********************************************************** THE OPERATIVE : NO ONE LIVES FOREVER ********************************************************** Weapons and Gadgets FAQ by Sabier ********************************************************** Version Info ---------------------------------------------------------- Version 1.0 --- FAQ created on 16 Jan 2005. ---------------------------------------------------------- Prologue ********** No One Lives Forever is one of the defining games of our generation. Not only does it dabble in humour with spectacular success, but also includes pure visceral action rarely seen in FPS based games. Originality is its motto and it delivers it with a unique style. In most games, Weaponry and Auxiliary items are generally overlooked. Along with a Walkthrough FAQ, info regarding the various accessories in the game will provide greater detail to you. Since NOLF unfortunately lacks this FAQ, providing one will help you get to know the items much better and learn to use them in key areas more effectively. NOLF also has some of the most memorable Weapons and Exotic items. Each weapon has been discussed in detail along with its usage in various situations. Each item in the game has a certain advantage that is tailor-made to certain situations, but that is not to say you cannot be flexible in your approach to a specific problem. *General Note on NOLF weapons* -------------------------------------------- NOLF takes exceptions in weapon realism. Meaning, the weapons do not reflect their real-life predecessors with complete authenticity. For instance, all the weapons have a good target lock-on system and accuracy is almost 90-100% if the weapon reticule is focused on an enemy, no matter how far he/she is. This is more of an exception than a rule. Certain weapons have greater accuracy than others in this situation. (I'll explain this in detail once we get to the weapons). However NOLF mimics certain features such as shaky zooming. When the weapon scope is zoomed, the reticule sways and the further you zoom, the further it sways. Hence you do need to take into account the time required to hit a moving/stationary target to get a successful shot. For instance, when sniping a moving target at extreme range, you might have to shoot before the target actually appears at the center of the reticule, so as to cover the distance and speed of the target itself. If the enemy is stationary, then you'll have to impulsively pull the trigger once the cross-hair intersection falls onto his/her body. This is a cool feature that makes the game more challenging. ********************************************************** Weapon Section ********************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The description of each weapon is stated using the following attributes : Name: Class: Range: Accuracy: Ammunition: Enhancement: Silence Rating: Close Quarter Combat Rating: Description: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What does each attribute mean? ****************************** *Name* As the word suggests: The actual name of the weapon in the game. *Weapon Class* There are three common classes in weaponry. 1.Melee (A weapon used solely in Melee combat) 2.Ranged (A weapon used solely in Ranged Combat) 3.Melee Ranged (A weapon that needs to be close to an enemy to be effective) 3.Light Assault (A one handed weapon such as Revolver, Pistol etc) 5.Medium Assault Automatic/Semi-Automatic 6.Heavy Assault Automatic/Semi-Automatic 7.Heavy Grenadier (Rocket Launcher, Grenade Launcher etc fall into this class) *Range* Each weapon has a range of minimum effective damage. Beyond a certain point, its accuracy drops drastically and you'd need to waste a whole magazine to bring just one enemy down! A revolver is powerful at close range, but ineffective when used to kill enemy over 50 feet. Hence each weapon has a range rating based on its accuracy in the following format: 1.Low 2.Medium 3.High 4.Extreme *Accuracy* This is a corollary to the above attribute except that I will rate it based on which class in Range it falls into. The accuracy will be measured in a scale of 1-10. *Ammunition* There are only three types of ammunition a weapon in NOLF can have. Some exclusively host one type of ammunition, which I'll explicitly state. 1.Bullets 2.Arrows 3.Explosives *Enhancement* This simply states whether a weapon can have any add-ons such as Silencer, Scope or none at all. Note: Some mission will allow you to only select the weapon and not its add-on. Generally speaking, you can customize your inventory before you begin a chapter. *Silence Rating* A rating of 1-10 based on its noise, or 'none' if the weapon cannot be silenced. This rating is relative. It really depends how far or how close another enemy is relative to the one you are shooting at. *Damage Rating* Here, the damage rating is implicitly based on the bullets you use and which part of the body you shoot at. Mostly, a clear head-shot will make any weapon powerful. But on an average, it is the chest or the abdomen that are targetted the most. The rating is based on this assumption. However, as