What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (4/28/09): The first, complete version of this FAQ. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= MiG 29 Soviet Fighter is an unlicensed rail shooter game for the NES. You play the role of a Soviet pilot who must stop the terrorist activity across six different missions. The game is relatively short, but you have a number of different types of weapons to use, as well as an overhead view for certain stages (as opposed to the typical back view). This game is your typical shooter with plenty of enemies to shoot at, and projectiles/objects to avoid. It goes deeper than other early games of the same genre, in that there are different things to do like refueling and landing, and not simply shooting and nothing more. At any rate, this is a fun and short game to check out if you are so interested. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Control Pad: Move your jet Start: Pause/resume game Select: Switch weapons A: Attack (hold to continuously fire) B: Switch weapons ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========== Game Modes ========== On the title screen, you can choose to play a 1-2 player game. If you choose to have two players, each player alternates in the main game (if P1 dies, P2 takes control), and the lives are shared between them. There are two control settings you can have: Arcade and Simulator controls. The only difference is that Up and Down are switched in each mode. In Arcade mode, you move upward if Up is pressed and downward with Down, where it is the opposite in Simulator mode (presumably to simulate "real-life" aircraft controls). ================= Refueling/Landing ================= Throughout the course of each mission, your fuel meter will slowly deplete. When it runs low, you will receive an onscreen Low Fuel notice. Shortly after that, you will ascend into the clouds to refuel with a cargo plane above. This is actually a mini-game of sorts, where a tube emerges on the center of your jet, and a swinging pendulum from the plane above. You need to connect your plane's tube to the round end of the pendulum and hold it in order to connect and start refueling. You have 30 seconds to do this; you gain more points for being quick. If you cannot refuel, you will die. At the end of each mission, you will be reminded to prepare for landing. At this point, the view switches to an overhead view, and a runway will come into your sights. You need to line up your plane with the runway (it does not need to be on the absolute center line), and lower the plane onto it safely. If you are turning when you touch the ground, or land somewhere other than the runway, you will lose a life, but the mission will be completed all the same. ======= Weapons ======= In this game, you will have four weapons at your disposal. You start off with the first weapon automatically, but you gain weapon upgrades (which you can switch between) by refueling, defeating boss enemies, and landing/completing the mission successfully. If you die, your upgrade loses a rank, so if you had three weapons, you will now have two. Weapon 1: Two straight shots Weapon 2: Rolling cluster shot Weapon 3: Three-way shot (straight and both diagonals) Weapon 4: Rolling cluster + straight shot (combination of Weapons 1 and 2) ======= Scoring ======= Action Points ------ ------ Refueling 50 * (seconds remaining on the clock) Defeat Boss 500 (you gain the points as you fight) End Stage 10 * (total enemies defeated) ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Walkthrough -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========= Mission 1 ========= For the first part of this mission, you will deal with groups of enemy planes approaching you from the distance (ahead of you), usually in groups of four. These groups will generally appear in a tight formation, though some may become spread across the screen as well. As they approach, they may launch missiles to attack, so steer clear of those to avoid certain death. There will be two waves of three planes which appear in the foreground above you, and will turn around to attack you head-on with missiles. Move downward to avoid crashing when they appear. Several more waves of enemy fighters will appear in the distance, ranging from three to six planes in each group. There will then be several waves of three jets flying in from the sides of the screen and approaching you from the front, all of which will shoot missiles, so be careful. After the Low Fuel warning, you will have to deal with a couple more waves of simple enemies before you fly upward to refuel. To refuel, you must carefully connect the round pendulum from the cargo plane above to the small antenna that emerges from your jet; the sooner you do this, the more points you receive. After refueling and receiving a weapon upgrade, you will be faced with a couple waves of regular planes. you will then have to deal with helicopters flying in from a distance; they fly in a circular pattern and shoot missiles, so hitting them may be difficult. The screen may also become cluttered with missiles, so be sure to move around the perimeter of the screen to avoid getting hit. Shortly afterward, you will get the Enemy Overhead notice, which means you will be facing a boss plane. This giant plane will fly overhead, much like the fuel plane previously. It will fly in place while dropping tiny bombs below. They may appear to be in the distance, but the bombs will kill you, so keep your eyes open and move to the sides to avoid dying. The main body of the plane is its weak spot, but you will need to get close enough to actually hit it with your firepower. Once you destroy the plane, you will receive a Bonus Life and weapon upgrade, and then retreat to the lower area. There are no enemies left to face, so you will receive the Prepare to