Added "About this FAQ". added two moves. new logo ***_ABOUT THIS FAQ_*** I wrote this FAQ assuming you, the reader, already knew the basics of SSB. However, you may find some of the game basics in parenthesis and capital letters. Moves can be found in the "Link's Moves" section, but I have put them in the strategies where necessary, so you don't have to keep looking back if you forgot a move. I wrote this FAQ because SSB is a pretty fun game and I'm good with Link. I went in to much more depth than _most_ of the other character specific FAQs. ***_LINK_*** If you have been playing video games since the early eighties(as I have), or if the SNES was your first home system, or even if you're five years old and got an N64 for Christmas, odds are you've heard of Link. Link is the star of a series of very popular RPG's for any one of Nintendo's consoles(Virtual Boy excluded). His first game was "Legend of Zelda" for the NES, which was one of my favorites when I was a wee lad (I'm 16), and his latest is "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time", which is one of my favorite games now. In this series of games, you play Link as he fights the evil forces of Ganon(dorf), to capture the pieces of the TriForce and save the land of Hyrule(except for the GB game, in which you are on some island). Oddly, none of the stories carry over to the next game and they are all pretty much the same game over and over. That doesn't detract from the fun factor at all, however, and you should play all of these games. Now, Link as in relation to Super Smash Bros. Link is one of the easiest and best fighters to use (IMHO). He's not the most powerful, and his jumping spin attack isn't that great, but he's a well rounded character. If you are playing SSB for the first time, Link is a good choice. If you are an advanced SSB player, Link is still a good choice. Here, I have put togeather the best tactics I have for Link. ***_LINK'S MOVES_*** B =BACK F =FORWARD U =UP D =DOWN R =TOP RIGHT BUTTON + =PRESS SIMULTANEOUSLY A = SWORD SLASH A(REPEATEDLY) = RAPID SWORD THRUSTS* U,A = UPWARDS SWORD SLASH U+A = TRIPLE UPWARDS SLASH F+A = OVERHEAD CHOP D+A = TRIPLE DOWNWARDS SLASH U,A(IN AIR) = UPWARDS STAB D,A(IN AIR) = DOWNWARDS STAB B = BOOMERANG(2 HITS) U+B = TORNADO SPIN U,B(IN AIR) = TORNADO SPIN IN AIR** D+B = BOMB*** R = HOOKSHOT**** U+R(IN AIR) = UPWARDS STAB(MORE POWERFUL?) Also, until I finish the "Link Against...." section, this will help you a little against the Computer controlled opponents. While links attacks using the B button are generally more powerful, they are slower. Your best bet is to use his A button attacks to knock your opponent away, then jump in with any B attack. The platforms in SSB are very useful, by tapping D twice quickly, you will drop off. Get over your opponent, drop off, then quickly execute the downwards stab (D,A). If your opponent is above you on a platform, you can jump and preform the upwards stab (U,A), to knock them off. Then jump over them and preform the downwards stab as they get up. The Hookshot is your friend, use it often, and near the edge, sooner or later you will get a throw down. The Boomerang isn't very powerful, but it does get two hits if timed right (which isn't very hard). Also, if your opponent is behind you and above, you maybe able to knock them down by throwing the boomerang if front of you, then jumping up and out of the way. The Boomerang will curve upwards, but when you move out of the way, it will keep going, how high you jump causes it to curve more or less. This move takes some time to master, but it is useful. Your bombs are a very good weapon, but don't use them often, and don't use them too close, as they can hurt you just as much as your opponent. In most instances, if your opponent has more than 100% damage, the bomb will knock them far away, if you're lucky, this will get you a throw down. If you are fighting at Hyrule Castle, use the Twisters to your advantage. As with the bombs, if your opponent has more than 100% damage, the Twister will knock them away, usually into the background for throw down. Trap your opponent in the corner and start up Link's infinite combo (see above), when their damage level is sufficient (150% just to be sure), try to knock them into the nearest twister. If their is no Twister, or if you are at Sector Z, do the same as above, but then get them close to the edge and do a Tornado Spin(U+B) or a Overhead Chop(F+A), or use your Hookshot, and you will almost certainly get a throw down. More coming soon. ***_LINK AGAINST...._*** The tips in this section are for use against the computer. I can't say what your friends are going to do, so look in the "LINK FIGHTING BASICS" section for that. The computer, however, falls into patterns. These patterns are easily recognizeable, especially in fighting games. What I've done here is figured out the cpu's patterns and found ways to beat them. For the time being, this will only cover the fighters you face in the regular one player game, not the secret characters. This way, you are guaranteed to fight them on their own stage. I may add the secret characters later. *NOTE*-- I tested these on the game's "NORMAL" difficulty setting.