Portal 2 Achievements Guide Introduction: This guide will keep plot details to a minimum, but for ease of use some scenarios in game may be explained – to show what needs to be done to receive the achievement. With that in mind, if you want absolutely no spoilers, leave this guide until you’ve finished the Single Player mode! Also, much like Portal 2 itself, this guide is written for the PC version, then ported to the consoles! To that end, I will be noting the Gamerscore/Trophy for each achievement, though this is irrelevant to PC players. Also, achievements will be listed in the order you CAN unlock them, not the order they are listed on Steam. Single Player Achievements: Wake Up Call – 5gs – Bronze “Survive the manual override” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it early on in Chapter One. You Monster – 5gs – Bronze “Reunite with GLaDOS” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it near the end of Chapter One. Undiscouraged – 10gs – Bronze “Complete the first Thermal Discouragement Beam test” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it early on in Chapter Two, in Test Chamber 1. Final Transmission – 20gs – Bronze “Find the hidden signal in one of the Rat Man dens” This is unlocked in Chapter 2, in Test Chamber 6. Place the portals as usual to reach the end. When you press the button to receive the trash, catch the radio playing Still Alive. Now portal back to the entrance and place a portal on the closest slant, and another at the top of the wall to the left of the slants. Use the Aerial Faith Plate again, this time it will fling you into the den. Now move the radio around until it broadcasts an SSTV signal. Pturretdactyl – 5gs – Bronze “Use an Aerial Faith Plate to launch a turret” This is also available in Chapter 2, in Test Chamber 6. This time, instead of catching the radio, catch the turret. Occasionally the turret will not make it through the portals, so there is some luck involved in catching it. Now portal back to the entrance and drop the turret on the Aerial Faith Plate. Drop Box – 20gs – Silver “Place a cube on a button without touching it” This is ALSO available in Chapter 2, in Test Chamber 6! This time, press the button to get the trash, then leave the first portal on the right slant, place the second portal above the button. Push the trash button again, now the cube should hit the first slant, portalling through fall directly on the button. Preservation of Mass – 20gs – Bronze “Break the rules in Test Chamber 7” This is obviously unlocked in Chapter 2, in Test Chamber 7. This chamber has a faulty Emancipation Grill, allowing you to take items from it with you. Complete the chamber, then on the way out, place a portal on the wall just past the grill, and another on the floor of the chamber. Drop down one level to grab the cube, then into the portal. Carry the cube to the elevator to get the achievement. Unlocking this will also unlock a flag for use in Co Op. Overclocker – 30gs – Silver “Complete Test Chamber 10 in 70 seconds.” This is obviously unlocked in Chapter 3, in Test Chamber 10. There is no shortcut to this, it just involves practice. As soon as you enter the room, put the portals up to fling across and grab the cube. Jump on the Aerial Faith Plate to hit the first barrier, then place the cube to block the laser and lower the barrier. Hit the Aerial Faith Plate again to land on the second barrier; remember to place a portal on the surface opposite the laser receiver. Now press the button to receive a laser redirect cube, stay where you are, the cube will come to you – then fall down one level to place it in the laser’s path, and aim it towards the portal surface at the other end of the chamber. Place a portal there to connect the laser to the receiver one level up, then grab the first cube you dropped there, fall down, and ride the Aerial Faith Plates to the exit! Bridge Over Troubling Water – 10gs – Bronze “Complete the first Hard Light Bridge test” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it early on in Chapter Three, in Test Chamber 11. SaBOTour – 10gs – Bronze “Make a break for it” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it toward the end of Chapter Four. Good Listener – 5gs – Bronze “Take GLaDOS’ escape advice” This is unlocked near the end of Chapter Four, shortly after getting SaBOTour. GLaDOS will ask you to complete the optional Test Chamber 22. Do it to get the achievement. No Hard Feelings – 10gs – Bronze “Save a turret from redemption” This is unlocked during Chapter Five, on the ramps leading to the incinerator. A defective turret will be on the line, moving towards you – it’s the one that says “I’m different...” – pick it up to get the achievement. Scanned Alone – 5gs – Bronze “Stand in a defective turret detector” This is unlocked during Chapter Five, on the defective turret line. After removing the template turret, but before replacing it with the defective turret, stand in the detector. Stalemate Associate – 15gs – Bronze “Press the button!” