"Townsmen" offers a complex construction and economic system reaching from resource extraction and processing to trade. Take up the challenge and turn a tiny fishermans cottage into an impressing port or convert a blacksmiths hut into a factory. Guide your few inhabitants step by step into becoming a real society, in which each member is an important part of the entire production chain. Turn basic timber cottages into a true empire! Regardless whether a hurricane has destroyed the sawmill or a thief has robbed the market make sure your Townsmen are safe! ___________________ / 1)Introduction \ / [Why?] \________________________________________________________ a. Why Write this Guide? Thank you for taking the time to look at my guide gamers and before I go into my main introduction I would like to thank HandyGames for producing a fine mobile game that I would describe as a pint-sized city builder. Despite the glaring omissions made in the production of the tutorials and the explanation of the menu system, which at first make this game quite impossible to grasp there is a fine experience to be had once the basics have been gotten out of the way. Taking into account what I have said above and the curious lack of a guide on the entire web I have decided too undertake writing my second game guide primarily for (gamefaqs.com). I will try to finish writing this guide as soon as physically possible taking into relation the fact I wish to make this guide quite concise. There is also the fact that I have not written a guide since 2003 when I wrote my first and I feel it is time to add something to the, Gamefaqs.com's community. I would also like to note that I am almost a Legend (That's a lot of Karma). ___________________ / 2)Getting Started \ / [Controls&Menus] \________________________________________________________ a. Controls One of the biggest inconveniences of Townsmen is that the menu system and controls are not clearly explained and concisely. Even the in-game diaries (tutorials) are not much help. Therefore before I start talking about game play strategy I will bring in the fundamentals. When you first start the Java Applet you will be faced with the flash page and the flashy Townsmen logo. After this you will be presented with a number of options. Continue **This is somewhat quite obvious** Start Game **This is somewhat quite obvious** Diary Movies This is the tutorial option but did not help me much, since it is poorly put together. I would recommend that you watch the diaries but that said it might only confuse you even more. On the other hand you may wish to play around with the game yourself first and then come-back and consult the guide for any points you are having problems with in the game-play. Highscore This tells you the highest value your town has achieved so far; as this indicates you may wish to restart the game once you have got all the basic down and out. There are also I number of goals/mission that you can aim for; personally I have played through four times with differing aims (more on this later). Setting Here you have the options to turn sound on or off and you can also set the auto save option, which I would advocate to all players. Help This is just a small text version and is even less help than the movie diaries put do look in here if you are interested. Info This will simply tell you that Townsmen was produced in late 2003 and is the property of HandyGames. Quit **This is somewhat quite obvious** (__) [##] /-------\/ / | || * ||----|| ^^ ^^ If you have decided to play Townsmen then reading on would be advisable by me since I would like people to read this guide and find it useful. (I need attention, mummy? mummy.. daddy? ? ?) At numerous points throughout the navigation of the menu you will see a tick and cross, these prompted actions can be decided by the keys directly below the symbols on your phone. This of course depends entirely on the phone you are using. Universal Controls Stick= Build menu 1 Timber Mill Information* 2 Wood Cutters Hut Information* 3 Smelting Building Information* (Turns Ores into Iron that is in-turn changed into tools) 4 Fishing Dwarf Information* (Catches fish dud..) 5 **Important** Market Square ? Here you can sell your wares for maintenance or to get the funds to upgrade buildings. 6 Tools Production* (Used to upgrade Building) 7 **Important** Labour allocation - You use this option to allocate workers to your different building 8 Wheat/Harvest Building Information* (Another source of food, only available later in the game) 9 Excavation Area Information* 0 Weekly Running costs Information *(Here you can determine need for maintenance (more later in the disaster section) b. building Information and what it means By Pressing the stick down or the button on your phone directly below the tool logo in the left-hand bottom corner on your phone you will get the menu, which is not explained in the game but below here: 1 Sawmill 4 Woodcutters Hut 7 Ore/Iron 2 Fishing 5 Market Square 8 Smelters 3 Housing 6 Harvesters 9 Brick/Rock c. Starting a settlement: Hints and Tips The first thing to do when starting your settlement is too built a ***fishing Dwarf***(2) and a ***Wood Cutter hut***(4). First built the Wood cutters Hut then after you have enough logs built the dwarf. Now you have the basic structure for the beginning of a fine town. Now if look at your town I read thus: 3 Smelters 6 Shapers 9 Rock/Brick excavation 2 Wood Cutters 5 Market Square 8 Harvesters Hut 1 Sawmill 4 Fishing 7 Living quarters/allocation Now at the moment you should have number two and four and that's all you need for the time being. If you press two and four you will get: Press Press 2 4 Log 1 Log 0 = The number of logs need every week for maintenance Money 5 Money 5 = The Gold cost of running and maintenance Now to confirm this press 0 on your phone to access your towns running costs: 1 Next to Picture of the logs you will see 1. 2 Next to the gold picture (bottom-right) you will see 10 *****what ever the numbers here you must always have these in the Market, always keep 1 wood and 10 Gold available. You can sell the rest for now. This will enable you to built up a lot of gold.