Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1999 Hore, Mitakotoka! Seikimatsu is a Japanese board game for the Famicom. It plays much like the real-life board game of the Game of Life, in that you compete against other players to make the most money and gain the most power before the end of the game. You can gain/lose power and money based on your actions and the risks you take during the many events that occur along the way. Of course, some ventures are more risky than others, so you will need to plan ahead. You can also set traps to hinder your opponent's progress. The game itself has a strange premise: aliens are coming and you have to get yourself into the best financial/physical position before the year 1999 (the game starts in 1995). It is an interesting concept albeit a little heavy on text if you want to understand everything that's going on. Aside from that, it is easy to understand and play if you are interested in killing time for a while, so check it out! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ======== Gameplay ======== When you first start the game, you will first be asked how many human players there are (1-4). After that, you can enter your name (up to four Kana characters). Once you finish that, you will go to a screen where you can randomly select the top and bottom half of your character's face, followed by picking a random occupation. The occupation you are given determines how much money you start off the game with (the differences are only within 5-10,000 Yen so it's not really a big deal). Once the human players have been selected, the same process automatically fills in the computer players, and then the game begins. On the game board itself, everyone starts off in front of the Bank at the bottom of the map. Movement is in a clockwise-oriented path, and the objective is to get back to the Bank first. When it is your turn, you have three options available on the menu screen in the bottom-right corner: Card (カード) Map (マップ) Data (データ) The Map option allows you to move the camera to look at the rest of the map before you pick a card. The Data section lets you look at the four players and their statistics (money, insurance, power, special items if any). Finally, the Card option is the most important. It is like rolling dice; six face-down cards will appear and you can pick any one card you want. The number that appears on the card is the amount of spaces you can move your car. Sometimes you will receive a trap which can be used after you complete your movement and the event on the space where you land. After every few rounds of play, a news update will appear on the screen. I cannot really understand what is said, but it is not all that relevant to the game itself. After you complete one go-around on the board, Gold Alien Spaces will randomly appear on the board, replacing certain other Spaces (usually Work/? Spaces). At some point, you may also be able to obtain a Peso Pendant, which can also benefit your character in some way later on. Also, each time you go around the board, time will pass much as it does while traveling on the board normally. However, getting back to the Bank advances the story a bit further. As you progress from 1995 to the end of 1999, the board itself will change, revealing different spaces (desert/ice spaces), and the landscape itself will become more battered and worn over time. In addition, each time someone gets to the Bank again, all players will receive their base salary in Yen and the game will start again. In later rounds, you will only receive Power from the shelters and no extra Yen. Once the game gets to the end of 1999, which will occur after the final time someone reaches the Bank, the game will end. It appears that the person with the most Power at the very end wins the game. After watching the final scene, you go back to the title screen. That said, it is important to play well so you end up with the most Power at the end. Calculate the risks involved with each move, and try your best to become the most powerful player at the end! ===== Traps ===== NOTE: If you receive a trap, you MUST use it immediately. That is, you cannot hold onto it for future use. Checkered Flag: If you get this one, you gain an extra turn immediately. Go Arrows: This trap looks like several arrows pointing upward in a line. You can place this on any other currently placed trap to negate its effects. No Event: Looks like your typical Do Not Enter signage. If placed on a space, it means that if a player lands there, no event occurs. However, if you land on a space with this trap placed on it, you will receive a parking ticket and lose 20,000 Yen! Pickaxe: When placed on a space, it prevents you from moving onto it at all, forcing you to take another path on the board. It can only be placed on spaces next to an intersection. Spikes: This one has a black spike on a red striped background. If a player lands on this space, their car's tires will blow out, causing them to lose a turn. Stop Sign: In the form of an S icon, place this on a space and any player who passes that space must stop there, even if they were supposed to move more spaces ahead of it. ================= Game Board Spaces ================= 4-Card Event Spaces (?) ----------------------- When you land on the question mark spaces, you will be asked to pick one of four face-down cards. Each card will have Kanji symbols on it, which will give you a rough idea of what is about to happen. The possible phrases on the cards are: Bad Event (事件): This will lead to a bad event occurring. More than likely you will lose Yen/Power as a result of this event, sometimes causing all players to lose, but sometimes you may