DREAM MATCH TENNIS PRO ======================= ================= TABLE OF CONTENTS ================= 1. INTRO 2. SHOTS 3. GAME MODES 4. PLAYERS 5. PLAYER RATINGS 6. POSITIVES 7. NEGATIVES ======== 1. INTRO ======== Dream Match Tennis Pro is a tennis simulation game for the PC created by Bimboosoft, a company based out of Saitama, Japan. Bimboosoft is a relatively small company, so despite Dream Match Tennis Pro being released in 2006 it is graphically inferior to other games released during the same time period. Although, developers designed this game with the intent of it playing similarly to real life tennis rather than the arcade (not so realistic style), which is present in most other tennis games. ======== 2. SHOTS ======== -Normal Shot (is a shot hit with top spin, forward spin and bounces higher, and when serving produces a normal speed serve, normally a second serve) -Hard Shot (is a flat groundstroke, relatively no spin and moves quickly through the court and a hard, flat serve, usually used as a first serve) -Slice (is the slice shot, stays low and has backspin on the ball as a serve a can be used as a first serve when looking for angle or a second for a little safety) -Lob (high angle shot to place ball over opponent, usually if opponent is at the net) -Drop (low short bounce right in front of the net) -Super Hard Shot (like the hard shot but harder but has greater chance of out or into the net) NOTE: These are just explanations of each shot that are apparent in Dream Match Tennis Pro. I don’t know the controls for each shot as I used a PlayStation 2 controller with an adaptor that plugged into my lap top. ============= 3. PLAYERS ========== -S. Evans- Based on Stefan Edberg he is rated as the game’s best net player as he has excellent volleys. He also possesses a great kick serve (with top spin) which allows him to get to the net and helps due to the fact his serve isn’t one of the most powerful. From the baseline he’s not one of the strongest in the game but can hold his own due to his excellent one handed backhand. -A. Arnold- Based on Andre Agassi, and is one of the best baseliners in the game. He has the best two handed backhand in the game, and a great forehand which enable him to hit winners with either wing. The downside is that his serve is marginal and his volleys rival his serve. -P. Scott- Based on Pete Sampras, he is an all around player who’s game is based around his powerful serve (which can reach up to 135mph) along with very good volleys. He also has an excellent forehand and a solid backhand which allows to trade from the backcourt with the best baseliners, while being one of the game’s best serve and volleyers. -J. Mason- Based on John McEnroe, he is not that great with to play from the baseline based on his rather weak groundstrokes. Despite that he is an exceptional net player (only behind S. Evans) with great touch on his volleys and is very quick moving around the court. He has an effective serve that can produce aces, despite it being a weak stroke due to the amount of spin he is able to produce. -M. Cooper- Based on Michael Chang he is blessed with amazing speed, which he needs for his defensive baseline style of play, thus making hin difficult to hit winners by. While his groundstrokes will not over power you, he does possess the ability to pull off some great passing shots. He has an average serve but is very consistent from the baseline and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. -I. Leach- Based on Ivan Lendl, he has one of the best and most powerful forehands in the game and his backhand is also above average, making him a very good baseliner. Although he has a powerful serve, the accuracy of it is not very good (it’s difficult to time), plus he quite slow and not good at the net. -B. Baron- Based on Boris Becker, and while he is not very fast he has a powerful serve, which is fairly easy to time and is a very adept volleyer. But even with his penchant for serve and volleying he can hold his own from the baseline with decent groundstrokes. -R. Nelson- Based on Rafael Nadal, he is one of the fastest players in the game he has a very strong forehand which can produce great amounts of spin and create extreme angles, along with a very good backhand. Add to that he has a solid serve and a good volley and is one of the best players in the game. -R. Ford- Based on Roger Federer he is an all around player who has very strong groundstrokes which he can a lot of spin to if needed, making him very good on all surfaces. His serve is also very good (which can reach up to 128-130 mph), is a good volleyer and quick moving around the court. Considered to be the best character in the game. -B. Banks- Based on Bjorn Borg, is baseline player with a good forehand and solid backhand, but neither tremendously powerful. His serve is average, but again not that powerful. He moves fairly well with good speed and possesses good volleys. In short he doesn’t do anything badly, but he doesn’t do anything exceptionally well. No discernable weaknesses or strengths. -J. Cain- Based on Jimmy Connors, the strength of his game lies in his groundstrokes. The do not produce a lot of spin, thus they are fairly flat which enables him to hit winners very easily. But the lack spin makes him more conducive to errors when going for angled shots. His serve is very weak, and can volley well, but nothing special -A. Richmond- Based on And Roddick, he owns the most powerful serve in the game (capable of hitting over 150mph), and a strong forehand. That’s about it for him as he is very slow, has a weak backhand and his volleys are even worse. -S. Gibson- Based on Steffi Graf, she is the only woman in the game. All of her abilities are weak compared to the men. But if there were more women, or a version/tour for women her forehand would be the best, with her serve being among the best. Has a great slice backhand, moves exceptionally well and would be a capable volleyer. ================= 5. POSITIVES ============ There are many positives to the game. One is the developers tried to base it on real life tennis, the actual sport, where timing, movement and strategy are actually involved and apparent to playing well. While they could not get a licence for the actual players they tried to simulate them, and there is even a feature which allows you to edit the player’s names and put in their real ones if you so desire. A nice to touch is the ability to change clothing for each player, which makes it a little more lifelike, and surfaces actually have discernable differences which is not the case in other tennis games. ============ 7. NEGATIVES ============ For all the positives in Dream Match Tennis Pro there are many negatives. I’m not going to spend time on graphics, frame rate and visual quality etc., as I noted in the beginning this game was designed by a small company. The majority of the problems come in the form of how players are rated. It is clearly evident that former players (Borg, Connors, McEnroe) do rate as high a current players (Federer, Nadal). Also Nadal for instance rates too high where the serve and volley is concerned, and Borg gets the shaft in many areas which makes him virtually unusable when going up against a Federer or Nadal. While Sampras and Agassi are also made inferior to Roger and Rafa they can at least hold their own. For Borg, Connors, McEnroe and Lendl, they really don’t have a chance. It won’t come down to skill of the gamer controlling the player, strategy etc., Federe, Nadal, Sampras and Agassi will just be too strong. The problem is it renders 9 of the games characters mute, as many will pick one of the aforementioned 4 if they want a fighting chance.
