Version 1.05: January 17th, 2018 Rewrote some parts of the gameplay section to (try to) make them sound less confusing, as well as to add more info. Other minor changes and corrections. Version 1.1: January 20th, 2018 More gameplay section changes, more miscellany. Version 1.13: January 24th, 2018 Added a note about Bokbok's and John's spin attacks that I forgot the first time around. Also added a copyright message. (Minor correction on February 3rd, 2018) Caught a mistake in Dachon's section. His Wild Dash is performed with A, not B. Version 1.3: March 19th, 2018 Some more technical info and a few other minor changes. Version 1.7: September 10th, 2018 Returning to this after half a year. A new gameplay summary, cutting down on redundancy here and there, moving bits of info around, and quite a bit more. Version 1.73: December 20th, 2018 After checking this again, I noticed that I was using both "Ba" and "Bk" for Back; it's been standardized to the latter. Likewise, the basic move names have been changed to what you see in the actual game. (I've been tinkering with this a lot. It's a learning process, I guess. Oh, and here's to Skapon's cameo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Seeing this game get any kind of attention is a surprise.) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C1 Introduction ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Joy Mech Fight is an obscure fighting game released for the Famicom in May 1993. It was developed by Nintendo and has a cast of robots made up of floating body parts, allowing for smoother animation than in most 8-bit games. The game's story, as laid out in 1P War (more on that later), centers on two scientists named Dr. Little Ermin and Dr. Ivan Warner. The two spend their time building robots until, one day, Dr. Warner suddenly absconds with several of them and announces his intentions to take over the world. In response, Dr. Ermin dusts off the comedian robot Skapon and reprograms him for battle, thus kicking off the events of the game. (Note: The scientists are also known as Dr. Little Emon and Dr. Ivan Walnuts in some sources, but I'm going by the fan translation here.) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C2 Controls and Notation ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +-----------------------------------------------+ | +-------------+ | | | I | | | | | | | | | | | | -- | | | | | | +-----------------------------+ | | | -- -- B A | | | | | | SEL STA --- --- | | | | -- -- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | -- --- --- | | | +-------------------------------------------+ | +-----------------------------------------------+ Menus: Arrows Move cursor A Confirm selection B Cancel selection, return to previous menu Start Confirm selection Select Change pages on Vs. mode select (1P only) In-Game: Fw Forward Bk Back Dn Down U Up (Jump) B B button (Kick) A A button (Punch) Start Pause , Then + Press together (x) Hold x (roughly one second) (x) y Press y while holding x (x), y Hold and release x, then press y Mash Press repeatedly ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C3 Gameplay Basics ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Joy Mech Fight is a somewhat traditional 1-on-1 fighting game. As always, you have to wear down your opponent's health bar with your character's attacks while making sure that your own health doesn't run out. Every character can walk back and forth, jump, and perform various damaging attacks. There's no way to crouch, though. In addition, none of the stages have walls; they can scroll forever in either direction. Instead of using a "round" system, the game starts both fighters off with three lives, each with 88Pow worth of life. Once a character's health bar is drained, the match will pause as they move onto their next life. The victor will return to their corner and be rewarded with 16Pow before the battle resumes. Note that fighters take slightly less damage than usual as their health decreases. This starts becoming noticeable around 50Pow. There is also no timer of any kind, so depleting all three of the opponent's lives is the only way to win a match. In the very rare event that both fighters lose their last lives at the same time, the game will simply restart the match. ~~~~~~~~~ Collision ~~~~~~~~~ In regards to basic attacks, you can take damage by touching the attacking limb at any point in the animation, even as it goes back to the opponent's body. This appears to apply to most special moves as well. "Multi-Hit" moves are just that: they can hit an opponent multiple times in one use, whether they're blocking or not. "Scratch" moves have this effect on a blocking opponent, but knock them away on a clean hit. All other attacks can only hit the opponent once each time they are used. ~~~~~ Stuns ~~~~~ Sometimes, if a fighter takes too many hits in a row, their head will fall off, and they will pause to replace it. During this time, they cannot do anything, and the enemy can damage them partway through the animation (when the recovery sound starts). It's possible to mash the buttons to try to recover faster, though it can be very hard to do so quickly enough to avoid getting hit. As an aside, every fighter's stun animation is the same as their animation for recovering after losing a life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Special Moves ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Each character has at least four (sort of; Hover and Star really only have three). Some moves have hidden variants not mentioned in the in-game guide; these are marked with asterisks below. The commands are generally simpler than the norm, with a lot of "hold direction" and "press multiple button" moves. As usual, hitting a blocking opponent with a special move will still incur a small amount of chip damage. Note that B+A moves are most easily performed by quickly tapping both buttons together. Holding them for longer usually won't work. When using a move with D-pad directions, you have to hold the last direction while pressing the button. Also, not all of the motions have to be exact: *"Direction+button": You can hold the direction as long as you want before pressing the button. (i.e. Bokbok's HurricanBok, Hover's Hover Slide) *"(Direction) Button": Similar