Introduction MJQINTRO | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- Mahjong Quest is what you would get if you take your classic Mahjong Solitaire game, add a pinch of a storyline, sprinkle in some special tiles, and then puree in a blender. The storyline for the game is basic. Your village was destroyed by mystical dragons. In order to defeat the dragons, you must travel the land, solving various Mahjong puzzles to complete your task. How exactly a game defeats the dragons, it is never said. However, the special tiles in the game add a unique twist to a classic game. For this guide, I will be attempting to visually represent mahjong tiles using really easy and really bad looking ASCII squares. They will look like this: --- | | | | --- I am not good with ASCII art, so forgive me if some of my designs are really bad. I mean REALLY BAD. ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 2. Version History MJQVHIST | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- Version 1.0 (03/20/06): This guide has been started and hopefully will be completed when submitted to GameFAQs. ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 3. Playing Mahjong Quest MJQPLAYI | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- Normally, when playing regular Mahjong Solitaire, the objective of the game is to match tiles together to clear them off until all the tiles of the design. However, in Mahjong Quest, the goal is to match the Yin and the Yang symbol in as little moves as possible. You get more points for leaving tiles on the board. This section will teach you the basics how to play Mahjong Quest and then provide some more advanced tips for maximizing the amount of points you can score. ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 3a. The Basics of Mahjong Quest MJQPLBAS | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- Mahjong Quest plays like a normal Mahjong Solitaire game, with the exception of some special tiles. This section will explain some of the basic rules to Mahjong Quest. The objective of most Mahjong Solitaire games is to clear the board of all tiles. However, this is not the case in Mahjong Quest. Your objective is to simply find and then match the Yin and Yang tiles together within the time limit. If you do not, you lose a life. You start off with five lives. There is an undo button that allows you to undo your last move. Also, you can restart the board you are on at any point. However, this will not reset the time bar. Also, if you run out of moves on a board, you will either need to restart or undo your last move. To get rid of tiles, you must match the same tiles together. You can only choose a tile if that tile does not have another tile on top of it and does not have a tile on either it’s right or it’s left side. For example if you have three tiles in a row such as this: --- --- --- |1 |2 |3 | | | | | --- --- --- You will be able to choose and remove tiles 1 and 3, but not tile 2, as it is surrounded on both sides. Also, if a tile is partially surrounded on one side, such as this: --- |1 | | |--- ---|2 | | |--- ---|3 | | | --- Again, you will only be able to remove tiles 1 and 3, but not tile 2. A tile must have one side that must be complete clear in order to be moved. The same holds true for tiles on top of one another. If a tile has another tile that is partially on top of it, it cannot be removed. An example of this would be: --- |1 | | --- -|2 | | | --- In this situation, tile 2 can be removed, but tile 1 cannot, as it has something that is blocking it. You can always tell which tile can be moved by the outline. If a tile is outlined in yellow, that means the tile can be moved. If the tile is outlined in blue, that means that the tile is blocked by something. If you match two tiles together, they are removed. There are five types of regular tiles: number tiles, wind tiles, season tiles, plant tiles, and dragon tiles. Some of the tiles have their own unique properties to them in regards to matching The first type of tile is the number tiles. These tiles make up the majority of each Mahjong design. Each number tile has a number on it and a design on the tile. The three types of designs are discs, bamboo shoots, and Chinese numbers. Both the number and the symbol on the tile must match in order for the tiles to be cleared off. For example, if a tile has two discs on it, it can only be matched up with another tile with two discs. It cannot be matched up with a tile that has two bamboo shoots on it or a tile with the Chinese number 2. The second type of tiles is the wind tiles. These tiles letters on them and represent the four winds: north, south, east, and west. These tiles have their Chinese representation on them instead of designs and a letter on them representing what type of wind they are. As with the