come out on top depending on the random circumstances. Event (出来事): An event may occur, which depending on its random results, may cause you to gain/lose Yen or Power. Basically, it can be a good or bad event. Family Event (冠婚葬祭): This lead to a family-related event. It can be a good result (such as receiving an inheritance, gaining Yen/Power), or a bad result (like attending a funeral, losing Yen/Power). Insurance (保険): For this scene, you will be able to buy insurance against a car accident. You can choose how much money to spend in purchasing this experience, and this may benefit your player; it is also a risk so choose carefully. Alien Spaces (A) ---------------- When you land on the red alien space, you will be rewarded with 10 Power. You may randomly be moved to another alien space further ahead on the board. Arrow Spaces (< or >) --------------------- Land on the blue/white arrow spaces and you will meet another alien who will reward you with 20 Power. Bank Space (B) -------------- This is where everyone begins the game, and each subsequent round. The goal is to make it around the board and back to the Bank first. If you do so, you will gain Power and Yen as a reward. At that point, a new round will begin and everyone will start back at this space. Casino Spaces ($) ----------------- When you land on this space, you will be offered a chance to play a slot machine at a cost of 30,000 Yen. If you accept, you will go to the slot machine screen. Press the button to spin the reels, then press the button under each reel to stop it. The prizes you can win are as follows: 3 Martinis = 5x 3 7s = 4x 2 Cherries + Any = 3x 1 Cherry + 2 Any = 2x If you lose the game, you will lose additional Yen, some Power, or both. Desert Spaces ------------- In the summer of 1997, these spaces will appear on the board, replacing certain other spaces. If you land on a desert space, you will more than likely have a bad event, losing a varying amount of Power depending on the outcome. Sometimes it is possible to have a good outcome (getting a tan, for instance). Event Spaces (P) ---------------- The event that occurs at a P space depends entirely on the location of the space you landed on. Those events are listed below. Fast Food: You will have the option of purchasing some fast food at this stop. There are three items you can buy; depending on which one you buy, you will lose that amount of Yen but gain it all back in Power. Gym: When you land in front of the Sports building, you will be able to play a swimming game. Alternate pressing A and B while moving with the Control Pad to swim a lap across the pool. The amount of Power you will receive depends on the number of seconds remaining when you reach the other side. Fail to make it and you will not gain/lose a thing. Hospital: You will be asked to donate blood to the hospital. If all goes well, you will receive 10 Power. If you get sick from the donation, you will lose 3 Power. Race Track: Here, you will be able to bet on a race between sumo wrestlers. Each player will have the option to place their bet, first picking the wrestler they think will win (1-4), and then selecting a bet amount (3000, 5000, or 10,000 Yen). The race will then commence. If your wrestler wins, you will win back Yen and Power; fail to pick a winner and you will lose Power. Gold Alien Spaces ----------------- Starting in the year 1996 in the game, these spaces will randomly replace certain spaces on the board. If you land on this space, your character will be kidnapped by the aliens. You may have the option to pick another player for the aliens to go after, sparing yourself in the process. The player you pick will be kidnapped/beaten up and sent to the nearest Hospital space, losing Yen/Power in the process. Ice Spaces ---------- In early 1998, these spaces will appear on the board, replacing the desert spaces from the previous year. If you land on an ice space, you will more than likely have a bad event, losing a varying amount of Power depending on the outcome. Sometimes it is possible to have a good outcome (avoiding falling ice, for instance). Nuclear Shelter Spaces (N) -------------------------- When you land on these spaces, you will be given the option to purchase the shelter for 300,000 Yen. If you pay for the shelter at a given space, no other player can buy it at that point. It is a risk to take, but can lead to a great payoff if it is ever needed. If you revisit your own shelter on another round, you may gain 20 Power for each shelter you own on the board. Skull Spaces (X) ---------------- Landing on one of these spaces will trigger the possibility of a bad event occurring. The results are not always negative, however; sometimes luck will be on your side and you will not lose anything. Most of the time however, an event will occur which will cause you to lose Yen/Power, or even your next turn! Special Event Spaces (S) ------------------------ When you pass by these spaces, you will be forced to stop there. You will then be given a few options to pick (if at the Airport, destinations to visit; if at the Shore/Mountain, activities to perform). Depending on what you pick, you will lose that amount of Yen but gain some/all of it back in Power. Work Spaces (W) --------------- If you land on one of the many blue spaces with a picture of a jacket on them, you will get a random job. The results of these spaces are completely random; you may get a job (lose Power), may not have a job to do (lose Power), or may get a job an excel at it (gain Yen/Power). Sometimes the job you are given is dependent on the occupation you were randomly given at the start of the game. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5.
