I consider myself an intermediate musician in the game Mabinogi, and I typically help people who are looking into composing and playing music. I've noticed a few people having trouble learning, and have decided to help on a larger scale by writing an FAQ. ============================================================ ============================================================ [020000] The Three Tiers of Music in Mabinogi As you play Mabinogi, you may be wondering to yourself, "Wow. I've heard that song before! How does that person play it?" The first thing you'll want to do is try it yourself. You'll buy an instrument and sit and wonder why you're not playing as well as the other people playing. You've put money that may be necessary into something that you have no clue upon what you're doing. Take a step back and read for a bit. When it comes to music on Mabinogi, there are 3 tiers of structure: The Composing skill The Playing Instrument skill The Music Theory skill (sometimes called Musical Knowledge) The Composing skill encompasses the ability to write music and Magical Music onto score scrolls. The Playing Instrument skill allows the playing of different musical instruments and the playing of music and Magical Music from score scrolls. Music Theory increases the ranking of score scrolls and may add Magical Music to scrolls when used with the Composing skill and increases the abilities of the Playing Instrument skill. To be a great musician, you will need at least one or two of these skills, and any equipment needed to utilize them. ============================================================ ============================================================ [020100] Composing ============================================================ [020101] What is Composing? Mabinogi gives players a creative ability in the form of music called the Composing skill. With the Composing skill, you can arrange the speed, volume, duration, and pitch of notes, allowing many songs to be written onto a score scroll. Composing, in connection with the Playing Instrument and Music Theory (Music Knowledge) skills, allow a vast array of music to be played, filling the game with the power and emotion that music brings. The Composing skill not only allows you to write music to be played, but also gives a nice boosts to your INT. The more AP you put into ranks for Composing, the more notes that can be written, the greater the increase to INT you will receive, and at higher levels the Composing skill, alongside the Music Theory skill, may allow magical effects and buffs (not to mention the graphics that will catch everyone's attention). ============================================================ [020102] What is a Score Scroll? A score scroll is the object in which you imprint music in the form of MML code. The amount of code allowed on a score scroll is limited by the rank of your Composing skill. After a score scroll has a song put into it, it can be used only 100 times. It cannot be repaired. When using the Composing skill, the first window will pop up, and you get to choose which blank score scroll to use. This can let you color co- ordinate your music. The second window will pop up with 4 blanks, a check box, and a button that lets you copy from your computer's clipboard. The first blank is for the song title. This little blank is obviously marked with a label indicating you to type in the song's title. Next is the check box that lets you 'close' your scroll. This is very helpful if you don't want people to read the code of your music, which if your scroll is closed, they can't copy your music and benefit from your hard work. Following the check box is the 'copy from clipboard' button. This is where it might get tricky. If the code you copied isn't in the proper MML@ format, your symphony can turn out sounding like a kindergarten music class. If you're copying music line for line, don't press this button. Use Ctrl+V to paste instead. The next three blanks (provided you can't read the obvious labeling) represent Melody, Harmony 1 and Harmony 2, in respect. This is where you need to be most cautious and pay extra attention to your code. This should be the last stop for code and the first foot off for musical entertainment. Note: Song rank and score rank are different. As Composing will increase the number of note that can be put onto a score scroll (the song rank), it does not increase the rank of the score scroll. To increase the score rank, you'll need to increase the rank of your Music Theory skill. ============================================================ [020103] What is MML? The code used to write music called MML (music markup language) and is fairly easy to learn and utilize. MML is used to express the tempo, volume, duration, and pitch of each note to be written into the score scroll. As your Compose skill increases in rank, as does the amount of MML that you are allowed to input onto a score scroll. You are, however, only allowed to use up to 3 tracks