Land notice shortly afterward. The camera will switch to an overhead view, and you will be able to move to the sides and up/down. As the runway comes into view, line yourself up and lower yourself to the ground so you can land successfully. With that complete, you will receive yet another weapon upgrade, and the first mission will be complete! ========= Mission 2 ========= The mission begins with some missiles being fired at you from below. Stay low since two waves of three planes will fly in from above/behind before turning to attack with more missiles. After that, you will go into Close Combat mode, which reverts back to the overhead view. You will have to deal with waves of enemy planes approaching from ahead; they will shoot at you and then turn off to the side. You will also have to fight the enemies on the ground, ranging from turrets to trucks and tanks below. Up ahead, you will meet a larger war plane which shoots in several directions and can take a lot of hits to destroy. Further along, a couple of enemy planes will fly in from behind/below, so watch out for them to avoid a collision. There will be plenty of ground units attacking you as well, and some of their shots can hit you from behind, so be careful! At the end of this segment, the camera will move behind you again. It will be raining, and you will deal with several waves of enemies coming at you ahead. Once you defeat them all, you will ascend to play the refueling game. After the refuel/upgrade, you will be faced with a constant wave of enemy planes in the distance. Avoid their fire and destroy them, and you will be directed to the boss with an Enemy Overhead notice. It is the same large plane from the first mission, but this time the bombs it drops can reach further to the sides. In addition, larger homing missiles will be shot out as well, so watch out for those. Once you defeat the boss plane, you will descend once again with an extra life as a reward. Now, you not only have to watch out for the missiles being fired from below, but you have to deal with enemies coming down from above you, as well as from the sides and straight ahead. There will be a lot of enemies and projectiles to get through, so keep moving and destroying the planes, and you will get through here. You will receive a notice that the Terror Vulture is in sight, and you will go into Ultra Close Combat mode (basically the same as Close Combat mode, but a crosshair box will appear on the screen). Soon after entering this mode, you will spot the Terror Vulture, which is a gray jet ahead of you. Get it into your crosshairs and keep it there for a couple of seconds, and you will auto-fire, destroying it. Watch out for the turret fire below though! Following the Terror Vulture's demise, you will speed up and have to get past more enemies firing at you from below. After this short section, stay towards the center of the screen and stay in the air since you will then prepare to land. Go down on the runway and the mission will be a success! ========= Mission 3 ========= For the third mission, you will be starting off over water as a change of pace. Stay high above the water to avoid the missile fire from below, then be prepared to fight a bunch of helicopters up ahead. After dealing with quite a few helicopters and their annoying circular movements, you will meet waves of regular planes flying towards you. There will also be plenty of projectiles coming from below, so you need to pay attention to avoid an unexpected death. You will then meet with an enemy overhead, which is another large plane. It drops those tiny bombs which will kill you upon impact, and lots of them, so be on the lookout when attacking. A good idea would be to attack in short spurts, alternating between moving to the sides to avoid the falling bombs. After you destroy this enemy, you will gain an extra life and the weapon upgrade as usual. Stay high above as soon as you descend, as there will be more missiles coming from below. There will be another wave of regular enemies coming towards you, so defeat them easily. After that, move downward as there will be several waves of enemies flying downward from above, so you don't want to crash into them. Following that wave, there will be more helicopters to deal with, as well as the missiles from below. Once you pass that point, there will be another bunch of regular planes straight ahead. Next, you will get the Low Fuel notice, and thus ascend to the cargo plane. Upon completion, you will descend to the water level once more. Avoid the missiles from below and defeat some more helicopters as they approach in the distance. Beyond that, you will go into Close Combat mode with the overhead view again. There will be the usual small planes attacking you, but you will soon run into three larger jets which shoot in random directions and can take quite a beating. There will also be the turrets and tanks on the ground shooting at you, as well as planes approaching from behind, so watch out! Once you get past the land portion, you will come upon a battleship, complete with many more turrets firing upon you. Destroy those while killing the helicopters and planes flying around the area. There is a tower on the center of the ship which you must destroy, or else you will loop around and have to pass the ship again. Once you fully destroy the ship, you will be able to continue onward. You will then prepare to land, so land on the runway and the third mission will be complete! ========= Mission 4 ========= Out here in the snow-covered landscape, you will once again have to steer clear of missiles coming from below. There will be a wave of regular planes coming at you, followed by several bunches of planes flying in directly above you (move downward to avoid them). There will then be several helicopters to destroy, followed by a few more waves of