It is probably also outdated. A special thanks goes to Garth Ennis for making me a Punisher fanatic, and thus making me incapable of playing anything else while I waited for the game to arrive. Without his amazing writing and reinvention of Frank Castle, this FAQ would never have been written. Oh, and Armagan for making such an amazing game in Mount&Blade. Mount&Blade is an open-ended game in the same vein as Darklands or Elite. The player takes the role of the leader of a wandering band of soldiers and warriors. The player then sets his or her own goals, whether they be of a mercantile, heroic, or tyrannical nature. To accomplish these goals, the player will engage in dynamic and deep combat using everything from throwing daggers to military picks to bastard swords. 1.B - Where can I buy Mount&Blade? http://www.taleworlds.com/ No, you can't buy it in stores (yet). Maybe, when the game reaches version 1.0 a retail version will be released, but for now that website is the only legal source. 1.C - Where can I download mods for Mount&Blade? http://forums.taleworlds.net/ There are a few other sites, but that is the best one to go to. 1.D - What are some good mods? It really depends on what you are looking for. Ignoring my own personal modding project, I would suggest Band of Warriors and Firearms, if they are patched to the latest version of the game. If either of those seem a bit extreme, try The Eagle and the Radiant Cross, which has difficult battles and firearms, but is still enjoyable in a vanilla-esque sense. 1.E - What is the most recent version of the game? As of the time of this writing, the most recent official release is version version 0.960. This FAQ was originally written with version 0.903 in mind, but is being updated for version 0.96x. 1.F - Does Mount&Blade have a publisher? Yes. As of January of 2008, Paradox Interactive officially signed Mount&Blade. What this means is still unknown, but it is likely that Paradox Interactive will distribute the retail version, and possibly help finance the inevitable sequel. 1.G - Will Mount&Blade have multiplayer? No. No it will not. Mount&Blade 2, maybe. But not the one that this FAQ is about. 1.H - When is Mount&Blade going to be done? Version 0.960 is the last beta prior to version 1.0. What will happen after 1.0 is anyone's guess. The release date for 1.0 is still unofficial, but most of us on the Taleworlds forums suspect September, based upon Armagan's previous release schedules for the beta versions. ***2. Basic Combat*** 2.A - How do I attack? Simply put, click the left mouse button. Of course, if you want any strength behind that shot, you want to hold the left mouse button to "charge" the attack (basically, let the character finish pulling back the bowstring or wait until your character stops pulling back his arm to decapitate something), then release. To determine what kind of blow, use the mouse itself. Ignoring inverting of mouse directions and the like, move the mouse to the left or right before clicking to swing the weapon, look up or down to either do an overhand strike or to thrust. Some weapons only allow for certain attacks (polearms come to mind), but it isn't too hard to figure out. 2.B - How do I defend myself? Right-click. If the player has a shield, then that is all that is required. However, if the player chooses to not carry a shield (or does not have it equipped), the player must then parry the enemy's strike with the currently equipped weapon. Depending upon the difficulty settings, this can be as simple as only clicking when the enemy has begun to "charge", or actively using the mouse to block attacks from different angles in a similar manner to attacking. Also, any projectile that impacts the shield on a player's back will be considered to be blocked, and will thus do much less (if any) damage. 2.C - What is better, a crossbow or a bow? Both have their advantages. Bows allow for faster rates of fire and can all be used both on horseback and on foot. However, bows require an investment into the power draw skill as well as the weapon skill itself. Crossbows, on the other hand, only require an investment into the weapon skill. However, they are limited in that only light crossbows can be reloaded on horseback, and their overall lower rate of fire. However, it is important to note that there is no strain involved in aiming the crossbow (unlike the bow which simulates strain by lowing precision), and that they are overall much more powerful. In general, it is agreed that crossbows are good for infantry and as support weapons, whereas bows are great for cavalry and as primary weapons. 2.D - What about a good old fashioned throwing axe? Ah, throwing weapons. Plagued by a lack of ammo, a skill, and a good bit of prejudice. Throwing weapons, generally have low ammo, short range, and are still relatively imprecise, even at high skill levels. However, anyone who has used one will attest to the fact that they are devastating when they connect. This Vaegir personally prefers throwing axes, but generally keeps them in his trunk when he goes to a siege. 