--*NOTE* Link vs. Link This is an easy fight. Just trap him in the corner, start Link's infinite combo (A REPEATEDLY). Get him to about 150-200% damage, then charge him(F,F,A, QUICKLY). This will knock him up to the starting level, so jump up there and overhead slash or hookshot him off. You win,_and_ you should get a "NO MISS" bonus. And a -99 for a cheap shot.... Sometimes, he'll jump over that little turret thingie, and you can't get him in the corner for the infinite. In this instance, just hookshot or overhead slash him off, when he double jumps back and is hanging on the edge, quickly jump up and downwards stab where his hands are, this will knock him off and you should get a "SPEED" bonus. Link vs. Yoshi Team This is a fight? They hardly even attack. The best advice I can give you is knock them off in the _exact_ order in which the appear for the "Yoshi's Rainbow" bonus. There is some fun to be had here though if you get a hammer ;) Also if a red turtle shell pops up, put it on the top platform, it will knock off each Yoshi as they fall out of the sky. Link vs. Fox Fox is one of the best opponents. He is very quick, and that move he has that reflector shield thing that is _HIGHLY_ annoying. Your hookshot doesn't work well against him either. Anyway, first thing throw a bomb (D+B, THEN D+B AGAIN). _Quickly_ jump over and downwards stab. Here is where the pattern becomes obvious: after the stab, take a few steps towards the rear of the ship and continue to face the rear. He will roll to get in front of you, so take a swing at him, he will roll back behind you. Do not turn to face him! He will quickly roll back in front of you, so hit him with a boomerang, then a bomb, then jump over and downwards stab again. Jump onto the rear of ship and he will follow. You can try to knock him off now, but he'll come back. Instead, try to get him into corner for the infinite, which he'll escape after about ten hits by jumping. So when you see him start of jump hit him with an overhead slash. He will ricochet off the tail of the ship and land near the edge. Dash over and charge him(F,F,A), this will knock him off, but he will double jump and when it looks like he's not gonna make it, use his rocket punch to get back on the ship, so don't stand to close to the edge. Now you have to act quickly so he doesn't hit the ground, when the punch is over, jump and tornado spin(U+B IN THE AIR), this will knock him off. In space, no one can hear you scream, Fox. Link vs. Mario Brothers This match is only moderately hard, and that is because of the stage. Who the computer picks for your partner doesn't really matter as long as you can get both Mario and Luigi on the top platform. You'll start off on the bottom platform with Mario, dash forward and charge him(F,F,A). Immediately jump and upwards stab Luigi who should be directly above you. Mario will jump up behind you, so jump so backward so both of the brothers are in front of you. Just start hitting them with A button attacks and back them up so that they are near the edge, then hit them with a overhead slash to knock them off, only use the hookshot if there is only one brother left. The first few times they will jump back up, but just be persistant and they'll go flying sooner or later. Link vs. Pikachu Despite the fact that he is so cute, this little Pokemon is one of the best fighters in game. His electricity attacks really pack a punch. Hookshot will only work a few times against him, so don't use it too much. First thing, jump over and downwards stab him, then _quickly_ jump back to your starting posistion so as to not get hit by the electricity he shoots. When he jumps down to follow, just hit him with a bomb and then some A button attacks. Get him to at least 100% damage. From here you can go two ways, the first one is fun. The second one is tricky: 1) You may have read in other FAQs that Link's infinite combo doesn't work in Safron City, because of the random Pokemon which pop out of the door. I beg to differ, because, in fact, you can use those to your advantage. When that door opens, you have about five seconds until that Pokemon pops out. Trap Pikatchu in the corner and start the infinite. When you see the door open just keep going, and counting the seconds, when it gets to four and a half, jump back out of the way. The Pokemon will pop out and..... Bye-bye Pikachu! I don't remember if you get a "Pokemon Finish" bonus for this or not. 2) There is a bug in the game so that if