Basic Info [100]| O============================================================================O The Nintendo 64DD is a portable expansion unit for the Nintendo 64. The DD stands for “Dynamic Driveâ€￾ and was created to parallel the PSX’s cd drive. It would connect into the extension port underneath the Nintendo 64. The reason why why you’ve probably never heard of it (or maybe you have if you’re reading this FAQ) is because it was a complete failure and was never released except in Japan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ i. History [101] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The idea was first mentioned at the 1995 Nintendo Shoshinkai game show event. The original game that was shown was titled Creator. This game was program that could possibly replace textures and create new characters and levels. However, no playable version of this game ever came into existence and two years later at E3, Shigeru Miyamoto planned to release SimCity 64, Mario Artist, Pocket Monsters and Earthbound 64. Despite delays, the 64DD was finally released in Japan on December 1, 1999. Nintendo was reported to had been anticipating that their hardware would be a commercial failure and decided to sell the system through RANDnet. Due to the fact that it wasn’t sold to the general public and therefore didn’t sell that well, Nintendo supported the peripheral for a short time and only released nine games. Most of the games that had been planned for release were either canceled or released as Nintendo 64 titles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ii. With the help of the built-in clock Nintendo was trying to create games where things could grow and die while you weren’t playing. Two of the main complaints developers made about storage space and cost of manufacturing were solved with the 64DD. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ iii. Online [103] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ RANDnet (Recruit and Nintendo Entertainment) was an online service where players were subscribed and meant to chat, observe, beta test, listen to music, email, and play multiplayer games for the Nintendo 64DD over the internet. When you bought the console online, you received a subscription to RANDnet and would receive two games every two months and some extra magazines and newsletters. Plans changed and promises were broken. You really couldn’t do much online with the N64DD except share your Mario Artist creations and send and receive emails. The service was canceled the next year. Frequently Asked Questions [300]| O============================================================================O Q: Why was it such a failure? A: It was planned since the development of the original Nintendo 64. However, Nintendo was left in the dust by Sony’s Playstation and they knew they couldn’t release it at the original release and then things went down hill. They weren’t expecting to be lost out to Sony. Q: Will we ever see titles such as Earthbound 64, in the future? A: Hopefully! Mother 3 (The JP name) was released on the GBA but more than likely a new Earthbound will be released. Q: How can I get one? A: It’s hard. Ebay might have a rare one every so often but they were made in short supply only in Japan, good luck. O============================================================================O |4.
