Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ganbare Pennant Race! is a baseball game produced by Konami for the Famicom. It plays like most other baseball games of the era, but with its own added features. For instance, you can choose the angle you swing your bat which can affect where the ball is hit. There is a rudimentary trade feature in Pennant Race (season) Mode, complete with your team earning money to increase the value of the players after each game you win. There are 12 regular teams to choose from, while in Open (exhibition) mode you have access to two special, more powerful teams with their own fun themes. There is also an All-Star Mode with its own team to select, so there are a lot of options to choose from. The gameplay can feel slow in some areas, but if you enjoy 8-bit baseball titles, this one will probably not disappoint. ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========== Game Modes ========== When you first start the game, there are five options you can pick. They are: Open Mode: Play a single regular game against the computer or another human. Pennant Mode: Start or continue a season (password required). If you are just starting, you choose the team you want to play as, as well as the length of the season. Read below for more details. Exciting Mode: Enter passwords for both human players, and you can play games against particular teams, view endings for each team, etc. I am actually not 100% sure what this feature's true purpose is; if you do, let me know! All Star Mode: Play a game where you can choose your roster from the best players, or play as the exclusive Old Star team against one of the other leagues. Watch Mode: You simply watch the computer play a game. You have no interaction with anything here. After choosing a mode (with the exception of continuing in Pennant Mode or selecting Watch Mode), you will go to a team selection screen. Choose your team and then you choose from three stadiums. Use left/right to toggle between a day or night game. The final screen is your lineup screen, where you can substitute out players or changing their positions by pressing B. Press A to start the game. ============ Pennant Mode ============ When you start up a season in Pennant Mode, there will be a few new options available to you. Starting off, when you choose your team, you get to choose the length of the season in terms of how many times you face the other teams in your league. You can play 60 games (play the other teams 12x), up to 130 games (face each team 26x). Once the season is complete, if you are the top team in the league, you go on to the Japan Series. Win four of seven games to win the championship and watch the credits! Anyway, following each game, you will see a news report showing how the other teams in the league performed that day, as well as the overall standings. You will then go to the password screen, where three options will be available (you can not use Trade or Annual Salary in the Japan Series): Next Game (ねくすと　げーむ) Trade (とれーど) Annual Salary (ねんぽう) If you select Trade, you can choose another team and see a selection of four players, as well as four of your own available for trade. Choose the player you want, then the player you want to lose, and you will see their price. If you don't have the money, you can't make the trade. Early in the season you simply won't have enough cash. The better the opposing player's stats and the greater the difference between the players, the higher the cost will be. You receive extra money each time you win a game, but you lose some by losing games. You can lose the season by running out of money to fund the team, so be careful! On the Annual Salary screen, you will see a list of your players, with bars next to their names. If you win a game, you will receive two units that you can disperse to anyone on the team (press A to use, B to take back). This seems to increase the overall expenses of the team, as noted by the value on the bottom of the screen (次の試合費用). The total cash you have on hand is in the middle of the top bar, and is essential when making trades. ======= Timeout ======= If you press Start during the game, you can call Time by pressing Start. Depending on if you are on offense or defense, you will have different options: Batting ------- Pinch Hitter (だいだ): Swap out current batter. Pinch Runner (だいそう): Swap a current runner on base. Switch (すいっち): Switch sides of the plate while at bat. Pitching -------- Relief (りりいふ): Swap out current pitcher. Defense (しゅび): Shift your defensive alignment: Advance (ぜんしん) Alternate (こうたい) Right Shift (みぎしふと) Left Shift (ひだりしふと) ======== Fighting ======== Under certain circumstances, a fight can occur during the game. It involves the batter being hit by a pitch (dead ball), but there are other requirements most likely, such as having two outs, bases loaded, being the fifth inning or later, etc. When a fight is about to happen, the camera will zoom out above the field with the batter still standing at home plate. A side-scrolling fight scene will then begin. Press A to punch, and B to kick. The player who gets knocked out will need to be replaced immediately. It's a fun way to get rid of the other team's pitcher or eliminate a particularly tough batter! ****************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Secrets/Tips and Tricks -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ============================================= All Star Mode: Keep Selecting the Same Player ============================================= On the team selection screen for All Star Mode, point at either Cent or Penny League (this will not work for Old Star) and hold B, then press A to select. If done correctly, you will be able to choose the same player for multiple spots in your roster. ================ Sound Check Mode ================ In Pennant Race Mode, enter "S" as your password to enter Sound Check mode. Press Up/Down to cycle the different sounds, B to play it, and A to stop. ====================== View Any Team's Ending ====================== In Exciting Mode, enter one of the passwords listed below for Player 1. For Player 2, enter the following: ふらの. If done successfully, you will go to the Japan Series victory screen for the chosen team.