regular planes. After that, you will have to deal with an onslaught of planes AND helicopters coming at you together. Following a couple more waves of planes, you will get the usual notice that it is time to refuel. Once you complete that task, there will be another normal wave of planes coming at you. Stay below and you will face two waves of three planes swooping in from above, followed by two waves of four planes dropping in. Watch out for the renewed fire from below as well. When you get past this point, you will go into Close Combat mode. In this next segment, you will have to face a lot of turret/tank fire from below. There will be a number of helicopters flying around to deal with, as well as a handful of planes. Once you get beyond the land portion, you will meet a much larger helicopter which acts as the boss of this mission. It will constantly shoot projectiles in random directions while moving around the screen. When the helicopter moves downward, stay to the sides while evading the constant fire. Once there is an opening below, let loose with your own firepower, moving away as needed, until you win. After the boss fight, you will be cleared for landing. Straighten out and line up in the center of the screen, and land on the runway to complete the fourth mission! ========= Mission 5 ========= As the introduction states, you will start off above the ocean yet again, with Antarctica on the horizon. There will be missiles flying at you from below, and several waves of planes will appear to fight you head-on. Destroy them and you will then be faced with a mix of helicopters and planes to fight. Of course that will mean there are plenty of projectiles to dodge, so keep moving and pay attention to your surroundings to survive it. There will be another couple of waves of planes coming at you, and then you will ascend to fight an enemy overhead. The boss this time is another large plane, with tiny bombs and homing missiles at its disposal. Move back and forth, attacking the main body in short spurts, and you will destroy it easily. After claiming your extra life and upgrade, descend and avoid the missiles below. There will be several waves of four planes coming at you up ahead; they are in tight formations so you can easily kill them. There will be a few helicopters entering into the mix shortly afterward, and then some more planes. Soon after, you will get the Low Fuel notice and thus it is time to refuel. Following the refueling segment, evade the missiles as you defeat the helicopters up ahead. Beyond them, you will go into another Close Combat mode. You will face a number of small and large planes as you travel above the icy ground below. Watch out for the blue jets which will fly in from behind to attack. Further ahead, you will come upon the enemy's plant. There will be plenty of turrets scattered around below, as well as helicopters flying around, so be ready to destroy them. There will be a large red area in the middle of the plant; this is your main target. If you cannot destroy it the first time through, you will loop around to try again. Once you destroy the plant's tower, you will be able to proceed onward where you can prepare to land. Line up with the runway as usual and land on it to complete the mission! ========= Mission 6 ========= For the final mission, you are in what appears to be a desert setting (quite a leap from Antarctica, I'd say). There will be a lot more projectile fire from the ground, so you will have plenty to watch out for here. There will be many waves of planes coming at you from the distance, as well as groups of planes swooping in from above. It may actually be safer to dodge the missiles from below rather than killing every single enemy you meet, but it's up to you really. Once you get the Low Fuel notice, you will have to deal with two more waves of planes coming towards you. Once you defeat them, you will ascend into the clouds to refuel yet again. After you finish refueling, you will face a couple of waves of planes in the distances. There will then be a number of helicopters appearing to attack you with their missiles. The screen can get quite cluttered with all of these projectiles, so be very cautious when maneuvering around here. After you get past the helicopter area, you will be met with another wave of planes appearing over the horizon. Once that is done, you will get a notice that Colonel Crackov is overhead, and thus will ascend to meet him. The boss battle here is nothing out of the ordinary, so treat it like you would any of those previous large plane battles. Watch out for the homing missiles and the high amount of tiny bombs being dropped, attacking whenever you have an opening. Once you destroy the boss plane, a nuclear missile will be launched, targeting Moscow. Your next goal is to catch up to the missile and destroy it before it's too late! You will receive an extra life and weapon upgrade before descending once more. As soon as you are down below, the camera will switch to the overhead view. In this Ultra Close Combat mode, you will have to lock on to the nuclear missile with your crosshair box and hold onto it so your auto-fire kicks in. Once the missile is destroyed, you will then have to escape the area. Destroy the turrets and other ground fire as you continue along the path. There will be a LOT of things shooting at you, so this final corridor may be difficult to get through. Stay towards the center area so you have the most room to move and attack the turrets along the way. Once you reach the end, line up with the runway one last time and land safely to complete the mission. Upon completion of the mission, you will get a Game Over screen, strangely enough. Press Start again and a congratulatory screen will appear to show that you have completed this game! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 6.