per score scroll. When writing MML code outside of the Mabinogi game or an outside an MML program, the MML format begins with MML@, followed by the code for the Melody, followed by a comma ( , ), followed by the code for Harmony (or chord) 1, followed by a comma, followed by the code for Harmony (or chord) 2, ending with a semicolon ( ; ). Confusing? Here's an easier way to look at it: MML@,,; Not so hard now that you're looking at it from this vantage point. ============================================================ [020104] The Notes and MML Code. First, let's talk about the notes. Notes are expressed in simple letters, aka the pitch, typically followed by 'n', the number representing the length in which that note will be held. Note pitches are represented by the letters: 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E', 'F', and 'G'; and sharps and flats (half pitch higher or lower) are represented with either '+', for sharp, or '-' for flat. Note: When writing MML code, no capitalization is needed. Example: G1 is a whole G note; G2 is a half G note; G4 is a quarter G note; G8 is an eighth G note; G16 is a sixteenth G note; and so on. Example: If you wanted to make quarter note F sharp, you would write it as F+4. There will be times when a group of notes will be held for the same duration. The MML code can be shortened to allow more notes using 'Ln', 'L' being the length command and 'n' being the length in which the following notes will be held. 'Ln' will only have an effect on notes that don't have a number following the letter. Example: If you wrote the notes for Mary Had a Little Lamb, the notes would appear like this: B4A4G4A4B4B4B2A4A4A2B4D4D2B4A4G4A4B4B4B4B4A4A4B4A4G1 This way, it uses 52 notes. It can be represented using less code utilizing 'Ln' as this: L4BAGABBB2AAA2BDD2BAGABBBBAABAG1 This way, you can have the same arrangement of Mary Had a Little Lamb at 32 notes instead of 52. The notes that are ending with 2 and 1 will play as half and whole notes, respectively, because they do not share the same number value as 'Ln'. The default for 'Ln' is 4. Also, the effects of 'Ln' will end in the presence of another 'Ln'. Example: G4G4G4G4G8G8G8G4G8G8G8G4G4G4G4 can be written as: L4GGGGL8GGGG4GGGL4GGGG The first L4 ends when the L8 begins and L8 ends where the second L4 begins. Now, there are times when you may want to use a period ( . ) and ampersand ( & ). What are these, you may ask? The period is used to represent a note being held 1.5 times longer. It will always follow the number in which it will lengthen. The ampersand connects two or more separate note lengths into one note length when there may not be a number that could represent it. The period can also be used with 'Ln' by placing it directly after 'n'. Example: Mary Had a Little Waltzing Lamb (using the period) B4.A8G4.A8B4.B8B2A4.A8A2B4.D8D2B4.A8G4.A8B4.B8B4.B8A4.A8B4.A8G1 OR (used with 'Ln') L4.BA8GA8BB8B2AA8A2BD8D2BA8GA8BB8BB8AA8BA8G1 Rest allows spaces in notes to which silence can be placed. Rest is much like pitch when being represented in length, but is represented by 'Rn' instead of a pitch letter, 'R' being the rest command and 'n' being the length of the rest. Also, 'Rn' is effected by 'Ln', and if 'Rn' is the same length as 'Ln', 'Rn' can be reduced to 'R'. Example: Mary Had a Little.... something. L4BAGABBR2AAR2BDR2BAGABBRBAABAG1 Or Example: Somebody Had a Little Lamb. L4RAGABBB2AAA2BDD2RAGABBBBAABAG1 'Rn' can also be used to make notes shorter, making them staccato. Simply shorten the notes you wish to make staccato fill in using 'Rn'. Example: A4 can be made staccato by replacing it with A16R8. A8 can be made staccato by replacing it with A32R16. A16 can be made staccato by replacing it with A64R32. Example: Mary Had a Very Pointy Little Lamb. L8BRARGRARBRBRBR4.ARARAR4.BRDRDR4.BRARGRARBRBRBRBRARARBRARG Knowing octaves are very important if you want more variety in notes than 12 pitches. Octave is represented by 'On', 'O' being the octave, and 'n' being 0 to 8, lowest to highest, respectively. Notes in an octave start at C and end in B. In MML, the default is at O4. To change octaves, you can either use 'On' to switch to octaves, or the symbols ( < )and ( > ) to lower or raise octave. Using << and >> will lower and raise octave twice in one direction, and using <<< and >>> will lower or raise octave 3 times in one direction, and so on. Also, C- can be used to represent B on a lower octave, as well as B+ can be used to represent C on a higher octave. Example: C scale, one octave. CDEFGAB>C -OR- CDEFGABB+ (using the sharp to raise to the higher octave C) Example: C scale, two octaves CDEFGAB>CDEFGAB>C Example: C scale, two octaves, then back down and repeat the first octave. CDEFGAB>CDEFGAB>C<C -OR- CDEFGAB>CDEFGAB>CO4CDEFGAB>C Sometimes changing octaves can take up a bit of space. This is where 'Nn' can be used. 