I never thought that in the years I have been coming to this website (since late 1995) I would ever contribute something... but, here it is. By all means this faq is far from complete and any help would be nice. Some might ask why I am writing a faq for a five year old game and I would just answer like this. "It helps me get the feel for writing future faqs" and "this game is pretty tough and now that the sequel is out the first one is getting pretty popular." Anyways, if you are one of those that needs help in this game (and does not condone cheating) then feel free to browse away. ************************************************************************ 4. Version History: Version 1.00(Alpha). This is my first version of this faq so far. Everything is fresh and rough but expect updates continually. Version 1.01: a bit of an update but nothing major. Changed the wacky layout plus I fixed up the weapons section. Updates will be going slow for the next week because I have exams to study for, but afterwards when school ends, I will probably finish this before the midpoint of the month of June. ************************************************************************ 5. The Basics: --Minimum Requirements Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 95 (Windows NT recommended) Pentium 90MHz (166Mhz or higher recommended) 16Mb RAM (32Mb recommended) 2x CD-ROM (4x recommended) 256 Color SGVA 640x480 Sound Blaster or 100% Compatible (16-bit recommended) --Starting a game: (This was lifted from the manual README file that came with my game) Main Menu From the main menu you can choose Start to play a new game, options to set game options and customize setting, or Editor to modify game levels or create your own. Use the arrow keys to navigate through the menus. To select and item or go to the next menu, hit Enter when your bullet is pointing on the item you wish to select. To exit the current menu and go back to the previous menu, hit ESC. Start Menu Single Player From the start menu, you have the option to play a single player game, a multiplayer game, or to view a demo. From the single player option, you can choose to start a new game from level 1, load a specific level that you may have created in the editor, load a saved game so you can start where you left off, or try a challenge level. Starting a new game will start you at level 1. As long as you meet the level goals, it will continue on to the next level. If you die before reaching your goal, you can hit space bar to start that level over. The Load Level option lets you load a specific level, like one you may have created in the editor, or one your friend made or one you download from the internet. The Load Game option lets you pick one of your saved games that will take you back to the beginning of the level that you saved and restore the weapons you had at the start of the level. The Challenge option takes you to the challenge menu. The challenge games have a variety of different scoring modes and different goals. The first option on the challenge menu is The Gauntlet. It is similar to the new game option on the single player menu. It will start you with the first challenge level, and let you play through challenge levels in order. The other options on the challenge menu will take you to a directory with the type of games you wish to play including Timed levels, goal levels, Capture the Flag levels and Checkpoint levels. At the beginning of a challenge level, the mission goal will be displayed below your score. To see the goal again you can hit F5 at any point during the level. Timed levels show a clock that counts down to zero. It will keep track of the number of kills or the number of flags captured, according to the mission goal of the level. Goal levels show a clock that counts up from zero. It will keep track of how long it took you to meet your goal. Capture the flag levels are similar to the Goal levels, a timer counts up from zero and keeps track of how long it took you to capture the flag. The checkpoint levels are similar to the racing style games where you have a set amount of time to run a course. Some flags will have a bonus time which will add time to the clock. The goal is to get as many flags as possible before time runs out. All of the challenge levels keep a high score list. If you beat the best time, or high score, you can enter your name and it will save it with the high scores for that particular level. Multiplayer Before beginning a multiplayer game, users should set the options for their network, as described above in the Options:Multiplayer section. Hosting a Multiplayer Game One of the gamers will need to serve as the game's host. Users can choose Host Game from the Multiplayer menu. A dialog will come up with an edit field where the host can enter a description of the game. This description will be shown to players who are attempting to join a game. After a description is entered, a dialog box will appear with options for the multiplayer game. At the top there is chat window which shows the players name followed by their chat text. Players can chat before the game begins to discuss game options, what level to play, etc. Below that is a window