System: PC running Windows 95/98 Maker: 闇奉行カンパニー Yamibugyou Company, 2000 May 14 http://www2.odn.ne.jp/ojo-noyokusitu/ Requirements OS: Windows 95/98 *Installs on Japanese version only CPU: Pentium 166MHz or higher (MMX 233MHz or higher recommended) Memory: 32 MB or higher (64 MB or higher recommended) Graphics: 640x480 (256 Colors), DirectX 7 or higher Hard Disk: 600 MB to install (maybe only 300 MB, depending on where you look in the instruction manual) Optional Sound Card: DirectX 3 compatible sound card Game Pad: A windows compatible game pad. What is "Hokuto de BON!"? ========================= Based on "Hokuto no Ken", (which is known in the US as "Fist of the North Star", [even though "Hokuto" actually means "Big Dipper" and NOT "North Star"!]) Hokuto de BON!! is a lot like an old game called "Breakout" (or another similar old game called "Blockbuster" for the Commodore 64) combined with Capcom's "Super Puzzle Fighter II X". In these games (Breakout and Blockbuster) you hit a ball with a paddle. The ball bounces against blocks at the top of the screen and breaks them. When the ball comes back toward the paddle, the paddle must not let the ball get past it. The goal of the game was to break all of the blocks at the top of the screen. In HDB, the Ball is replaced with a fist, the paddle replaced with the top view of a character, and the blocks are replaced with the heads of mohawked punks. You are also now playing against an opponent. When you break the blocks, they go to your opponent's side of the screen. You also have a life meter. If the blocks go past the yellow line near the bottom of the screen, your life meter is decreased. The game is over when either you or your opponent's life meters reach 0% (or if the time runs out). Installation: ============= This game will not fully install on the US version of Windows 98. If you try to install "Hokuto de BON!!" on the US version of Windows 98 the install program will fail when it tries to copy a shortcut to their homepage. (This is because the name of the file contains Japanese characters. The US version of Windows 98 doesn't accept most Japanese characters in filenames.) But the game can be made to run on the US version of windows if you have access to another computer that is running the Japanese version of Windows 95 or 98. 1) First, install the game on the computer running the Japanese version of Windows. (The install program should have no problems on the Japanese version of Windows.) 2) Next, run the install program on the US version of Windows. The program will fail as described above. 3) Look in the directory C:\Program Files\YAMI\HDB\ on the computer running the US version of windows. (Your HD might have a different letter than C.) There should be three subdirectories called AVI, DAT, and WAV. The install program installed all of the files contained in these subdirectories; the only ones not installed are the files in the main directory. 4) Go to the same directory (C:\Program Files\YAMI\HDB\) of the computer running the Japanese verison of Windows. Copy all of the files from this directory (but not the subdirectories) onto some type of removeable media. If the only option you have is floppy disks than you don't need to copy the HDB_OP.avi file. On the removable media, rename any files containing Japanese characters so that they no longer contain Japanese characters. (There should only be one file that needs to be renamed.) 5) Copy the files from the disk into the C:\Program Files\YAMI\HDB\ folder on the computer running the US version of Windows. If you were using a floppy disk and couldn't copy the large HDB_OP.avi file from the Japanese computer, copy another movie file into the C:\Program Files\YAMI\HDB\ directory and rename it to HDB_OP.avi. To play the game, run HDB.exe (which is in C:\Program Files\YAMI\HDB\). Controls ======== You can play the game using the keyboard or a gamepad. You don't use the mouse. Unlike a lot of games, I find it is just as easy to use the keyboard as it is to use a gamepad. It says: Congratulation! ただいまをもって悪党の魂が10000人天に召されました。これ を記念してお孃の浴室公式マスコットキャラクター「ミーナ」が 登場します。口が少々悪いけれどもぜひかわいがってあげてくださいね。 (It says something about 10,000 villains going to heaven, and that you've been officially awarded Mi-na, the official mascot.) エンディング1 This option becomes available after you've beaten Kenshirou Story Mode. エンディング2 This option becomes available after you've beaten Miena Story Mode. BGM 効果音 戻る Characters: =========== ケンシロウ Kenshirou --------------------- Drops sets of 10 Heads. 