It's one of the best pirate games out there and offers unique gameplay that isn't found in any other game. Each team has multiple ships and each player has their role on the ship to try to sink any opposing ships while keeping yours afloat. If you enjoy firing cannons and realistically loading them back up this is for you, if you love watching bodies fly from explosions this is for you, or even if you like to really cosplay a pirate, board an enemy ship, steal their supplies, and bring them back to your ship, this is the game for you! It's a rather unique experience. I feel like people have always wanted a pirate game and here it is. The gameplay is rather basic but it's simple, it works, and most importantly, it's a lot of fun. The community is great and you'll get a lot of people who just love cosplaying, making the game that much more enjoyable. I highly recommend playing with a couple friends on the same ship as it makes the game infinitely more fun but often times, even if playing alone, you'll run into fun teammates who love cosplaying as pirates and they'll make it even more enjoyable. Overall, I feel like it's the community that makes this game as great as it is so hop in, let loose, and enjoy some pirate naval warfare! _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 2. - Game Modes MODE02 _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Currently there are only three true game modes in Blackwake. You'll see more game modes in the server browser but they're all variations of team deathmatch, henceforth known as TDM. In this section of the guide, I will briefly discuss all the game modes and the objectives of each one. Every game does have a timer which can be viewed from the objective overlay by holding Q. If either team can reach the objective in time, the team closer to the objective will win. ____________________________________________________________________ _____ ____ __ __ |_ _| _ \| \/ | | | | | | | |\/| | | | | |_| | | | | |_| |____/|_| |_| ____________________________________________________________________ TDM is simply team deathmatch. In team deathmatch, your goal is simply to outkill the enemy team. Each team has a set amount of tickets per round. You can view how many tickets you have as well as how much time is left by pressing Q. You can only see your own ticket count and every time someone dies, you will lose a ticket. Your goal is really to drain your opponent's ticket count to 0 so it's really just making sure you outkill your enemy. Sinking ships will obviously deplete more points as the whole enemy team will have to die and respawn on their boat. There are multiple different versions of the game mode, as you will find on the server browser. They are any of the following: * TDM_Fleet - 3 vs 3 ships, 1 large and 2 small on each side * TDM_1v1_Galleon - 1 vs 1 ship, 1 galleon on each side * TDM_1v1_Hoy - 1 vs 1 ship, 1 hoy on each side * TDM_2v2_Galleon - 2 vs 2 ships, 2 galleons on each side * TDM_2v2_Hoy - 2 vs 2 ships, 2 hoys on each side ____________________________________________________________________ ____ _____ ____ / ___|_ _| __ ) | | | | | _ \ | |___ | | | |_) | \____| |_| |____/ ____________________________________________________________________ CTB is short for capture the booty. It's the only true objective based game mode as you cannot win by depleting the opposing team to 0 tickets, both sides get infinite tickets for this game mode. In CTB, there will be a booty that spawns on a tower in the center of the map and you have to return it to your base. There are only two hoys on each side. Your base has a cannon on it that fires several shots that can deal devastating damage to an enemy ship. It just takes a while to travel so it's very tough to hit moving targets. The goal of this game mode is to capture the booty 3 times to win. There are draws if the timer runs out and both teams are tied. You can press Q to find out what the score is, the timer, and to see where the booty and both bases are. You can see the booty even when it's being carried through walls so use this to your advantage. Unfortunately you can't drop the booty unless you die so you may want to suicide in your ship's cabin to leave the booty there and to get back to your duties on deck. I have two strategies that I recommend in this game mode that I've had great success with. The first is don't just rush the booty right away. Too many people do and they leave their ship mostly abandoned. If you grapple an enemy ship that's on the shore, it will sink once everyone on deck is dead. That's usually just one or two people. Grapple a ship while the rest of their crew is trying to secure the booty, kill the people on board, and their ship will sink instantly. Then the people on the island have nowhere to go and when you do kill them, will have to spawn on the other side of the map. The other key strategy is only when you are safe at your own base with the booty. Wait there for your ship to get back to the center island before capturing the booty. This will give your team time to set up for the next booty once you capture this one. Just be careful of anyone that may be waiting on the island for you. On the contrary, if you're near the enemy base, it's not a bad idea to try to ambush them by hiding out there while they send one guy to the tower. You likely won't be able to get the booty of their island since your ship will likely be long gone but if it's the dying minutes of the game, it could kill just enough time to secure a win. ____________________________________________________________________ _____ _____ _ |_ _| __ ___ __ _ ___ _ _ _ __ ___ |_ _| __ __ _ __| | ___ | || '__/ _ \/ _` / __| | | | '__/ _ \ | || '__/ _` |/ _` |/ _ \ | || | | __/ (_| \__ \ |_| | | | __/ | || | | (_| | (_| | __/ |_||_| \___|\__,_|___/\__,_|_| \___| |_||_| \__,_|\__,_|\___| ____________________________________________________________________ Treasure Trade is a mixture of TDM and CTB. In Treasure Trade, both teams have a set amount of tickets that slowly diminish as they die. However, in addition to standard deathmatch, there is also a booty to capture and bases. If you capture the booty, it will diminish the enemy team by 100 tickets. There are also 3 ships like the standard fleet version of TDM as well. If you disliked CTB because it didn't have galleons but you still liked the idea of CTB, give Treasure Trade a shot. You may think losing 100 tickets is too punishing but you start with a lot more and it's basically the same as CTB in the sense that if you can capture the booty 3 times first, you'll win. This might be a game mode you want to play if you like to play with friends and one of you like capture the booty and the other doesn't, it's just a best of both worlds kind of game mode. Unfortunately, it is the least popular. Everything the same really applies as I mentioned in the sections above, you can press the Q button to see where the ships, bases, and booty are. You still want to focus on trying to get the booty as often as possible even though it's not the only objective. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 3. - Equipment EQUI03 _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are 5 total equipment items that you can carry on your person at a time in Blackwake. There is a main weapon, side weapon, melee weapon, and special item. The fifth is always a repair tool, every player gets a repair tool to keep the ship afloat. For more details on how to use it, check out the "Keeping Your Ship Afloat" section of this guide (AFLO04.) ____________________________________________________________________ __ __ _ ___ _ _ | \/ | / \ |_ _| \ | | | |\/| | / _ \ | || \| | | | | |/ ___ \ | || |\ | |_| |_/_/ \_\___|_| \_| ____________________________________________________________________ * Musket The musket is a standard single shot rifle. All of the guns have long reload times but this is the most accurate and has the shortest reload time of all the main weapons. You can use the iron sights and actually snipe people on other ships very well. It's mostly a one shot kill and has a long range while being very accurate. I highly recommend targeting the enemy captains whenever you can with this. It's my personal favorite just because of it's range and accuracy. * Blunderbuss The blunderbuss is essentially a shotgun. It's only viable in close range and has a long reload time but you can take out multiple enemies up close with a single shot. However, the stars almost have to align and you have to get an opportunity with multiple enemies standing next to each other. For that reason, I can't recommend this gun. It's too situational and only reall useful for boarding and as crazy as it seems, I think the hand mortar is the best gun if you plan on boarding a lot of enemy ships, I will explain why below. * Nockgun The nockgun is basically a mix of the musket and blunderbuss. It shoots 7 shots at a time but is also accurate. Think of the musket except with 7 barrels instead of 1. The main tough thing with the nockgun is that while it's accurate, you can't use the iron sights which makes it a bit less reliable. It also takes a very long time to reload. You may want to give this a go, maybe it'll suit your playstyle, but I like the simplicity of the musket due to it's much faster reload time and the fact that you can use iron sights. * Hand Mortar The hand mortar is a grenade launcher. I actually love this when you're on a ship that likes to ram and board enemy ships. If you plan on being close to enemy ships often, you can often get a couple kills per shot by just launching a couple grenades onto the enemy ship. Unlike all the other main weapons which have unlimited ammo, the hand mortar only has 3 shots which you can't refill until you die and respawn. The reload time is also surprisingly quick, the quickest of all the main weapons. You can usually get two hand mortar shots into an enemy ship unless you're flying by them. After you launch a grenade, you can also just quickly jump onto their ship and board them with a side weapon or even just a melee weapon. It's just a great opener when you plan on boarding an enemy ship to get a couple kills before you even board, causing some major chaos before you even truly start your attack. ____________________________________________________________________ ____ ___ ____ _____ / ___|_ _| _ \| ____| \___ \| || | | | _| ___) | || |_| | |___ |____/___|____/|_____| ____________________________________________________________________ * Standard Pistol The standard pistol is my go to side arm in Blackwake. It's one of two side arms that you can use the iron sights on by pressing the right mouse button. It has the best accuracy for a side arm and can pack a pretty good punch. You could often one shot enemies with this and even snipe people pretty well. It's the best all around side arm in the game in my opinion and can be used in any situation. It also has a fairly quick reload speed, especially for how accurate it is and the power it puts out. * Duckfoot The duckfoot is basically a side arm shotgun. It fires off four shots in a line and can get multiple kills in one shot. It's essentially the side arm version of the blunderbuss. It's very situational, has a long reload time, can kill multiple people in one shot, but isn't very practical. If you plan on just boarding enemy ships, firing a shot, and quickly switching to your melee weapon until you either die or get back on your boat, it might be a viable side arm. But I still suggest just about any other side arm over it for the reload time alone. * Short Pistol The short pistol is basically a weaker version of the standard pistol with a quicker reload time. It's the only other side arm that you can use iron sights on. It doesn't deal as much damage as a standard pistol but the reload time is quite a bit faster. The range is also quite a bit worse than the standard pistol. That being said, I don't recommend the short pistol. The quicker reload time does not make up for the less damage as often times that you're using a side arm is while you're boarding a ship or defending your own. Usually when you're in the act of boarding a ship, you're rushing the enemy and will switch to a melee weapon so you'll take your shot with a side arm and switch to the melee when you have to reload. * Annley Revolver The annley revolver is a decent side arm but it's not for everyone. It's similar to the short pistol but can fire eight shots before you need to reload. It doesn't pack much of a punch but several shots without having to reload can make up for it's weaker punch. The tricky thing is this is best