INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Rambo - First Blood Part II' for the PC, a text adventure game by Mindscape & Angelsoft released in 1985. The walkthrough for this game is complete. If you spot any errors or have suggestions please feel free to e-mail me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== Save is done by typing SAVE. Load is done by typing RESTORE. QUIT is for leaving the game. RESTART is self-explanatory. You only type in this game and all the input is in CAPITAL LETTERS after the -> prompt. Anything in between is description of the game. Please note that sometimes the description might be slightly different and there might be additional messages whether or not a guard came across your path at any point in the game. When you hear a gunship or chopper you need to HIDE. If you cannot hide in this area you must reload and go to an area beforehand where you can hide from the gunship and then continue your journey. Therefore it is a good idea to save in different slots during your game. You have plenty of them for such a short game. If you come across a random enemy (i.e. guard) who is ready to kill you, SHOOT the guy and continue on. This happens at random in the jungle and the camp but there is also one case where this is supposed to happen as you can see in the walkthrough. =============================================================================== 03.) DETAILED WALKTHROUGH G0400 =============================================================================== Stand by... Insertion minus 60 seconds. The jet slices through twisting canyons, hugging the earth's contours. You stand at the door, ready to jump. It all comes back. The day Trautman, your former commanding officer, released you from prison and put you under the authority of some government agent called Murdock. Flown to Thailand, you were briefed, told to memorize your orders, fitted with weapons, and flown under the cover of darkness back to the Badlands. Five, four, three, two, one... Jumper away. You drop through the dark sky, diving towards hell. YOUR NAME: JOHN RAMBO CODE NAME: LONE WOLF SERIAL NUMBER: US52760162 YOUR BASE: WOLF DEN YOUR MISSION: To confirm the presence of Americans still held in a Vietnamese POW camp--without revealing your presence to the enemy. GROUND CONTACT: CO BOA MEETING SITE: BUDDHIST TEMPLE RENDEZVOUS WITH PICKUP: 18 HOURS FROM DROP The parachute explodes open. The jungle approaches in a rush. You crash through the uppermost branches of a tree and bounce off. Some of your equipment breaks away. You hit the earth and roll. The parachute billows, then collapses by your side. The drop site is a small clearing in the middle of a dense, rotten-smelling rain forest. The Buddhist temple is about three miles--almost five klicks--to the north. All around you, tentacle-like roots curve and twist up the trunks of immense Merbau trees. A half-rotted log is at your feet. Crushed ferns and parted grasses make a path into the dark forest to the west. To the north a narrow passage snakes through towering, slate grey boulders. The tree roots provide an excellent place to take cover and survey the terrain. In the light of the half-moon, everything looks quiet. -> REMOVE PARACHUTE You remove the parachute. -> PUT PARACHUTE IN LOG Done. The parachute is in the log. -> GET GUN You take the machine gun. -> WAIT You wait awhile. You hear the muted whomp-whomp of an approaching chopper. -> HIDE You take protective cover. A huge Vietnamese gunship roars by overhead. They don't seem to have spotted you. -> W Sharp-edged leaves slice your flesh at every step along this winding path. The sounds of animal screeching, insect clicking, and mysterious rustlings explode into a frenzy... And then fall quiet. You pause at the edge of a clearing dominated by a huge palm tree. A burst of bullets explodes near your feet. -> FIRE GUN AT BUSHES Brraaap! A strangled cry rises from the bushes, followed by the crunching, sliding sounds of a falling body. -> N Sweat drips from your body as you cross the clearing and climb up the rise. This ridge is crowned with wild orchid bushes. The jungle to the west is slashed by a deep ravine, and to the east a rocky streambed leads through overhanging trees. To the north a trail leads between two towering trees about 50 feet apart. -> SURVEY You scan the area and see the familiar shape of a Claymore mine bulging like an overgrown wart from the trunk of a teak tree to the north. -> FIRE GUN AT MINE Brraaap! Your shot strikes home! The mine detonates and hundreds of small steel balls fly over the trail in a lethal fan, slicing everything in their path. -> N This faint jungle trail winds north and south through towering trees, their roots hidden in mist. Your boots make strange sucking sounds in the muddy earth as vines whip and cut your skin. -> N Before you, shrouded in mist, are the ruins of a Buddhist temple. Trees and vines twist along the tumbled forms of the stone structure. At