隙間無く.... (I'll translate this later...) HHHHHHHHHH Special Move (Level 1): Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken. Kenshirou's punches destroy all the heads on his side and sends them to his opponent's side. Special Move (Level 2): Musoutensei. Kenshirou's punches send the heads on to his side to his opponent's side. Then the "Hokuto Shichi Sei" appears on the opponent's side and additional damage is done to the opponent. ハート Heart ----- Drops sets of 4 heads HH HH HH HH Special Move: The heads on Heart's opponent's side of the screen become Heart's heads, which are much larger and require multiple hits to destroy. シン Shin ---- Drops sets of 5 heads: H H H H HHH HHH Special Move: Shin's hands destroy heads on both his and his opponent's side. The heads destroyed on the opponent's side cause damage to the opponent. レイ Rei --- Drops sets of 4 heads: H H HHH HHH Special Move: Hisshou Hakurei: Rei slices through several rows of heads on both his and his opponents fields. The yellow bar on his opponent's side becomes much higher. (It slowly lowers with time, eventually returning to its original position.) ジャギ Jagi ---- Drops heads in sets of 2 H H H H Jagi is probably the weakest character in the game. He almost always loses. When Jagi's super meter becomes full, his hand will cover up the ball on his opponent's field. Super move: Jagi's hand cover's up his opponent's side of the screen. サウザー Souther ------- Drops geads in sets of 5: HHH HHH H H H H Special Move: Souther swaps fields with his opponent. (The heads in his opponent's field switch with his own.) Souther can also prevent his opponent from performing his special move; Right when his opponent starts to do his special move, (if Souther's meter is full) he can execute his special move to stop his opponent. (If this is successful, an animation of Souther waving his finger back and forth is shown.) トキ Toki ---- Drops heads in groups of 4: HHH HHH H H Special Move: Tokei Kouhou: While Toki is performing this move (there will be an aura around him while it is active) any damage that would normally be applied to him will damage his opponent instead. (If you are fighting against Toki, DON'T use your special move while he is doing his!) ラオウ(拳王) Raou ---- Drops heads in groups of 5: HHHHH HHHHH Special Move (Level 1): Tenshou Honretsu: A beam of light shoots from Raou's palms, destroying all of the heads in his field. Each head destroyed causes damage to his opponent. Special Move (Level 2): Musou Tensei: Raou's fist comes up and destroys all the heads in his field (hurts opponent), then comes down and destroys the heads in his opponent's field (which also hurts his opponent). After that, the Hokuto Shichisei (7 Big Dipper stars) are drawn over the opponents field, which glow and then disappear, causing even more damage to the opponent. Note: When you K.O. your opponent with Raou, "拳王" (Ken'ou) will be written on screen instead of "K.O." Hidden characters: To get Maruchi and Akari, beat Story Mode on the easiest difficutly setting. To get Miena and Yuria: I don't remember what exactly I did to get them. If you beat Story Mode on all of the difficulty levels, and also beat "Suto~ri~ Mode" (Miena Story Mode) you should get these characters. マルチ Multi (Maruchi) --------------- This character looks like Kenshirou wearing a schoolgirl outfit, a green wig, and weird white things covering his ears. She(?) also has a pair of nunchaku, which she uses to bust heads in her special move, which works similarly to Kenshirou's "Hyaku Retsu Ken" level 1 super move. (This character did not actually appear in the "Hokuto no Ken" comics or anime. As far as I know, this character was created by the creators of this game.) あかり Akari ----- Akari looks like Raou wearing a wig and a Japanese sailor schoolgirl outfit. Her special move is similar to Raou's "Tenshou Honretsu" move. (Akari's wig comes off when she does this move!) (This character did not actually appear in the "Hokuto no Ken" comics or anime. As far as I know, this character was created by the creators of this game.) ミーナ Mi-na (Miena) ------------- Mi-na is the mascot of the Yamibugyou Company, who created this game. Special Move: Mi-na calls out Heart and various mohawkked punks from the "Hokuto no Ken" series. Then, wave after wave of these heads come and fill up her opponent's field. ユリア Yuria ----- Unlike in the comics, Yulia is probably the most powerful character in the game. (But she has other people doing her fighting for her.) Yuria has four men who love her protecting her: Kenshirou, Shin, Toki, and Raou. Two of them will be on screen in front of her. Her level 1 super move is just one of the super moves of the two men guarding her. Her level 2 super move is that 1 man will perform his super, then the second will perform his super move. If Kenshirou or Raou is the second man, he will perform the Musou Tensei. I think it would have been really neat to have had the Goshasei Yuria instead of Ken, Shin, Toki and Raou. But I can understand that they probably didn't want to make a bunch of new animations just for one character. Thanks ------ Tetsuo Hara, Buronson: for making "Hokuto no Ken". Jim Breen: for making EDICT (a Japanese-English dictionary),which I used to help translate some things. My brother, for bringing this game (Hokuto de BON) home from Japan.