used when trying to go for headshots while boarding enemy ships but you can't use its iron sights. If you can pop a couple people in the back of the head, it makes for a great weapon, but it's not very consistent. I suggest giving this gun a chance to see if it fits your play style, especially if you're on a ship that likes to board enemy ships often. * Matchlock Revolver The matchlock revolver is basically a stronger annley revolver. It deals more damage but you can only fire three shots before you have to reload and it has a slower rate of fire. It still has a long reload time but if you don't like the annley revolver, you can still give this gun a try. It's definitely a close second for me vs the standard pistol but you may prefer the matchlock revolver over any other side arm. Just note, you can't use the iron sight on the matchlock revolver either which is what hurts it for me. ____________________________________________________________________ __ __ _____ _ _____ _____ | \/ | ____| | | ____| ____| | |\/| | _| | | | _| | _| | | | | |___| |___| |___| |___ |_| |_|_____|_____|_____|_____| ____________________________________________________________________ * Cutlass The cutlass is kind of your standard sword. It causes low bleeding damage and can be used with medium speed and medium power. It takes 3 swings to kill an enemy with it. It does attack in a sweeping motion so it is possible to hit multiple enemies in one swing. The cutlass is a fairly solid weapon in a category where no weapon truly shines. * Rapier The rapier is a faster and weaker version of the cutlass. However, it does deal more bleeding damage. It usually takes 4 hits to kill an enemy with but could take 3 with the added bleed damage if you're lucky. This is a solid alternative to the cutlass. I suggest trying both to see which sword better fits your playstyle. * Dagger The dagger is fairly weak and takes several hits to kill an enemy. You can attack quite a bit faster than with the rapier or cutlass but I don't think it's worth it. It's a decent weapon when defending a ship as it does have a high bleed and you just need to get one good hit on an enemy attacking your ship, then you can try to block until they bleed to death. But considering that, I still think it's probably the weakest melee weapon. * Broken Bottle The broken bottle causes very high bleed damage, to the point where you just need to hit an enemy once and they will likely bleed out to death. It's a good attacking weapon when you plan on boarding enemy ships but that's about it. It's all about hit and run to try to just tag as many as you can and hope they bleed out to death. It does have a very high attack speed but will take too many hits to kill an enemy that you don't even want to try stabbing them to death with it. Hit them once and run away if you're using the broken bottle. * Two Handed Axe The two handed axe is the strongest melee weapon in the game but with that comes the slowest attack speed. You only need 2 swings on an enemy to kill them. Bleeding isn't usually much of a concern when you can kill them so quickly but it doesn't deal too much for bleed damage. This is all about just being efficient with your swings. If you can land most strikes, this is a pretty handy weapon to run with. If you just spam your swings and hope to hit as many as you can, I suggest avoiding the two handed axe. * Boarding Pike The boarding pike is another solid weapon to run with. It has the longest range out of all the melee weapons. It basically has the same qualities as the cutlass, about medium power and attack speed, but it attacks in a straight motion, not a swiping motion. It still takes 3 strikes to kill an enemy, similar to the cutlass, but your attacks are more precise over a longer range rather than a sweeping motion over a closer range. This is another weapon to experiment with. It's personally my go to melee weapon of choice as it's not very often that you can take advantage of the sweeping strike of a cutlass but the added range can always be helpful. The attack speed also doesn't feel crippling like the slow swings of the two handed axe. ____________________________________________________________________ ____ ____ _____ ____ ___ _ _ / ___|| _ \| ____/ ___|_ _| / \ | | \___ \| |_) | _|| | | | / _ \ | | ___) | __/| |__| |___ | | / ___ \| |___ |____/|_| |_____\____|___/_/ \_\_____| ____________________________________________________________________ * Grenade The grenade doesn't need much explaining, it's a handheld explosive that you toss to kill enemies with. You have to light the fuse before throwing it by pressing the right mouse button. Once you light the fuse, you have about 7 or 8 seconds before it explodes so plan accordingly. This can be a pretty useful tool if you plan on going near enemy ships often enough to use them but if that's the case, I suggest the hand mortar. You only get 2 grenades which you can only replenish by dying and respawning. If you plan on boarding enemy ships often, you'll probably die a lot, but items like the health beverage or spyglass will see much more use than the grenade. The only time I would recommend taking the grenade is if you're playing with a couple friends and other people in your ship use the spyglass and health beverage. * Tomahawk The tomahawk is actually rather pointless in my opinion. It's just a hand thrown axe which can kill people but you have to aim ahead and it drops over distance. It's only really useful at closer range and at that point, there are several other better choices than a tomahawk. You only get two tomahawks which you can only replenish by dying and respawning. Overall, this is the worst special item in the game and unless you want to get some laughs and bragging rights, I'd suggest never even using these. * Health Beverage The health beverage is definitely the most useful item in the game. This has unlimited uses and you can even pass them out to your teammates. If you see a red cross on any of them, you certainly want to give them a drink so they can survive. Even if you're on the lower levels of the galleon, you will constantly be taking damage just for cannon fire. This isn't just a specialized item like the grenade or tomahawk, this is an item you will use in every single game. As a result, I pretty much always take the health