the top of the worn stairs is a massive stone Buddha. Something moves silently in its shadow. A path to the west leads to the river, and a jungle trail leads south. Parrots shriek overhead as a bullet whistles by. A voice whispers harshly from the shadows: Ai day! -> SAY LONE WOLF At your words, a slight figure emerges from the shadows of the Buddha. Before you is a slender Oriental woman dressed in black cotton clothing. Her lush dark hair falls loosely to her waist. Hello, Lone Wolf. My name is Co Boa. I have arranged for our transport to the enemy camp. We have a long way to go. I have brought food for the journey, but we must go now. Kinh will not wait. She turns and heads west into the jungle. -> W Co moves quickly down a faint animal trail, and disappears around a bend. You follow her to the edge of a pirate camp which is on a partially dried mud flat. Figures move restlessly in the jungle bordering the camp. An old junk rocks in the river to the west. To the east a path leads into the jungle. South from the camp is a narrow riverbank. A man stands in the middle of the camp, looking you over. He is chewing on a plug of foul-smelling tobacco. This grotesque man is wearing cheap costume jewelry and a pair of ragged jeans. His black, greasy hair grows to his shoulders. As Co hands the man a large roll of money, she looks straight at him and says: This is more than enough to pay for our trip up the river and back, Kinh, so don't try any of your tricks. -> LOOK AT KINH CLOSELY This grotesque man is wearing cheap costume jewelry and a pair of ragged jeans. A dirty canteen hangs from his belt. He sneers at you, his wide mouth revealing stubs of rotten teeth. His black, greasy hair grows to his shoulders. -> GET CAMERA You take the camera. -> KINH TRADE CAMERA FOR CANTEEN Kinh: For a dirty Yankee pig you make a pretty good trade. He grabs the camera and shoves the canteen into your hands. -> WEAR CANTEEN The canteen hangs on a loop in your belt. -> WAIT You wait awhile. Kinh: It's time to go. He turns, and swaggers off to his junk. -> W As you climb into the boat, the smell of dead fish rises to meet you. This thirty-foot hulk, stained with oil and blood, has seen better days. Large straw mats litter the deck. Kinh stands at the stern, next to the sputtering motor. Co and Kinh are here. The shore recedes as the boat pulls out into the murky current of the river. -> HIDE You and Co hide on the deck of the junk. As the junk moves upstream, the moon illuminates the river. Near one bank, wild oxen bend to the water to drink. -> WAIT (until) The boat nears the shore as the moon dips toward the horizon. The junk comes to a stop and you and Co jump out and wade to shore. This narrow sandbar leads north to a ridge of boulders. Wild boars have tunneled a trail through the dense jungle to the west. Kinh laughs harshly as he turns the junk back downstream. Kinh: Your money was only good for one way, dirty Yankee dog. Co is here. -> W Wild boars have tunneled a trail through the matted vegetation of the jungle. A boar comes down the trail directly toward you. It pauses, and its tiny eyes look directly into yours. It then turns tail and runs. The sandbar is to the east, and a rotten-egg smell is to the west. You see the branch. Co is here. -> GET BRANCH You get the branch -> E You're back at the sandbar. Co is here. -> N Giant boulders, smoothed by rains, surround you. Before you is a vision of hell--the camp you escaped from fourteen years ago. Protected by steep black cliffs, the prison camp is smothered in dark jungle. All approaches to the camp have been stripped bare. A forest has been defoliated to the west, and a smooth dirt trail to the north leads down to a wet, muddy field. The sandbar is to the south and the swirling muddy river is to the east. Co is here. -> SURVEY On the trail to the north is the circular outline of a punji-filled pit--the favorite booby trap of the enemy. The light catches the trip wires as the moon casts a glow on the charred floor of the defoliated forest. Co is here. -> PUT BRANCH ACROSS PIT You put the branch across the punji pit. -> You step carefully along the branch. Beneath the dirt and grass, interlocking metal spikes lie horizontally across the top of the pit. At the bottom, charcoal-burned bamboo spikes point upwards; their razor-sharp tips drip with fresh dung. You step off the branch. You sink in warm, oozing mud. Through a barbed wire fence, you see the camp to the west. The wire is anchored to a massive tree which houses a guard tower. A dirt road is to the north, and a trail leads south to a ridge of boulders. To the east is a hillside tea plantation. Co is here. -> GET KNIFE You take the knife -> CUT WIRE WITH KNIFE You cut the barbed wire in several places. The wires snap like dry twigs as the knife's saw-teeth catch the coiled steel, enabling you to remove a section of the fence large enough to get through. -> WEAR KNIFE The knife slips comfortably into the sheath. -> CO