2.E - What is better, sword and board or two-handed? This really depends upon the player. Overall, two-handed weapons do a lot more damage, but obviously lower the player's defensive capabilities. However, once combat begins in earnest, cavalry will generally not notice a lack of defense, and a one-handed weapon wielder will notice heavily armored foes shrugging off attacks. In short, a shield is very useful when closing on an enemy during the skirmish stage of a battle due to the plethora of projectiles. However, the shield is much less useful when the player is mounted and cutting a swathe through the enemy's defenses. Of course, infantry would probably argue for a shield, for obvious reasons. 2.F - Why would I ever want to use a polearm? Aside from the fact that spears are cool (look it up), they are the super weapon of the game for one reason: Couched Damage. Basically, at high speeds, a mounted spearman will couch his polearm automatically. If the tip of this weapon impacts an enemy, it can easily do 90+ damage, which will generally kill any foe with a single blow. However, the polearm is particularly ineffective at close ranges due to the inability to build up any momentum. ***3. Basic Gameplay*** 3.A - How can I make money? There are a few ways. First is to buy and sell goods. An example of this would be buying wool in Rivacheg because you know that Zendar has a shortage. The second way, is to obtain and sell goods. An example of this would be attacking a caravan, then selling the goods to a town. A way recently added into the game is also to raid towns, which will give you a good chunk of dinars, and a lot of goods to sell. But, my personally favorite way to make money is by shoving pikes into the heads of various Swadians and bandits. During combat, if you do bludgeoning damage, the enemy may be knocked unconscious rather than killed. You can then sell these former foes into slavery, which can be lucrative. But even more lucrative is the equipment they were using. One good assault against an enemy party can easily net you a few thousand dinar, as well as some excellent gear to upgrade to. Last, but not least, is the arena. The player can place a bet on a team in the arena, or the player can compete and bet on himself. While this is not going to let the player afford plate armor anytime soon, it will help to pay the troops, or to raise new troops after a particularly vicious defeat. 3.B - Where can I get more troops? There are four real sources of troops. First, there is a good chance that you can recruit some decent troops at any given tavern. They are expensive, but they provide an immediate source of cavalry. Also, there is a chance that a Hero will be at the tavern, allowing the player to recruit a customizable unit. Second, you can recruit the basic grunt of any faction from a village allied with said faction. The third method of recruitment is rescue. If an enemy party has prisoners, defeating said party allows the player to recruit any of these prisoners into the players party, allowing for the recruitment of usually unobtainable units (Manhunters and Bandits are good examples). Last, the player can recruit from his own party's prisoner pool by talking to them after setting up camp. However, there is a chance that said prisoners will flee from the party. Also, the morale of the party is decreased by recruiting prisoners. 3.C - How can I get stronger? At the start of the game, the player's best options are to fight in the arena and against river pirates. At later levels, the best way to get stronger is to attack Sea Raiders, enemy raiding parties, and caravans. 3.D - Enemy armies are too big. There are two ways to handle a stronger enemy: Tactics, or numbers. In general, a roughly 1:1 ratio should provide a good challenge. But, once you learn the game, you can stand a good chance against 2:1 or even 3:1 odds. As for tactics, those I shall leave to other sections and the player to figure out. But in general, spears beat horses, skirmishers (ranged attackers) beat infantry, and cavalry tend to do well against skirmishers. 3.E - Where can I buy food? Either visit the goods trader in the market, or stop over in any village. 3.F - What is renown? It is basically a measure of how well known you are. Defeat challenging opponents to raise this value. 3.G - What is honor? Honor is basically a measure of how "knightly" you are. As of version 0.93, this doesn't actually mean anything. But it will probably be important in later versions. To raise it, just don't take rewards for assassination quests. 3.H - Where can I get better equipment? The contents of a store are pretty random, so just shop around at the various towns. A good source of equipment is actually large bands of powerful enemies. Taking down a band of Sea Raiders can usually get the player some rather good mid-game equipment, and attacking enemy lords provides competent late-game gear. 3.I - Where is... Click the "Quests" button. Then click the appropriate tab on the bottom of the screen. There, you have accessed the Wiki. Update this data by wandering around, buying information from travelers, and talking to various lords. 