beverage. The only other item I would take instead is the spyglass but if you have one or two people with it that use it constantly, there's not much point in taking one yourself. Just make sure to keep using it until the screen clears up when you take damage as you can bleed to death in this game. * Spyglass The spyglass is an essential item but not everyone needs one. In fact, you only truly need one on each ship. Having 2 isn't a bad idea to have a back up or even 3 if you're on a bigger ship like the gallleon. Simply point it in the direction of an enemy ship and anyone on your ship can see how far it is so they can fire cannons accordingly. The distance status will remain on the ships you spot for about a minute or so. If you're using the spyglass and aren't using the cannons too often, make sure to keep the spyglass handy to keep your shipmates informed on the enemy's positions. This is the only special item I recommend other than the health beverage but communicate with your team with it. There's no sense in most of the ship having one. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 4. - Ships SHIP04 _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Blackwake currently boasts five different ships. In this section of the guide, I will go over each one with details of everything you could possibly need to know about each one. It's very possible to fall off a ship, especially when attempting to repair sails. If you do, there's a pair of ropes at the front and back of each ship. They will be on both sides of the ship. If the ship is moving, aim for the rear rope for whatever side you're on and try to grab on to climb up. If you miss, you'll just have to suicide to respawn on the boat. Captain's aren't going to go back to pick up one crew member that fell off, nor should they. ____________________________________________________________________ _ _ _____ __ | | | |/ _ \ \ / / | |_| | | | \ V / | _ | |_| || | |_| |_|\___/ |_| ____________________________________________________________________ * Crew Size - 7 * Cannons - 8 * Swivel Cannons - 2 * Swivel Anti-Sail - 2 * Pumps - 1 The hoy is a smaller ship that can only boast a 7 man crew. It's very maneuverable and quick. An elevated platform in the back is used by the ship's captain to steer the ship while the rest of the deck will be used on the main deck. There is a cabin towards the back of the ship, under where the captain stands, that has two cannons, one on each side. The supplies are also in the cabin. There are also windows on the side of the cabin that can be used for sniping crew members of nearby ships. Outside the cabin and towards the middle and front of the ship lies the real meat of the ship. There are three more cannons outside on each side, totaling for six cannons outside. There are two swivel cannons in the center of each side and two anti-sail cannons at the front of the ship. The pump is just behind the mast and buckets will be towards the front right of the ship. You can climb up the riggings on each side of the mast to repair the sails as needed. Overall, there's not much special about this ship. The cabin can make good space for one person to dedicate themselves which helps spread out the rest of the crew to be better utilized outside. It has 2 anti-sail cannons so it can do a great job chasing down ships and even running away when being outnumbered. ____________________________________________________________________ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ | | | | | \ | | |/ / _ | | | | | \| | ' / | |_| | |_| | |\ | . \ \___/ \___/|_| \_|_|\_\ ____________________________________________________________________ * Crew Size - 7 * Cannons - 9 * Swivel Cannons - 2 * Swivel Anti-Sail - 1 * Pumps - 1 Much like the hoy, the junk is a small and quick ship. It also boasts a 7 man crew with 4 cannons on each side and an elevator platform in the back for the captain. There is a cabin below the captain's platform, where you can find more supplies, but there are no cannons in there. There are, however, platforms on each side of the cabin. These might seem like good ideas to snipe from but they actually leave you exposed to the enemy. I suggest staying away from those platforms as much as possible. There are four cannons on each side with a swivel cannon on each side in the center of the four cannons. The pump is directly behind hte mast and the buckets will be towards the front of the ship. The very interesting thing about the junk, which makes it stand out big time, is the fact that the front end is completely open. There's a single anti-sail cannon there and a regular cannon pointing straight forward. Since there is no nose, you could ram enemy ships and still remain mobile as there's no nose to break. The junk is best used by very aggressive captains that like to get up close and personal with enemy ships. ____________________________________________________________________ ____ ____ _ _ ___ ___ _ _ _____ ____ / ___| / ___| | | |/ _ \ / _ \| \ | | ____| _ \ \___ \| | | |_| | | | | | | | \| | _| | |_) | ___) | |___| _ | |_| | |_| | |\ | |___| _ < |____/ \____|_| |_|\___/ \___/|_| \_|_____|_| \_\ ____________________________________________________________________ * Crew Size - 7 * Cannons - 10 * Swivel Cannon - 2 * Swivel Anti-Sail - 1 * Pumps - 1 If the hoy and junk are small ships, think of the schooner is a medium ship. It can still only hold 7 crew members but boasts the largest firepower out of allthe 7 man crew ships with 10 in total, 5 on each side. That captain is not elevated at all and there is no cabin to seek shelter in. The Schooners are still quick but not quite as maneuverable as a junk or hoy. Furthermore, there is only one anti-sail swivel on the front of the ship which can make it rather tough to chase other ships with. With 5 canons on each side, this ship can actually deal some heavy firepower, especially since just about everyone can fire a cannon on one side at the same time. There is only one pump which is in between the two masts. Buckets of water are behind the front mast and the supplies are behind the rear mast. The schooner is a great support ship and should work more heavily with a galleon or cruiser as necessary to help take down ships as a tandem. ____________________________________________________________________ ____ _ _ _ _____ ___ _ _ / ___| / \ | | | | | ____/ _ \| \ | | | | _ / _ \ | | | | | _|| | | | \| | | |_| |/ ___ \| |___| |___| |__| |_| | |\ | \____/_/ \_\_____|_____|_____\___/|_| \_| ____________________________________________________________________ * Crew Size - 13 * Cannons - 20 * Swivel Cannon - 2 * Swivel Anti-Sail - 2 * Pumps - 2 Galleons are much larger than any of the other ships I've reviewed so far in this guide and as a result, boasts a larger crew size and can hold 13 men. The captain's platform is elevated towards the rear of the ship. There are several different levels to this ship but you will primarily only use 2 of them. The top deck has 4 cannons, two on each side, as well as a swivel on each side. Towards the front of the ship is another elevated platform with anti-sail cannons but these admittedly don't get used too often. There are buckets on the top deck, close to the front left cannon. It will be next to the door that leads to the nose of the ship. Entering the cabin towards the back of the ship is the stairs to the lower deck and another room just behind the stairs where you can pick up the supplies. The lower deck is where your firepower is. There are two cannons pointing straight to the back and two cannons pointing straight ot the front. In addition to those 4 cannons on the lower deck, there are 12 more, 6 on each side. There are two pumps on the lower deck, both near the center, and buckets in between the pumps as well as at the back of the lower deck. You may think you will remain safe being in the lower deck with walls all around you but you are probably more likely to die down below as the other ships cannons are usually hitting the hull of the ship and not the top deck. That being said, you should still have most of your crew in the lower deck. You should be looking to have 2 people on the top deck. The Galleon is very slow and doesn't maneuver well at all but it boasts a lot of firepower. If you're in a 7 man ship, don't even bother trying to take these one on one because you will lose. Galleons need to communicate heavily with their team and your team should communicate heavily in taking down enemy galleons. ____________________________________________________________________ ____ ____ _ _ ___ ____ _____ ____ / ___| _ \| | | |_ _/ ___|| ____| _ \ | | | |_) | | | || |\___ \| _| | |_) | | |___| _ <| |_| || | ___) | |___| _ < \____|_| \_\\___/|___|____/|_____|_| \_\ ____________________________________________________________________ * Crew Size - 13 * Cannons - 20 * Swivel Cannon - 2 * Swivel Anti-Sail - 2 * Pumps - 2 The cruiser is very similar to the galleon. They are very large and don't maneuver very well but they do still hold some differences. The cruiser also houses 13 men and the same amount of cannons but the layout is quite a bit different. There are only two decks, an upper and lower deck. The upper deck only has 2 swivel cannons, one on each side, and 2 anti-sail cannons. The anti- sail cannons are actually posted at the rear of the ship rather than the front like they are on every other ship in the game. These should definitely be used when you're making an effort to escape to safety to slow down any chasers. The lower deck is where the crew will be. There are ten cannons on each side with none facing the front or rear. There are two buckets on the entire ship and they are both on the lower deck which could make putting out fires in sails a pain to deal with. The buckets will be at the front of rear of the ship. Next to each set of buckets is also a pump, for two total. The interesting thing about this ship, other than having all the cannons in the lower deck, is that there's a large hole in the upper deck that you can just drop down to the lower deck from. The only way to reach the top deck is a staircase in the rear of the ship but if you're on the top deck, you can always just jump down below either to get cover or to just quickly man a cannon. The only thing that is really of value on the top deck is the supplies, which will be just behind the rear mast. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 5. - Repairs REPA05 _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Every round you play will force you to take time to repair your ship. Fortunately, everybody carries a repair tool with them, it's not even an option, you have to have one. Whenever your ship takes a standard cannon shot, it will cause a hole and water will start flowing in. The more cannon shots you take, the more holes you get, and the faster your ship will sink. It's important to patch holes as quickly as you can before they start to get overwhelming. Holes can be spotted from fairly far away while holding your repair tool. They will be highlighted with one of two colors, either red or green. A red space means it needs to be repaired and nobody is repairing it. A green space means it needs to be repaired but somebody is repairing it. Two people cannot repair the same hole and the only indicator that you're the one repairing a hole is a repairing bar filling up. Often times, someone will be right next to you and you may think you're repairing it but it could be the teammate so make sure to keep an eye out for that repair bar. The top of the screen will have an indicator for how your ship needs to be repaired. Obviously, the higher the number of holes, the more focus your crew needs to have on repairing them. The top will also saying either ship low on water, some pumps active, or (all) pumps active. The pump is at the middle of each ship. The only ships with more than one pump are the 13 man ships, the galleon and cruiser. In addition to repairing holes, you need to make sure someone is on the pumps. The pump will slowly pump out water and will keep you afloat for longer. If nobody goes on the pump and people just focus on repairing, water will keep rushing into the ship and you will sink in no time. Just note, it may say you have 0 holes but the indicator talking about ship low on water or pumps active will still be there. That's because there's still water on the ship and you need to keep pumping to get the ship back to 100%. The indicators at the top of the screen will go away once all the water is pumped and there is nothing to repair (holes, sails, or nose.) In addition to the pumps and repairing