number tiles, you must match these tiles directly. An E tile will not match up with an N tile, but it will match up with another E tile. The third type of regular tiles is the season tiles. There are four of these tiles: SPR, SUM, AUT, and WIN. There is only one of each tile at the start of the game. These tiles can match up with any other season tile. For example, a SPR tile can match up with a SUM, AUT, or a WIN tile. The fourth type of regular tiles is the plant tiles. These tiles do not have any letters or numbers on them. Instead, they have plant designs on them. Just like the season tiles, there is only one of each tile at the start of the game. These tiles can match up with any other plant tile, also just like the season tiles. The final type of regular tiles is the dragon tiles. There are three types of dragon tiles: green, red, and blue. These dragon tiles only have the picture of a dragon on them. These dragon tiles can only match up with the same type of dragon. For example, a red dragon can only match up with another red dragon and cannot be matched up with a blue or a green dragon. There are special tiles in Mahjong Quest, and most of them will be reviewed in section 3. However, there are two really important special tiles that need to be reviewed right now. Those tiles are the Yin and the Yang tiles. These tiles only match with each other and cannot match with any other tile. When you match these two tiles together, the game is over. Any tiles that are left on the board are added to your score and you move on to the next level and the next design. IF you fail to match up the Yin and the Yang tiles before time runs out, you will lose a life. You start off with five lives. If you lose all five lives, you will have to either start over from the beginning or continue. If you continue, you will lose all your points that you have accumulated. ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 3b. Advanced Tips MJQPLADV | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- This section will tell you how to clear tiles faster and get a higher score. If you clear off the same matching tiles two times in a row, you will get bonus points for the second clearing. For example, if you were to clear off a pair of blue dragons and then clear off another pair of blue dragons with your next match, you would get 25 bonus points. It’s always a good habit in Mahjong Solitaire games to look for four of a kind, as that will allow you to clear off tiles without worrying about not being able to match the same tile in the future. Also, in Mahjong Quest, it is better to match the Yin and Yang symbols using as few matches as possible. This way, you leave the most tiles on the board. Tiles that are still on the board when you have cleared the stage will be counted as bonus points to your score. These bonus points are higher than what you would get clearing them normally, so always try to leave as many tiles as possible on the board. Dragons give you the most bonus points, so always try to keep as many of those on the board as possible. Finally, only use special tiles when you absolutely need them. The special tiles are best used when you have no other options. They can help you in a pinch if you run out of matches. ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 3c. Scoring MJQPLSCO | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- Tiles have two values in Mahjong Quest. The first value is what you get when you match the tiles. The second value is what you get when you leave the tiles on the board when you clear it. The bonus you get for leaving tiles on the board is always greater than what you get for matching them, so try to leave as many tiles on the board when you match the Yin and the Yang tiles. -------------- Matching Score -------------- These are the scores you get for matching tiles during the game: Number = numeric value on the tile Dragon = 10 Wind = 10 Plant = 15 Season = 15 Matching two pairs back to back will give you an additional bonus of 25 points. ----------- Clear Score ----------- These are the bonuses you get for leaving tiles on the board when you match the Yin and the Yang tiles: Number, Wind, Plant, Season = 50 Special Tile = 250 Dragon = 1000 ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 4. Special Tiles MJQSTILE | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- There are many special tiles in Mahjong Quest designed to assist you and add a new twist to the game. Here is a list of the tiles, what they do, and on which designs you can find them on. ----------- Stone Brick ----------- The Stone Brick tiles cannot be cleared through matching. They can only be cleared by Dynamite, which is another special tile. These Stone Brick tiles are designed to hamper your progress. However, most of the time, they can either be