GIVE ME FOOD Co: Here is the rice. -> EAT RICE Famished, you wolf down the salty rice in its oily brown fish sauce. -> CO STAY HERE Co: I will wait here for you. -> W You crawl through the barbed wire fence. A blinding light shines in your eyes, freezing you in your tracks. A disembodied, Russian-accented voice chuckles softly: Ah, Lone Wolf. We were expecting you. It's the last thing you hear as a vicious blow to the back of your head blocks out all else. You awaken to find yourself strapped to rusty bedsprings. Sharp metal coils dig into your bare back. You open your eyes a crack. You are in a small room. Through a small window in the western wall, the dawn light reveals a starved remnant of a man tied to a bamboo cross. A man looms over you, his hot breath on your face. His blond hair and wire-rim glasses catch the early morning light. On one arm is the sword-and-shield patch of the KGB. Before he can speak, you hear a familiar voice. Tay's voice. Sgt. Tay: Let me handle him, Lt. Podovsk. This one's dangerous. Ignoring Tay, Lt. Podovsk barks at you: Tell me what you are doing here. -> MY NAME IS LONE WOLF Lt. Podovsk: Perhaps you do not take me seriously. I think this may change your mind. Podovsk throws a switch. Waves of electricity surge through your body. As you strain against the sharp bedsprings, the man demands: Tell me what you are doing here. You remember Trautman's words, his voice, telling you never to cooperate with the enemy. Podovsk throws the switch again. -> MY NAME IS LONE WOLF Lt. Podovsk: You have been abandoned, Lone Wolf. He walks over to a bank of modern communications equipment and spins a few dials. A voice emerges from the void--Murdock's: I'm telling you now, Trautman, your man won't find any POWs. Even if he does, we'll make sure he won't come back. A searing pain shoots through you as Podovsk throws the switch once more. -> MY NAME IS LONE WOLF Lt. Podovsk: You're beginning to bore me, Lone Wolf. Maybe Sgt. Tay can help change your mind. Tay approaches you, a knife in his hands. He brings the serrated blade close to your scars--the wounds he inflicted so long ago--and slowly smiles. Lt. Podovsk: That's enough for now, Tay. Go see to the other American. He turns to you and says: You'd better tell me what you are doing here, before the Sergeant returns. -> MY NAME IS LONE WOLF Lt. Podovsk: I'm tired of your games. He grabs a fistful of your hair and forces you to turn your head so that you face the window. Then he calls out: Begin, Sergeant. Tay draws a knife and brings it to the shoulder of the man on the cross. Then he looks up at the window, grinning, as the knife starts to cut the prisoner's flesh. He has drawn first blood. Suddenly, something in you snaps. Like a wild animal summoning its last bit of strength, you tear yourself free as Co bursts through the doorway, her gun blazing. Co's gunfire destroys all of Podovsk's equipment. In a panic, Lt. Podovsk dives out the door. -> GET GUN You get the machine gun. -> GET BOW You get the bow. -> N Greyish light filters into the few open areas between the thick-trunked trees. A recent rock slide has demolished part of the camp to the west. You remember this camp's layout vividly. To the south are the officers' quarters, and to the north is the landing pad. The quadrangle is east of your position. Co is here. -> E Down-curved branches throw ugly shadows on the muddy ground of the quadrangle. Through the trees to the east is the iron gate. The compound is to the west. The enormous tree that houses the guard tower is to the south. To the north is a footpath. Co is here. -> S The thick, gnarled tree has a guard tower built into it. The wooden boards overhead creak faintly. A rope ladder swings in front of you. It leads up to a hole in the floor of the guard tower. A dark, deserted quadrangle is to the north, and the barbed wire fence is to the east. Co is here. -> FIRE GUN AT PODOVSK Brraaap! Bullets crack through the floor of the guard tower, splintering the flimsy wood. You hear a choked cry--and a thud. Blood seeps slowly through the holes in the floor. -> N You're back at the quadrangle. Co is here. -> W You're back at the compound. Co is here. -> W A recent rock slide has uprooted trees and rocks in this ravaged area of the camp. The sun beating down on the rocks nearly blinds you. In the corner of the camp to the south, a Y-shaped bamboo cross rises from the dirt. An oil dump is to the north, and the compound is to the east. Co is here. -> WEAR BOW You wear the bow across your back. -> WEAR GUN You sling the machine gun over your shoulder. -> S Here, the POW hangs pathetically on a rigid bamboo cross. Suddenly, from nowhere, Sgt. Tay leaps onto your back, and you see the flash of a knife speeding toward your throat. -> FLIP TAY You quickly flip Sgt. Tay over your shoulder. He lands with the agility of a cat, though, and rolls to his feet. He lunges at you with the knife. -> PUNCH TAY Your blow catches Sgt. Tay's arm, sending the