'N' is code for pitch and 'n' is the number representing it's place on the scale. Each octave represented is by groups of 12 notes. If you were to start at O4C, the 'Nn' would be N48, and to raise or lower the pitch, simply add or subtract 1 from the 'n'. Example: What's that note?! Octave 0 C = N0 Octave 1 C = N12 Octave 2 C = N24 Octave 3 C = N36 Octave 3 B = N47 Octave 4 C = N48 Octave 4 C+ = N49 Octave 4 D = N50 ... and so on. Please note that any notes below N16 (O1E) and above N88 (O6E) will not be heard. Example: So many octave changes! L2A+>A+A+G+G+ L2A+N70A+N70G+N68G+>G+ Volume is probably the easiest of the MML code to memorize. Volume is the loudness of the notes played and is represented by 'Vn', 'V' for volume control and 'n' being loudness, 1 being the most silent and 15 being the most loudest. Volume can be changed any where and time simply by adding 'Vn'. Example: Volume scale. V13 to V15 - Very Loud. People are powering down their speakers. V10 to V12 - About average. Not too loud, but still very audible. V6 to V9 - Below average volume. V1 to V5 - Very soft. The effects of Vn also end in the presence of another Vn. Example: Mary Had a Shouting Little Lamb... V8L4BAGAV15BBB2V10AAA2V15BDD2V8BAGAV10BBBBV13AABAV15G1 Also, Volume can be used to express fading in or fading out. Example: Mary Had a Phasing Little Lamb... V3L4BAV5GAV8BBB2V10AAA2V13BDD2V10BAGAV8BBBV5BAABV3AG1 Volume code has effect only within the track it is placed. If volume is to affect all the notes in a certain section, it must be placed respectively in each different track. Tempo is fairly easy. Tempo regulates the speed in which notes are played. Tempo is represented by 'Tn'. Tempo is at 120 at default, but for a faster tempo, a higher number is required; as in T200. For a slower tempo, try using numbers around or lower than 100, such as T80. Example: Mary Had a Little Lamb... in the Fast Lane! T180L4BAGABBB2AAA2BDD2BAGABBBBAABAG1 OR Example: Mary Had a Really Slow Little Lamb. T60L4BAGABBB2AAA2BDD2BAGABBBBAABAG1 Tempo code is universal, and as such, effects the entire score when placed in one track, and will cancel any previous tempo code. ============================================================ [020105] Melody and Harmonies. As expressed in section [020103], when composing, you get the option of using from 1 to 3 tracks. The first is the Melody. This is the steak and potatoes of your code, having from 200 characters at Composing Rank F to 800 characters at Composing Rank 9 and more at later ranks. Harmonies (or chords) 1 and 2 are the second and third tracks. These are allowed a considerably less amount of characters. ============================================================ [020106] Getting Started on Composing The first step to composing is always buying that first instrument and wanting to play a custom song. Hold fast, though, because much more is needed to be a great composer, let alone a great musician. To obtain the Composing skill, you need to buy and read the book "Introduction to Music Composition". It costs 500 gold, and can easily be bought from Malcom, in Tir Chonaill; Aeira, in Dunbarton; and Nele, in Emain Macha. The book is a great asset when beginning Composing and may just be your best friend for some time. After a successful read, you will have to try the skill. Buy a blank score scroll and just jot down anything. You will fulfill the requirements needed to level Composing to F. When you're ready to level it to Rank F, you'll need to spend 3 AP in order to be able to raise it from practice level (Melody limited at 200 characters, Harmony 1 limited at 100 characters ) to Rank F (Melody limited at 400 characters, Harmony 1 limited at 200 characters, Harmony 2 limited at 100 characters, and +5 to INT). Rank F is a considerable gain from practice level, but it's only the first real step to mastering Composing. For leveling up ranks in Composing, you'll have to run back and forth across the world in order to get the requirements and you'll need a lot of money. ============================================================ [020207] Benefits of Composing. The ability to create both pre-made and custom scores is a given benefit, add Playing Instrument skill, and you're on your way to becoming the next great thing in aural entertainment. Another benefit is the INT bonus. Come on, +5 per rank? Nice. Also, the ability to make Magical Music starting at Rank 9 Composing, in co-ordination with Rank 9 Music Theory, holds great benefit. ============================================================ [020108] Training Method and Status Bonus Note: Not all ranks are available in North America. This FAQ will update as the game progresses and adds extra ranks. There are plenty of composer and music editor programs out there that can help you. Try to find a program that works for you and I'm sure composing will be a lot easier and less stressful. With a composer and music editor program, you will also be able to convert Midi files into playable songs. Be warned, you can only use 3 tracks in Mabinogi, and for most songs, you'll have to edit and trim down the song you want copied to even sound