you progress through the game, you will clearly notice the differences. *Close Quarter Combat Rating* Some weapons work well only at long range while others excel at close quarters. Each weapon is rated on a 1-10 scale. Close quarters does not necessarily mean intense shoot-outs. It also indicates stealth-based kills. *Description* This is my general opinion of each item and what sort of situation is ideal for its usage. The description will be updated as when I replay the game or receive suggestions from NOLF fans, namely you!. ************************** ************************** List of Weapons ************************** Name: Shepard Arms P38 9mm Pistol ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Single-Handed Light Assault Range: 7/10, Medium Accuracy: 7/10 Ammunition: All bullets (not Explosive Tip) Enhancement: Silencer Silence Rating: 9/10 Damage Rating: 7/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 9/10 Description: This light baby is one fearsome weapon, if used right. A perfect weapon to take out guards silently. The Shepard host a 10-round magazine that can hold all types of ammunition, barring explosive tips. Since you can make location-specific damage, an accurate shot to the head using a FMJ, Phosphorous or Cyanide bullet will kill your enemy instantly. 2 rounds of other bullets types should be dandy enough. The gun also has a quick reload time and hence becomes the mainstay in your inventory throughout the game. Just try and use it with the Silencer though. Not much point using without it as the sound is very high. Name: Petri .38 Airweight Revolver ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Single-Handed Light Assault Range: 7/10, Medium Accuracy: 6/10 Ammunition: FMJ, Dum Dum Enhancement: None Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 8/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 9/10 Description: The Petri is your secondary weapon on many occasions. It packs a greater punch than the Shepard and has an almost equal reload time. Accuracy can sometimes be an issue since the gun has a fairly abrupt recoil. It is quite a fair complement with Automatic weapons in your arsenal, but I would recommend you use it only if you are left with no option. The Petri is a no-no weapon in stealth based mission. When being stealthy is not an objective, the Petri is a better bargain than the Shepard. Name: Braun 9mm Parabellum ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Single-Handed Light Assault Range: 7/10, Medium Accuracy: 6/10 Ammunition: FMJ, Dum Dum, Phosphorus. Enhancement: Silencer Silence Rating: 8/10 Damage Rating: 7/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 8/10 Description: A close relative to the Shepard, but quite an antique to boot. The Braun is quite a sturdy little stud, but in the playing field, it is the Shepard's inferior alter-ego. The Accuracy and Damage leave much to be desired, but it can be quite useful if you want to try out something snazzier than the Shepard. Its Silencer is pretty good and a clear head shot will bring down most enemies. Along with a 10-round magazine, the reload time is also one of the fastest, so you are never left facing the enemy with your pants down. However, if you have the option of choosing either the Shepard or the Braun...you know what'll last longer!. Name: Bacalov Corrector ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Single-Handed Heavy Assault Range: 9/10, Extreme Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: Exclusive, Explosive Tip Bullets Enhancement: Silencer Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 10/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 3/10 Description: The Bacalov is a special single-shot-single-reload weapon designed to kill an enemy instantly. This baby will rip through anyone, even at extreme range. It is one of the most, if the most powerful weapon in the game. However, it would be suicide to use it against a group of enemies at close quarters since it has a very long and painful reload time. But once done, somebody else will surely face the pain. The Bacalov has an extreme range scope so it's ideal to pluck of niggling foes on bridges, high rise areas etc. However, the scope sways a lot, so it'll take some practice to target. The ammunition is quite rare to find, so use it only when you must. Name: Hampton Carbine ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Medium Assault Bolt Action Range: 8/10, High Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: 9mm FMJ Enhancement: Integrated Silencer, Scope. Silence Rating: 10/10 Damage Rating: 9/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 7/10 Description: The Hampton Carbine serves as both mid-range sniper as well as close-quarter 'enemy sleeper'. It is one of the best weapons to clean out rooms quickly and silently. The best thing about the Carbine is that it has an integrated Silencer, which renders the weapon almost silent. The Scope makes the weapon much more flexible than other sniper-based arsenal since noise generated is practically nil. However, a miss-shot can make this weapon a liability