ignored or cleared off the board. They are a minor nuisance at best. Stages found: 3. Dotty 5. Winged Crown 8. Double Trouble 10. Junction 24. Starry 28. Oh the Layers! -------- Dynamite -------- The Dynamite tile’s only purpose is to destroy the Stone Brick tiles. Dynamite tiles will only show up on stages where there are Stone Bricks to destroy. Stages found: 5. Winged Crown 10. Junction 24. Starry 28. Oh the Layers! ------ Magnet ------ Magnet tiles move any tile on the board to where the Magnet tile is and disappears. This can be good for moving a tile you can’t match just yet. The Magnet tile disappears after use. Stages found: 6. Attraction 13. Platform 20. Magnet, My Love 26. Holey Walls ------- Cyclone ------- Cyclone tiles remove all copies of a certain tile from the board. This can be a very powerful tile, especially when you are completely blocked off from getting something. However, it is not used very often, so enjoy it while you can. Stages found: 9. Move With Storm 10. Junction ------------ Folded Paper ------------ The Folded Paper tile will make two different tiles match by changing one of the tiles. It will also cause the other tiles to change also, to avoid there being any tiles not able to be matched up. Stages found: 12. Parapets 13. Platform 16. Mirage 28. Oh the Layers! ---- Swap ---- As the name suggests, the Swap tile swaps the position of two tiles. This is only useful if you have a tile on top of the same tile that you need to get rid of. Other than that, there really isn’t that much use. Stages found: 15. Cross and Spiral 24. Starry -- Up -- The Up tile makes the value of a number tile increase by one. It will also make all tiles of the same number and design increase by one. This tile only works on number tiles. This is a good tile to use when a tile is blocked off or when you can’t find a tile to match a certain number tile. Stages found: 18. Up and Down 22. Heartbreaker 27. Pick Carefully 28. Oh the Layers! ---- Down ---- The Down tile works the same was as the Up tile, but it decreases the value of a number tile by one. Like the Up tile, it will also change the value of all tiles with the same number and design and it only works on number tiles. Stages found: 18. Up and Down 22. Heartbreaker 27. Pick Carefully 28. Oh the Layers! ---------- Magic Wand ---------- Magic Wands change the design on number tiles. For example, if you match a Magic Wand with a number tile of 9 with a disc design on it, it will change the design of every number tile with a value of 9 from bamboo shoots into discs. Stages found: 19. Mirror Mirror 21. 4th Eliminator 22. Heartbreaker 23. ...in the Wall 27. Pick Carefully ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 5. Mahjong Quest Walkthrough MJQWALKT | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- There are many different stages and designs in Mahjong Quest. This walkthrough is designed to take you through each level, point out where the Yin and the Yang symbols are, and what are the best methods of tackling these puzzles. The Yin and the Yang symbols are represented by the YIN and YNG in the designs. Unless otherwise stated, they are almost always never visible at the start of the game. Also, the YIN and the YNG are the approximate place where the tiles are at in the design in respect to all of the other tiles. In my designs, the YIN and YNG will always override any other tiles that may be on top, since I am trying to provide the locations of those tiles using my poor ASCII art. The walkthrough sections are divided up into the areas you make your way towards. First, you make your way towards the house, probably representing the village. Then you have to pass through four different gates, probably representing the seasons (I can’t really identify which season is which, though). The last area you make your way towards is the mountain. ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 5a. Village MJQWTVIL | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- The first set of five designs is all really basic. They are really easy and designed to teach you the basics of Mahjong Solitaire. There are a couple of special tiles in these designs, but most of them are simple. --------------- 1. Dragon Winds --------------- This is the first puzzle and it is fairly simple. The Yin and the Yang tiles are in plain view. It’s really easy to get some good scores on this map, as you really only need to focus on clearing off the six tiles surrounding the Yin and the Yang tiles. Design: --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | |YIN|YNG| | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ----------------- 2. Now You See Me ----------------- This next puzzle is also fairly simple. The Yin and the Yang tiles are visible. This puzzle is the first puzzle to introduce the number tiles, but