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it near the end of Chapter Five. Schrodinger’s Catch – 20gs – Bronze “Catch a blue-painted box before it hits the ground” This is unlocked during Chapter Six, near the end of the first Enrichment Sphere. A cube is sealed in a glass box, which you need to paint with Repulsion Gel to break out. Simply catch the cube, before it hits the ground, to get this achievement. This is more luck than anything else, as it is near impossible to predict which side of the glass box the cube will break out. Vertically Unchallenged – 15gs – Bronze “Master the Repulsion Gel” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it during Chapter Six, after completing the first Enrichment Sphere. Tater Tote – 15gs – Bronze “Carry science forward” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it near the end of Chapter Six. Door Prize – 20gs – Bronze “Examine all the vitrified test chamber doors” This is unlocked during Chapter Six. You need to find 6 doors, which are located in 2 separate groups of 3. The first set of doors is located early on, before starting the Repulsion Gel tests – a section requires a long jump by placing a portal on a slant, then falling down an elevator shaft. The first 3 doors are on the wall underneath this slant. Examine the buttons next to each door to hear some audio play on each one before proceeding. The second set of doors is located in the control room at the end of Chapter Six, where you unlock Tater Tote. Portal up to the catwalk at the very top of the chamber, you will find an office. Behind a file cabinet on the left wall of this office is a door leading to a corridor with the second set of doors. Ship Overboard – 10gs – Bronze “Discover the missing experiment” This is unlocked during Chapter Six. In the same corridor as the second set of vitrified doors for Door Prize is a large empty chamber. Enter this chamber and examine the item at the end of the catwalk to unlock this achievement. Portrait of a Lady – 10gs – Bronze “Find the hidden portrait” This is unlocked near the start of Chapter Seven. After completing the first Propulsion Gel test, but before proceeding to the next one – on the catwalk between tests, look to the left. Behind a gate is a portal surface. Portal across to find the portrait. Stranger Than Friction – 15gs – Bronze “Master the Propulsion Gel” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it during Chapter Six, after completing the second Enrichment Sphere. White Out – 15gs – Bronze “Complete the first Conversion Gel test” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it during Chapter Seven, after the first test involving the white Conversion Gel. You Made Your Point – 10gs – Bronze “Refuse to solve the first test in Chapter Eight” This is obviously unlocked in Chapter Eight. To get it, do nothing during the first test, when you need to push a button to drop a cube on the button to open the door. After a minute or 2, the achievement will unlock. To clarify, the test you need to refuse is the same one you complete twice for the following achievement. Dual Pit Experiment – 15gs – Bronze “Do the same test twice” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it near the start of Chapter Eight. Tunnel of Funnel – 15gs – Bronze “Master the Excursion Funnel” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it near the start of Chapter Eight, in Test Chamber 1. Smash TV – 75gs – Bronze “Break 11 Test Chamber monitors” This is unlocked during Chapter Eight. Starting with Chapter Eight’s Test Chamber 1, you have to break the big screens in each Test Chamber to unlock this achievement. This can be done in a variety of ways – flinging your body into them using portals, flinging cubes, redirecting lasers, but usually there’s only one solution to each chamber’s monitor. There is one monitor in each chamber, with the exception of Test Chamber 5, which has two monitors. The Part Where... – 20gs – Bronze “This is that part” This is unlocked during the course of the storyline. You will receive it at the start of Chapter Nine. Pit Boss – 30gs – Bronze “Show that pit who’s boss” This is unlocked in Chapter Nine, immediately after unlocking “The Part Where...” turn around and jump in the bottomless pit. Lunacy – 20gs – Gold “That just happened” Finish the game to unlock this. :D Co Op Achievements: High Five – 5gs – Bronze “Celebrate your cooperative calibration success” This is unlocked at the very start, as soon as you meet up with your Co Op buddy, throw him a high five! Professor Portal – 75gs – Gold “After completing Co Op, complete Calibration Course online with a friend who hasn’t played before” This will be quite difficult unless you arrange it beforehand – complete the co op game, then start playing again with someone who has never played it before. This is sheer luck, unless you find someone and arrange to play with