I decided to write this guide for 2 reasons. 1. The total war series is my favorite strategy game of all time. 2.there aren't many other places to find help for these battles and I know from personal experience that the scenerio battles can be hard at times. _____________________________________________________________________________ / \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Tips and Strategies [TA02]---------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \_____________________________________________________________________________/ The following is list of basic tips and tricks that you should always keep in mind while playing. I will not be stating these later as I am assuming that you have already read this list. 1)Morale has a giant effect on the course of a battle. Unlike previous total war games units can and will route only after loosing 10 or so men. Along with this, one routing unit can cause a full unit to route that hasn't even been to combat. Because of this. Cavalry charges and surrounding your army are even more crucial to winning a battle. Likewise, preventing these things from happening to your men can mean the difference between winning and loosing a battle. 2)Sick Units. Units that have only twenty or thirty percent of their men left are likely to route at the slightest conflict with enemy units. When a unit routes nearby friendly units are likely to to loose morale and route as well. Because of this I refer to these units as sick units, for their ability to spread a illness throughout your army. As such, between battle you should move these units to the edges of the battle field to prevent them from ruining the morale of the rest of your men. You should be aware that this does not apply to archers and cavalry. 3)Keep your general alive and close. Like previously stated, morals plays a huge role and loosing your general will deal a devastating blow to your army. Your general should always be next to your main line. When attacking the walls of a castle your general shoulfd dismount and follow the rest of your army up the walls after your army has cleared out the main force in the first set of walls. 4)Katana Infantry>Cavalry>Spear Infantry>Katana Infantry This is the basic chain that the game operates under. Try to avoid any conflicts where your men are at a disadvantage. Katana infantry will hack down spear infantry and spear ingantry will cut down any cavalry in their way, 5)Basic formation. Throughout this guide I will tell you to form your men "into formation". When I say this I am referring to a basic 3 line formation. The first line made of spear infantry, the second of Katana infantry, and a third and final line consisting of archers plus your general. Your cavalry can either be on the flank or directly behind your army depending on the formation of the enemy army. When the enemy attacks you need to move your Katana infantry from the second line to the front to reinforce where other infantry are attacking. 6)One first for this game is the ability to dismount cavalry. If you find yourself short on infantry during a siege then you can dismount your men and have them move up the wall with the rest of your normal infantry. Note that the horses will not follow them and the soldiers will have to run all the way back to the horses if they wish to remount. 7)Never leave Cavalry in combat for to long especially against spearmen. So charge the flanks of the enemy soldiers then if they don't mediately route pull your horses out and then charge them again. 8)Archers can work as melee units if you are running low on infantry. 9)Always keep your general out of danger. If your general dies you will automatically lose the battle. 10)Never charge cavalry in to spear men head on! Allways attack from spearmen from the flank. Even if you outnumber them 2 to 1 they will still cause many casualties if you charge them while they are facing you. 11)You can pause the game and still order your troops. This will let you make better decisions because you won't be under pressure. 12)Do not chase routing units unless the battle is very close to being over because in a lot of these battles every single unit needs to be used to the best of its ability for you to win. _____________________________________________________________________________ / \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------The Battle of Kawanakajima [TK03]------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \_____________________________________________________________________________/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us0nd3Vn8P0 Units: General: Uesugi Kenshin General's bodyguard x1 Katana Cavalry x2 Uesugi Warrior Monks x2 Katana Samurai x5 Yari Ashigaru x6 Uesugi Matchlock Warrior Monks x2 Bow Samurai x1 Uesugi Bow Warrior Monks x1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General: Takeda Shingen General's Bodyguard x1 Bow Ashigaru x7 Yari Ashigaru x5 Katana Samurai x4 Yari Cavalry x1 Bow Cavalry x1 Katana Cavalry x1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is probably the easiest battle of the game. The enemy army is split into two parts and you have plenty of team to defeat the first before fighting the second. The first army consists of several units of archers along with one unit of spear and one unit of katana infantry Along with a unit of general's bodyguards. The second army will show up in about 6 minutes after the battle starts. At the start of the battle you will have to deal with the first enemy army. The first thing you need to do is