GAME CONTROLS: To move around, use the directional pad or the 2, 4, 6, and 8 keys on the keypad. You can interact with objects that have yellow borders by bumping into them. Pressing the 5 key switches between children and dismisses dialogue boxes. CHARACTERS: Violet Baudelaire - Violet, at 14, is the eldest child of the Baudelaire orphans. She can invent devices to help solve problems, and because she is the tallest, she can reach things that Klaus and Sunny can't. Klaus Baudelaire - Klaus, at 12, is the middle child of the Baudelaire orphans. He's an avid reader with a photographic memory, and he's stronger than Violet and Sunny. Sunny Baudelaire - Sunny, a baby, is the youngest of the Baudelaire orphans. She has powerful teeth that can perform seemingly impossible tasks, and she can get into tight spaces that Klaus and Violet can't access. Count Olaf - The closest living relative of the Baudelaire children. They're sent to live with them after the tragic death of their parents. NOTE: This is a straightforward walkthrough of all the tasks you must perform in order to win the game; however, it's fun to explore the interactive items with various characters before doing the mandatory things because the children generally have amusing things to say! I highly recommend not using a walkthrough at all. =D WALKTHROUGH: -Chapter 1- The Bad Beginning You are currently controlling Klaus, who is in the foyer of Olaf's decrepit house. This morning, Olaf has ordered the children to complete a list of chores, the first of which is to wash Olaf's dirty dishes. There are three piles of dirty dishes to locate. One pile is on the coffee table in the living room [lower left room on the first floor]. One pile is on the dining room table [upper left room on the first floor, just north of the living room]. One pile is on the kitchen table [upper right room on the first floor]. Any of the three children may collect the dishes, but only Violet and Klaus are tall enough to reach the sink and wash them. Unfortunately, there's no soap, so the children will have to make soap using household items. Klaus read once that soap is made from heating lard [animal fat] and lye [burnt ashes], so gather those items. Burnt ash can be found in the living room fireplace, but don't send Sunny for it, or she'll think she's supposed to eat it rather than collect it! There's beef grease in the oven in the kitchen to be used for lard, but again, don't send Sunny because she can't reach it. Violet is the inventor, so send her to the kitchen stove to make the soap once you've retrieved both items. After the soap is made, send either Violet or Klaus to the kitchen sink to wash the dishes. -Chapter 2- Cooking for the Count Count Olaf's acting troupe is coming over for dinner, and the children must somehow prepare a meal for them. Begin by finding three ingredients for dinner. There's pasta right in the kitchen cupboard, as well as something in the back, but nobody can reach the second item just yet. Send Klaus to the small room on the bottom right of the first floor to break the loose leg off of the table. Any of the children can then use the table leg to reach the onion, the second ingredient, in the back of the kitchen cupboard. Finally, send Sunny through the front door opening to retrieve parsley, the third ingredient, from the garden. The children now have all of the ingredients they need to make Pasta Puttanesca! Now they'll have to find items that will allow them to boil and strain the pasta. Any of the children can head up to the second floor to retrieve the dirty spittoon on the floor of the upper left bedroom [to use as a pot], but only Violet is tall enough to reach the screen [to use as a strainer] on the window in the adjacent second-floor bedroom [on the right]. Have either Violet or Klaus wash the dirty spittoon in the kitchen sink and then head over to the stove to prepare the Pasta Puttanesca. Any of the children can go to the dining room to inform Olaf that dinner is ready. -Chapter 3- Preparing for Peru The children are now in the home and care of Uncle Monty, a scientist fascinated by reptiles. Monty is about to embark on an expedition to Peru and would like the children to make snake traps while he's out. First, they'll need information on Peru and Peruvian Snakes. Send Klaus to the library [upper left room on the first floor] to examine the book about Peruvian snakes on the bookshelf to the left of the map. He'll learn that Peruvian snakes differ by region, so head over to the map to see if Uncle Monty has charted his course. Monty has marked the map, but in order to plot the course, Klaus will need a ruler. Send Sunny through door in the upper right of the Deadly Viper Room [top center room] to find a yardstick in the cabinet of the upper right room. She'll chew it down to