it’s only one design of them, which are the discs. Just use the same philosophy as the last design and just try to clear everything to the sides of the Yin and the Yang tiles. Design: --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | |---|YIN|YNG|---| | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ---| | --- --- | | |---| | |---| | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- -------- 3. Dotty -------- This stage also has visible Yin and Yang tiles. Also, this stage introduces immovable Stone Bricks. You can’t remove these tiles currently, so you will have to play around them. However, they don’t really get in your way on this puzzle. The stage is also very straightforward. Just go after the Yin and the Yang symbols. Design: --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------------------- | | | | |YIN|YNG| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------------------- | | | --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- -| | |- --- ---- | | | --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- --------- 4. Crabby --------- This design is in the shape of a crab (in the game, not in my picture, my picture looks really bad). The Yang tile is semi visible, so you have a good idea of where you need to get to from the start. The Yin and the Yang tiles are next to each other, so there’s no real hunting for them. Just do your best to get to the Yin and the Yang tiles using as few tiles as possible. Design: -- ----------- --- | | | | | --- ---| || | | | | | | | --| ||----------- | | || ------- --- ----|| --- | | | || | | | | || |-- --- ------------------ | |YIN|YNG | | | | | | | | |--| | | --- -----| --- |---- | | | | | | | | ------- --- --- | | | | | | | --| | |----------- | | | | -----| | | | | --- ------ | | | | | | ------------- --------------- 5. Winged Crown --------------- This stage is the first stage where the Yin and the Yang tiles are complete hidden. They are underneath the stone bricks that you can’t match with any normal tiles. To get rid of the stone bricks, you have Dynamite tiles. These tiles blow up the Stone Bricks. You have to click on the dynamite first and then click on the Stone Brick. If you try to click on the Stone Brick first and then the Dynamite, the Stone Brick will not be removed. For this stage, just get to the Dynamite, then get to the Stone Bricks, and then remove the Stone Bricks. From there, the stage is easy. Design: ----- --- --- --- ----- | | | | | | | | ---| | | | | |--- | |--- --- --- --- ---| | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- | |YIN|YNG| | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | --- | | | | | | | | | | |-------------------| | ---| | | | | |--- | | | | | | | | ----------------------- ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 5b. Gate 1 MJQWTGT1 | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- The next few stages hold some of the hardest puzzles in the entire game. These puzzles are a major jump in difficulty, so be prepared for it. If you were having problems clearing tiles quickly in the first few puzzles, then you may want to practice some more on those puzzles before taking on the next set of five. For the rest of the puzzles, it’s always best to search for matches of four, as you can clear off all of the same tiles without having to worry about one of those tiles being blocked off in the future. There are some more special tiles to assist you, but the two hardest puzzles in this set of five don’t have any special tiles in them. ------------- 6. Attraction ------------- This stage introduces the number tiles with the bamboo shoots designs. This means that there are a whole lot more tiles on the board. Designs take longer to complete. You’re also probably going to have to clear off most of the board before you can get to the Yin and the Yang tiles. Get used to it because the most of the boards are going to be like this. Also new on this stage are Magnet tiles, which can move any tile to where the magnet is. Design: ------------------- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------- --- --- --- | | --- --- | | | | | --- | | | --- --- -| | | |- --- --- --- | | | -| |YNG-- | --- | | | | | --- | | | | | | --- --- -| | | | |- -| |- | | | -|YIN|- --- | --- | | | | | --- | | | | | --- --- -| | |- --- --- --- | | --- --- | | | | | | | | ----------------------- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------- --- --- ------------------- 7. Rectangle Thingy ------------------- This is probably the hardest puzzle in the entire game for me. I swear half the time, the puzzle is not solvable. The problem with this design is that there is a small area for the design. That means that all the tiles are stacked upon each other. It is easy to make wrong moves and get tiles stuck on the bottom. If you make