Introduction II. Strategy III. Other stuff IV. Guide info ############################################################################### I. INTRODUCTION ############################################################################### ===== Story ===== The opening cinematic of the game describes the storyline quite well: "This is the story of a boy. Some called it a curse and others called it a blessing. On the borders of a sunny forest, far away, there he was, our little boy. As he went along, he suddenly noticed a basket full of delicious muffins. 'What a feast I shall have!' he thought to himself. But as soon as he touched a muffin in the basket, it all flew up, throwing every little muffin way up high in the sky. From the bushes, an old fairy hobbled out. 'All my magic muffins gone! Now a knight you shall become! To be yourself again make haste; go find me all my precious cakes. You may search far, both west and east, but be quicker than the ravenous beasts.' And so his journey began. The journey of the Muffin Knight!" ======== Gameplay ======== In short: grab the muffins and try not to die by avoiding/killing enemies. You begin as a Knight. Each time you get a muffin, you become a different character. You'll turn into any of the other characters you've unlocked (with the exception of the Crazy Bull). Try to get as many muffins as you can! ======== Controls ======== The controls are given on screen and in a tutorial. There are buttons to move left and right, a button to jump, and a button to use the player's attack. When you unlock the Slow Time perk, a button appears for that as well. If you so desire, you can move these on-screen buttons around in the game's settings. ############################################################################### II. STRATEGY ############################################################################### There exist many strategies that are agnostic to characters and levels. I outline some below: * Enemies aren't a priority; just go for the muffins. Each enemy gives anywhere between 1 and 4 XP, where each muffin gives 30. You should only kill enemies when it keeps you from the muffins. The only exception is when you're trying to become the Crazy Bull. * Muffins will usually appear as far from you as possible. For example, if you grab a muffin at the bottom-left of the level, another is likely to appear at the top-right. * The bottom-most platform is often the safest place to be. * Sometimes, it's worth using a character's power before you grab a muffin. As Mr. Rainbow, for example, I always use his rainbow before I grab my next muffin. * Unlocking new characters isn't too tough; it might take awhile if you can't get a lot of muffins in one round, but if you play on the easiest level over and over again, you'll eventually get all of them. * Invest 20 points in the extra lives. They're incredibly helpful. I'd also recommend fully upgrading Crazy Bull because it makes a big difference. The perks aren't particularly exciting, in my opinion. ============================= Character-specific strategies ============================= There are a total of 18 different unlockable characters. They are listed below in order of when they're unlocked. * Knight Pretty useless. Not that powerful, as far as I can tell. When I get control of the Knight, I just try to get the next muffin so that I don't have to be the Knight anymore. I wouldn't spend points on this one. * Gnome A personal favorite. The Gnome's shotgun is quite powerful. Take advantage of its high point-blank power. * Mage Hold Fire to continuously shoot fairly powerful bullets. Don't tap it fast -- I did that for awhile and realized that it was tiring and less effective. Just hold it. Not a terrible misapplication of points, but it's not awful. Also, keep in mind that each shot fired bumps the Mage in the opposite direction ever so slightly, which can eventually send you into a pit. * Archer The Archer is effective against weaker enemies, and because he shoots in both directions, you can destroy many of them. * Unicorn I hope this is the only time someone gives you this advice: poop everywhere. The Unicorn's "land mines" are pretty powerful, so lay as many as you can before you have to get the next muffin. I'd level the Unicorn up at least once. * Pumpking The Pumpking throws his head and lets it roll. This is effective when trying to kill weaker enemies. Stand at the "top" of a level and let his head roll down, destroying the enemies below. Don't get hit by your own head, or you'll be temporarily disabled. * Dragon The Dragon's fire breath isn't particularly powerful, so it won't save you at a very close range. But if there's a row of enemies and you've a bit of distance, kill them with the dragon. * Grizzly Can attack through floors, which comes in handy. It's also a fairly powerful attack but not hugely so. * Ninja Kitty Worth upgrading, in my opinion; makes the shurikens much more powerful. * Cyclops A personal favorite -- every time you hit anything, it'll create a black hole for a short time and "eat" most everything that touches it. But for the Cyclops's slightly long fire rate, it's excellent. Worth upgrading. * Zombie Not a big fan of the Zombie; not particularly powerful and has a huge knockback. Only effective when you're against a wall and you are facing an advancing line of weaker enemies. * Sumo Panda I find it difficult to get kills with the Sumo Panda, but it has a very useful perk: while you're body-slamming, you're invincible. You can use it to "skip over" rows of enemies. * Monkey The Monkey's banana hits the edge of the level and then bounces back. Very useful when you have a line of weak enemies, or want to hit a tougher enemy twice. Be careful not to be hit by your own banana; you'll be temporarily disabled. * Bird The Bird's eggs are quite powerful. When you upgrade, you throw more eggs at once -- I think it's worth it to upgrade and get more eggs. * Frog The Frog is good at dealing with the fairly-common line of weaker enemies. It's got a very long tongue (and does damage slightly farther than it sticks out on the screen). * Mr. Rainbow Mr. Rainbow's power kills everything on the screen -- make sure you fire it before you transform again. Mr. Rainbow is among the most useful. Not really worth upgrading, though. * Yeti The Yeti is really only effective to freeze enemies temporarily. It can do that quite well, but killing enemies is tough. * Crazy Bull Unlike all the others, Crazy Bull is activated after you kill a certain number of enemies (the amount decreases as you upgrade it). Once you have, you're invincible for a short time. I don't recommend using this to kill enemies; rather, just go get the muffins. Depending on how much you've upgraded it, you can snag many muffins as the bull. ========================= Level-specific strategies ========================= Most of the levels are fairly similar so there's not much strategy, but here's what I have: * Bridge Simplest stage. It's a pretty easy one, so I recommend using this to unlock all of the characters if you're having trouble collecting the number of muffins you need on other levels. I wouldn't play it after that, though, because half of your XP is taken away. * Forest I don't have much to say about this level, except that I don't enjoy it. * Graveyard Take advantage of the warps on either side of the stage. You can "camp out" by them and when things get tough, run through the warp. * Windmill My least favorite. It's difficult to jump from platform to platform quickly. The multiplier on this stage isn't high enough that it's worth spending too much time on this stage. * Castle I'd say that this level is among the easiest, actually, and because of its fairly high multiplier, it's worth it! * Ghost Town My personal favorite. It's got a big enough multiplier that it's a good deal and it's easier than the two stages after it. The bottom platform is the safest place to stop if you're worried. * Santaville Grab the presents and put them in the chimney. * Lava Land This level is among the hardest simply because of the boulders that constantly rain down. They can be destroyed but don't count on it too much unless you damage them greatly. It's probably safest at the bottom-most platform because enemies and boulders can't double back as much. This level gets so hectic on upper floors that I'd recommend camping at the bottom and building up your Crazy Bull meter by killing enemies, then grabbing as many muffins as you can before it runs out. ======================== Perk-specific strategies ======================== ############################################################################### III.