**** Now that your town has built up a supply of wood and gold after say 400 days, yes 400 days you can start adding other chains of production depending the strategy to choose. ___________________________ /3)Controlling your Economy \ / [Fiscal Polcy&The Market] \________________________________________________ Fiscal or money management is very simple but also time consuming and needs concentration. Given any stage along the building availability chain only sell '5' above above the weekly maintainance rates '0'. This will enable to to make money by the bucket load. However that said, when it comes to food always maintain 2-3 times the level that is stated on the miantainance information '0'. '0' Maintainance '5' Market Square Stone 0 Ore 0 Stone 0 Ore 0 Wood 4 Iron 0 Wood 126 Iron 0 Timber 0 Tool 0 Timber 0 Tool 0 Food 5 Gold 15 Food 23 Gold 343 So therefore given the above information you can sell to the below levels:- '0' Maintainance '5' Market Square Stone 0 Ore 0 Stone 0 Ore 0 Wood 4 Iron 0 Wood 30 Iron 0 Timber 0 Tool 0 Timber 0 Tool 0 Food 5 Gold 15 Food 15 Gold 423 ___________________ /4)Worker Allocation\ / \________________________________________________________ Pressing 7 on you phone will enable you to allocate workers to different, the bottom-left icon controls the total number of workers. Select once and press up2or three times to bring in new workers to your town. But be careful not to outstrip you food production. There fore hire 1 new worker a time and see how it affects your food surplus. (Check this by looking at the summary costs '0' and food in the market square '5') _______________________ /5)Feeding your Townsmen\ / \____________________________________________________ Now using the method of selling only above your surplus (number '0' on your phone) you must first work throught the building structure since some materials are needed that cannot to gain early in the game. When you first start and build a Wood Cutters hut it will not take much time to get the 5 wood needed for the Fishing drawf, this provides your first source of food. I would reccomend two workers using the instructions in the basics section; after you have managed to get your dwarf up and established all the buildings in your community using the fiscal techiques in section three. Wood Cutter's Hut (2) (Wood) / \ / Fishing Dwarf (4) (W+Food) -_-_-_-> Point One \ Excavation (9) (WF+Stone) / Wood Cutters (1) (WFS+Timber) _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_|-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ | | | Harvest Hut (8) (WFST+wheat) Smelters (6) (WFSTW+Ore) Iron (3) (WFSTWO+Iron) ^ Point Two-_-_-_- ______________________________ /6)Daddy, where did I come from?\ / \____________________________________________ Just a small section to introduce people to the details of child-birth in Handy's Townsmen. Since there are only Townsmen if appears that the workers in the work have desended from plants. _____________________________________________________________________ / \ Abtract from **http://web.ukonline.co.uk/webwise/spinneret/pot/asex.htm** Asexual reproduction differs from sexual reproduction in that it does not require 2 parents, and that special cells are not required. This also means that the special mechanisms necessary to bring together sex cells, and permit fertilisation, then to support development of the fairly helpless stages, from zygote to independent organism, are not required. Although we often think of plants when we consider asexual reproduction, it must be remembered that there are many animals which reproduce asexually . The simplest organisms (Amoeba, bacteria, etc) may rely on asexual reproduction alone; but many organisms are able to use both methods, according to the requirements of their life-cycle. \_____________________________________________________________________/ So therefore there are some prominent errors in the game including the diet: 1) Meat and Fish should be replaced by sunlight 2) The game should be called TownsPlantMen 3) When you need a new worker,a current worker should go on leave for a week. Interesting musings... ... yes/no? ___________________ / 7)Disasters \ / \________________________________________________________ a. Plague This will take the form the grim reaper appearing in the bottom-right of the screen, a couple sometimes all of your workers wil be killed off. b. Theft If you are into the game enough this is not that important because in my experience I at a single time have had stolen: Day 789 20 Gold Day 1789 5 Tools Day 2318 5 Tools But if you running low and just been hit by the Grim Reaper then It could result in half your production chain falling down. c. Inefficiently You may be wondering what this means, well if you access the building info. E.g. Fishing dwarf you might get: Press 4 Bed Icon = Number of Workers 2 Fish Icon = 50/50 Now the 50/50 means that the hut/dwarf needs resting before it can work properly again. You may be thinking let it fall down and built it again but your other building may fall down at the same time. So the solution is too reduce the number of workers to 0 and hope that at the this stage you are harvesting wheat. This can happen to any building but in my experience is happens a lot more to the Fishing dwarf than your other building and can be a real pain. So just wait till it looks like (below) and then reallocate the workers. Press 4 Bed Icon = Number of Workers 0 Fish Icon = 0/50 This may result in your funds temporarily decreasing as you will have to buy food but it is necessary, ***so just hold out***. d. Flood/Hurricane This will result in either no harvesting food for a week or two; or a building falling down. A pain but rebuild the building and start trying to get those funds back. ___________________ /8)Codes and Cheats \ / \________________________________________________________ This game is produced for mobile phones and personally I think that it's a great game. Anybody who likes SimCity in its many incarnations will be fond of that fact that the pint-sized prehistoric version can be played on the go. However in my search around the information superhighway I have found no cheats to report to readers. This is however probably for the best since building games are more enjoyable when you do not cheat in any way; the game also lasts longer. ___________________ / 9)FAQ?s \ / \________________________________________________________ a. Requested ***None Received yet*** b. General Questions ***How do I transfer this game to my phone? If you have the file and a laptop a number of methods may be employed such as: 1) Infra Red 2) Blue Booth 3) Cable 4) UBS Transfer Dongle If you are ordering over the phone or internet it will be sent to you via SMS or an MMS, I am not quite sure but it is virtually always SMS. ***Does the game end? No, You can play forever if you wish. ***If I write a section will you add it? Yes, if it adds to the fullness of the guide. ***Building structure Order*** Wood Cutter's Hut (2) (Wood) | | Fishing Dwarf (4) (W+Food) | Excavation (9) (WF+Stone) | Wood Cutters (1) (WFS+Timber) ________________|________________________________ | | | Harvest Hut (8) (WFST+wheat) Smelters (6) (WFSTW+Ore) Iron (3) (WFSTWO+Iron) _________________________ /10)Reporting/Contact Info\ / & Disclaimer \__________________________________________________ a.