a mistake and have to restart, odds are, you won’t have enough time the second time around to complete the puzzle. Design: --- --- --------------- --- --- | | | | --- --- | | | | | | | | | --- | | | | | --- --- ---| | | |- - --- --- | -----------| YNG---------- | | | | | | | |---| | | | | | | -| | | | | | | | | | | |- | ----------YIN |----------- | | | | | --- | | | | --- --- ---| | |--- --- --- | | | | --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --------------- --- --- ----------------- 8. Double Trouble ----------------- This is another design that can cause problems to a beginner. The tiles are more spread out on this stage, which is a good thing. However, there are still a lot of tiles on top of each other, which isn’t a good thing. It’s always best to clear out two pairs at the same time whenever possible. It’s easy to get caught with the tiles you need being blocked off. Design: --- |---| | | ---| |--- | |---| | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | ------- ----------- --- --- |----- | | | | | | |---| | | | | | | | | | | | | | |- ----------- ---| | |----- |YIN| |YNG| |---| | | | | | | | | | | --- --- ----------- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- ----------- --- ------------------ 9. Move With Storm ------------------ This stage has two sections. There’s a top section and a bottom section. In between the two sections is two of the new special type of tile, which is the Cyclone tile. These tiles remove all copies of a certain tile, so they are very powerful and very useful. Use these tiles as a last resort when you are stuck. As for the puzzle, focus on just getting to the Yin and the Yang tiles. They are not hard to get to, since they are close to the edges. Design: --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- | | | | | | | |YNG| | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- | |YIN| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- ------- --- --- --- ------------ 10. Junction ------------ Just from the start of the stage, you can see there are a lot of special tiles out in the open. The trick to this stage is to work around the Cyclone tiles until you have a good grip as to which tiles are going to be problems. They need to be gotten rid of to get to the tiles below them, but since these tiles are really powerful, it’s best to use them smartly. The Dynamite doesn’t have to be used, but it can be if you can’t get to the Yin and the Yang symbols from the left side. Design: --- --- --- --- --- --- | |---| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- |--- ----- --- --- | | |-| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ----- --- |--- --- --- --- --- | | --- YIN-- | | | --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | ---| |-| |- --- --- -| |- | | --- YNG-- | | | --- | | | | | | | | | | | ----- --- |--- --- --- --- --- | | |-| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- |--- ----- --- --- | |---| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 5c. Gate 2 MJQWTGT2 | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- The next set of few stages have some revisions of classic Mahjong designs. Most of these designs are basic. Also, there are powerful special tiles introduced in the next few stages, which is really helpful. All in all, the difficulty isn’t as bad as the last set of five. ---------- 11. Stairs ---------- This is really a basic Mahjong Solitaire design. The stair shape means that you have to focus on the top of the stairs and work your way down to the bottom of the stairs. This stage is normally really easy though. Design: --- --- --- --- --- --- | --- --- | --YNG| --- --- | | --- --- | | --- --- | --- --- | --- --- | --- | | --- --- | | --- --- | | --- --- | --- --- | --- --- |---|---| | --- --- | | | | | | | | | | || -| | | | | | | | | | --- --- |---|---| --- --- | | | | | | | -| | | --- --- --- --- | --- --- -| | | -| |- | | | | --- --- | --- | --- --- | | | | | | | -| | | --- --- | --- --- | --- --- -| | | -| |- | | | | --- --- |YIN-- | --- --- | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- ------------ 12. Parapets ------------ This design is another common one, although in normal Mahjong Solitaire, there are enough tiles to connect the outside areas, making it even harder. This stage introduces the Folded Paper tile, which makes two different tiles match. This is another good tile to use when you are stuck. As for the stage, there are a lot of small little areas. You really want to focus on the small central area, since that is where the Yin and the Yang tiles are. Design: --- --- ----------- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- ----------- --- --- --- --- --- --YIN-YNG-- --- |---| -| --- --- |- |---| |---| | | | | | | | |---| | | | -| | |- | | | | | -| --- --- |- | | |---| | | | | | | | |---| | | -| | | |- |- | | |---| | -| --- --- |- | |---| | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ----------- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- ----------- --- --- ------------ 