This handy text document will tell you how to play this game, the game modes, and hints and tips. I am playing this game from the Activision Anthology on the PlayStation 2, and I am hoping that the version that I am using is the same as the normal one that was released. =============================================================================== TABLE OF CONTENTS =============================================================================== 1. Version History 2. Game Overview 3. Hints and Tips 4. Conclusion and Special Thanks =============================================================================== 1. VERSION HISTORY =============================================================================== Version 1.1 - 11/06/2004 ------------------------ Updated the FAQ with a less bulky format, which lessons the FAQ size. Version 1.0 - 13/02/2004 ------------------------ The first complete version of this FAQ. Everything is complete. =============================================================================== 2. GAME OVERVIEW =============================================================================== This section is just a look over all things in the game, such as how to play it, the two different game modes and the controls. Game Types ---------- There are ten game types available, and two game modes. Each game mode has five games. Slalom Runs - Game 1 - 20 Gates (Novice Run) Game 2 - 40 Gates (Intermediate Run) Game 3 - 30 Gates (Expert Run) Game 4 - 50 Gates (Olympic Run) Game 5 - 30 Games (Random) Downhill Runs - Game 6 - 200 Meters (Novice Run) Game 7 - 300 Meters (Intermediate Run) Game 8 - 500 Meters (Expert Run) Game 9 - 900 Meters (Olympic Run) Game 10 - 900 Meters (Random) The differences between the Slalom and Downhill runs are explained in the appropriate sections ahead. Remember that the games 1-4 and 6-9 are preset, and games 5 and 10 are random. You can repeat a random one by making sure that you don't change the game, and just reset instead. There are two difficulty settings also; however they different for the two game modes (slalom and downhill). Again, check the appropriate sections for these. Controls -------- Joystick - Move Skier Fire Button - Jump (Downhill Racing only) Note that the Up and Down directions on the Joystick has no effect on the game. The Jump is only available in Downhill Racing; its use is explained in the appropriate section, which is coming up... later. Basic Movement -------------- There are different angles that you can point the skier toward during play. This goes from straight down vertically, up to straight across horizontally. To gain the maximum speed, then head straight downward. As you turn across through the different angles, your speed will decrease. When you are going horizontally across, then you will slow down to a crawl. A very slow crawl. I would only do this when you need to stop dead quick (eg. when there is a tree/gate in your face). Slalom Racing (Games 1-5) ------------------------ The objective in this mode is to go through all the gates (two poles is a gate; go in-between them) in the quickest time possible. The amount of gates that remain is above your timer, at the top of the screen. The last gate is red, whereas normal gates are coloured blue. You will get penalised 5 seconds for every gate you miss. The penalty will not take effect until the end of the game, where all the penalties are added and taken off your time. You will not receive penalties for hitting trees or gates; just an expected loss of time. Difficulty A - Gate's clear Difficulty B - Trees placed in front of gates Downhill Racing (Games 6-10) ---------------------------- The objective is to reach the bottom of the slope in the fastest possible time. The remaining amount of meters is above your timer, at the top of the screen. There are no penalties here; you just lose if you screw up (eg. hitting a tree or falling over a mogul). In this game, the Fire button is used to jump. You need to jump over moguls (the grey patches of snow) otherwise you fall over them and make a right tit of yourself. Jump just before you touch them, and you should be fine. Also, there is a gimmick that you can jump when you are lying on the snow. ;D Difficulty A - Moguls need to be manually jumped over Difficulty B - Moguls are automatically jumped over =============================================================================== 3. HINTS AND TIPS =============================================================================== • PRACTICE!! Obviously. The best games to start with are 1 and 2 for the Salam racing, and game 6 for the Downhill racing. These are the slowest games, thus are better for learning how the game operates. • Travel down the slope horizontally as much as possible. This way you gain a faster time. However don't be afraid to turn; its better to turn and slow down to avoid things rather than crashing into them and wasting even more time starting up again. • Look down the screen ahead to see what is coming. • On the Slalom racing, take the inside routes as much as possible (most of the time you can guess the location of the next gate). • When you think you are getting good, then change the difficulty for a tougher challenge. =============================================================================== 4.