holes, there are still two other things that need repairing but these don't necessarily keep your ship afloat, these are all about your ship's maneuverability. The first is the nose. All ships, with the exception of the junk, has a nose that will break once you crash into an enemy ship. Once the nose is broken, the ship will remain immobile until it gets repaired. In order to repair it, you must repair it three times. Repairing does stack so if you have three people starting repairing at the same time, once all three finish, the nose will be fully repaired. Whenever the nose is broken and you're looking to move, even if you see someone repair it, you still want to help repair the nose. The other thing to repair is the sails. Anti-sail swivel cannons can seriously slow your ship down. You can climb the riggings on each side of the ship, just be careful not to fall off the ship, to reach all of the sails and repair them. If you're trying desperately to run away from a ship, you may want to have one or two crew members just focused on repairing the sails. Sometimes your ship can actually catch fire. Nothing seems to really trigger it but it seems to randomly happen at times. Whenever you see a fire, don't run into it! You will burn to your death! Instead, head towards the front of the ship. You will find some buckets. Each bucket is just one time use. Throwing it onto a fire will put out a small section of the fire. You want to make sure to put it all out quickly before it spreads and starts killing everyone. In addition to your ship randomly catching fire from standard cannon shots, some cannons could actually break and remain unusable. All you have to do is use your repair tool on it to get it back in working shape. When you do finish repairing it, you will have to reload it, even if it was fully loaded before it broke. There are currently two nature events in the game that can destroy your ship. One is a volcano. The volcano is only one one map and it erupting will completely destroy your ships and crew. There's really no defending this and when it happens, it just happens. The other is water spouts. You will see water spouts sometimes occur in stormy maps. It's completely random if they appear or not but your captain will need to keep an eye out for it. If you get too close, it can toss crew off the ship or even sink the ship entirely. If you do get close as the captain, your best bet is to put up the sails and head inside, just hope for the best. Water spouts are definitely avoidable however and a good captain should be able to keep his crew alive when one appears. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 6. - Cannons CANN06 _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are two types of cannons in Blackwake but each cannon has different types of ammo to use. In this section of the guide, I will explain everything you need to know about every cannon. ____________________________________________________________________ ____ _____ _ _ _ ____ _ ____ ____ / ___|_ _|/ \ | \ | | _ \ / \ | _ \| _ \ \___ \ | | / _ \ | \| | | | |/ _ \ | |_) | | | | ___) || |/ ___ \| |\ | |_| / ___ \| _ <| |_| | |____/ |_/_/ \_\_| \_|____/_/ \_\_| \_\____/ ____________________________________________________________________ The standard cannon can be quite complex. You have to go through every step possible in loading it. Near ever standard cannon, you'll find a supply box. Each supply box only holds 12 supplies. If you pick up an item from a supply box and change weapons, you will essentially hold its charge. For example, if you pick up gunpowder, bringing that supply box down from 12 to 11, and someone else loads the cannon you were going to load, you could switch to a shot and it won't take another supply from the box or you can switch to a weapon. If you switch to a weapon, you can't switch back to whatever supply you have but you can still pick one up from a box without actually removing one from the box. The steps you have to take to load the cannon is packing the gunpowder, then putting in a type of shot (more on that below,) ramming it all in with the ram rod, and then pushing the cannon forward. Once you push, you can actually leave the cannon, it will wheel into position. Once it's in position, you can equip a lighter and view a crosshair (more on that below as well.) Just fire off a cannon shot at the appropriate distance. You do not need to adjust for travel time of the cannon ball so make sure the ship you are trying to hit is in your crosshair and just adjust for distance before firing. Types of Shots * Standard Cannon Ball The standard cannon ball is your regular shot that can deal massive damage to enemy ships. This is what you will be using in most shots and it looks like what you expect a cannon ball to look like, just a large, black, spherical object. It can easily kill people as well and is viable at any range. * Grape Shot The grape shot is a specialty shot. It looks like a brown sack with a bunch of smaller balls in it. The grape shot is basically like a shotgun blast but coming out of your cannon. It is only useful at short range and is completely useless as long range. You don't want to load up all the cannons if you plan on doing a short range drive by, just a couple at most. But if you can fire them at a very close range, you're almost guaranteed a couple of kills. If you can safely fire off cannons while grappled at the enemy, I suggest going for grape shots every time. * Grappling Hook The grapple is exactly what it sounds like but changes gameplay quite a bit. You have to be close to hit an enemy ship with it. You can only load it upon captain's orders and everyone needs to be on the same page. The respawn time is raised big time to two minutes, as opposed to no more than 10 seconds. Once everyone on a ship is dead, that ship will sink. You can release a grapple by interacting with it for about 10 seconds. Those are the only two ways to end being grappled, the whole crew of one ship dies or it gets released by a player. Two ships can, in theory, be grappled the whole round if neither of these actions occur, it's just highly unlikely that they can stay grappled that long. If you're grappled and your team is mostly dead, I highly recommend just hiding out somewhere and hoping the rest of your crew can respawn. ________ | | While aiming the standard cannons, you will see the crosshair to the | O | left in the box. This is the distance that the cannons can fire. You | - -4 | can see the distance to the ship by pressing Q after they've been | - -5 | spotted by a crew member's spyglass. You do not have to calculate | - -6 | travel time, only distance in your shot. When you hold Q, the | | distance does not automatically update so make sure to hold it right | - -7 | before you take your shot to be accurate. For example, if it says an | | enemy ship is 600 meters away, just have the ship on the 6 line to | - -8 | hit it. Anything at 300 meters or closer will automatically hit if | | you aim with the circle at the top of the crosshair and lighting a | | fuse without even looking down the barrel of the cannon will default | - -9 | to 300 meters. This is a very useful tip to know when you're running | | | down the line of cannons trying to destroy a ship in close range |________| when most of your crew is dead or repairing. ____________________________________________________________________ ______ _______ _______ _ / ___\ \ / /_ _\ \ / / ____| | \___ \\ \ /\ / / | | \ \ / /| _| | | ___) |\ V V / | | \ V / | |___| |___ |____/ \_/\_/ |___| \_/ |_____|_____| ____________________________________________________________________ Swivel cannons are a lot less complex but also a lot less useful. They are the small cannons that are on the edges of the ship, usually on the front and sides but they are also on the back of the cruiser. You just simply have to run up to them and use them. The crosshair is just a circle and doesn't show distance. There is still quite a bit of drop in your shots but you just have to figure it out for yourself. The swivel cannon will reload itself and show the reload bar on the bottom of the screen in the process. There are only two types of shots in swivel cannons which I will discuss below. The tough thing about the swivel cannons is that they don't provide any splash damage. Your shot has to be dead on a target to cause any damage and at that point, aside from the anti-sail, it's pretty useless compared to a musket. Types of Shots * Normal The normal swivel is always going to be on the sides of the ships. They do not deal any damage to a ship and can only kill crew members. It is a one shot kill but it is very hard to aim since one or both ships are usually moving and there is some travel time. You're better off using a musket if you're trying to snipe particular crew members. * Anti-Sail Anti-sail swivels should see a lot of use. You have to fire directly onto an enemy's sails but it will tear them apart. This will cause the enemy to slow down and they'll have to switch their crew to repairing the sails, moving valuable resources off cannons. This is a great tool to catch up on enemy ships as every ship, with the exception of the cruiser, has the anti-sail swivels on the front of the ship. As most ships don't have cannons on the front, it's still useful to use even when just turning into position. Anything you can do to damage an enemy's ship, even anti-sails that just damage sails and not the ship itself, will help your team out. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 7. - Captaincy CAPT07 _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Being captain is one of the last things you want to do. Afterall, how are you
going to be a good captain when you're not sure how everything else on the ship
works? At the start of each round, you can nominate yourself to be captain and
then there is a vote. You can vote in the top left corner by activating your
cursor (T) and clicking on whoever you prefer. If you regret your decision, you
can vote to mutiny the captain by pressing escape. You'll need enough people to
vote to mutiny and someone else will randomly be chosen to captain.
When you feel confident in your abilities as a crewmember, you can take a stab
at being captain. The key role of a captain is to drive the ship and to give
orders to your crew. First, you'll have to head to the upper levels of the ship
towards the back to find the ship's wheel. You have to be standing on the small
platform behind the wheel to actually use it. You can increase your speed by
putting down your sails with the left mouse button and slow down by pulling the
sails back up with the right mouse button. There are a couple different speeds
so if you want to completely stop or go full speed, hit the correct mouse
button a few times. You can obviously steer the ship with A & D by default and
get off the wheel by backing away from it, S by default.
Now that you know how to steer the ship, it's important to note that your crew
knows what to do! Since you should have a firm grasp on how to play as a crew
member, you should know where people should be. If there are holes and nobody's
repairing them, tell your crew to get off the cannons and start repairing the
ship! If you plan on attacking a ship from port side, tell your crew to get
ready on the port side cannons. A captain needs to communicate with his crew in
order to be successful in Blackwake.
One thing you will desperately need to learn is how to line up your shots. On
most ships you will see some planks on the ground on each side of the wheel.
They will be pointing straight to the side of your ship, the same angle as the
cannons your crew is using. Try to use those as a guide to know how to line
your ship up. It'll take some practice and judgement calls but that's a good
starting point. Again, communicate with your crew. People will tell you if you
need to bear left or bear right a little bit to line their shots up. When your
crew is liking the angle, pay attention to where the ship is in relation to you
so you can get an even better feel for how to target enemy ships yourself.
While you want to pay close attention to position yourself to take on other
ships, you also want to keep your head on a swivel. Look around you, take note
of where the other enemy ships are, where your friendly ships are, any
obstacles in your way such as water spouts or islands. If you have to turn,
warn your crew so they don't waste a shot. You also need to know when to
retreat. If you're taking a lot of hits you may want to veer off and let your
crew focus on repairing the ship before you take even more damage.