showing the players who have connected to the game, with their name and color. The host can choose to drop players from this list by selecting the player and clicking on the Drop button. Below the connected players, is a list of the available multiplayer levels. Click on the name of the level you wish to play. To the right are the scoring options for the game. You can choose a time limit and set the number of minutes, you can select a Kill limit and set the number of kills or you can select both, which will end the game when either the time is up, or someone has reached the kill limit. If neither is selected, it will default to a kill limit of 10. Up to 16 players can connect to a game, however, it is recommended to keep the number down to 8 or less. Once the host has determined that enough players have joined, they can click on the Start button and the level will load on everyone's machine. Joining a Multiplayer Game Gamers looking to join a multiplayer game may select Join Game from the Multiplayer menu. A secondary menu offers users the option to browse, or connect to a specific server. If a gamer selected Browse, it will scan your local network for games that are starting and it will display the description of the game that the host has entered. Gamers wishing to join that game simply click on the title and they will be automatically linked up. When playing on the internet, or if the network you are using does not allow broadcasting across routers, select the name or address of the server with which you wish to connect. Users with TCP/IP can enter the IP address of the server in the Connect To edit box and then hit Enter to connect to that system. If that computer has a registered domain name, enter the host name of the server and hit Enter to connect. To find the IP address of your machine in Windows NT, you can run ipconfig from the command prompt. From Windows 95, you can run winipcfg to display the same information. If you have a network card, this address will probably be the same every time. If you are using a modem to connect to the internet, this address will probably be different every time you dial up. Gamers using IPX must enter the IPX address including the network address and the node address with which you wish to connect. If you are on a large network, you will need to find out the network address of the segment you are connected to. If it's a simple network, you can try using 00000000 as the network number. The node number is the hardware address of your network card. You can find the physical ethernet address in Windows NT by running ipconfig from the command prompt, or in Windows 95, run winipcfg to show the same information. Options Menu The options menu contains 6 categories of options that can be set to customize the game and tune performance. Video The one option in the video menu is the gamma setting. If your screen is too dark, use this option to increase the gamma. If it looks too washed out, then reduce the gamma setting. Audio The mixer option allows you to set the relative volumes for different sounds in the game. There are 10 different sound groups. When the bullet is pointing to the sound category, you can use the arrow keys to adjust the volume. If you want to reset all of the volumes to the default levels, choose the last menu option The Sound Test option in the audio menu is mostly just for fun. You can play all of the sounds that are in the game by hitting keys 0-9 and A-Z. When you press the Tab key, it will cycle to the next bank of sounds. Select exit when you are done. Controls The controls menu allows you to customize settings for you keyboard and mouse. The keyboard menu will allow you to keys to actions. The mouse settings menu will let you do the same for your mouse buttons. The controls menu also allows you to set how fast your guy turns and how sensitive the mouse is. Multiplayer On the multiplayer options screen, you can enter the name that will be shown for your character during the multiplayer games. You can also select the color of the clothes your character wears, to help you identify your player from the other players in the game. The protocol option lets you select which network protocol you will use for multiplayer games. If you are playing on the Internet, select TCP/IP. If you are playing on a local area network, you need to know what protocol is being used. If it's a Novell network, select IPX, otherwise its likely a TCP/IP network. The connection option is used to tune the performance of a network game. Select whether you are using a modem, ISDN connection or your network connection type. Performance The performance options by default are all enabled. If you have a slower machine and want to trade off some of the cool features in order to get higher frame rates, you can turn off some of the effects here. They are listed in order from the ones that use the most CPU power to the ones that don't use as much. If you disable the transparency, you will get the greatest performance gain, but the fire and smoke will be a solid color so you can't see what is behind them. If you disable the 3D lighting, the 3D objects in the game will not get lighter when they walk under the street