13. Platform ------------ This is another design that is common in Mahjong Solitaire. There is a top layer and then there are tiles underneath that layer. There are some special tiles on the pillars that can be helpful, such as Magnets and Folded Papers. Get rid of the top layer first and then continue to get rid of the bottom pyramid. The Yin and the Yang symbols are at the bottom of everything. Design: --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | |YIN|YNG| | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --------- 14. Wedge --------- This stage has three separate areas to get tiles from. Just focus on the bottom part to get to the Yin and the Yang symbols. Only use tiles from the top area if you need to match something up with a tile from the bottom area. This board is pretty straight forward. Design: --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | |YIN| | | |YNG| | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- -------------------- 15. Cross and Spiral -------------------- This stage really doesn’t translate well to ASCII art (I assumed everything is symmetrical, which I hope it is). There are five sections on the board, but you really only have to deal with the top right and bottom left areas, as that is where the Yin and the Yang tiles are. This stage introduces the Swap tile, but it really isn’t that helpful. It’s more in the way than anything else. Design: --- --- |------- -------| | | | | | | | | | | | |--- ---| | | | |------- | | |YNG -------| | | | | | | | | | ---| ----- --- ----- |--- --- ------- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | --- --- --- | | | | --- -|---|- --- ---| | | | | |--- |----------- --- -----------| | | | |YIN| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |----------- -----------| | | | | --- --- ------- -------------------| --- 2|------------------------------------------------- Mahjong Quest | | | | FAQ/Walkthrough | --- | 5d. Gate 3 MJQWTGT3 | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- This is the halfway point. You have already completed 15 puzzles. Now it’s time to get the other 15. As always, new tiles will be introduces in the next section. Some of the puzzles in this set look hard, but because of the placement of the Yin and the Yang tiles, they are actually really easy to complete, once you know where the tiles are located at. ---------- 16. Mirage ---------- On this stage, start at the top and get rid of that upper ring first. After that, make your way to the Yin and the Yang symbols that are in the top right and bottom left. One more quick point, it may not look like it from either the game design or the ASCII art design, but all the bottom tiles except for the corners are accessible without having to take out any tiles. That includes both Folded Paper tiles along the center row. Tipsy Towers ---------------- On this stage, the Yin and the Yang tiles are visible. However, getting to them is the problem. There are two tall stacks of tiles on both sides of the Yin and the Yang. Your focus should be on these two stacks. The other areas should just be used to get tiles from. Once you have gotten rid of the two middle stacks, the rest should be easy. Up and Down --------------- This stage introduces two new tiles, the Up tile and the Down tile. They are all over this stage. They can be very useful, especially if you are running out of matches. These tiles make number tiles go up one number or down one number. On this stage, use the plentiful tiles to your advantage. There are a lot of tiles on this board and everything is next to each other, so it can create some problems. Mirror Mirror ----------------- This stage introduces Magic Wands, which changes the design on number tiles. This stage is pretty simple. The Yin and the Yang tiles are in the corners of the design, so just aim for the tall stacks in the corners. If you just focus in that area, the stage is relatively simple. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- |YIN| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- | | | | | | | |YNG| | | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ------------------- 20. Magnet, My Love ------------------- This stage has a horrible title. Either way, the Yin and the Yang symbols are easy to get to. You don’t even have to go into the stacked up middle area. The magnets located on the top strip just make the stage easier, since there are really only about three tiles that block off the tiles that you are trying to get to. All in all, this is one of the easier stages. Gate 4 MJQWTGT4 | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- Now, finally, the background to the game changes. The mountain background looks so much better than the gate design. The background is easier on my eyes at least. In this set of boards, like the last set, the designs look really complicated, but due to Yin and Yang tile placement, you can ignore most of the window dressing and just get to Yin and Yang tiles. However, watch out for the last board in this set, as it is the hardest design of the five. ------------------ 21. 