you knock Pikachu in between the main building and the heli- pad, when he has over 120 or so % damage, he can't get out. At least it's like that on my game. I can't really tell you how to do this, you just have to time it right. Link vs. Giant Donkey Kong As far as I can tell, Giant DK follows a pretty much set pattern every time. Again, your partners are not important. From the start, he will begin to charge his punch, so jump up there and knock him down with a downwards stab. This should put him on the main platform. Usually the pattern is this: if you knock him off the platform once, he'll spin back. Twice and he'll spin back again. Third time, he won't come back; you win. You have to make sure of two things however: 1) You knock him far enough away. If you don't, he can grab the edge and flip back up. 2) You must knock him off when the barrel is on the other side so he can't use it. Link vs. Kirby Team Kirby Team isn't much harder than Yoshi Team, and there are only eight of them. Usually all it takes is hookshot per Kirby. A few of them might make it back though, so just hookshot them again. Link vs. Samus At the beginning of the match, she will start to charge her gun. There are two things that work well here: 1) Move in a few steps, use your hookshot and clobber her. 2) If you're quicker, you can pull out a bomb(D+B), throw it so it explodes on contact(D+B AGAIN) then jump over and do a downwards stab. Here, she'll do one of two things: 1) Start shooting at you with small blasts, in which case you should get in as close as possible, block and hookshot (Z TO BLOCK, + A TO HOOKSHOT) and clobber her. 2) Start charging again, in which case you start over. By now you shold see the acid starting to rise beneath the main platform. If you get close to her, she'll try to evade, follow and hit her with A button attacks to keep her from charging up. When the acid starts coming up to engulf the platforms, knock her far away with either a hookshot or a overhead slash(F+A), and quickly jump to the upper platforms, where you'll be safe from the acid. She'll hit the acid on the first rise, and it will lower and begin a second rise. Here, you should jump to the uppermost platform, which won't be engulfed.. Keep Samus off of this platform by hitting her whenever she triple jumps close. _DO NOT LET HER TOUCH THE PLATFORM, HIT HER WHILE SHE IS STILL IN THE AIR_. Do this right and she'll hit the acid a second time, which will send her flying into the background. Link vs. Metal Mario Okay, all this guy does is walk around and hit you when he gets close. That's it. Then why is he so darned hard? You will most likely lose a life on this one. As far as I can tell, just hit him until he gets about 230% damage, then hookshot him or overhead slash him for the throw down. It takes a while to get that much damage on him though. Link vs. Fighting Polygon Team This isn't overly hard, but it is incredibly monotonous. Just use the same tactics as against Kirby Team. Link vs. Master Hand Master Hand doesn't really have any patterns, so I've found ways to counter, or at least give him some damage with every move he does. You have to remember that there are two of his moves you can't escape no matter what: his downwards punch and his downwards slap. Lots of times you'll find him just sitting there above you, doing nothing, take this opportunity to let him have it. I know earlier I said don't use alot of bombs, but Master Hand is the exception, they take off more than 20% damage! Use bombs often with this one. I don't get why they made a boss this easy, the only thing he has going is that 300 hit point thing. ROCKET HAND-- In this move, MH's glove sets afire and he takes off through the background like a rocket. When he is about to come back and hit you the first time, triple jump to dodge it. Move to the far left side of the platform, because he always lands on the right side. While he's landing, throw a bomb then jump in with a downwards stab, you'll get two hits because of his size. TIP TOE-- In this move, he starts to walk across the platform on two fingers, when he gets in close, he proceeds to kick you into oblivion. get as far away as possible and hit him with a barrage of bombs(I've managed 3) and triple jump over him to avoid the kick. SPINNING TOP-- When he begins to spin above your head, triple jump out of the way, then while he's spinning, hit him with three or four bombs. PUNCH/SLAP-- These moves are self-explanatory. Just jump over them and hit him in the back with a tornado spin. DOWNWARDS PUNCH/SLAP-- You can't avoid these. Period. The best you can do is meet him in the air with an upwards stab(U+A). I think that covers them all. ***_ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS_*** THESE ARE OTHER FAQS THAT HELPED ME OUT: SUPER SMASH BROTHERS INFINITE COMBO FAQ, BY ARLEN KWONG.
