Introduction/FAQ (Forseeably Asked Questions) This is my guide to the music of Monkey Island 3, the Curse of Monkey Island. Like many adventure gamers, I bought the game when it came out several years ago, played it a few times, and then set it aside. Recently, I came across an article on the internet about a new period of creativity and revolution in the music of entertainment, specifically games and movies. Monkey Island 3 was their very first example, and the one the author liked the most. After reading that I dug out the game, got a program called ScummREV, and started listening to the music of the game. This guide is the byproduct of that. FAQ: - Why did you write this guide? - To keep track of the different songs. ScummREV does not display the full name of the song when you browse the list; I needed an easy way to know what was what. I also wanted to renew interest in a truly cinematic score for a game that is largely forgetten now. - What's this program you used to get the music? - Scumm Revisited, or ScummREV for short, is a program that allows you to browse the resource files of most LucasArts adventure games. A resource viewer allows you to look at graphics, scripts from the game, and listen to audio. It is freeware, and you can download it at http://scummrev.mixnmojo.com/. - How do I get past (fill in puzzle here)? - This isn't that kind of guide. There is nothing in here to help you get through the game, only information to allow you to better enjoy or appreciate the music. - Couldn't I just open the resource file myself and take a look at the song title? - Well, yes, but isn't this so much easier? - Where are the music files for the game stored? - On the game CD, in a folder called Resources. The music is in a file called Musdiskx.bun. You will need ScummREV to open the resource file and listen to the music. - Can I email you with comments/suggestions/corrections? - Sure. My email address is pigsflew3000@hotmail.com and I check it often. II. Notes on the Music As I have said above, the music for this game is truly remarkable and one-of-a-kind. Composed by Michael Land, a very prolific composer at LucasArts, it is often musically and literally very dynamic. Monkey Island 3 was one of the first games to use a dynamic music system to seamlessly blend variations on a theme. A perfect example of this is on disc one, in the Barbery Coast. Tracks 1286 to 1289 are all variations on a theme set in track 1285. When you talk to one of the characters in the Barbery Coast, the music changes to reflect who you are speaking with. The transitions are not abrupt, and neither are they a simple crossfade. The music is composed to leave points where a variation can cut in on the theme. In theory, this sounds as if it would be quite jarring and obvious, but in practice it leaves the listener thinking that they are listening to an orchestrated piece that just so happens to coincide with what is happening onscreen. Another interesting feature is the Pirate's Life song (2311). In playing the game, you are given a choice as to what dialogue to use, prompting the next verse. If you listen to that track in ScummREV, you will hear that it is in fact one long song. It is completely seamless, even if you listen to it in its entirety. The extended version of the Pirate's Life song is really quite entertaining, so give it a listen. My picks for the absolute best tracks are: 1285 - 1289, 1477, 1460, and 2311. All of the music is worth listening to, but the interludes only really work in the context of the game. Enough of me, though. Start listening! III.