3.J - Do I really need to max out all my skills? Nope. Check the description of a skill to see if it is a party skill. If it is, just have one of your Heroes learn the skill as they level up. 3.K - What is Faction Reputation? It is how much a faction likes you. Join a battle that is already in progress. The faction you sided with will like you more. ***4. Basic Character Development*** 4.A - What do the Attributes do? All skills are based upon the attributes. Skills cannot be raised above certain levels without a certain level in the controlling attribute. A.1 - Strength Strength affects your base rate of damage, and your HP (one point of HP for every two points of strength). Also, most of the better melee weapons and armors have a minimum strength requirement. A.2 - Agility Agility affects your base speed. Increasing this also grants bonus proficiency points. A.3 - Intelligence Intelligence is the governing attribute for most of the party skills. Increasing this grants a bonus skill point. A.4 - Charisma Charisma affects your party's size. Increasing this increases the maximum size of your party. 4.B - What do the Skills Do? Skills influence your prowess in combat, as well as make the game easier. S.1 - Ironflesh Ironflesh increases the amount of HP you have. S.2 - Power Strike This adds a bonus to damage when using melee weapons. However, it does not affect couched damage. S.3 - Power Throw This adds a bonus to damage when using thrown weapons. Also, better throwing weapons require ranks in Power Throw. S.4 - Power Draw This adds a bonus to damage and accuracy when using bows. Also, better bows require ranks in power throw. S.5 - Weapon Mastery This skill allows you to increase your proficiencies beyond 60 when leveling up, and increases the rate at which said proficiencies grow. However, it should be noted that said proficiencies can increase beyond 60 without ranks in Weapon Mastery, they just cannot be raised with the proficiency points gained when leveling up. S.6 - Shield This skill increases the durability of shields. S.7 - Athletics This skill allows you to move faster when on foot. S.8 - Riding This skill allows you to move faster when mounted. Also, horses generally require ranks of this skill to ride. S.9 - Horse Archery This negates the penalty of using ranged weapons when riding a moving horse. With six points of this skill, the penalty to accuracy is negated. It is also important to note that a stationary horse incurs no penalties. S.10 - Trainer This skill grants experience to all party members of a lower level than the character. It is also important to note that this stacks. For example, if you and three of your Heroes have this skill, a newly recruited character would gain XP from all four characters. S.11 - Tracking This shows the tracks of parties on the map. The higher the skill, the more information is shown. S.12 - Tactics This skill adds to your advantage prior to a battle. S.13 - Pathfinding This increases the party's movement speed on the world map. S.14 - Spotting This increases the range at which other parties are visible on the world map. S.15 - Inventory Management This increases the number of items a character can carry. S.16 - Wound Treatment This speeds up the healing rate of the party. S.17 - Surgery This skill is used to determine if a character that is killed in combat is instead knocked out. S.18 - First Aid This skill is used to determine how much Heroes are healed in between rounds of combat. S.19 - Engineer This skill affects the cost and speed of building structures. S.20 - Persuasion This skill is used to convince lords to pay their debts. And even then it barely works, and there are easier alternatives. It might be useful in a mod or later version, but right now it is just a waste of skill points. S.21 - Prisoner Management This skill increases the number of prisoners that may be taken. S.22 - Leadership This skill increases the maximum size of the party. S.23 - Trade This skill increases the amount of money gained for selling goods. S.24 - Looting This skill increases the amount of loot you get after a battle as well as the time it takes to steal cattle or raid a village. 4.C - What are the different Proficiencies? In general, weapon proficiencies affect the base damage of weapons of that type, as well as the base weapon speed. P.1 - One Handed Weapons This affects any melee weapon that is held with only one hand. These tend to be swords, picks, clubs, and hatchets. P.2 - Two Handed Weapons This affects any melee weapon (other than polearms) that is held with both hands. These tend to be swords, axes, and hammers. P.3 - Polearms This affects any polearm. Look it up in a dictionary. These tend to be spears, pikes, staves, and halberds. P.4 - Archery This affects any bow. Also, the proficiency affects accuracy and holding time. P.5 - Crossbows This affects any crossbow. Also, this proficiency affects accuracy. It is important to note that crossbows are not affected by holding time. P.6 - Throwing This affects any weapon that is thrown at targets. These tend to be axes, stones, and javelins. Also, the proficiency affects accuracy and holding time. ***5. Basic Factions*** 5.A - What is a faction? Look it up in the dictionary. Basically, it is just something used by the game to determine who attacks who. 5.B - Who are the Vaegirs? Formerly the slaves of the Swadians, they are one of the original factions of the game. Their units tend to be heavily armored cavalry, and their skirmishers use bows. 5.C - Who are the Nords? Formerly vikings, these warriors are a force to be reckoned with. They are made up of very strong infantry with an emphasis on skirmishers. 5.D - Who are the Swadians? Once they ruled Calradia, but now they are getting what they deserve. They are the other original faction, and they also tend to use heavily armed cavalry. However, their skirmishers tend to use crossbows. 