Just a plain FAQ skeleton. ____________ --------/|| ABOUT J.J. ||\---------------------------------------[ABT]--------- J.J. or Jumping Jack is a very different game in many concepts. It was released in 1987, time when we had ultra low-tech games being produced yet. To its time, J.J. had a nice new feature: a 3D scrolling playing screen that reminds the Mode 7 Chipset used by SNES in games like Mario Kart and Street Racers. Its gameplay is totally innovative. I've never seen a game like this in all years I know and play videogames. Your main objective is to RUN, run like crazy, avoiding enemies and obstacles, just to come to the end of the stage and fight a big flying snake-like monster using a jetpack. I can't deny that it seems a bit stupid at first, but JJ can make up for a good weekend challenge. By the way, it's a tough challenge that will require rapid reflexes and quick action. Be ready to lose a lot of lives as you get to know the game mechanics. So, if you like jogging with mindless fun, you'll have it in JJ. :) __________ --------/|| CONTROLS ||\-----------------------------------------[CTL]--------- D-Pad - In running scenes, you can use only Left and Right to move in that direction. On boss fights, you can move freely to all directions (cause you fly). A Button - Makes JJ jump. You can press it further to have higher jumps. B Button - On boss fights, shoots a fireball towards the enemy. On normal stages, you can't use it until you acquire the Pistol (see [ITM]), and it lets you shoot fireballs too (this make the trip a lot easier than just evading like I crazingly did). Start - Pauses the game. Select - Now this is strange. It makes the screen cross with another image of it, causing an unpleasant (and useless) view. I don't know why this happens. If you know anything about it, please e-mail me so I can update. _______ --------/|| ITEMS ||\--------------------------------------------[ITM]--------- You can find only two kinds of items on your jumping quest. There are more, but they are hidden inside pillars. Tank - The tank looks like a small rectangular orange packet. It appears on the stage floor, but can be floating at mid or high-air. You just need to touch it to get it. It only rewards you points, and only if you can reach the last stage of the world you're currently in without losing a life. If you die, you lose all tanks you've collected so far. There is a tank counter in the bottom-right at the game screen. Jetpack - A gray, double jetpack. You'll find one in each world, in a pre- defined location. When you touch it, you go to a bonus stage that can vary from world to world, full of free tanks to be grabbed. ;) Time Counter - Not really an item, but it's important on the later levels. On the first ones, you shouldn't bother about losing time, cause they're really quick (except world 2 that can get a bit problematic). It marks time on a bar filled with squares that disappear ocasionally. Pillars - Pillars are like gray or blue turrets which you can hit yourself on them to get an item. There are 6 items you can get by doing that: 1 - Extra life. It is a small blue guy. 2 - Shield Boots. A pair of boots which grants you invulnerability to hit a enemy. When you do it, the shield disappears. 3 - Invulnerability. Sort of a white man symbol that makes you invulnerable for some seconds. JJ flashes while that. 4 - Clock. This puts the Time Counter at the beginning. 5 - Pistol. A blue pistol, lets you use the B button to shoot fireballs in the normal stages. 6 - The Eye. A blue eye, that gives you immediate death if touched. PS: You lose Shield and Pistol when you touch an enemy. _____________ -------/|| WALKTHROUGH ||\---------------------------------------[WLK]--------- Just a reminder: the game seems to be random, but it isn't. It has defined locations for all enemies and items. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [WORLD 1 - EYES WORLD] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- In this world you'll see how crazy this game is. It's a purple and blue landscape, full of demonic eyes. :o Your enemies will be the rolling Eyes and Fireballs, and you'll have turrets and fire-eyed turrets as obstacles. Beware! -(STAGE 1)- Simple. The eyes move a bit, and you'll see few turrets and fireballs. At the stage end, jump over the gap. -(STAGE 2)- Now you'll find your first tanks. The jetpack can also be found on this stage, at right of the initial screen. Don't forget jumping the final gap. -(STAGE 3)- The eyes get fiercer and quicker, and the amount of fire-eyed turrets will increase. Beware with the final gap, again. -(STAGE 4)- Lots of quick eyes and fire turrets. Don't forget the gap. ;) -(BOSS)- The boss is quite easy. It's a flying green worm that you must destroy shooting fireballs on it. You can hit its body, taking each part of it by part, or shoot the head and finish it much quicker. It isn't difficult. Just get sure to not be in front of him when he advances toward you. