Next Version ------------------- Introduction--------------------------------------- Year 1848 Who knows? Maybe you are a farmer from Virginia? Or a teacher from New England? You could even be a freed slave from Alabama. No matter what place you come from, there is only one thing on your mind: the opportunity of an incredible chance to move west and start a new life. You have heard many stories of people who have already traveled on the Oregon Trail. Young and old, rich and poor, individuals and families, people from everywhere, embarking on a great journey. But why? The answer is the free, fertile farmland for anyone with enough guts to make the trip. Now, you want to make the journey for yourself! In 1849, gold was discovered in California, and 30,000 fortune hunters packed up their bags and headed to California. By the 1860s, more than 300,000 people have traveled the Oregon Trail. But they had to avoid raging rivers, buffalo stampedes, snakes and life-threatening diseases. What will you choose to do? ----------------Getting started---------------------------------------- After you have installed the game, you will see a sign in sheet. 1. Type in a name. 2. Choose an occupation. Your choice now will decide how much money you will have at the start and what skills you have along the trail. 3. (Optional) Enter a birthday. When that day comes, you partners will celebrate the big event. You may choose one of the following: Carpenter with $200 Banker with $210 Blacksmith with $190 Teacher with $150 Barber with $180 ------------------- Getting started in Independence----------------- Independence, Missouri was the most popular starting point for pioneers. In this game, you will have to choose 2 other people to go along with you. It is important to find people with useful skills and good personalities to accompany you. You have 2 options. Option 1(Preferred): Find your own partners. Visit the hotel. There, you can choose people to join you by talking to them. This may take a bit longer, but it may be the best choice for beginners. You'll also need to go to the livery stable to buy a wagon and oxen. Go to the general store and buy the supplies you need. (Don't worry, you won't run out of money... yet...) Explore the town and you can also find potential party members just chatting outside. Option 2 (Quicker way): Join a wagon. The program will automatically choose 2 people to go with you. This is the quickest way to get on the trail, but you may end up with people you don't like. To choose this option, just click on the wagon outside the hotel. As an added bonus, you will get a wagon, oxen, and a basic set of supplies. I'll give you a quick overview of the options. At the bottom of the screen, you will see all kinds of options. The wagon wheel on the far left will bring you back onto the trail. The telescope will show you what scenery surrounds you. The basket above it with the gun powder allows you to hunt, fish, or gather plants. The guidebook is an important feature, it tells you about the animals, the plants (whether they are poisonous or not), map, and other necessary information. The map is highlighted in a bold, black line, which will lead you to Oregon, Which makes the game even easier! You will refer to this feature a lot. The thermometer below that will show you the temperature, date, and the condition of you and your party members. Here, the random diseases you get will be listed. On the right, the pictures of your partners will allow you to talk to them and get their opinions. They will tell you if you've got a fever, its too cold or hot, and what to do if you need advice. You can adjust travel speed: steady, medium (recommended), or grueling. You can adjust rations: Bare-Bones, medium, or Filling (recommended). The last thing for options in the supply inventory. This will include a water meter and a food meter. Whenever the bar runs out, that means your party will dehydrate or starve. Click on them to see everything that is in the wagon. --------------- Buying a Wagon and oxen-------------------------------- In this game, your only choice is oxen, so sorry, that is your only option. Go to the stable. In case you can't find it, it has 2 big X's on the doors. When you arrive there, you can talk to the guy there, Matt Vine, and get his opinion. Whenever you are ready, click on the wagon to make your purchase. You can choose 6, 8, or 10 oxen. I chose 10, just because I felt like it. If you choose your partners first, you might have a little more money to spend. ------------------ Buying your supplies-------------------------------- You have 5 options, 4 of them are packages. Choose whichever you want. I just chose to buy everything I thought I needed myself. If you don't want to waste too much time choosing, enjoy one of the package deals and start your journey. Click on the items behind the cashier to buy stuff. The Settler Package: It has everything you will need on the trail, plus items that will come