5.E - Who are the Rhodoks? As of right now, their back-story is pretty much non-existent. But they are also infantry oriented, but they use spears, making them cavalry killers. 5.F - Who are the Khergits? The Khergits used to be another type of bandit. However, now they are horsemen from the southern steppes. They prefer lightly armed cavalry, but even their skirmishers tend to be mounted. 5.G - Can I be a bandit? Yes and no. Yes, you can raid villages and caravans, but no, you cannot join a bandit faction without a mod. 5.H - How do I join a faction? Each faction has a leader. To join a faction, the following must be true: Renown + (Faction Reputation * Renown with Leader of Faction) >= 160 For example, you could theoretically have zero renown, but have an 80 reputation for the faction, and a 2 renown with the leader, thus allowing you to join. 5.I - What are the benefits of joining a faction? Aside from having support against your enemies, joining a faction gives the player a fief. ***6. Advanced Combat*** 6.A - How do I issue orders? Either use the shortcut commands (the number keys and the function keys), or hit backspace and use the menu/map that pops up. It is pretty self-explanatory. 6.B - Why are the Rhodoks so hard to beat? Let me guess? You are a cavalry-based army. Just like in history, cavalry are notoriously vulnerable to spears. Rhodoks almost all carry spears. But what beats a wall of infantry? That's right, skirmishers. Order your troops to hold position, then wait for them (thinning their ranks with your skirmishers). Then, when they get closer, send your infantry to charge. Once the infantry has engaged them, send the cavalry in. Congratulations, they are dead. 6.C - Enemy cavalry (horsey-guys) are too powerful. Okay, what is a cavalry unit's biggest advantage? Mobility and their charge. How do you negate that? That's right. Have everyone dismount, then wait for their charge. You will lose a few men, but then they will be unable to maneuver in your mass of infantry. At this point, laugh as knights are being killed by farmers with pitchforks. Another tip is to recreate the Battle of Agincourt and have your skirmishers darken the skies. 6.D - How can I survive against lines of crossbowmen? Damn Swadians. That being said, you have two real options. The intelligent one, which is to use your own skirmishers to keep them occupied, and the fun version, which is to lead your cavalry in a heroic charge. Either way, the key is to be decisive. Pick a course of action, then follow through. If you see a crossbowman fire, decide immediately whether or not you charge or flee. If you wait too long, they fire again. 6.E - How can I beat the peasant army? Sounds like somebody just pissed off a village to the point that fifty farmers are attacking. They are treating you like cavalry, you need to treat them like Rhodoks. Let them get engaged, THEN charge into their flanks. If you let them isolate you, you will fall. 6.F - How can I take prisoners? Land the "killing" blow with a blunt weapon and the opponent will just be knocked unconscious. After the battle, the winner can then take any fallen foes prisoner. *** 7. Advanced Economics *** 7.A - How do I make money fast? Aside from fighting enemies of considerable strength and wealth, the best bet is to take to heart the concept of "buy low, sell high". How low can you go? Free. Find a caravan, figure out where they are going, then attack them. Now, go to where they were going, and sell their goods (since, the city obviously needed it). Problem solved. 7.B - What are some good trade routes? I honestly have no idea. And, considering the dynamic nature of the game, I doubt any exist. Your best bet would be to check prices in various towns, and also to do the trick in 7.A. 7.C - What are some good villages to raid? Again, this varies depending upon what factions are at war, and who you are. But a good tactic is to go deep into enemy territory. The villages on the borders are obviously going to be poor. But the villages in the Rhodok corner of the map tend to be rather prosperous. 7.D - My army is too expensive! You have a few options. First, you can garrison them around payday to cut down on costs. Also, resting in your fief's manor will also lower the costs. But your best bet is to frequently raid and attack. Not only do you keep your numbers down, but you also have a constant flow of income. And always go big around payday. If you lose half your army, so be it. You just obtained five suits of reinforced platemail. 7.E - Where can I sell prisoners? If you are running a pre-0.95x version, just sell them at Zendar. If you are running a post 0.950 version, you need to check the various taverns to find someone willing to buy your prisoners. *** 8. Basic Real Estate *** 8.A - What can I do with my fief? Aside from nurture its economy and protect its population, not much. You can build upgrades using your party's highest engineering skill, recruit troops from it, and collect taxes. 8.B - How can I fix my fief's economy? Build a fishing pond, do any quests the village elder asks you to do, and simply protect it. If a party heads to the local town, protect them. And try to avoid abandoning your fief. They can easily be attacked by bandits. 