remotely recognizable. ============================================================ ============================================================ [020200] Playing Instrument ============================================================ [020201] What is Playing Instrument? The Playing Instrument skill encompasses all the skill required to properly play any instrument. Higher ranks will posses greater skill and will make fewer mistakes and will have a higher chance to perfect performances, as well as the inevitable ability to play Magical Music. ============================================================ [020202] Getting Started on Playing Instrument. The first thing you'll need is an instrument. The least expensive, and probably the most versatile, is the Lute. It only costs 1,000 and is sold at any General Store or from Nele in Emain Macha. Once you equip any instrument, you'll instantly have knowledge of the Playing Instrument skill. Once you've gotten the Playing Instrument skill, going from Practice Rank to Rank F is only one skill use away, and the 1 AP needed to level up. ============================================================ [020203] How Do I Play Music Score? Quoting someone I've helped, playing a song from a score scroll is easy. Simply have your instrument in your right hand and equip a score scroll in the left. From there on, just use your Play Instrument skill. That didn't hurt as much as you thought, huh? ============================================================ [020204] Benefits of Playing Instrument. There are several benefits of the Playing Instrument. Besides showing off the cool music you've just bought, each rank of Playing Instrument gives you an additional status point of DEX. Raising in rank is also fairly easy when it comes to Playing Instrument, as all you have to do is play an instrument and not go on any wild or far paced quests, and simply keep your instrument maintained. Also, at Rank 9 Playing Instrument, you'll be able to play Magical Music. ============================================================ [020205] Training Method and Status Bonus Note: Not all ranks are available in North America. This FAQ will update as the game progresses and adds extra ranks. Cheating is normally not looked well upon, but in this case, it's not truly cheating. You can level up quickly with the Playing Instrument skill by using the Composing skill or having someone else compose a short, fast line of music, such as the following code: MML@T255V1L64C,V1L64C,V1L64C; Normally, if you play without a score scroll, you'll play a default song. These songs normally play for about 10 to 15 seconds. Playing this will take only about 4 seconds, so playing the code on a score scroll will save you plenty of time while leveling. ============================================================ ============================================================ [020300] Music Theory (Musical Knowledge) ============================================================ [020301] What is Music Theory? Musical Theory (also called Music Knowledge) increases the rank and difficulty of composed music and (supposedly) improves the Playing Instrument skill. At Rank 9, Music Theory allows you to write Magical Music score scrolls. Note that raising most ranks in Music Theory require you to purchase a book. These books can be quite expensive. Keep in mind that raising your Music Theory skill higher than your Playing Instrument skill, or raising your Playing Instrument skill higher than your Music Theory skill, will make it harder to gain experience from the Playing Instrument skill. ============================================================ [020302] Getting Started on Music Theory. Getting started with Music Theory can be expensive, or fairly inexpensive. The first step is to start at the beginning, right? Go to Dunbarton and visit Aeira. Her store sells the book "Music Theory" for a whopping 80,000 gold. But that's chump change for you, right handsome? Huh? NO? Well, then... there is a way to get Aeira to GIVE you the book, but it still costs a little bit of gold. What you'll need to do get Aeira to like you. You can do a whole bunch of Part-Time Jobs, but giving gifts is the fastest way. First, be friendly to her and ask her about Private Story, Nearby Rumors, and Skills. Then, go to her father, Walter, the owner of the General Store in Dunbarton, and purchase about 6 Anthology gift items and 2 Cubic Puzzle gift items. Return to Aeira and left-click and drag the item over to Aeira. After each item you give her, talk to her about Private Story, Nearby Rumors, and Skills. If done correctly, she should give you the book "Music Theory" for free (or considering the cost of the gifts, about 1,000 to 2,000 gold). Upon reading the "Music Theory" book, you'll gain knowledge and Practice Rank in Music Theory. Spend 1 AP, and you will have Music Theory Rank F. ============================================================ [020303] Benefits of Music Theory. Music Theory