in handy if you make it to Oregon and decide to settler there. The basic package, recommended to everyone buying a package. The Overlander Package: It includes lots of food, clothing, and other luxuries to make your trek as comfortable as possible. My Thoughts: Don't buy it because why do you have to pay for food? You can hunt for free meat the first second you leave independence! You can fish for free fish and gather free plants! You are better off buying the Settler Package. The Hunter Package: This is for you folks who love killing cute, innocent animals, like deer. It has extra Rifles, Shotguns, and ammunitions to ensure lots of food on the trail. The Racer Package: As the name suggests, this package includes the bare minimum in supplies to lighten the load for your oxen and help you get to Oregon as soon as possible. Since I like to take my time, I don't recommend this. Get this if you want to get to Oregon in like, a month. After you have bought a Package deal, you can buy extra food, clothing, or whatever you think will be important. Also check out the medicine. Buy a couple of each (They are cheap) to make sure that you are prepared for any disease you might meet. You might also want to be a doctor, or choose a doctor as a partner, so at least someone knows how to use the medicine. NOTE: To buy water, it is named as water kegs and is found under Tools. ------------------ On the Trail---------------------------------------- Here, I will give you a detailed description of your options and things to do on the trail. The food and water barrel: The gauges show how much food and water you have. Click on it to get your supplies. If your wagon gets too heavy, you can choose to dump some of them. Thermometer: Check the date, the weather, and the health of you and your partners. Kettle with the fire: Rest. It is a good idea to stop and rest occasionally, especially if you are sick or injured. Guidebook: Your guidebook has maps of the trail. Check the map if you get lost. It also gives you a detailed analysis of each breed of animal or plants. You will be relying on this a lot. Chart: You can set your pace to: Steady: 8 hours per day Strenuous: 10 hours a day Grueling: 12 hours a day You can also set rations to bare-bones, average, or filling. Telescope: Stop for a moment and take in the scenery! Basket: When you are running low on food, you can stop to hunt, fish, or gather plants. I will describe them all right now. ---------------------Hunting------------------------------------------- The hunting in this game is even better than some games that are designed specifically for hunting! It's easy too! Not complicated like those other hunting games. To go hunting, you need a rifle or a shotgun. Rifles are better for larger animals, like deer or bears. Shotguns are better for small game like squirrels and... what seems to be like a prairie chicken?? Small game is useless because you only get a couple pounds of food. What a waste of a bullet. It is not worth it. Go for big 400 pound buffalo instead. You will encounter over a dozen animals. Some examples are skunks, squirrels, chickens, deer, buffalo, black bear, brown bear, moose, and a lot more. Consult the guidebook for more information, not that you need it. Just shoot whatever it big and moving. Hunting in this game is just like hunting in real life. If you do not know what I mean, her are some examples: - It is easier to hit an animal at close range than from a distance. - Large animals have a "shoot me" sign taped to their backs and smaller animals are harder to hit. - Why waste bullets on a 2-pound rabbit when you can go for 300-pound black bears? - Shooting carelessly will scare animals away. Try to keep an eye out on your ammunition count. There are 20 shots per box, so plan wisely; it may be a long way until the next store. Certain times of the year are better suited for hunting than others. Also, different animals live in different terrains. When and where are you most likely to see a bear? Point at the edges of the screen to move left or right. Aim when you see a promising animal. Click to fire your gun. Do not hunt when you are near a city, town or a fort because animals do not live near people, so travel about 10 seconds, then you can hunt. Be careful loading and handling your gun. Accidents can and will happen. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent this. IMPORTANT NOTE: Suppose you have already shot 2 deer dead, then suddenly, you injure yourself with the gun. You will lose the meat from the deer you shot and will be brought back onto the trail. To counter this, stop hunting right after you kill something, so you get the meat and avoid getting hurt. IMPORTANT NOTE #2: Depending on your group members, you can only carry a certain number of pounds per round of hunting. Since my partners were all women, we could only take 180 pounds. If I shot a 500-pound buffalo, I waste 320 pounds because we could not carry them all. My advice: - Buy rifles only; do not waste money on a shotgun because you will not need it. Buy a back-up rifle instead. - Large animals will be walking towards you diagonally. Wait until they are walking horizontally for a better chance of killing them. - It may seem strange, but a buffalo can run with 4 injured legs. Go for a head shot or a heart shot to ensure that it will die. - Once an animal runs away, you can still shoot at them. When they start to run away diagonally, then the likelihood of shooting them becomes almost 0. - Once the animals run away, they will not come back. Stop hunting, travel for 1 second, than hunt again. The animals will be back. My List of animals to shoot or avoid: Kill these (in order of preference): Buffalo, Bear (Includes black and brown), Moose, deer. Avoid these at all costs!: squirrel, chicken, skunk, flying ducks, rabbit, and anything small and light. They do not give enough pounds for the bullets. LAST NOTE: If you happen to have some SALT with you, then you will automatically preserve some meat with the salt. Alas, we have reached the end of this section on hunting! Since meat is free and of abundance, you can trade away meat for stuff you need, like clothing. Salted meat is worth even more, so save up and trade them for good stuff! ---------------- Fishing---------------------------------------------- An expert angler like yourself can catch trout, catfish, salmon, bass, or walleye, depending on your location of the trail. What?! You do not know how to fish? I will tell you, but first: To go fishing, you need a fishing pole! If you don't have one, or lost it, then you will have to buy one or trade for one. You can get a fishing pole in Independence, where you first start off. Make sure you do not throw it away by accident! If you are not catching anything, try another part of the river. Be sure to note your location before you start to fish! If you try to fish in a desert, but not even you are that unknowledgeable, you probably will not find a stream. You will also lose a day of travel. If you catch a fish (which you will) you will see a message about the type of fish you caught and how much it weighs. The computer rounds down, so a 3.9 pounder is the same as a 3 pounder, unless you catch more fish to balance it out. The guidebook is a handy reference for more information, not that you need it. Like hunting, point toward the edges of the screen to move left or right. Point at the spot you want to fish and click. To cast, hold down the mouse button until the pole disappears and you get a view of the fish underwater. I would recommend fishing near rocky areas or grassy areas, where, just like in real life, fish hang out. Whew! Now, let's learn to catch fish! Fishing in this game is ridiculously easy and quick. When the fish has its mouth on the bait, click and you caught the fish! Whoo! Not even a struggle! I can catch 10 fish every 20 seconds. Fishing is a great way to earn quick, easy, and free meat. My advice: If you see a big, 20 pound catfish, wait until it bites. Ignore the bites from other fishes. Wouldn't you rather have a 20 pound fish instead of a 3 pound one? ------------------ Gathering Plants------------------------------------ Finding edible plants along the trail will increase your food supply and improve your health. Almost as important, it will raise the moral of your companions. People don't enjoy eating the same food everyday, so give them a little variety! Just do not feed them poisonous stuff. Make sure you know what you are easting! Some plants are poisonous; you will get sick or die if you eat it. So, use your trusty guidebook to look up any plant you are not sure about. The kinds of plants you come across will vary by region and season. For example, huckleberries grow in the mountains. What time of the year do you think the berries will be ripe? All I can tell you is that you have to look up any plant you are not sure of in the guidebook. The only two things you need to know is whether it is poisonous or safe. Throw it out if you know it is venomous. Keep it if you know it is safe. Some safe plants are dandelions and sunflowers. Gathering plants is not too difficult, even thought it may be tedious looking up every single plant in the guidebook. --------------------------- Events------------------------------------- There are over a HUNDRED events in the entire game that were true to people that traveled the real trails. How you react to these events will affect the outcome of the game. If you are not sure what to do, you can ask your partners for advice or consult the guidebook. You will mostly be relying on your common sense. Consider your overall situation. For example, resting may help a sick member of your party. However, if you are low on food, resting may not be such a good idea. Go hunting then rest? Now you are thinking! The different skills of your wagon party members have an affect on what happens along the trail. For example, if you chose a doctor, like