pull the two units of spear infantry from the right flank over to the main army. Move forward with all of your infantry and have each unit target either a unit of archers or a unit of infantry. If you want, you can have you cavalry attack the archers that are not close to the enemy infantry. Remember to notattack the Katana infantry with spear infantry. Flank the enemy units with your cavalry to speed up the process. Make sure that your infantry doesn't stay in combat for to long with enemy infantry. With the first army defeated you can move onto the second part of this battle. First thing you need to do is get rid of any sick units by sending them to the far corners of the battlefield away from your army. Form your army into the normal 3 line formation and face the oncoming army. Make sure that the matchlock soldiers are at the front and that you don't stretch your army out to far. The enemy army will usually open with a cavalry charge. If you have a front line of spear infantry, like you should always have, then the charge will be ineffective and the cavalry will route. Now just fight the enemy army like any other battle. Move the katana infantry to the front as the line gets attacked and flank the enemy army with the cavalry as needed. With the superior numbers of your army the enemy soldier will route quickly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us0nd3Vn8P0 _____________________________________________________________________________ / \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------The Battle of Okehazama [Ok04]--------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \_____________________________________________________________________________/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ4J8VQ9EcM Units: General: Oda Nobunaga General's Bodyguard x1 Katana Cavalry x3 Yari Cavalry x2 Yari Ashigaru x6 Katana Samurai x5 Bow Ashigaru x3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General: Katana Samurai x5 Yari Cavalry x2 Yari Ahigaru x4 Bow Ashigaru x4 Katana cavalry x4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is definitely the most unusual battle in all of the total war games. Along with being the strangest battle is also one of the easiest. For the first half of the battle you will only have control of your cavalry. Your first job will be to eliminate the patrols surrounding the camps. If your attacking katana infantry then you should lead with the yari cavalry, if they are cavalry then lead with katana cavalry, and if they are yari infantry then you should dismount you cavalry and then attack them on foot. Make sure that enemy soldiers don't get near your horses or else they will get scared and run away. Once the patrols have been eliminated the attack will begin. One half of the enemy army will stay at the north of the camp at all times. SO, you will only have to deal with the soldiers on the lower half of the camp. Split your army into 2 parts. Each part should have a equal amount of spear and katana infantry. Send one hald down the left of the camp and the send the other down the right side of the camp. Your objective is to get to the tent at the center of the camp and hold it for 1 minute. Move your cavalry around the flank the enemy forces and make your way to the center. Watch for archers on the far edge of the camp. Also, if a enemy unit is not attacking you then you should not attack them. By the time you reach the center of the camp the soldiers in the upper half of the camp will take no notice to you and you will be able to wait out the one minute in peace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ4J8VQ9EcM _____________________________________________________________________________ / \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------The Battle of Sekigahara [SE05]-------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \_____________________________________________________________________________/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvpIF63L2Zk Units: General: Ishida Mitsunari General's Bodyguard x1 Katana Cavalry x5 Katana Samurai x4 Yari Ashigaru x5 Bow Ashigaru x5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General: Shimazu Yoshihiro General's Bodyguard x1 Katana Cavalry x2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General: Tokugawa Katana Samurai x7 General's Bodyguard x1 Matchlock Samurai x4 Yari Ashigaru x4 Yari Cavalry x2 Bow Ashigaru x2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General: Kobayakawa Hideaki General's Bodyguard x1 Katana Samurai x2 Yari Ashigaru x1 Naginata Samurai x3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is probably the hardest land battle in the entire game. Before we start you should know that your allies with the large army will betray you half way through the battle and that your allies with the all cavalry army will not fight at any point during the battle unless they are attacked by enemy troops. I will go into more detail later. The trick to winning this battle is forming your army into the correct formation in the correct spot. Where you army is currently located leaves your army vulnerable to being flanked and as such we will be relocating. Move your ENTIRE army over to where your cavalry allies are located (don't forget the infantry by your allies). Form your army into the basic three line formation with your left flank to the river and the right flank to the rocks. To the left of your amry you should notice a river crossing. Move one unit of katana infantry to block one side of the crossing along with