lamps and other light sources in the game. The particle effects are things like the blood spurts, bullet casings and shotgun shells. Dynamic volume makes the sounds originating close to you louder, and distant sounds are not as loud which helps you determine how close a hostile is, or can help you determine the distance of a missile. Disabling the ambient sounds may help you if you are low on memory. These are the sounds like wind, crickets, car alarms and other sounds in the levels that add character to the level. Difficulty The slider bar in the difficulty menu has 4 color zones and ranges from 1 to 11. The numbers adjust how accurate the hostels are when they shoot, how often they shoot, and how much damage you take. The different color zones represent physically different level layouts for the single player games. The green is the easy level layout, the yellow is the medium difficulty, red is hard, and purple is the nightmare mode. In the easier levels you may have more hit points, more ammo, there are fewer enemies, and they use less powerful weapons against you and there are more power ups. As you move up to the harder levels, the weapons are more powerful and there are a greater number of enemies with more powerful weapons. --Basic Tips and Hints: *Save, save, save. Remember that you can save anywhere. While you might be caught up in the fun of senselessly killing things, you should save so you don't have to annoying restart a level when you die. *Execute everyone! Although they die on their own its usually easier to execute them on the spot just so you won't have to backtrack or anything (plus its the american way, why let your opponent suffer when you can brutally slaughter them right their on the spot). *Strafe! This might seem like common sense but like in any goop first person shooter, strafing saves your life. Not only can you dodge quick objects like missles and bombs, it also gives you a better chance at dodging bullets, throws the enemy off, and lets you counterattack without changing your position and/or aim. *DUCK AND COVER! When someone is shooting a missle at you, don't bother dodging it, just duck (default numpad 0). Ducking makes the shot COMPLETELY miss you and may even hit the enemies ally. The only time you should not duck is if its a homing missle (not confirmed but I don't think homing missles can hit you if you duck) or if the missle can hit a wall and damage you (then you run). WARNING: One thing to note, though, is if people are shooting at you while you are ducking, and you get hit, then you WILL stand up and probably get hit by the missle (ouch). *Press em'. When someone is lobbing grenades at you, don't bother dodging them just advance on the enemies position (especially if your dealing with molotov cocktail throwers). The enemy will not throw an object at you at close range, but will instead run away in order to get into a more favorable position. *Flank em'. This game is not about morals. If you can, you should always get your enemy from the back. Remember, you can run with the machine gun and a few shots before they know what happened could mean saving some good health. *Patience is the key to victory. Take the levels slow and scan out where your enemies are. If you just run through a level guns a blazin' you WILL die. Take cover behind objects, find narrow places to shoot people and kill grenade lobbers, missle launching, and spread shot users. *Flame Retarded. When you catch on fire, don't fret, catch everyone else on fire. You can spread your flame by simply touching your opponents. ************************************************************************ 5. Walkthrough: Please note that this walkthrough was written as if being played on medium level #6. --Home 10/17/97 The earth is hungry. Its heart throbs and demands cleansing. The earth is also thirsty... Population: 24 Hostiles: 20 Objective: Kill 90% of the hostiles. Strategy: You begin this level in the gates of your little one story shack (kind of funny that their is a dog house but no dog). Immediately head to the side of your house (by the dog house) to pick up a shotgun and fifteen rounds. Go to your left and towards the back of your house to pick up some health (about 20). By this time, two brown cops (they all have names but their is no point in mentioning them, you can find out their real names in the "enemies" section) should bust into your joint. Whip out your new "Boomstick" and blow them a new hole. From there, step slightly out of your fence, hug it, then run like mad to your left until you get behind the truck. Lob a grenade at the man with the rocket launcher and sweep the area of the guy behind the police car and the man who usually stands beside the truck. Collect the armor behind the car. Go south and to your right slowly and take out the blue cop. Grab the box (should be aboutfour grenades and a pair of molotovs) and ambush the man to your north who has his back turned on you. Take out the other missle launcher man and carefully lob a grenade at the blue swat officer with the spread gun. Advance on him slowly, his spread gun can take huge chunks of health away if you are not careful. From the side of the house, lob