increases the rank and difficulty of your score scrolls. This can mean very little before your Composing skill and Music Theory skill are both at Rank 9, as this is where Magical Music can be added to score scrolls. Also, Music Theory (supposedly) improves the Playing Instrument skill. The Music Theory skill only costs 1 AP for each rank up to Rank A and costs 2 AP from Rank 9 on, and with a +5 INT bonus per rank, Music Theory can be very much worth just the exta INT. ============================================================ [020304] Training Method and Status Bonus Note: Not all ranks are available in North America. This FAQ will update as the game progresses and adds extra ranks. As your Music Theory skill raises, the difficulty of your composed songs will increase. If you are investing in Playing Instrument and your score scrolls are too high (or too low) of a rank, the chances of gaining experience decrease as the gap in ranks increases. ============================================================ ============================================================ [030000] Magical Music Magical Music can be obtained by having higher ranks in both Composing and Music Theory. The Composing skill and the Music Theory skill must each be at least Rank 9 in order to write Magical Music onto a score scroll, and in order to play Magical Music, the Play Instrument must be at least Rank 9. The chance of a composed score scroll gaining Magical Music is random, as is the effects in which the Magical Music adds. Magical Music grants various and random buffs on the player performing, as well as any party members and surrounding enemies. The players logged on as pets will be affected by the buff, but pets running in AI will not receive any benefits of Magical Music. The buffs last for a short period after the Magical Music is played. Magical Music buffs do not stack, and if another Magical Music is played, it will cancel the previous buff. Magical Music is divided into three main groups: Status Boost Magic, Healing Magic, and Special Effect Magic. Note: I'm not entirely 100% on this section. Anyone who's willing to help, I will be sure to add you to the credits. ============================================================ [030100] Status Boost Music Status Boost Music is a type of Musical Magic that gives a temporary boost to either STR, DEX, INT, WILL, or LUCK. The status boost is of a random value each time the scroll is used, but the maximum boost available will increase based on the player's rank of Playing Instrument. ============================================================ [030200] Healing Music Healing Music is a type of Musical Magic that restores either Health Points (HP), Stamina Points (SP), or Mana Points (MP), at a fixed rate. The strength of the healing is random, but the maximum available healing is influenced by the rank of Playing Instrument skill. ============================================================ [030300] Special Effect Music Special Effect Music has either a great effect or great counter-effect. Your party will see a great benefit in Special Effect Music, whether it is for the best or used completely against them. ============================================================ [030301] Peaceful Music When playing Peaceful Music, nearby monsters will stop their attacks and go into a non-combat state. However, sometimes the music effect will fail, and when this happens, all nearby monsters will become aggressive and will attack. ============================================================ [030302] Berserker Berserker gives party member 100% of Heavy Stander, Mana Refractor, and Natural Shield. Heavy Stander prevents you from being knocked down from melee attacks and allows you to interrupt an attacking monster. Mana Refractor prevents you from being knocked down by magic attacks. Natural Shield prevents you from being knocked down by ranged attacks. As great as this may sound, there is a downside to the Berserker effect. Upon failure, all member will be stricken with the Weakness status instead. When afflicted by Weakness, monsters will act as if they have Heavy Stander, Mana Refractor, and Natural Shield. ============================================================ [030303] Fast Casting Fast Casting reduces the charge speed of spell casting by upto 70%. ============================================================ [030304] Sharp Aiming Sharp Aiming in creases the aim meter of ranged attacks up to 120%. If the character is walking, the aim meter will be at 90%, and if running, it will be at 80%. ============================================================ ============================================================ [030000] Secret Shops Aeira and Nele both have secret shops. You'll have to do a few chores In order to get Aeira's secret shop, you need to follow these instructions: First, you must obtain a Empty Chest. Empty chests can be found by hunting bears. Second, go to the Sen Mag Plateau. Sen Mag Plateau is South of Emain