knife flying over the fence. He spins quickly, though, delivering a sharp kick to your kidneys. -> HIT TAY You land a good blow to Sgt. Tay's solar plexus, sending him flying to the ground. For a moment he seems to have trouble catching his breath. -> GET KNIFE QUICKLY You take the knife. Sgt. Tay regains his footing, and comes at you again. -> KILL TAY WITH KNIFE You slit Tay's throat, recalling all the hideous things HE had done with a knife. Alert to movement behind you, you spin around to face a guard aiming his gun at your head. -> KILL GUARD WITH KNIFE Before the guard can react, you leap on him and bury the knife deep into his heart. -> CUT THONGS WITH KNIFE You slice through the leather thongs with your knife, then gently help Banks off the cross. -> WEAR KNIFE The knife slips comfortably into the sheath. -> TAKE CANTEEN You take the canteen. -> GIVE WATER TO BANKS Lt. Banks drinks the water. -> GET BOW You take the bow. -> WEAR CANTEEN The canteen hangs on a loop in your belt. -> BANKS WHERE ARE PRISONERS Banks: They should be at the rice paddies. -> BANKS FOLLOW ME Banks: I'm right with you. -> N You're back at the rock slide. Co and Lt. Banks are here. -> N Oil drums stand randomly throughout the small dump. The northern and western borders of the area are built right into the cliffs. A rock slide is visible to the south. To the east is a small stretch of cleared land. Co and Lt. Banks are here. -> E This is a circular, dirt-packed area, used as a helicopter landing pad. Black, jagged cliffs form a barrier to the north. To the east is the barrack doorway. The overgrown compound is to the south. An oil dump is to the west. Co and Lt. Banks are here. The helicopter is here. -> GET IN You step into the helicopter. You are inside the Huey helicopter. Mounted on the skids of the copter are two rocket launchers. Co and Lt. Banks are here. -> FLY UP You fly above the camp. As the Huey hovers over the dark, damned camp, you can see the square roof outline of Podovsk's quarters, and the cross where Banks was so cruelly hung. But beyond the camp to the east a road borders a planted hill of tea, and leads to the squares of flooded rice paddies. The river Ca's muddy waters roil and roll to the south. Thailand--and freedom--are to the west. -> E You fly above the paddies. The flooded rice paddies below reflect the sun like a crazed, cracked mirror. Below you, you see Americans. To the south lies the river Ca; to the west, the POW camp. -> SHOOT ROCKET AT HEDGEROW The hedgerow disappears in a bright orange ball of flame as your rocket finds its mark. -> FLY DOWN You descend slowly and land within the rice paddies. Acres of square-shaped paddies are glazed with light. Water trickles through the newly planted rice seedlings, making quiet gurgling sounds. To the west is a hill crowded with tea plants. Hedgerows border the paddies on all other sides. The band of prisoners is here. Six emaciated forms are before you. Dressed in rags, mud-caked hair left to grow down their backs, the American POWs stare at you with growing hope. -> CO STAY HERE Co: I will wait here for you. -> BANKS STAY HERE Banks: Ok, man. Glad to take a rest. He smiles weakly before his body is racked with a violent fit of coughing. -> GET OUT You step out and stand next to the helicopter. The band of prisoners is here. -> FOLLOW ME They stumble after you, the ones who can still walk helping the weaker ones along. -> GET IN You step into the helicopter. Co, Lt. Banks and the band of prisoners are here. -> FLY UP You fly above the paddies. The flooded rice paddies below reflect the sun like a crazed, cracked mirror. To the south lies the river Ca; to the west, the POW camp. -> W You fly above the camp. -> W You fly to Wolf Den. The chop-chop of the rotor blades beats the air around you as you look down on Wolf Den. Two tiny figures stand at the airstrip's edge. The figures get bigger as you move into set down position. Your commanding officer, Trautman, holds a gun to Murdock's head. You figure it out pretty fast. The odds were stacked against you from the beginning. There is some loyalty left, though. Trautman smiles proudly as the hulking slick descends. You touch down lightly and the thumping blades start slowing down. Men stream out of the hangar. You hear murmurs from the crowd: It's Rambo. He made it back. Rambo. As Banks staggers from the slick, the men freeze for a moment, their faces a study in shock and horror. Then they begin cheering wildly. One man walks up to Banks and solemnly salutes him. As you help the first of the prisoners from the helicopter the joyful roar of the men becomes even louder. You see tears streaming down their faces and hear their quiet voices thanking these brave survivors as they tenderly guide them toward the hangar. Co's face shines with joy as she turns to you. Co: You are a real American hero, John Rambo. This time, you won. =============================================================================== YY.)