sometimes, owing to its slightly long bolt action. This weapon should be strictly used as a mid-range sniper since you are assured of almost 100% kill rate. Don't miss this weapon out, even if your objective doesn't count stealth. Name: Sportsman EX Crossbow ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Medium Assault Bolt Action Range: 8/10, High Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: Exclusive, Arrows Enhancement: Scope Silence Rating: 10/10 Damage Rating: 10/10 (Head Shot) Close Quarter Combat Rating: 3/10 Description: The Sportsman EX Crossbow serves as both mid-range sniper as well as close-quarter 'enemy sleeper'. It is the second best stealth weapon in the game. The damage is maximised if you target the enemy's head. Do not attempt to hit the lower part of the body as the effect is minimal. What's worse, the enemy will become aware of your presence and the close quarter ability of the Crossbow is absymal. It also suffers from high reload time, but this weakness is assuming you are targetting a group of enemies and not one. The Crossbow has very decent ranged effect. The scope does not waver much and hence accuracy is pretty good. However, it is in close quarter stealth kills it shines the most. A great feature is that you can pick up the used arrows if they lodged into an enemy!. Not bad, right? Name: Hampton MPL 9mm SMG ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Medium Assault SMG Range: 8/10, Medium Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: All bullets (Except Explosive) Enhancement: Silencer Silence Rating: On (8/10), Off (0/10) Damage Rating: 9/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 10/10 Description: The Hampton MPL 9mm SMG is a small powerhouse of a weapon that is perfect for Close Quarter combat. Housing a 30-round magazine accommodating almost all types of bullets, this baby can bring down a host of enemies with just one clip. The reload time is very good and the rate of fire is very high. The word 'SMG' is a bit of a misnomer as you can unload an entire clip without pausing. The gun though, suffers in accuracy if used for ranged attack. The rate of fire and a distinctly unstable recoil would amount to some wastage of ammunition when firing. Fitted with a silencer, the gun has one flaw. It does not have the tactile advantage of a Crossbow or the Light Assault weapons in unloading just one well-placed shot. The gun invariably shoots more than one simply because the rate of fire is so fast. So you really gotta have calm hands when using it in Silencer mode. But in intense shoot-outs, the Hampton is second to none. Name: AK-47 Assault Rifle ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Class: Heavy Assault Automatic Range: 8/10, Medium Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: All bullets (Except Explosive) Enhancement: Scope Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 10/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 10/10 Description: The famed AK 47 makes its mark in the game and simply put, it is the best Automatic in the game. It does not have the high rate of fire as the Hampton of the Gordon SMG, but it feels just right. It houses a 20-round clip that can tear apart anyone silly enough to cross its path. 20 rounds sure don't seems enough in Close Quarter, but the sheer raw power (in both sound and damage) of the weapon more than makes up for the limitation. Fitted with a scope, the gun can now target enemies at 2x range. Make no mistake. This weapon can only be used in non-stealth based missions. The gun sounds really powerful. It does suffer from a 'fair' reload time and in Super Spy mode, you can't afford to take time reloading during intense shoot-outs. But barring this, there is no reason why you should ignore the AK. The AK 47 is a must for the visceral shooter. Name: Gordon 9mm SMG ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Medium Assault SMG Range: 7/10, Medium Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: All bullets (Except Explosive) Enhancement: None Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 9/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 9/10 Description: The Gordon 9mm SMG is the antique cousin of the Hampton. It also hosts a 30-round magazine that can accommodate almost all types of ammunition. What separates it from the pack is its distinct side-mounted magazine hold. As a result, the Gordon is terrific when strafing your enemies. It is very stable and has a very good rate of fire. It actually 'feels' and sounds more powerful than the other Automatics, but in reality, its damage rating is distinctly below them. This again is effective only in shoot-outs. The reload time is a concern, but if you do not have a choice for an AK or a Hampton, the Gordon more than meets your requirements in combat. Use it while strafing and u'll see it true advantage. Name: Morris Model 14 Spear Gun ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Melee Ranged Range: 6/10, Fair Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: Exclusive, Arrows Enhancement: None Silence Rating: 10/10 Damage Rating: 