unit of archers. In the process of moving your army to the next location the enemy cavalry will attack. Make sure that you have your spear infantry to welcome them and then have your cavalry finish them off. Put your spear infantry into yari wall formation stand ready. The enemy army will start by moving up with two units of matchlock infantry. Move up your cavalry and run them down. Quickly move them back behind your line before they become ingulfed the enemy army. This next part will make this battle a lot easier to win if you can pull it off. Several enemy units will down the river to your left but only 2 units will go across the river crossing. The other units will skip the crossing and move behind your army. Once your katana infantry has delt with the first two units then you need to quickly move them up the hill and place them next to your cavalry allies. What this will do is make the enemy troops move through your allies and cause them to attack the enemy army. This next part will happen while the events in the last paragraph are taking place so you will have to do some multi tasking. The main force of the enemy army will hit the front ranks of your army. Move up the katana infantry to wherever the enemy katana infantry are attacking. After playing this battle four times the enemy soldiers will only attack the right half of your line. Move the rest of the infantry on the left side and have them surround the enemy troops. Make sure to only do this after the majority of the enemy troops have already engaged your men. Move your general close to your men to stop routing and have all of your cavalry flank the enemy army. It should only take one good charge from your cavalry and your allies to route the enemy army. At this point the second enemy army will be heading towards you so there will be no time to rest your men. You need to quickly form your army into back into formation to the receive the enemy army. This army is much smaller then the other army and by now you should have your allies to help surround them. Have all of your archers fire into their ranks and use your cavalry to bash the enemy flanks. A mass route will finish off the enemy army. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvpIF63L2Zk _____________________________________________________________________________ / \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------The Battle of Anegawa [AN06]---------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \_____________________________________________________________________________/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvMBOT5mHU8 Units: General: Tokugawa Leyaso Generals Bodyguard x1 Yari Cavalry x1 Katana Cavalry x1 Katana Samurai x2 Naginata Samurai x2 Yari Samurai x1 Yari Samurai x1 Yari Ashigaru x2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General: Oda Nobunago Generals Bodyguard x1 Matchlock Ashigaru x1 Bow Ashigaru x1 Yari Ashigaru x7 Yari Samurai x4 Katana Samurai x2 Light cavalry x2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General: Asakuro Yoshikage (Force inside the castle). This is the first battle in total war history where you have allies that are actually usefull. The first half of this battle will take place on the river and the second half will be on the castle above. Your AI allies are total idiots and as such you will have to finish off the army across from you as quickly as possible and then swing your army over to help out your allied army. Eighty percent of the enemy army is spear infantry so your katana infantry are vital to winning this battle. Move up your army to the bank of the river but don't cross yet. Move your archers to the front and have them target the enemy line. After one or tow vollies the enemy army will charge across the river towards. (Anyone else find it strange that all of the rivers in Japan are only two feet deep?) Your katana infantry will shred the enemy infantry in no time at all. Make sure that your katana infantry don't chase after the routing units as there are two units of hidden cavalry in the forest on the other side fo the river that will attack if any of your infantry attempt to cross the river. Once the army has been defeated move across the river with your spearmen leading the way. Kill of the enemy cavalry and then turn your army to assist your allies. Use your cavalry to charge down the archers and then quickly divert them to flank the infantry attacking your men. Move in the rest of your men to finish off the enemy army. Now we will move into stage two of the battle. As long as your allies have at least two hundred men remaining then you should be just fine. Move up your army to the to the castle walls but keep your men out of the range of the enemy archers. Dismount your cavalry (including your general). You can attempt to go up the walls directly in front of you but I would recommend against it as the enemy archers have a high chance to causing a mass route amongst your men. Instead we will go up the same wall as our allies. Let the allied troops lead the way and then head up the walls. Make sure that your general goes last. Capture the gates and then let the rest of your men in. Move up the final wall and capture the castle to end the battle. This should be a really easy battle as the enemy army only has one unit of archers and the rest are just spearmen. Along with that you will outnumber them two to one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvMBOT5mHU8 _____________________________________________________________________________ / \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------The Battle of Kizagawaguchi [KZ07]------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \_____________________________________________________________________________/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRUFkaJrlhk Units: Admiral: Murakami Takayoshi Heavy Bune x2 Fire BOmb bune x2 Medium Bune x2 Bow Kobaya x3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Admiral: Kuki Yoshitaka O Ataka Bune x6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naval battles are not my area of expertise and as such the following strategy relies quite a bit on luck and will only work about six times out of ten. If you have a more reliable strategy then please give me a e-mail at ratlips24@aol.com. If you look at the lower left corner of the map you will notice two small islands. This is where our fleet will make there stand against the onslaught of the enemy fleet. This strategy will exploit a kind of bug in the path finding of the AI. Before we start the battle I would like to go over the units in your fleet and the importance and strategies associated with each unit. The first and most important unit in your fleet are the fire bomb ships. These ships have almost no range but will cause an enemy ship ship to route in 2-3 vollies of bombs. One major down side is that the enemy ships will prioritize these guys and it only takes one to two vollies of enemy gun fire to route your ships. If these ships route before the majority of the enemy ships have been destroyed then it will be impossible for you to win this battle. Do to all of these factors you will have to engage with your other ships and then come from behind with the fire bomb ships. The three light ships will also route in a few volleys so it is best that these guys stay in the back and attack the enemy ships from the flanks. Make sure to use these ships fire arrow ability whenever available, which is every minute. The last two kinds of ships in your fleet are the medium and heavy ships. These ships are the strongest and the most durable. Make sure to use these guys to divert the enemy fire from the fire bomb ships. You should take note that in the event of a boarding action these ships will almost always win against any one of the enemy ships as long as they are alone. The Key to making this plan work is the mines that the bomb ships can place. If you look to the right of the screen after clicking on a bomb shp you will notice a panel with deplorable defenses. Clicking on this will cause the ship to deploy a bomb from the back of the ship. Note that the mines WILL be triggered by your own ships. Now let's get to the actual battle. The first thing we need to do is move your fleet behind the two islands in the corner of the map. Form a line consisting of your heavy and medium ships. Form a line perpendicular to the small island on the right consisting of your light ships. While you ships are in the process of moving through the islands you will need to place a line of mines with both of your fire bomb ships. Make sure that there are no large gaps in the line and that none of the mines overlap as you will need all of the mines in order to block off the pass. If done correctly this will mess with the path finding of the AI. Here is a really crappy diagram of how your fleet should be set up. E= enemy ships L= Land mass M= mines SB= you light ships MB= Your medium ships HB= your heavy ships FB= your fire bomb ships E E E E E E LLL L LLLLL LLLL L L L L L LLLLLL LL L M M M M LL LL LL L M M LL L LLLLLLLL LL L LLLL SB MB MB HB HB SB SB FB FB This may take a few trys to do correctly but if it is done correctly then the enemy fleet should come through the pass one at a time. Even if they come through two at a time you should still be able to defeat the enemy army. But, if they come all at once through the pass then this strategy will not work and you will have to restart the battle and set up everything all over again. While the enemy ships start to make their way through the mines you should have you light ships barage the them with fire arrows and then the normal arrows. If done correctly, the enemy ships will come through the pass in groups of either one or two. Move in your heavy and medium ships to intercept the enemy vessels. If more then one ship is moving through the pass then you need to wait for them to come through. Once you see an opening between when a ship came through and when another starts to come through it will be time for you to move in with your fire bomb ships. Remember to have them attack the enemy ships from behind and when they are already targeting one of your other ships. When the the ships routes you need to quickly divert your ship to target the other enemy ships. Remember to have your ships shoot their fire arrows whenever they are available. Continue doing this until you win the battle. If you loose both of your fire omb ships before the at least four of the enemy ships route then you might as well restart, as it is very hard to win this battle without these ships. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRUFkaJrlhk _____________________________________________________________________________ / \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------The Battle of Nagashino [NA08]------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \_____________________________________________________________________________/ Since I'm a cheapskate I do not own the limited edition version of this game and as such I do not own this historical battle.