You need to know your match ups. If you're in a small ship, don't go after a
larger ship. You will not win that fight. Smaller ships are faster and more
maneuverable, use those traits to your advantage. Maybe if you know you have a
galleon coming you can serve as a distraction and let your galleon come in and
destroy another ship. If you're on a galleon, you should be able to take on
anything one on one with a good crew but don't get in over your head. Don't
just charge the whole enemy team by yourself thinking you're invincible because
you most certainly are not.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
* Communicate
I cannot stress enough how important communication is with this game. It's
important in every game but especially in Blackwake. Tell your crew you have
the holes, tell your captain to bear left a little bit to get that enemy in
your crosshair. If you're the captain, tell your crew they need to focus on
repairing holes or sails or whatever. Everyone should know if you're going to
ram a ship to board. Everyone should know what's going on. If your captain
doesn't have a mic, you're doomed from the beginning. A mic is still highly
recommended as a crew member but not a necessity, it's an absolute necessity
for being a captain.
* Snipe the Captain
A great strategy for whenever you're getting close to an enemy ship is sniping
the captain with the musket. The captain will be exposed on every single ship
on the top deck and they won't be moving at the wheel. The musket is a very
accurate long range rifle in the game and you shouldn't have much problem
picking the captain off with its iron sights. If you can kill the captain,
their ship will just be left drifting in whatever direction it's facing for
about 10 seconds until the captain gets back at the helm. Even leaving their
ship captainless for that short time can be deadly for them.
* Reloading
Reloading takes a very long time in Blackwake. As a result, you never want to
really try to reload if you're boarding a ship but you want to take whatever
chance you can to reload when you're safe on your own. Never forget which gun
is loaded and make sure to reload during downtime. Sometimes if you get hit by
a single cannon ball while you're reloading, you may want to finish reloading
before you repair a hole. Moments like only having 1 hole isn't an emergency to
quickly jump and repair, just finish reloading before moving on to something
else. Just make sure to know when to prioritize things. Obviously if your ship
has 6 holes, stop reloading to repair!
* Choosing Your Shot
When loading cannons, you want to make sure to choose the right shot for the
right situation. This does play in a large part of communication as the captain
should be ordering his crew what to load. However, if you know you're going to
be heading in close to an enemy, you should have one or two grape shots loaded.
Tear apart some of the crew of enemy ships with the grape shots so it'll be
harder for them to repair and deal damage.
* Boarding Enemy Ships
Boarding enemy ships is a great strategy to deplete their tickets and is a ton
of fun. Learn how to maximize your efforts. If you plan on boarding ships
often, take the hand mortar and litter their deck with grenades before
boarding. Try to get a kill with your sidearm and then switch to your melee
weapon instead of reloading. If you have a weapon with a high bleed, especially
the broken bottle, just hit everyone once or twice to cause them to bleed and
move on to the next person. Try to get people from behind and especially the
ones on the pumps to try to sink their ship. You can cause a lot of chaos if
you can stay behind the enemy and keep stabbing them.
* Terminology
Know what your terms are! Most importantly:
Port (Side) = Left Side
Starboard (Side) = Right Side
* Using the Overlay
You get an in game overlay by pressing Q. This is very important, it will show
you which ships are friendly, how much time is left, how your team is doing on
the objective, and how far away enemy ships are to aim your cannons. Make sure
you make a lot of use of the Q button because this overlay gives vital
information that you will often need to win games.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This game, unfortunately, doesn't teach you very much and there are some odd
things that you might not know how to do because of it. I hear questions fairly
often in game and to try to solve what basic questions you have, I decided to
add this section. You can still feel free to contact me with any other
questions you may have, I can always add them to this list if they aren't
covered elsewhere in this guide. Simply email me at FrankTheTank3388 [at] gmail
[dot] com or message me on GameFAQs directly.
Q - I just joined a game and I have no weapons, what gives?
A - You have to select your loadout first, look at the bottom of the screen, it
should be the M button by default. Normally games have you pick a loadout
before you spawn but for whatever reason, this game has you pick a loadout
after you spawn and won't let you do anything other than run around the
ship until then.
Q - How do I stop pumping? Pressing the use key again doesn't work.
A - To stop pumping or to back out of any action, literally just hit the back
key, S by default.
Q - Why do I die after we've pulled away into safety?
A - Whenever you take any damage, you're bleeding as well. You can bleed out to
death so make sure to drink health beverages until your screen becomes
clear again.
Q - I just died but the game is telling me I have to wait 2 minutes to respawn
instead of just a few seconds like normal, why?
A - This happens when you're on a ship that is either grappled or is grappling
an enemy ship. Whenever two ships are grappled, the spawn timer is raised
to two minutes and stays that way until every member of one of the ships
is dead. If your team is losing the fight heavily and you're one of the
last remaining members of that ship alive, you may be best off trying to
hide. Often times, hiding on the mast in the sails is a great place to
hide until your team can respawn. It may take a while but if your team can
respawn, it could help you win that battle. Alternatively, if you find the
grapple, you can disconnect it, you just have to interact with it for
about 10 seconds and everyone's spawn timer will be reduced to the normal
time.
Q - I can't look around anymore and I see my mouse cursor, what do I do?
A - T is by default a button to activate the cursor, this is used for voting.
Just hit T again, the cursor will go away, and you can look around again.
Q - Which side is port or starboard side?
A - Port Side = Left & Starboard Side = Right. If you're having trouble
remembering, I just think of it in alphabetically order, you'll read left
to right and P comes before S.
