime game + manga adaptation quote. 5. Miyako's comment most likely 6. Possible reference to Ciel's past 7. Tsukihime reference. 8. See Arc/Satsuki, eagle and mouse pairing. 9. Re-act Len arcade mode reference. 10. An age and Melty Blood character design common trait. 11. Not a dream I'd want to be a part of. 12. See 10, a reference to Kagetsu Tohya's side story. Not sure what the katakana is 3. Recurring gag about Nero's appetite, this one's highlights Akiha's self-control. 4. Shion doesn't strike me as too ladylike but that's just me 5. Kohaku didn't refine her programming instructions enough... 6. Re-act arcade mode Akiha route. 7. See 5, in particular vs. Satsuki win quote. 8. No surprises here. 9. Lady's leisure club, personality edition. 10. Even less surprise here. Hisui: Hisui/Hisui: お屋敷の使用人 Hisui/Kohaku: 翡翠&琥珀 -1 Hisui/T. Boring, but the easiest name to settle on for the developers. 2. Servant mentality complex... 3. Iron-fisted child and curtain. 4. The 1st of the Lewis Carroll references. 5. The 1st of several Nero clothes tastes and fetishes 6. The 2nd katakana part is difficult to decipher. 7. The 2nd Lewis Carroll reference. 8. Possible Tsukihime reference or a potential long-term outcome between these 2. 9. Common personality trait. 10. Common personality trait + living address 11. Tsukihime 読本/Tsukihime doujin 日和 reference, see the short strip once and the joke becomes clear. 12. - Wizards, damn Aozaki's katakana choices are hard to decipher. 13. See Ciel/W. Len, also a reference to the Kagetsu Tohya main story. 14. Hisui has a lot more speaking lines in Kagetsu Tohya. 15. Another smoking gag with N.A.C Kohaku: Kohaku/Kohaku: 割烹着の悪魔 Kohaku/T. Melty blood story mode + Miyako Re-act arcade mode reference. 3. The 1st of numerous playwright/director gags for Warakia. 4. Not sure how V. Shion gained admission to this committee. 5. Not a pleasant thought. 6. Tsukihime game reference. 7. Not going to happen anytime soon, nor would Kohaku be too happy with the arrangement. See Kohaku arcade mode dialogue with N. Shiki. 8. Re-act vs. Satsuki win quote. 9. Nicer ending picture in this game compared to Re-act. 10. No surprises here. 11. Rivals? Plenty to fight over then. 12. Another smoking gag, I reckon Kohaku can bring out Johnny for a good laugh. Tohno Shiki: T. Shiki/T. Shiki: 七つの夜の月 T. Shiki/Kishima: 水月鮮影 T. Shiki/N.A.C: 666分割 -10 Shiki notes: 1. Compare Shiki's school outfit with the typical male clothes worn by men shortly after 1949 in the Chinese mainland. 2. Tsukihime reference + Re-act Shiki arcade mode reference. 3. vs. Shiki win-quote, but this likely goes both ways... 4. I'm guessing Apotheosis for the 1st katakana. 5. vs. Shiki winquote for Akiha V. reference. 6. ...so says Mech Hisui. 7. ...so says Satsuki. Our oblivious protagonist probably thinks otherwise. 8. Go through W. Len's arcade mode in this game for the original cat food reference. 9. Aozaki generic win-quote reference, role assignment becomes obvious later. See N. Shiki/Aozaki. 10. Looks like Shiki went a little too wild in his big fight with Nero... Miyako: Miyako/Miyako: 突撃China Girl Miyako/Warakia: 監督、次はエコールものですが? -1 Miyako/Nero: 大熊猫のいない動物園 -2 Miyako/V. Shion: Chinese Market, Supergirl Miyako/R. -6 Miyako/N.A.C: こんとんのライバル -7 Miyako notes: 1. Another recurring playwright gag for Warakia. 2. See 4, but the animal reference here reveals Nero has never travelled to China in the Tsukihime universe. 3. Not sure what new moves she can pick up from this practice dummy. 4. Tsukihime character material reference + Melty blood manga reference. This quote and several others should make it clear Miyako is not referring to the animal. 5. Miyako's numerous run-ins with Neko Arc... 6. Decisions, decision for Miyako. Not all that bad either way with Kishima at her side. 7. Not quite sure if Miyako has ever met Nero formally over the storyline and subsequent works. Warakia: Warakia/Warakia: Night on the Blood Lair Warakia/Nero: Elder Title(?) -1 Warakia/V. Hisui: Killbot horror show -3 Warakia/N. Reference to their positions in the dead Apostle hierarchy. 2. The latter is one of the endings for the Melty Blood story mode, the former is only revealed in the latest instalment. 3. The Grand Guignol is a large-scale horror gore show. There's quite a few movie gags here but I can't figure out all of the katakana names. 4. Not sure if Warakia can figure out a casting role for this one. 5. See 7, likely Warakia's opinion. 6. Warakia's outfit doesn't look that out of place at a posh casino... 7. See 5. Also see Len/N.A.C. Nero/R. See 1, although both parties aren't too picky on quality. 3. Not quite sure who's making this comment. 4. Reference to Satsuki's arcade route in this game. 5. 666+1 circle of friends 6. One of two cradle-snatcher jokes. 