4th Eliminator ------------------ This stage is really long and really flat, which ups the difficulty just a little bit. However, the Yin and the Yang tiles are close to the edges, so it’s not really that bad. Just get rid of the tall areas on both the left and the right side and you should be able to see where the Yin and the Yang tiles are. Getting to them should be easy once all the tiles are off from top of them. There are two Magic Wands in the corners if you need some help. Design: --- --- --- --- |---| | | |---| |---| | | |---| | |--- --- --- --- --- ---| | | -----|---| | |---|----- | -| ---|---| | |---|--- |- | | | | |--- ---| | | | | | -|YIN|- |---|---| -| |- | --- ---| |-| | |-| |--- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | -| |- |---|---| -|YNG|- | -| ---|---| | |---|--- |- | | | | |--- ---| | | | | | -----|---| | |---|----- | ---| | | | | | |--- | |--- --- --- --- --- ---| | |---| | | |---| | | | | | | --- --- --- --- ---------------- 22. Heartbreaker ---------------- This is another hard looking stage that is easily overcome once you know where the Yin and the Yang tiles are. Just focus on top left and bottom right corners to get to your goal tiles. If you run into problems, there is a magic wand in the center and up and down tiles in the top right and bottom left corners. Design: --- --- ----- ----- --- --- |YIN| | | ------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- ---| | | |--- --- --- | --- ---| ------- |--- --- | | | --- | | | | --- | | -| |---| |--- ---| |---| |- -| |- --- -| |- | | | | | | |---| | | |---| -| |- --- -| |- | --- | | --- | -| | |--- ---| | |- | --- ---| ------- |--- --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | --- --- ---| | | |--- --- --- | | | | ------- | | |YNG| | | | | | | | | | | --- --- ----- ----- --- --- ------------------ 23. ...in the Wall ------------------ This is another hard looking stage that is betrayed by easy placement of the Yin and the Yang tiles. Your goal is to smartly use the two Magic Wands on the stage, as they are covering up the Yin and the Yang tiles. Once they are gone, work your way to the bottom of those two stacks. There are a lot of tiles stacked upon each other on this stage, so it’s easy to get a tile stuck underneath its matching tile. Design: --- --- --- --YIN-- | | | | | -------------| | | | |- | | | | |--- --- --- --YNG| | | | | | | | | | | -------------| | | | |- | | --- --- --- --- | | | | | | --- | | | | --- ------- | | | | |---| | | ---| | | |---| | | | --- --- ---------- 24. Starry ---------- On this stage, the Yin and the Yang symbols are blocked off by Stone Bricks. There are four Dynamites to get to them, but you only need two of them. The Dynamites are found in each of the four corners. Once you get to two of them, you only need to blow away one side of the Stone Bricks to get to the Yin and the Yang symbols. London Bridge ----------------- Okay, this board is downright hard. I apologize for my design not being anywhere near the real design. I couldn’t get a good grasp of the symmetry, so I did my best to emulate the thing. Either way, it is hard to focus on the two corners where the Yin and the Yang tiles are because there are so many tiles stacked on top of each other. You have to take off the top layer to get to the bottom layer. Once the top layer is off, you can focus on the two corners where the Yin and the Yang tiles are at. Mountain MJQWTMOU | | | | -------------------| --- |------------------------------------------------- ------- You are almost there. Just five more puzzles left. As usual, the hardest is saved for last. There are a lot of surprises left in store for the last few designs, so be on your guard for anything. These puzzles can get very frustrating and, while there is your usual assortment of special tiles, they’re placed in a way that their help is minimal at best. It’s always best to try to play these tiles smartly to maximize their effects. --------------- 26. Holey Walls --------------- This stage can be difficult. You need to focus on the central area to get to the Yin and the Yang tiles. There are Magnet tiles if you can get to the middle of the north and southern walls. Magnets are always useful if you can get to them, but you shouldn’t focus on getting to them. There are a lot of tiles on top of the Yin and the Yang symbols, so you might find yourself