9/10 (Head Shot) Close Quarter Combat Rating: 3/10 Description: The Spear Gun is extremely effective in water. Hell, it is the only weapon that works in water. It shares most of the characteristics of EX Crossbow but does not share the same tactile advantage, namely ranged shooting. It has a the highest reload time for any weapon in the game. That makes the weapon suicidal in close combat, even against a single alerted enemy. However, a clean head-shot will almost always yield dividends. It true advantage is in water wherein two shots at mid-range is sufficient to fell down your foe. Since this is the only weapon that is works in water, it becomes your indispensable ally. Don't even think of not having one when wet!. Name: Geldmacher SVD Sniper Rifle ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Medium Assault Bolt Action Range: 10/10, Extreme Accuracy: 10/10 Ammunition: 9mm FMJ Enhancement: Integrated Scope Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 10/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 4/10 Description: The mother of all Sniper Weapons !. This baby rocks in ranged sniping. Simply put, this is one of the deadliest weapons at the hands of an expert marksman. The SVD is Soviet manufactured (Damn, those guys sure know how to make kick-ass guns) and it sports an integrated triple-zoom scope with a 10-round magazine. The interesting feature is that the gun's scope is an Image Intensifier. Meaning, it is a sort of a thermal signature scope. Your enemy is distinctly white while the background is light greenish, just like night-vision. The zoom is incredible. It suffers from high wavering at triple zoom though, which is expected. Mark anything that is white and BAM, he is dead !. Aim for the chest if you can't aim at the head. Either way, you got one really dead body. Name: Super Atomic Laser Weapon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Light Assault Range: 6/10, Fair Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: Integrated Energy Cell Enhancement: None Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 8/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 7/10 Description: A futuristic gun that fires high energy beams, which on successful hit, will disintegrate an enemy into thin air. This gun is pretty rare to find but can be chosen from t he roster once you complete the entire game. What's great about the SAL is that it has not clip, but an energy cell that can generate around 400 shots before depleting !. That makes this weapon almost overpowering, except for the fact that it has a short-range accuracy and need to be fired at least 2-3 times to kill a single foe. It is a single burst single-shot weapon, so don't expect great rate of fire. Nevertheless, it is a dandy weapon that shouldn't be taken too seriously, but if want something that doesn't have any annoying reloads, then look no further. Name: M79 Grenade Launcher ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Heavy Grenadier Range: 8/10, Medium Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: Exclusive Launcher Grenades Enhancement: None Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 10/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 3/10 Description: The Grenade Launcher is your standard US Army hand-held area-clearing single-shot device. It has high reload time and it is ideal for clearing up large group of enemies with a single precise shot. The Grenade Launcher packs a serious punch in power. A single hit on or near your enemy is enough for an instant kill. All other types of attack are meaningless with this one. Do not use this in Close quarters !. Keep a fair distance before using this baby. Name: Briefcase ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class: Heavy Assault Missile Launcher Range: 8/10, High Accuracy: 8/10 Ammunition: Exclusive, Missiles Enhancement: None Silence Rating: 0/10 Damage Rating: 10/10 Close Quarter Combat Rating: 3/10 Description: A NOLF special. More like, a UNITY special. It is literally a briefcase housing a missile launcher!. (Now how is that for ingenuity, eh?!). It is very rare to find cases where you can actually use it for full measure, but this is strictly a fun weapon. Please don't use it as a full fledged terminator. It basically showcases NOLF's sense of humour. However, it impact is not. It is perfect for stationary foes but hopeless when faced with aggressive enemies. The reload time is very long so be utterly cautious. Still, it is a fun weapon and you can show those pesky HARM agents your sexy new Samsonite!. ************************** ********************************************************** Gadget Section ********************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The description of each gadget is stated using the following attributes : Name: Class: Range: Accuracy: Primary function: Secondary Function Silence Rating: Close Quarter Combat Rating: Description: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What does each attribute mean? ************************** Some of the attributes have been removed while two new ones have been added.