8.C - How can I protect my fief? Build the watchtower upgrade, and just stay near it. Bandits won't attack it while you are there, and enemy parties are more likely to follow you than attack your village. 8.D - How do I get more recruits? Build a school, and be nice to them. Apparently intelligent and happy peasants like to act as your meat shields. *** 9. Advanced Real Estate *** 9.A - How do I get a castle? Siege the castle, then kill everyone inside. If your faction renown is high enough, it will be yours. But in all honesty, the very act of capturing it will probably give you the castle and a village attached to it. 9.B - What are the benefits of a castle? You can garrison troops, and it is really cool. 9.C - Can I take over a city? Yup, same procedure as a castle. 9.D - What are the benefits of a city? Much better taxes, and you can garrison troops. 10. Advanced Party Mechanics 10.A - Who are the heroes? Let me just preface this by saying that much of this information was collected from kaeldragor's thread on the offiical forums. http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,35706.0.html I also have no intention of going into excessive detail. I instead plan to just help by indicating what roles they best serve. I will leave it to the reader to figure out a compatible party. What I will do is indicate what weapons a character prefers, if applicable, as I figure it out. That was a long preface. And I don't know if that actually counts as a preface. Carry on. H.1 - Alayen A rather poor Tactician. H.2 - Artimenner The only hero who has the Engineering skill. He is also a Trader and Tactician. H.3 - Baheshtur A grunt. H.4 - Borcha The only hero that will shoot you in the head on a regular basis. As your standard scout, Borcha has tagged Tracking, Pathfinding, Spotting, and Player-Seeking Missile Production. H.5 - Bunduk While master of nothing, Bunduk has tagged Training, First-Aid, and Tactics. H.6 - Deshavi Another scout (Pathfinding, Spotting, Tracking). H.7 - Firentis Has Training tagged, but that isn't worth much. H.8 - Jeremus A great medic with Wound Treatment, First-Aid, and Surgery tagged. He also has Trading. H.9 - Katrin A Trader with very little First-Aid ability. H.10 - Klethi Technically a scout, but there are better choices. H.11 - Lezalit The best Trainer in the game. H.12 - Marnid Ties for the best Trader in the game, and also has some First-Aid and Wound Treatment ability. H.13 - Matheld Yet another poor Tactician. H.14 - Nizar Another lovable grunt. H.15 - Rolf One of the best Tacticians, Rolf also has First-Aid and Surgery tagged. H.16 - Ymira Ah, the cold heartless beauty. She loves to leave men to die, but is also rather competent at healing those who don't pick the short straw. *** 11. Odds and Ends *** 11.A - I have a question you didn't answer! That is nice. Check the Taleworld forums, but in all honesty, nobody is going to do that. So just ask on the GameFAQs boards. 11.B - Is it true there are guns in this game? Yes and no. There is support in game for firearms that can be activated with one line of text. But it is still unknown if Armagan has plans to make it a part of vanilla. However, most signs point to firearms support remaining solely for legacy purposes. 11.C - What is this I keep hearing about Dark Knights and zombies? Mount&Blade has evolved over the years. At one time, it was going to be a fantasy game and had undead. Also, up until the introduction of the five-faction system, there were enemy parties known as Dark Knights. They were basically very heavily armed bandits that generally had a lot of prisoners for obvious reasons. 11.D - How can I get in touch with you? Ask on the GameFAQs boards, or use some common sense. I happen to really like the name Gundato, as well as XFire and Google. 11.E - I want to be a ninja! Somehow, I think you mean samurai. And rather than question why every game, even pseudo-historical ones about western warfare, must have a Japanese weapons mod, I will just say this. There is already a suit of samurai-esque armor, and a katana, in the game. I won't say where. 11.F - What is this Zendar you keep referring to? Zendar used to be the starting town in Mount&Blade. However, as of version 0.950, this town no longer exists. *** 12. Stuff *** 12.A - Generic meaningless, yet entertaining, "legal stuff" If you want to host this FAQ on your site, the answer is no, unless you explicitly get my permission in an email. And yes, I realize that I didn't list my email anywhere in this FAQ. Also, if the words "cheat" or "code" are in your URL or site name, you get an auto-no. Most of this information was compiled either from personal experience, or just a basic search of the TaleWorlds forums. However, nothing was copied. There was a lot of paraphrasing though... For what it is worth, this FAQ is copyrighted by me, Robert "Gundato" Pavel, as of Sunday, December 16th, 2007. 12.B - Changelog v1.0 Initial released version of FAQ. Well, actually the second, but it took longer than anticipated for The Punisher to arrive in the mail. v1.01 Began to update the FAQ to version 0.95x. Also added information regarding Paradox Interactive, made contacting me easier, and added information on an easter egg. v1.04 Added information regarding who is allowed to host the FAQ. Added a lot of other stuff too. Was going to be 1.015, now it is 1.04. v1.045 Fixed a few spacing errors. Made a few small tweaks based upon questions asked on the forums.
