===================================DISCLAIMER================================== I have decided not to allow websites other than Gamefaqs (www.gamefaqs.com), IGN (faqs.ign.com) & Gamespot (www.gamespot.com) to host my FAQs from now on. Please don't ask, because I will not grant permission. It's just that too many sites don't keep their version of my FAQ up to date which makes for a lot of hassle in my mailbox. So if anyone sees this FAQ on any site other than those mentioned above, please let me know and I will take care of the situation, thanks. Just to make things crystal clear for some people, this FAQ is not to appear anywhere at the following URLs: http://www.cheatcc.com http://www.cheatindex.com This document Copyright 2004,2017 Daniel Engel =============================================================================== Popeye FAQ November 30, 2017 Daniel (DEngel) Engel dan.engel.2017 [AT] gmail [DOT] com ############################################################################### (A) TABLE OF CONTENTS ############################################################################### Table of Contents (A) This Table of Contents (B) Introduction (C) Controls (D) Enemies (E) Basics (F) Experimental ############################################################################### (B) INTRODUCTION ############################################################################### Popeye is as close as you can get to the arcade version of the same game, given the technology of the Odyssey^2. Which basically boils down to a single stage that you play until you die, and in the words of The Simpsons, "then try to BREAK that record!" However pretty much all games used to be like that, I don't think you'd see people running to check out the high score section in their favourite games magazines these days though. ;) ############################################################################### (C) CONTROLS ############################################################################### The controls for this game are as follows: Left/Right - Moves Popeye left or right. Up/Down - Climb the ladder, ride one of the elevators, or use stairs. Fire - Punch [to eat spinach, grab drowning hearts, or break Bluto's bottles]. ############################################################################### (D) ENEMIES ############################################################################### There is only the one enemy in the game [Bluto], but he's a big annoying one. Bluto can kill you by running into you, he can also jump up from the floor below and punch you. Bluto can lie down and grab you from the floor above as well. If all this is not enough Bluto can also through bottles at you from a distance. If you're fast though you can punch the bottles before they hit you. The bottom line is try to stay as far away from him as possible and you'll live longer! ############################################################################### (E) BASICS ############################################################################### Bricklayer J. Gastronomy Pictured below is the basic stage layout for the game: -------------------------------- | | O | 1| | |---- ---- ----| | | E| H | | | | ---- ---- | | | | P | | | |--------------------------| | | | + + B | | | | + + BBB | | | | + + BBB |E | | |--------------------------| | | |\ /\ /| | | S| \ / \ / | | |--------------------------------| |################################| |--------------------------------| | 0142->?????? 0153 | -------------------------------- 1 = Which life you are on (out of 3) O = Olive H = One of Olive's Hearts E = Elevator (2) P = Popeye (you) S = Spinach + = Ladder \ = Stairs # - Water Basically the two elevators move up and down continuously and you can use them at any time should you need to. Simply walk to the wall and hold up or down (whichever way you want to travel) and the elevator will take you that way as it passes. You can also climb down the ladder in the middle of the stage, but this can be slow at times so keep that in mind. The spinach at the bottom of the screen switches from the bottom left corner and the bottom right corner. Simply walk to whatever corner it's in and punch it to eat it. At this point Popeye turns red and his theme music starts playing. If you touch Bluto at this point you'll send him flying into the water below and out of your way for a few seconds. The numbers at the bottom screen from left to right indicate your best score and your current score. Otherwise your main source of points in the game are the hearts that Olive drops constantly. They slowly float down the stage until they're either caught by you or they land in the water at the bottom. Once a heart lands in the water you need to get down there FAST to collect it. You have a little bit of time to get down there but once it starts flashing and you hear a warning noise there's very little time left. If you still leave that heart then it drowns and Olive gets angry with you, which means you lose a life. Unlike the arcade version of the game you can use the spinach as much as you like, so I encourage you to do exactly that! As I said earlier there's only the one stage to the game, so you basically play until you've got a really high score or get bored. ############################################################################### (F) EXPERIMENTAL ############################################################################### For a little while now I've had a paypal link in all my FAQs at the very bottom here. Mainly as a small experiment since a few other FAQ authors have also had the same idea. I had a few people email me before I put this link in because they wanted to send money, so it's here for those people. For the record I've received about $87 (which works out to a bit more in Canadian lol) last I checked, so I've been getting cases of pop and making some excellent progress on a few FAQs. If you don't want to send money or can't then send me an email, it's nice to hear what people thought about my work and there's always room for improvement. My email address and paypal address for those that want to contribute are both dan.engel.2017 (AT) gmail (DOT) com Many thanks, and I hope you continue to use my work! ~Dan