ruler size! Klaus can then use the ruler to plot a course to Machu Picchu. Violet decides to build a wooden cage with a stick to hold the trap up and a rope net with a spring trigger. Start looking for the four snake trap components. Have Violet or Klaus pick up the wooden waste basket in the library, and then send Violet or Klaus to the kitchen [lower left room] to find a wooden spoon in the cabinet beneath the sink. Send Klaus or Violet to pry a loose spring off of the living room couch [the lower right room], and send Sunny into the Deadly Viper Room to retrieve the rope from the storage cabinet on the right side. She'll chomp it into small bits for the net! Violet will then create the snake trap. Now all they need is a snake to test it. The deadly viper in the central cage is frightened of Violet and Klaus, so send Sunny to sneak into the cage and catch him. -Chapter 4- The Wide Window Now the children are in the home and care of Aunt Josephine, a paranoid woman with a penchant for grammar. The children return home from the store and find Josephine missing, and the only response to Violet's calls is a whistling wind coming from the library. Send Violet or Klaus down the hallway to the right and enter the library through the door at the upper end to examine the broken window and find a piece of Josephine's dress. Then have Violet or Klaus read the note on the bookcase to the left of the window: "Dearest children, I cannot bear the bain of existence and have taken me own life. I have arranged to leaved you in the custody of Captain Sham..." Klaus finds the note odd and believes "bain" should be "pain". Violet also notes that "me" and "leaved" are used incorrectly and should be "my" and "leave". "Bain", "me", and "leaved" must be clues! The incorrect letters spell "BED", so the next place to look for a clue is beneath Josephine's bed [lower right room]. Sunny is the only one small enough to reach it. The second note reads: "My Life has become futile. One cannot live when One is only Killing time until the end." Klaus notes that "Become", "One", "One", and "Killing" are capitalised, spelling "BOOK". Send Violet to the living room [lower left room] bookshelf to find a note on the top shelf. It reads: "I cannot live without my dear Ike... skin... inks." Klaus assumes the words 'skin' and 'inks' are clues. If you rearrange the letters in both words, you can spell "SINK", so send Violet or Klaus to the kitchen sink for the next note. This note reads: "Well done, children! You'll find the final clue in a book named after a Greek Titan." Again, send either Violet or Klaus back to the library to examine the book on her desk, 'A Lachrymose Atlas'. -Chapter 5- The Marvelous Marriage Again, the Baudelaire children are back in the home of Count Olaf, who has decided to produce a play entitled 'The Marvelous Marriage'. On opening night, Olaf forces Violet to play the bride while he plays the part of the groom, and if Violet doesn't play along, Olaf will 'get rid of Sunny... forever', so it's up to Klaus to rescue them! Head left into the dining room and examine the big crack in the back wall before switching to Violet. Have Violet go left toward the small room with a bookcase and read the note about inheritance law. Then send her to the far right room and examine the big crack in the lower wall. She'll shout into the crack for Klaus to research inheritance law. Switch back to Klaus and examine the big crack again to hear Violet's message. Head down into the living room where he'll find a book on inheritance law in the bookcase in the upper right corner of the room! Klaus learns that Olaf is entitled to their fortune once he marries Violet, so rescue Sunny right away. Head upstairs to the third floor, where Sunny is imprisoned, and find the tower door locked! He'll have to find another way inside. Head back downstairs to the second floor and go left, into the bedroom. Examine the window, and Klaus is inspired to become the inventor in Violet's absence. With a grappling hook, he can reach the tower window. Start looking for a rope and a strong, robust hook. The candelabra in the bedroom will serve as a hook. After he has that, head toward the bathroom [upper right room on the floor] and take the shower curtain from the bathtub to use as a rope. Klaus will assemble the grappling hook with Violet-like precision! Head back to the bedroom window and toss the grappling hook, after which you'll find yourself inside the tower room but still outside of Sunny's prison cell. Have Klaus examine the bars and encourage her to chew through them. Switch to Sunny, and she'll have the confidence to chew through the bars with ease! Switch back to Klaus and examine the window in the back of Sunny's cell, where he can see the play taking place below... ...and enjoy the ending! =)