to the above. As noted in the controls, you must hold the direction for around a second first. (i.e. Tiger's Flying Kick, most projectiles) *"Multiple directions+button": You can hold the last direction, but the game will "forget" it after a second or so. (i.e. Flame's Fire Ball, Shenlong's Fire Breath) *"(Direction), different direction+button": You have to press the button right after the last direction. (i.e. Giant's Dash, Skapon's Skapon Roll) Projectiles are generally used with "hold Dn+button" motions. You can hold Bk or Fw while launching one to influence the speed. Additionally, projectiles do not clash and cancel out, as is usually the case. Instead, they simply pass right through each other. (On that note, the in-game guide claims that pressing A just as Flame's or Blaze's Waves hit the opponent increases the damage, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Huh.) The game also counts throws as special moves. Every character except for Zak, Old, Skater, Hover, and Star has at least one. Throws cannot be blocked, countered, or otherwise escaped from. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C4 Modes ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ~~~~~~ 1P War ~~~~~~ This is the "story mode" of the game. In the first stage, you start with only Skapon and have to defeat the other seven main fighters, who can be fought in any order. Once you defeat each one, Dr. Ermin will fly in and reprogram it, adding it to your roster. (Note that the eight main fighters are immediately playable in the versus modes.) After all seven of the robots are recovered, Dr. Warner will summon Dachon, the first boss, to challenge you. After he is defeated, you will move on to the next stage, again consisting of eight normal robots and a boss, and so on for the next stage until the campaign is completed. You cannot play as any robots past the initial eight in this mode. Finishing the first stage of Normal mode unlocks Hard mode, which can be found by returning to the main menu and selecting 1P War again. This mode starts you off on the second stage. There is no reward for finishing Normal mode completely, however. Finishing Hard mode unlocks the 24 "normal" fighters from stages 2, 3, and 4 for the versus modes. This also unlocks Special mode, which is even more difficult, and also has the opponents using their 1P colors instead of their 2P colors. Like with Hard, you begin Special on stage 2. Finally, finishing Special mode unlocks the four bosses for the versus modes. After you finish a difficulty, you can re-select it from the main menu and replay stages 2, 3, and 4 in any order. Defeated opponents in a stage will stay defeated until you defeat the boss, which resets that stage. Finally, note that the game automatically saves your progress. Losing a match brings up a choice of Continue or Quit. Selecting Continue returns you to the enemy select screen, while Quit merely takes you back to the introduction with your file intact. As such, this choice is basically meaningless. ~~~~~~~~~~ 1P vs. COM ~~~~~~~~~~ Lets you play a match against the computer. ~~~~~~~~~ 1P vs. 2P ~~~~~~~~~ Lets you play a match against another player. Note that only player 1's controller can be used to change pages with Select. ~~~~~~~~~~~ COM vs. COM ~~~~~~~~~~~ Lets you select two fighters and watch them fight. After a match in any of the versus modes, the game will return to the player select screen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Training Mode ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Upon choosing a fighter in 1P War or 1P vs. COM, you are given a choice of "Start" or "Manual". The former confirms your fighter, while the latter opens the game's training mode. Here, your options are: Demo: Allows you to see how your fighter's moves are performed. Highlight one and press A to view its demo. Test: Lets you practice moving and attacking with your fighter. Whenever you use an attack, the game lists its name and damage at the bottom of the screen. The training dummy is always Zak, and he can be controlled with the second pad. End: Returns you to the player select screen. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C5 Basic Controls ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The things that every fighter can do. ------------------------------------ C5.1 Movement Controls ------------------------------------ Walk Bk or Fw Block Hold Dn at any time or hold Bk when enemy attacks *You can only block attacks while on the ground. The first option is music, and the second and third are different banks of sound effects. The fourth option lets you erase the cartridge's memory, and the last option returns you to the title screen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Random Select ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the main menu, highlight any of the versus modes and hold B+A+Select+Start to have the game randomly choose both fighters. Note that the game can select fighters that you haven't yet unlocked. Once the match is finished, another randomized match will automatically be loaded. Thus, the only way out is to reset the game. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C8 Credits and Thanks ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Nintendo: Creators and publishers of this quirky, yet entertaining fighting game. AlanMidas: Creator of the fan translation. Pretty much all of the in-game text was taken from it. (I do realize there are a few liberties and mistakes, but I decided to stay consistent to make things a little easier.) Achilleus_14: Author of a Japanese guide for the game that explains quite a lot, including the special move variations. It was used as a reference for some of the stuff in this guide. See it here: http://www.geocities.jp/achilleus_14/joy0.html GameFAQs: A website for game guides. It gave me a place to post this, and is also where I got the information for the cheats. GameHacking.org: A site with external cheats that helped me figure out most of the technical data (i.e. health bar sizes). Yours truly: The person who wrote this FAQ. It took around a month to play through the game and write the initial version, with the handful of revisions on top of that, but I'm sure I'm getting the hang of it.