Miles Butterfield, or YOU are a doctor, you are not so likely to get sick and be treated better. Your wounds will heal faster. If you chose a person who is good with animals, like Patricia Pendrake, then your oxen will be in good condition and will not run away. I did not pick her and I chased after lost oxen at least once a month, wasting 2 whole days in the progress. EVENT LIST: 1. You have lost an Ox! Options: - Search for it. - Continue without it. If you decide to search for it, then you will lose 2 days on the trail. If you have 8 or more left, you can save the time and go on without it. 2. You found ______! Fill in the blank with a random, edible plant. You do not get any options; you just get a few pounds of food added to your supply! 3. Buffalo Stampede! Options: - Wait for stampede to end. - Consult the map. - Go hunting If you wait, you will lose a day. I recommend going hunting for lots of free meat, if you can carry it all. 4. River Crossing Check out the Crossing Rivers section of the guide. 5. Steep Hill Check out the Crossing Hills section of the guide. 6. Broken Axel Options: - Try to fix it - Replace it with a spare The fix it, you need some basic tools. A very good idea would be to always keep spares handy. 7. Broken Wheel Options: - Try to fix it - Replace it with a spare Just like #6. Remember to always keep an extra just in case. 8. Abandoned Wagon Sometimes along the trail, you may see an empty, abandoned wagon or two. Options: - Search in the wagon - Leave it alone I always search the wagon and I usually find tools, like axes and hammers, and that's it. It may be different every time. I have also found water barrels. You can also take a day and take a wheel, too. 9. Strangers up ahead. This may be the time to trade for that item you have needed for many months, or maybe these people are dangerous? Options - Join their wagon party (Talk to them) - Ignore them When I talked with them, they seemed friendly, but it was obvious that they were giving bad advice, so I just traded with them and left. 10. Fever! Options: - Keep the patient warm. - Keep the patient cool and rest for a day. - Do nothing and go on - Rest for 2 days. The correct choice would be to keep the patient cool and rest for a day. You can only hope the fever will die down. 11. Bitten by rattlesnake! - Apply anesthetic and rest for 2 days. - Continue on as normal. - Apply treatment and continue on. My advice is to apply the anesthetic and rest. It will be better for your entire party, especially if you set the pace to grueling. A perfect excuse to rest. If you know of any events I have not yet mentioned, please contribute by e-mailing me to the address at the top of the FAQ. ---------- Other People you meet along the trail----------------------- Some people you meet on the trail will give you sage advice and even offer to trade with you! However, be on your guard because some people may give you bad advice, or even try to cheat you! Sometimes, you may get good stuff from trades, like the box of bullets you have needed badly for months. They can tell you about themselves, the surroundings, advice, and trade. At every city or fort you stop by, there will be at least 2 people you can trade and talk to. Trading is very easy. You can go and ask the person to trade. Then you will see everything they have in a rather small inventory. I don't know how these people survive with almost nothing. Trade some of your free meat here for stuff like bullets, clothing, and hides. Hides can only be bought in stores for outrageous prices. I never needed such luxuries since I was more interested in beating the rush to Oregon. You can only ask for one type of items at a time, while you can offer 2 different items. Be careful, because you will usually get ripped off. IMPORTANT: After you click trade, the person will either accept or decline. All trades are final. If you offer a deal that the other person likes, then you won't get a chance to change the deal. I lost 200-pounds of meat for 1 box of bullets, so be careful. Another thing I have noticed is that there isn't a way to get anymore money. Don't be careless and spend all of your money before you even get out of Independence. -------------------- Crossing Rivers----------------------------------- Near the end of their long, grueling trip, pioneers faced many difficult decisions. One of the more important decisions dealt with rivers. Should they take Barlow Toll Road? It is safe, but time consuming trail. Or should they raft down Columbia River instead? It is a dangerous but speedy trip. You will face many decisions regarding crossing rivers. When you reach a river, you will get a list of the options for crossing. Choose the method that will suit you the best. Be sure to check the condition of the river, your budget, and your schedule. If the water is about 3 feet deep, then you can ford the river now. If the river is 4-6 feet, then you can caulk the wagon and float. Otherwise, wait for a