them. Team Building – 10gs – Bronze “Complete all the Test Chambers in the Team Building Co Op course” You’ll unlock this as story progression in Co Op. Iron Grip – 20gs – Bronze “Never lose a cube in Test Chamber 6 of the Mass and Velocity Co Op course” This is challenging – requiring perfect timing from both players the first time around. Just practice it a few times, then start a fresh run and grab it first time. There’s no trick to it, other than good timing. Triple Crown – 15gs – Bronze “Complete 3 Test Chambers in the Mass and Velocity course in under 60 seconds” As with many Co Op achievements, this is self explanatory and just requires a lot of practice and coordination with your partner. Confidence Building – 10gs – Bronze “Complete all Test Chambers in the Mass and Velocity course” You’ll unlock this as story progression in Co Op. Empty Gesture – 25gs – Bronze “Drop your partner in goo while they are gesturing by removing the bridge” This is first available in the second Co Op course, Hard Light Surfaces. Get your partner to gesture while standing on a bridge created by your portals, then remove it, dropping them into lethal goo. Can’t Touch This – 10gs – Bronze “Dance in front of a turret blocked by a Hard Light Bridge in Co Op” This requires the dance gesture to be unlocked. After that, put a Hard Light Bridge in front of any turret and bust a move. Portal Conservation Society – 20gs – Bronze “Complete chamber 3 in the Hard Light Surfaces course using only 5 portals” Again, just requires planning. Be sure to coordinate with your partner and get it right the first time. Bridge Building – 15gs – Bronze “Complete all Test Chambers in the Hard Light Surfaces course” You’ll unlock this as story progression in Co Op. Still Alive – 15gs – Bronze “Complete course 4 with neither you nor your Co Op partner dying” Practice, practice, practice! Just practice the course a lot, and play it carefully. Obstacle Building – 15gs – Bronze “Complete all Test Chambers in the Excursion Funnel course” You’ll unlock this as story progression in Co Op. You Saved Science – 100gs – Gold “Complete all Test Chambers in all Co Op courses” Finish the Co Op game to unlock this. Gesticul-8 – 15gs – Bronze “Perform all 8 gestures of your own volition in Co Op” You will unlock more gestures with each completed Co Op course. Some of them can be initiated by the other player – so ‘own volition’ means you need to initiate each gesture yourself. Party of Three – 25gs – Bronze “Find the hidden Companion Cube in a Co Op Test Chamber” This is fairly well hidden. It is in the final chamber on the Excursion Funnel course, in the last section of it, just before finding the disk. To reach it, you need to point an Excursion Funnel down a dead end right before reaching the room with the disk. You will need your partner to lay down a Hard Light Bridge to cover the both of you while you’re in the funnel, as turrets will be shooting at you the whole time. Eventually, you’ll see the Cube, the achievement will unlock, and you will be crushed to death! Sorry. Narbacular Drop – 25gs – Silver “Place a portal under your Co Op partner while they are gesturing” Very easy to unlock any time in Co Op. One caveat seems to be that you need to place the exit first, then the entrance under your partner. Putting the entrance portal under them, having them gesture and then placing an exit does not seem to work. Air Show – 20gs – Bronze “Perform 2 aerial gestures before touching the ground in Co Op” You can accomplish this through infinite drop portals, or very high flings, but it’s even easier to simply float in an Excursion Funnel and gesture. Four Ring Circus – 25gs – Bronze “Enter 4 different portals without touching the ground in co op” This can be quite difficult to pull off without some thinking in advance. The easiest way to accomplish it is to have one bot set up in a long fall, passing through his partner’s portals, then setting his own 2 on the floor. There is one area towards the end of the Co Op game which is especially good for this challenge, in the final course, but it could be achieved many other places in game. Asking For Trouble – 10gs – Bronze “Taunt GLaDOS in front of a camera in each of the 5 Co Op courses” This is simple enough, just remember to make a gesture in front of the camera in each course; even high fiveing your teammate on completion of each course will do it. Rock Portal Scissors – 20gs – Silver “Win 3 Co Op games of Rock Paper Scissors in a row” This is pure luck. Just use the Rock Paper Scissors taunt over and over until you get 3 wins in a row. It is completely random, but the game seems kind enough to hand out winning streaks. If you get 2 in a row, you’ll likely get the third. Friends List With Benefits – 50gs – Silver “While playing Co Op, hug 3 different people on your friends list” This one is simple enough, after unlocking the hug gesture, just play Co Op with 3 different buddies and give em a hug.