Macha and west of Gairech Hill. You will find Fleta at Sen Mag Plateau between the hours of 9:00-11:00 AM, 3:00-5:00 PM, and 7:00-9:00 PM. Talk to her during these times while the Empty Chest is in your inventory and she'll be upset that the chest is open and it's contents lost, and you'll receive the keyword "Fleta's Chore". The chest contained Imps. Apparently, there are special items that have a great allure to Imps, and it's your job now to collect them. You'll find all the items in Emain Macha. The first item is a flower and it is given to you for free by Del, whom is selling flower items by the fountain. The second is an herb and it is given to you by James outside the Cathedral. The last is a spice and it is given to you by Gordon inside the restaurant. After you collect these three items, return to Fleta. She'll reward you with Aeira's Special Coupon. Return to Aeira and she'll take the coupon and open her secret shop. Her secret shop has a special shop tab. Be warned: You can access her shop only once per coupon. You'll have to repeat this entire process once you close out her shop in order to access her secret shop again. In order to get Nele's Secret Shop, you need to first go to Dunbarton. Talk to Kristell and buy the candlestick gift item from her. Go to Emain Macha and give him a candlestick by clicking and dragging the candlestick and dropping it over Nele. Nele's favorite item is the candlestick, and it will take at least 20 in order to get him to open shop. Every time you give him a gift, talk to him about Personal and Nearby Rumor. When you go to his shop, he will tell you that he has opened his 'Secret Shop' to you, and all of his books will be available to you. Unlike Aeira, his secret shop is not under another shop tab and can be accessed many times. *It appears that sometimes you'll lose friendship over time, do a few Part-Time Jobs for Nele or give him a couple candlesticks and you should be able to get into his secret store again. Also, if you rebirth your character, you will have to repeat the entire process again in order to access his secret shop. ============================================================ ============================================================ [050000] Programs and Web Sites When composing, it is highly suggested that you use a MLL editor. You'll be able to see your work, and it will speed your composing a bit faster. Nexon provides a composer under the Community menu at: http://mabinogi.nexon.net/ I use the program 3MLE created by ALOE. http://aloe.or.tp/tools/3mle/ If you have any suggestions on programs or web sites, please feel free to contact me. I'll check into it and if it's trustworthy, I'll add it to this FAQ. ============================================================ ============================================================ [060000] Marketing Music So, you want to profit from music, huh? Or maybe someone has a nice piece of music that you want, and you think they are overcharging? My first suggestion for sellers is to be fair. No body likes a greedy salesperson, but putting a lot of effort into a score and selling it too cheap may not be the greatest idea ever. Also, songs that are popular tend to sell a lot more often than songs that no one's heard of or recognizes. For songs that you've put real effort into, such as personal songs, rare songs, songs only found on sheet music, and songs not found in Midi format, you may want to advertise the song by playing it and see the reaction of people before you try to sell it. The same goes for songs easily obtained and put into MML format. For general purpose, try selling songs at 1,000 gold each, or at 10 gold per uses left on the score scroll. If a song has magical effects, try selling at a considerable increase, as songs that produce magic are going to have a higher demand. Songs that are popular and have a magical effect may sell for a greater profit. Also, note the days that NPC store owners sell their products at a lower cost. Buying 20 score scrolls at 28 gold per scroll may not be a big difference, but penny pinching may get you closer to having a lot more gold than you think. My suggesting to music buyers, know your composers. Some composers may sell scrolls at a much higher cost than the song is valued at. Also, some composers may simply copy and paste their songs from websites. If you buy a song and it seems that the Melody and Harmonies don't quite match up, you may not want to invest in any more of that composer's inventory. ============================================================ ============================================================ [070000] Version History 10/15/08 Fixed Errors and converted format, v 1.20 10/15/08 Fixed Errors and Added New Data, v 1.01 10/13/08 Finished version 1.0 10/12/08 Began "Tigermoth's Guide for the Musicians of Mabinogi" ============================================================ ============================================================ [080000] Frequently Asked Questions.