ferry. To make an informed decision, take note of the river conditions. The guidebook offers many tips on crossing different rivers. As long as you are on a river, do your best to avoid rocks, whirlpools, logs, and other hazards, otherwise you will crash and lose some supplies. At river crossings, steer wide so the current doesn't pull you into any hazards. Usually, you do not get any river over 3 feet, if you follow the trail suggested by the map. NOTE: By default, river crossings are automatic. To guide the wagon across the river on your own, go to the options screen and uncheck the box that says Disable 3D controls. This option is recommended only to users with 3D accelerator cards with full, Open GL support. Point at the top of the screen to start moving. Then point left or right to steer. IMPORTANT: Always look for a crazy man waving his hands at you on the other side of the river. Go to him and you will have crossed the river. ---------------------- Crossing Hills---------------------------------- Sometimes, along the trail, you will come across a steep hill. Just like crossing rivers, a menu of options will pop up. If the hill is very steep, and you happen to have some rope and chains, you can lock the wagon wheels and pull it up the hill! My personal preference for anything steeper than "fairly steep" is to unload and carry some supplies, then just slowly go across the hill. After you have chosen your options, then you will see a very cool mini clip of going up and down the hills! Like a roller coaster! My advice is to take a day and unload and carry supplies. That may take a day, but you know the old saying," Better safe than sorry". If the hill is fairly steep, you can just go over it without any trouble. Consult your partners or the guidebook if you still have further doubts. -------------------------------Hints and Tips------------------------- - Talk to your partners often. They will tell you if someone is sick or if they don't have enough clothing. - If you chose to have a doctor as a partner, make sure you gather plants and stock up on medicine. Buy maybe a couple of each to be prepared for anything. - ALWAYS refer to the map when you reach a trail split of river crossing, to make sure you are still going in the right direction. - Be careful and watch the health bars of you and your partners! Whenever the bar dips to below half, start resting immediately! The last thing anyone wants to do is to waste time and dig a grave. Be sure to gather lots of vegetables to counter deadly diseases. - It seems strange, but the accidents and diseases usually happen to YOU. So your health bar may be the lowest in the group. Just make sure to rest and eat plenty. - Depending on your partners, you can only carry a certain amount of meat each time you hunt. Suppose you shoot a buffalo. There is no point in continuing to hunt because that meat will be wasted. After you shoot some big game, exit immediately because you can also reduce the risk of injuring yourself. - Sometimes, when you run across a shop in a city, buy only stuff you need, and none of the extras like mirrors because those only waste time, money, and the strength of your oxen. - Don't EVER buy food or get it in trade from anyone, since you can get your own for free. ^_^ ----------------------- Legal Stuff---------------------------------- This document may be not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use. It may not be placed on any web site or otherwise distributed publicly without advance written permission. Use of this guide on any other web site or as a part of any public display is strictly prohibited, and a violation of copyright. ----------------------------FAQ---------------------------------------- How do I get more money? A. Well, for now, you can't. You get all your money from the wagon members in the beginning. Money isn't really important anyway. Food can be found along the trail, and you can trade for clothing, so you really only need money to buy a wagon and oxen. Even then, you should still have at least $100. How do I get water?! My people are dying of thirst! A. Oh, water is called "Water Kegs" and are located under Tools in any shop. They are relatively cheap and worth every penny. However, they are 10 pounds a piece, so they will slow your oxen down if you are in a rush to make it to Oregon. My people are starving! I have 1,000 pounds of meat! Why are my people still dying of hunger? A. Um... did you, by any chance, click on the "Bare-Bones" option in the rations? That means your people eat just barely enough to survive and nothing more. Just click on "Filling" and you problem will be solved. What job should I pick for myself? A. It's all up to you really. I chose to be a carpenter because then I would be able to fix broken wagon parts, like wheels or axels. As an added bonus, I get a pretty decent stack of cash too. What partners should I pick? If you decided not to choose a doctor as an occupation, it would be a good