cocktails (no, not the shrimp kind) at the other cocktail throwers then clean out this large field of hostiles. Grab the health and ammo powerups on the very right edge of the screen and advance your way north along the main road. When you come up to the large house, a shotgun toting cop, woman, and a brown cop await you. The shotgun cop is annoying, as is the brown cop who ambushes you behind a tree (you won't see him until it is too late). Use your machine on the blue officer and when a bunch of people run out of the house in panic, throw any remaing cocktails into the group (sometimes your enemies actually RUN TO the onlookers using them as human shields). After you partake in the carnage clean up the rest of the area (even if their are innocents about hehe) and hit F1 to exit the level. --The Truckstop 10/17/97 Blessed are the meek for they make easy targets. Population: 32 Hostiles: 28 Objective: Kill 80% of the hostiles. Strategy: Ah, now this is a fun and twisted level full of cop killing and barrel bashing(tm). Come down the main road slowly to lure the brown cop and the grenade chucker into view. Kill both of them with your shotgun, then equip the machine gun. Go north behind the tree and shoot the gas barrels until they explode (if you did not alert the cop stupidly hiding here, he should blow up after the initial explosion). Moving forward will trigger two cops to flank you, one fromthe north and the other from the east (although sometimes they are together). Kill both of them and lob a grenade at the two brown suits positioned behind the pickup truck. Grab the health from the area with the barrels you blew up and head to the donut shop to your north use the main road as to not trigger any more hostiles). Blow up the lone barrel here (from as far away as you can muster) then slowly head to the buildings opening. Three cops will stupidly come out and get burned by the fire. Continue heading north and lob as many cocktails as you can into the large coalition of troops (guarded by a rocket launcher man) and head to the east toward the gas station area. The gas station area has a HUGE amount of soldiers around (mostly shotgunners and grenade guys) but there are our favorite little barrels hanging around (some are invisible as they are blocked out by the gas pumps). Blow up a couple of barrels including the ones that are gathered together to cause a huge chain reaction. Savor the carnage (I have'nt seen this many people get burned since comedy centrals "best of celebrity roasts" special. God that sucked, leave me alone) and press F1 at your leisure. --The Outskirts 10/17/97 The air ripens with the odors of the dead and dying. It smells like... victory. Pop: 30 Hostiles: 27 Objective: Kill 90% of the hostiles Strategy: You start this level right in the midst of the chaos. Immediatly kill the grenade chucker and the other guy on the main road (with the shotgun preferably). Head to the right down the dirty road killing the cop and the poor bastards who where stupid enough to leave the safety of the building. Blow up the barrels (from a good distance) and watch as a few more people burn. To the south east is a grenade guy and a cop advancing on your position. Cocktail em' and go to the north across the bridge. Try and take out the swat without taking too much damage and get rid of the two cops across the mountainy bend. From their, go north and completely circumnavigate the map taking out the grenade chuckers first. The rest of the map is suprisingly pretty easy, just becareful of the cops that are hiding. ************************************************************************ 7. Pickups I rate all the weapons from a scale of 1-5, one being the lowest and five being the highest. Power: Represents the overall killing power of the gun (how many hits it takes to kill a five means it's an automatic kill) Ammo: how plentiful the ammo is, the speed at which it is used, and who easy it is to find ammo. Range: how far the weapon shoots Reliability: Overall usefullness of the guns Notes: my personal notes on the weapon --Machine Gun: Power: 2 Ammo: 5 Range: 4 Reliability: 3 Notes: Not exactly a pickup (you start with it all the time) this is your default gun and should be the most common used one. It has infinite rounds but suprisingly for an assault gun it is pretty damn weak. Only use it for long range sniping purposes, otherwise in a serious gun fight your pretty much dead. Remember to strafe a lot when you use this and doing so turns it into an effective crowd controller (I call this the "Lawnmower" technique). --Shotgun: Power: 1-4 (depends on your distance from the enemy) Ammo: 2 Range: 3 Reliability: 2-4 (good when you have plentiful ammo, otherwise this weapon will leave you in the dust too quickly). Notes: Ah, the good ol' Boomstick. This is a pretty powerful that has a nice spread when you shoot it. You should use this weapon whenever you get it but I suggest you conserve it for crowded areas (as its ammo is limited and you use up rounds fast). Two or three shots pointblank will kill most units but its power is GREATLY reduced at a long range. Another downside is that you cannot run while firing. --Spreadshot (aka. BEST DAMN