UPDATES ---------------- Sunday, May 16, 2010, 8:10:09 PM - I am getting rather annoyed now. This is the third time I've had to write this guide from scratch. My computer suddenly shut down without warning. Monday, May 17, 2010, 5:13 PM – I fixed this guide up a bit and I might add a few more cutscenes in the near future. Tuesday, May 18, 2010, 1:30 PM - I revised this entire Guide and made some minor changes. one or two more cut scenes were added. A few spelling errors were also fixed. Now this guide is completely done. May 18, 2010, 1:52 PM - I added some questions to the FAQ section. Those are questions that I often asked my uncle when he played the game years ago. I also fixed up some information about the game too. This really is done. And I mean completely done. - I added a new section to give everyone a preview of other games I’m writing guides for. November 11, 2010, 1:44 AM – I added a new section containing my favorite quotes from this game, ran a spell check for the guide, and updated my contact information. But other than that, nothing new is added to the walkthrough itself. November 12, 2010, 6:00 Am-11:17 AM – I redid the whole walkthrough so that everyone can get through the game faster, ran another spell check on the entire guide, and added more quotes to the quotes sections. I think this is the final version, unless I replay the game a tenth time and decide to add more quotes. - Added more characters to the character list and this entire document mounts up to 4848 words. Thursday, February 24, 2011 9:41PM – no new major updates this time around. All I did was run another spell check and fixed a few spelling errors, though it took me at least twenty minutes to go through this entire guide. ----------------------------- II. ABOUT THIS GAME ----------------------------- Day of the Tentacle is the sequel to Maniac Mansion. It was released in 1993 for the PC. Like its predecessor, it is a point and click game. -------------- III. STORY -------------- After the events of Maniac Mansion, the Edisons had turned their home into a seedy motel to make ends meet. After drinking some toxic waste, Purple Tentacle begins a quest for world domination. Bernard, and his two new friends, Hoagie and Laverne, receive a message from Green Tentacle. They soon find themselves returning to the Edison mansion once more. ----------------------- IV. CHARACTERS ----------------------- Key Characters Bernard Bernouli - The returning nerd from the original game. He must find a way to bring his friends back to the present, and stop the Purple Tentacle--even if it means pushing a few old ladies down the stairs. Hoagie - Bernard's little roadie of a rocker friend. He is part of a rock band (or is it a heavy metal band?). He gets sent back to the Colonial Days, 200 years in the past. Laverne - Bernard's loopy lady friend, who is obsessed with wanting to dissect animals. She takes dissectomy lab at the local college. Laverne gets sent 200 years into the future, where the world is ruled by Tentacles. The Edison Family Dead Cousin Ted - Everyone's favorite mummy who once resided in the bathroom. He now stands outside, holding a bird bath. Dr. Fred - Once under the Meteor's control, Dr. Fred now spends his time inventing things and trying to keep his family from going into the poor house. He is obsessed with drinking coffee. Dr. Red Edison - Dr. Fred's ancestor. He is an inventor and seems to have a rivalry with Ben Franklin. The Future Edison Family - The descendants of the Edisons. They are trapped in the kennel in the future and are afraid of skunks. They seem to think that Dr. Fred and his family are a disgrace to the Edison Family. Green Tentacle - Dr. Fred's pet. He owns a band called Green T and the Sushi Platter. He is deathly afraid of Purple Tentacle. Ned and Jed - Sons of Red Edison. They have a huge interest in sculpting and other art. Nurse Edna - Dr. Fred's wife. She watches over the security monitors. Purple Tentacle - Dr. Fred's other pet. He wants revenge against all of humanity and to have world domination. Weird Ed - Dr. Fred's son. He traded his army commando obsession for collecting stamps. Other Characters Ben Franklin - Also known as Benjamin Franklin. Ben is flying a kite in attempts of discovering electricity. George Washington - The father of our nation. In this game, he has a passion for smoking cigars and cutting down cherry trees. John Hancock - Another of the Founding Fathers. He can be found shivering and wants nothing more than a fire in the fire place. Thomas Jefferson - Another of the Founding Fathers. He is making a time capsule that will be unveiled 400 years from the Colonial Days. The Maid - George Washington's maid that mistakes Hoagie for George Washington. Betsy Ross - The designer of the American Flag. She seems to tire of all the rapid changes in the designs of the flags. The Novelty Salesman - He loves a good joke and oddly, he resembles Ben Franklin. Kennel Gaurd - He guards the kennel in the future. Pageant Official - He hates humans, but yet he's in charge of the beauty pageant. Pageant