7. Nero's intro in the G666 boss rush mode just about sums up this comment. V. Shion: V. Shion/V. Len: Microworld designers -6 V. Shion/Kishima: 鬼と吸血鬼 V. Shion/N.A.C: ... I'm guessing Dessert noise, Lost world for this string of katakana. 2. Common trait of their character winpose portraits 3. ...says V. Shion. Doesn't indirect aiding and abetting count for something? 4. Motive behind the 路地裏同盟 establishment. 5. Surprising V. Shion still has enough sanity to make the statement. 6. Not sure what the microworld refers to, although their outfits may have something to do with it. 7. The only censored word in all of the quotes, I speculate some form of sexual harassment requiring an immediate apology. R. Arcueid: R. Arc/R. Arc: 堕ちた真祖 R. Arc/Akiha V: Two fanatic エンプレス -1 R. Arc/M. Shiki: Doomsday R. Arc/Satsuki: V.V.V -3 R. Arc/Len: 魔王と夢魔 R. Arc/N. -5 R. Arcueid notes: 1. I'm guessing Empress for the last word, which converts to Two fanatic empresses. Fitting description. 2. First of the Demon lord army gags. 3. No idea what this stands for, but there's a resemblance to Kinoko Nasu's D.D.D series. 4. Both parties have something to negate rather than agree on. 5. Both 小物 meanings likely apply here. Akiha V/M. Hisui: ... Not sure why Akiha V. would want a valuation... 2. Reference Re-act Akiha V. arcade mode 3. Not sure how Akiha V. ended up in either cat's good books... 4. See 2, last stage. 5. See Akiha/W. Len, now the tsundere version. 6. Back to the smoking gag... Mech Hisui: M. Hisui/M. Hisui: MxMxMxM -1 M. Hisui/N. Mech Hisui notes: 1. Completely clueless as to what this means. 2. Refer Hisui/T. Shiki, only inverted. 3. Considering Len only has one spoken line in Melty Blood and Kagetsu Tohya each, this is an understatement. 4. Reference Re-act arcade mode introduction. 5. See Hisui/Kishima. Nanaya Shiki: N. Shiki/N. Len: Unbalance Whippy Happy? -4 N. Shiki/Kishima: Red Lion N. Shiki/N.A.C: ... Likely a reference to vs. Nanaya Satsuki win-quote and the original Tsukihime plotline. 2. Nanaya must have lost count during his berserk spree in the source material. T. Shiki Arc-Drive reference. 3. Assigning who's who for jobs is really obvious here. 4. See W. Len's ending picture and subsequent dialogue... 5. N.A.C's bad breath reference (down, down+A) Yumiduka Satsuki: Satsuki/Satsuki: 薄幸吸血少女 -1 Satsuki/Len: 夜を走るふたり -2 Satsuki/N. Arc: げっちゃ2 Satsuki/Aozaki: 新米吸血鬼、怒られる -3 Satsuki/W. Len: 第三次・路地裏同盟 -4 Satsuki/Kishima: 敵・即・極!-5 Satsuki/N.A.C: カオスなDeja Vu -6 Satsuki notes: 1. Tragicomic seems a fitting description. See dialogue between N. Arc/N.A.C vs. Satsuki in arcade mode. 2. Kagetsu Tohya + Re-act Satsuki arcade mode reference 3. Re-act campaign mode, numerous Aozaki comments regarding the numerous vampire characters. 4. W. Len dialogue with Neko-Arc should have made this obvious. 5. Shinsengumi reference... 6. Derived from Satsuki's campaign mode. Len: Len/Len: 黒い夢魔 Len/N. See N.Arc/W. Len. 2. Looks like a wordplay on the Senjougahara battlefield, also see Warakia/N.Arc, Warakia/N.A.C Neko Arc: N. Arc/N. Arc: Sand Bacchus -1 N. Arc/Aozaki: カニ対エビ -2 N. Arc/W. Len: 白猫とモザイク猫 -3 N. Arc/Kishima: ねねねの軋間 -4 N. Arc/N.A.C: Great old cats -5 N. Arc notes: 1. I'm positive I got this right, or it could be sandwich bacchus for all I know. 2. N. Arc's air-rocket move + Aozaki's hair colour for possible sources. 3. So, which description really fits? W. Len first quotes the N.Arc description in her arcade mode. 4. I'm lost here... 5. Great Cat Garden Melty Blood representatives. Aozaki Aoko: Aozaki/Aozaki: Magic Gunner, Miss Blue Aozaki/W. Len: Escape. -1 Aozaki/Kishima: 沙門と弁天 -2 Aozaki/N.A.C: 禁煙してくれない? -3 Aozaki notes: 1. I would guess Escape action, but the katakana doesn't quite fit. Something to do with Aozaki's original role in W.Len's creation. 2. Saint/Sophist or Monk/Muse, reader's choice. 3. Smoking gags continue, Aozaki has personal reasons for getting N.A.C to quit as well. White Len: W. Len/W. Len: 白い夢魔 W. Len/Kishima: 氷と焔 -1 W. Len/N.A.C: Dandy Chaos and Tsundere Lolita -2 W. Len notes: 1. Thermocouple joke. 2. The Nero outfit joke mentioned earlier + W. Len's personality (along with suggestive illustrations+W.Len dialogue). Finally N.A.C finds his smoking buddy! Odd that Kishima would still favour earthly vices despite his pilgrimage quotes. Neko Arc Chaos: N.A.C/N.A.C: Super Sand Bacchus N.A.C notes: 1. See N.Arc/N.Arc. 4. Contact There's a lot of content requiring clarification in this guide (anything with (?) or untranslated katakana for starters) so anyone who actually bothered reading this to the end and with a desire to show me up for being ignorant can email corrections and addendum to snookercue84[ampersand]hotmail[dot]com. Replace the words in brackets with their appropriate symbols, there's enough spam in the world as it is and I hate it just as much as the next person.