GUN!) Power: 4 (same as shotgun but kills things at almost 3x the speed) Ammo: 1 Range: 3 Reliability: 2-4 (same as shotgun, good when you have the ammo) Notes: This is like an automatic version of the shotgun. Its power is SUPER high, it fires FASTER than the machine gun, AND you can run while firing! But all this comes at a price. It uses up bullets faster than Rosie O Donald goes through a box of... eh, never mind (fine I'll stop). It uses buckshot rounds. --Grenade Power: 5 Ammo: 5 Range: 4 Reliability: 2 This is not that effective of a weapon. Use it only in narrow areas as it tends to overshoot your target (as in resulting in you missing your mark). It does make an effective barrel blower... upper (whew, saved myself there). Tl2000 tells me that his friend knows how to hit enemies terribly easy with this but I will never know how he does it. --Rocket Launcher Power: 5 Ammo: 3 Range: 5 Reliability: 3 Notes: An okay weapon. Its accuracy is terrible, though, and requires you to tweak your aim while your enemy pumps you full of rounds. Shoot an object like a tree or truck instead of trying to hit your opponent head on (it always results in an instant kill). The other piece of ammo for the rocket launcher is the seeker missle which homes in on the target (requiring you to just shoot). Be wary though, it homes in on the closest target and not always the one you want to hit. Tl2000 emailed me and said that this weapon is best used for sniping because of it can shoot across the entire screen. He also says that you should never shoot a homing missle offscreen because it has a chance of doubling back and hitting you. --Molotov Cocktail Power: 5 Ammo: 2 Range: 4 Reliability: 4 Notes: Probably the second best weapon. Although it has the same inaccuracy as the grenade the cocktail has a cooler ability. When it hits the ground, it slowly spreads, capable of hitting every target in a good area (really fun in the Parade of Disasters level). --Napalm Launcher (the REAL name is grenade gun) Power: 5 Ammo: 1 Range: 3-4 (it has a short range but the fire spreads in a long line) Reliability: 2 (you can't rely on this weapon in wide open areas and its a rare weapon) Notes: When I first saw this weapon I thought it was like a miniature nuclear missle launcher or something. Fires of a grenade but when it blows up it leaves a pretty long trail of flames. Anybody caught in the destructive path of this weapon will definatley be paying some prices. I rank it as number three only because you have to aim it like the rocket launcher and you can't shoot it over low objects. --Flame Thrower Power: 5 Ammo: 1 Range: 3 Reliabilty: 2 Notes: An okay weapon to say the least. When it is fired, it shoots a jet of flames that ignite anyone unfortunate to get in your path. Although it kills instantly, it has a short range and uses up ammo in a finger snap. --Mines Power: 1-5 Ammo: 2 Reliability: 2-4 Notes: Thanks to tl2000 for information on the mines. The three types are: proximity (explosive), timed and proximity (shrapnel). The last type has greater range but less damage. They can be lots of fun in crowded areas like the gettho or city. ************************************************************************ 8. Enemies COMING SOON ************************************************************************ 9. Cheats CHEATER! I don't condone cheating unless the game has already been beaten. This game is nicely balanced and pretty challenging but cheat if you want. In order to access these codes you must TYPE them in at ANYTIME while you are playing (don't add the colons or quote marks though ":"). "lobitfar": Gives you 10 cocktails and grenades. "explodarama": Gives all explosive weapons. "gimmedat": All weapons and full ammo "carrymore": Doubles your carrying capacity (the only cheat I would even think of using). "thebestgun": Gives you spray cannon (or spread gun) and full ammo for it. "hesstillgood": Revives your character when he dies. "firehurler": Flamethrower with full ammo. "flamenstein": Gives flamethrower, Napalm launcher, and full molotov cocktails. "dawholeenchilada": Full ammo for currently equipped weapon. "thickskin": Gives full armor "sternomat": Gives grenade gun full ammo "iamsolame": Gives invincibilty (seriously) "crotchbomb": Gives mines "titaniii": Missle Launcher with full missles. ************************************************************************ 10. Editor I don't know how you make a map in map editor although I DO know how the manipulation of objects, layers, ect. work. If someone could email me with info on how you actually MAKE the MAPS I would be very appreciative. ************************************************************************ 11. Closing Statements None really, until I actually complete this faq. ************************************************************************ 12. Acknoledgements My Mother and God cause they are so cool CjayC for making such a great site that has sucked over eight years out of my life. Tl2000 for emailing me tips on the rocket launcher, mines, and grenades. Anyone else who wants to help me by contributing stuff. ************************************************************************ END OF FAQ