idea to choose Miles Butterfield. Always have at least one doctor who can take care of the ill. The second companion depends on your style! Do you want to pick someone good with animals? Do you want to travel with an Indian girl who knows the land well? I chose the lady who was good with animals, because I want to RACE to Oregon. This game is short anyway. It can be beaten in a couple days. Is it OK to go off course according to the bold line on the map? A. Of course it is Ok to go off course from the bold line. However, go at your own risk. Chances are that you will not find any towns or people to trade with so when you run out of supplies, your luck goes as well. Be careful, but if you find a quicker way to Oregon, please e- mail me so I can post it and give you credit. OMG!!!111!!!shift+1!! Why is my wagon going so slowly? It'll take FOREVER to get to Oregon!! A. Well, first, what did you set the pace to be? If you set it to steady, you will be traveling a long time. Another possibility is that you are carrying around too much garbage! NO! NEVER throw away your stuff. Trade it instead. Oh yea, when I played through this game, I had too much food and was only moving, like a mile a day. Wait, where is this Oregon place you keep yapping about? A. It is on a deserted island 10 miles off the coast of China... just joking; Oregon is on the west on the US, right near California. Send in your questions! ----------------------My Review of this game--------------------------- SCORE: 9/10 Oregon Trail 4th Edition is the fourth expansion in the popular series. It has updated graphics compared to the third one and is much more realistic. It was developed by the Learning Company and was designed for young people, as well as old, to teach them what life on the Oregon Trail was like. This game was made for education and entertainment. Gameplay: Gameplay is very good, with new additions and easier controls. I find that the controls are very easy to learn and beginners can pick it up very quickly. For example, to shoot, all you have to do is click the mouse. To control the wagon when you cross the river, all you have to do is move around the mouse. The game overall is very easy. I beat this game the second day I got it. Maybe it was because I rushed through it and nearly killed all my party, but it was pretty fast anyway. This game is very exciting and unpredictable. You may be healthy today, but tomorrow, you may be suffering from a sickness. The game isn't very hard at all. It IS realistic and can keep you busy for a couple of days. Story: This game is RPG style and the story is this: You have heard about people getting rich off in California and Oregon, and you seek to do the same. Guide yourself and two others to this golden land facing perils and danger. There are many options you can take, like straying away from the recommended course (like I did) and no two games are every the same. This game can also help you with history projects later on in the future, since its story is very close to what really happened in the past. Sound: Just the basic sounds here, and nothing more. What is good is that the people you talk to REALLY talk, and you are not just sitting there READING what they say. The sound of the rifle and the shotgun is good, and at the start of every event, you will here some sound pertaining to that event. For example, if you have a female in the party, she will go "Oh no!" ,every time somebody gets hurt. Graphics: Graphics are actually pretty good compared to earlier Oregon Trails. The people move around and talk like they would if they popped to life. When you cross hills, you get a roller coaster like scene of the wagon rolling down the hill. Very interesting indeed. The hunting, fishing, and plant gathering visuals are very advanced and excellent. Can't ask for much more than this. The river crossings have logs and other obstacles in the water that actually looks good. The people you meet and guidebook help a lot. The only problem I see is the plants section in the guidebook. In the guidebook, the plants are black and white, making it VERY painful to look up every plant to see if they are healthy or not. I recommend collecting only plants that you are sure of. Play Time: Not very long. Took me 2 days to beat it. It is fun while is lasts and you can always replay the game. Replayability: Quite a long time. The games addictiveness will keep it fresh even after a few years. It is worth playing again because each time you play it, you are bound to see new events and run into new obstacles. Final recommendation: Definitely buy it. If you get it as a gift, you should be thankful. This game is worth searching for. This game is kind of old, so you should be able to get this game for about $10. For a game this good, $10 is kind of cheap so I recommend that you buy it! --------------------------Credits-------------------------------------- Me- For writing this My cousin Stephanie, for letting me borrow her game.