Judges - They judge the pageant contestants. Harold - He is the wierdo with the blue hair. He is sure to win this year's pageant. The IRS - Two men who come after Dr. Fred for skipping out on taxes. Man in the Ski Mask - He's trying to break into an old car for some odd reason. The Hamster - Unlike Wierd Ed's last hamster, this one isn't fated to being toasted to death in the microwave. Lucky him. The Horse - A talking horse with dentures. Must be one of Dr. Red's experiments. Sleeping Fat Man - A guest at the hotel that sleeps and snores. Dwayne - A novelty salesman that wants to commit suicide by shooting himself...with a toy gun. Hunter Tentacle - Well, I guess you can call him a warden. He gaurds the entrance to Dr. Fred's lab in the future. Dr. Tentacle - Self-explanitory. -------------------------- V. FAQ ----------- 1. Which items are completely useless and which items aren’t? Answer: The only useless items are the gum and the right-handed hammer. 2. What is the purpose of changing the statues and the twins? Answer: Actually, I don’t really know. All I can figure out is that switching the left-handed hammer for the right handed hammer is to change the statue. I guess it’s for laughs and humor? 3. Help! I can’t switch Ted with Dr. Fred. What should I do? Answer: Use the red paint on Ted before switching him out with Dr. Fred. 4. I can’t get Edna to leave the room! Every time I push her out, she bounces back in, knocking over Bernard! What did I do wrong? Answer: it might be too early in the game. You have to have the video tape and you have to talk to her a bit. Dr. Fred also needs to be in his office, sleep walking. It might help if you had switched the twins’ hammers to change the statue in her room as well. 5. How do I open the safe in Dr. Fred’s Office? Answer: You have to record Dr. Fred opening the safe for the combination, and then replay it in EP, not SP. 6. Where is the secret lab? Answer: in the grandfather clock. 7. What is EP and SP? Answer: EP is Extended Play, and SP is Short Play. ------------------------------------------------------------ VII. Should I take off my clothes now?” -Hoagie “We need a babe in a leather clad bikini, swinging a broadax.” –Hoagie “The question is, which one’s stuffed and which one’s the real McCoy?” –Hoagie “Sounds like the cat’s caught a moose up there.” –Jed “He’s going to give the log to starving children?” –Hoagie “I can’t stand coffee. It makes me irritable and bang my head against the walls.” –John Hancock “Alright, a friend once told me that women go crazy over men with a big signature.” –John Hancock “A real man is warmed by the fire of his spirit.” –Thomas Jefferson (this isn’t a funny quote, but it is definitely a good quote) “Well, later dude.” “What? What’s going to happen later?” –Hoagie & Thomas Jefferson “Get me out of here! I like trees and everything, but this one has got to go.” –Laverne “Do you ever inhale flies when you snore like that?” –Bernard “Why the litter box? Have you got a cat?” “Don’t ask.” –Bernard and Green Tentacle “Laverne, how’d you get upstairs?” “Am I upstairs? I got lost.” “Did you see any tentacles?” “What’s a tentacle?” –Hoagie and Laverne “Bernard, float over here so I can punch you.” –Hoagie “What could it all mean?” “I don’t know, I don’t wanna know.” –Hoagie & Bernard “We might not live to see yesterday.” “I’m sure Dr. Fred wouldn’t have sent us if it weren’t safe.” “After all, he IS a doctor.” –Hoagie, Laverne, and Bernard. “Oh, right. I forgot. He’s incredibly evil, isn’t he?” -Bernard “What harm can one insane tentacle do?” -Bernard “You mean horses have been snubbing me my whole life?” -Hoagie “Ted is red. See red Ted.” -Bernard “Hey, sonny, you missed the party!” “You and the clown were having a party?” -Bernard and the Novelty Cigar Salesman “My pony express stamps! You’ve ruined my Pony Express stamps, not to mention five years of therapy! Get out!” -Weird Ed “Sometimes I do stupid stuff. As if my brain is controlled by some dementive being.” “Well, we all feel that way sometimes.” -Bernard and Weird Ed “Excuse me.” “What is it—Say, aren’t you Bernard Bernoulli?” “Yes, that’s right.” “I knew it! You broke into our mansion a few years ago to save your little friend. What have you come here for this time?” “It’s a secret.” “A secret, eh? Well, I won’t rat you out, hot stuff! Ehehehe!” -Bernard and Nurse Edna “Come back anytime, you big hunk! Eehehehe!” -Nurse Edna “Yoohoo, Mr. Tentacle Guy.” “What?” “Get me out of here! This is a violation of my rights!” “Rights? You’re a human, you don’t have any rights.” -Laverne and the Tentacle Guard “Damn that Dr. Fred.” “Hm? She knows the family motto.” -Laverne and Zed Edison “What do we have here?” “I feel pukey.” “Well then, hold still.” “Are you going to use your scalpel?” “Of course not.” “Darn.” -Dr. Tentacle and Laverne “You’re free!” “Free? To do what?” “To run wild in the woods like humans should.” “Big deal.” -Laverne and Zed “Well, you know what they say. If you’ve got to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.” -Bernard ------------------------ IX..