digging through the two walls just trying to find the right tile. Design: ------------------------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------------------- --- --- --- --- --- --- |---| |---|---|---|---|---| | ----------------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | |-| | | | | YIN YNG| |- | ----------------------- | | | | | | | | | |---| |---|---|---|---|--- | | | | | | | | --- --- --- --- --- --- ------------------------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ------------------------------- ------------------ 27. Pick Carefully ------------------ This stage is called pick carefully because there are a lot of tiles stacked upon each other. You do have two Magic Wands, one Up, and one Down tile to help you out, but remember, they only work on number tiles. If you have a different type of tile that is stuck, it can cause you to lose a life. The Yin and the Yang tiles are in the center, so you pretty much have to get rid of just about every tile to win. Design: ----- ----- --- ----- ----- | | ---| |---| |--- | | | | | | | | | | | | ---| |---| |---| |--- | |---| --YIN-- |---| | | | | | | | | | | --- --- -| | |- --- --- | | --- --- | | | | | | | | | --- --- -| | |- --- --- | |---| --YNG-- |---| | | | | | | | | | ---| |---| |---| |--- | | ---| |---| |--- | | | | | | | | | | | | ----- ----- --- ----- ----- ------------------ 28. Oh the Layers! ------------------ The timer can play a major factor into this stage. Even if you do everything right, the timer can still beat you. That is because you have to clear
everything and then clear off at least 8 Stone Brick tiles with Dynamite.
The Yin and the Yang tiles are in the top right and bottom left hand corners.
The problem is, they are both underneath four Stone Brick tiles. The
Dynamite is underneath the regular Mahjong tiles. You do get three other
special tiles to assist you a little, but while they do help, they don’t help
as much as you would think. Those three tiles are a Folded Paper tile, an Up
tile, and a Down tile. Try to go as fast as possible, because the timer is
not your friend on this stage. Oh, one more thing, there are 16 Stone Brick
tiles and 10 Dynamite tiles. You do the math.

29. Ache
--------

This stage is a real pain, hence the name. There are a lot of tiles on top
of each other, making it really hard. Try to focus on finding four of the
same tiles. Even if you can’t match all four at the current time, having
them visible means that a tile isn’t underneath its match. One simple
mistake early on could have huge ramifications at the end. You probably will
not have time to Undo all your moves or Restart the board, so it is pretty
much a one shot deal. You either get the first time or you lose a life.

30. 3’s a Crowd
---------------

This is the last stage. Of course, there’s a major surprise at the end.
This stage introduces the third design of the number tiles in Mahjong, which
are the Chinese numbers tiles. Of course, this adds more tiles onto the
board and makes things more complicated. However, this stage is not as hard
as the other designs of the set, partially because of the placement of the
Yin and the Yang tiles. Just focus on getting to these tiles at the top left
and bottom right hand corners and you should complete the map with fewer
problems than the last four boards. Once this stage has been completed, you
have beaten Mahjong Quest.

After board 30 is completed, you have beaten the mythical dragons. However,
there is a new task at hand. Your new task will be to go through each board
again a second time. However, there is a difference. Each board has now
been reversed. While most of the boards are symmetrical and aren’t affected
that much by the mirror mode, some are. Either way, it’s a new challenge to
prove that you are truly indeed the Mahjong master.

Q. I own a cheat website named www.randomcheatsiteonlyvisitedbytwopeople.com
and I was wondering can I put your guide on my site?

A. Okay, this FAQ is going up right now. The answer will be no 99 times out
of 100. GameFAQs right now is the only place that this guide will be
allowed. No, I don’t care how many visitors your site gets. No, I don’t
want your super duper ultra mega membership package. I only have the time
to keep up with one website, not 200. While I do want to help as many
people as possible, I’ve been to other FAQ websites. None of them can
come even close to the presentation and the professionalism that GameFAQs
has. None. And no, I don’t care to visit your website either. If you
send me an e-mail asking if I would like to put my guide on your website,
I will most likely respond with 3 characters: No.

Sorry to sound harsh, but that’s the fact. If I wanted to put my guide on
your website, I would have asked you to post it. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