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [WORLD 2 - ICE WORLD] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The Ice World has the turrets and eyes from the last world, but gives two new nasty additions: Skeletons and Bricks. The Skeletons act much like Eyes, but they are even quicker. The Bricks will not kill you, just make you stop running until you get rid of them. To do it, run left or right until they give up hugging JJ. There are Flying Bricks too, who'll jump as you do (NASTY!). There are new turrets, too, sort of eletric kind ones. They can grow high, so even your higher jumps can't overpass them sometimes. -(STAGE 1)- There are a lot of gaps from the start. Time your jumps to fall and have time to press the jump button again. Otherwise, you'll do no good. -(STAGE 2)- The enemies increase, and now the Eyes can follow you even after you passed by them, so jump quickly when it happens. Beware of the gaps. Bricks and Flying Bricks appear here and get SO annoying for the first-time gamer. Just run left and right until they let you free. Also, the bonus jetpack is here. -(STAGE 3)- The eletric turrets will grow higher and will appear even on the gaps borders. Be ready to avoid them as you fall from a jump. -(BOSS)- This boss is exactly like the last one, plus you have to fight it twice. Just shoot at his head and finish him in 15-20 seconds. Oh, and it is a metal snake. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [WORLD 3 - COIL WORLD] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The Coil World got this name cause it's full of coils. You MUST use them to jump over the enormous gaps. It seems pretty difficult at the beginning, but it has a trick on doing it finely: step onto the coil, then DON'T MOVE or TOUCH any buttons. You land precisely on the next coil. The only exception to this rule is on Stage 4, where you'll have to do a little turn to the right to reach the next coil. In terms of new enemies, we have Octobots who act like Skeletons and Eyes, but in mid-air. This world isn't as difficult as world 2, since you get the coil mechanics. -(STAGE 1)- There is a huge series of coils which you have to jump in. Just stick to one first, then let yourself fall on the subsequent ones. By the end, you'll find some tanks high-air, so jump to get them. -(STAGE 2)- Face new pink turrets and get ready to any coils that appear. Right at the level star, you'll have to go on a single coil that sits on the gap border. This way you can proceed. Also, be quick to avoid the pink turrets while you fall to the next border. -(STAGE 3)- Major surprising gaps at the start point. After it, you'll see a lot of jetpacks. Grab one and go to the bonus stage, then come back to avoid the Octobots. Some can even fly over the gaps, so caution with your jumps. -(STAGE 4)- The 4th stage has a little problem. You'll eventually find a coil that will send you over the gap, but: First, it seems that a pink turret will get you while you jump. DON'T MOVE, it's just a visual threat. You'll fall safely on another coil. Second, after this another coil, you must move right in order to find a new coil, cause there's no one on the path you were. This can be kinda tricky to do, but you'll get it. Third, you'll probably have the same visual threat with the next turrets after the last coil. Don't fall for it. -(BOSS)- Same as the other, you have to hit it on the head to a quicker kill. And you have to kill it twice, too. It's just another snakey boss with different colors. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [WORLD 4 - ROCK WORLD] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The abominable Eyes are here again, and have a new friend: the Array, who slides and do a small jump to confuse you. This is a very difficult world, specially because we also have the Bricks back. -(STAGE 1)- Lots of Arrays will try to threat you, but don't mind. Ignore them most of the time, cause they won't jump on you if you just go north without turning. Now be extra cautious with Bricks, cause they appear even on gaps (and that can be VERY frustating). -(STAGE 2)- The bonus jetpack is given freely at this level start. Everything goes well, except for the increase of Eyes and Arrays, and some gaps filled with Bricks. -(STAGE 3)- This level IS frustrating. The Bricks on the gaps will almost make you pull all your hair. There is a safe route you can follow, and I'll add it here soon, so you just don't need to lose all your lives. -(STAGE 4)- Gaps, Flying Bricks, Eyes and turrets on the gaps borders. Total HELL. :( Same as above, I'll plan a safe route soon. -(BOSS)- Another snakey friend, but this time you have to kill THREE of them. Crazy already? If not, then... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [WORLD 5 - EVIL WORLD] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Welcome to the Evil World. The Eyes had a lesson with Arrays and now know how to jump, but it's better than have them sliding to you. You'll have Bricks too, but now Meteorites will pose as Bricks just to kill you. Jump ANYTHING that looks like a Brick. XD And still we have a new fiend to face: PoliEyes. It looks like 3 Eyes merged together, and slide through the screen. When they spot you, JUMP, cause they'll advance towards your direction. -(STAGE 1)- The Eyes won't bother much. There are some tricky gaps to jump, alterning between small and long jumps. The jetpack bonus is given freely here, too. -(STAGE 2)- Bricks, turrets, PoliEyes, Meteorites...There is a HUGE gap too, which you'll have to use your maximum strength to jump. -(STAGE 3)- To your terror and fear, the Eyes get to slide again. :( Gaps again, and lots of surprise attacks from the PoliEyes. -(BOSS)- Devil Snakey! This Boss is incredibly quick, so beware. And you have to face FOUR of them. Well, if you aren't crazy yet... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [WORLD 6 - ALIEN WORLD] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- In the Alien World you'll find the new Alien Babies, which are flying creatures that float in high-air and sometimes advance towards you. -(STAGE 1)- Baby aliens will float over the gaps and the ultra-annoying Eyes will come back with their slide & follow move, along with hopping Eyes. The Babies are easy to avoid. -(STAGE 2)- Time your jumps with the gaps, avoiding everything that gets on your way, EVEN tanks. Most of them are there only to lure you to obstacles. Don't fall for it. The Babies will fill the screen here, so be quick. The bonus jetpack is here. -(STAGE 3)- The Super Coils here will send you higher than ever. This is a short stage. -(STAGE 4)- Eyes will follow you so MUCH. Jump like a Jump'in Jack! This is REALLY hard. I promise giving you a safe route as soon as I find it. -(BOSS)- Now we have a snake formed by green scary heads! This guy is FAST and very resistent. You have to kill 4 of them. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [WORLD 7 - DIMENSIONAL] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The Dimensional World has some new enemies, but they won't attack differently than the others we had seen until now. Focus yourself on evading the new fire turrets that are even in gaps. -(STAGE 1)- Be quick to jump the series of small gaps and lastly take a good breath to another ultra-high jump. Monsters will not be so annoying this far, so focus your attention on the turrets. -(STAGE 2)- THe bonus jetpack is given freely here. This stage is pretty easy. The Alien Babies flying and lil robots sliding won't be a problem. No gaps, too. -(STAGE 3)- Whoa, another bonus jetpack for you here. At first you'll go through a lot of turrets, then a series of quick-jump gaps filled with enemies, then a huge gap. It's not that hard. Note: I found a glitch on this stage. When you had to jump the huge gap, you should use the Super Coil before it. If you don't, you can still make a huge jump by yourself and meet the boss area before falling in the hole. I mean, don't fear dying in this last gap, just give it a big jump. -(BOSS)- Now this is hard. The pink snakey boss has great speed and resistance. This resistance will trouble you, cause the time counter will go on flowing. So shoot its head as long as you can. You have to kill 4 of them, yeah... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [WORLD 8 - CYBER WORLD] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= It's all about turrets. I mean, LOTS of them. This is the final world, for your mind sake. -(STAGE 1)- Avoid all turrets. Sometimes they come in pairs too, and try to lead you to a trap of two turrets blocking your path. There are series of quick gap jumps, and at one you'll find flywing Bricks along with turrets. Pray and evade them. The jetpack is here, too, but hidden behind a turret. -(STAGE 2)- Pratically same technique as above. There is a blue pillar which will give you an extra life, but don't hit it, or you'll cause an unexpected glitch that will freeze everything. -(FINAL BOSS)- Already? Yeah, just two stages to make you happy, cause what you have to face now is your worst nightmare. The final snakey boss is black; so it blends with the background. It's ultra fast and almost invunerable. Hit his head, guiding yourself by his shadow on the floor. After some time he'll change colors and make things a bit easier. Again, be quick as time counts against you. And...uh...you have to kill 6 of them. XXX CONGRATS!! YOU BEAT THE GAME XXX Now give yourself a big pat on your back and book a consult with Dr.Psychiatrist, cause you'll need it. The ending is kinda crappy, but it revealed a Cheat Code. All snakey bosses come to tell you of it, one at one. IT IS: Press B 4 times, hold left & up, then Start. If anybody knows how to use this, tell me in prof.jotajota@gmail.com. I've never seen any records of this game on the Internet other than in GameFaqs, so I must think I'm he first person to discover this code (and maybe finishing the game? O.o) --------/||TIPS, NOT TRICKS||\-----------------------------------[TPN]--------- [1] - Sometimes playing with sound muted can help your concentration. The rapid, loud music and jump gfx can bother you when you're trying to evade the damned Eyes. [2] - PAUSE TRICK. This is cheap, but you can pause the game whenever you want, so you can think about your next step carefully. You can use this on EVERY step! Maybe the pausing was intentional, cause when you do it, J.J. goes into a thinking stance. [3] - When fighting bosses, let them advance first then attack when they go to the back. It's much easier than trying confront them face-to-face. [4] - The Bonus stages can be really relaxing for your tension and "jogging stress". Make use of those few seconds of sanity whenever you can. [5] - You get an extra life at each 100.000 points, so try grabbing some tanks along the way. There are some stages which have lots of them; some have none. [6] - Don't go around jumping like a frog. This game requires some strategy, and that involves jumping only at strategic places and times. If you use jump unnacordingly, you may find yourself falling on an enemy. --------/|| CONTACTING ME||\-------------------------------------[CNT]--------- Contacting me, Prof.JotaJota, is rather easy.
