Ares Guide This is my second FAQ ever made (first being my EV Override guide), and like my first, this is about a game you've probably never even heard of. But if you HAVE heard of it, and have played it, you've come to the right place to get help. Anyway, if you played the game and are reading this, PLEASE tell me! I want to know if this is helping out anyone! So let's just get this out of the way... This is copyrighted 2004 by Lord Seth (me). You can't use this. Period. You certainly can take IDEAS from it on your own guide, but be sure to give me credit. The only place this is allowed to be showed on is gamefaqs.com. You can't put it on your own website. But hey, you can make reference to it! Always nice to have a little publicity! This'll be pretty simple...it'll just be a walkthrough for the levels and a short FAQ. So here we go! If you want to contact me, my e-mail address is lseths@yahoo.com I. Version History II. Walkthrough III. FAQ IV. Credits I. Version History 1.0: Initial release. Probably the only release. II. Walkthrough I'll do this one level at a time. But first... Since this game is Macintosh-only and when I last checked the posts on the board have nothing to do with the actual game, I figured I might as well give a quick background. Earth picks up a signal, and you and your crew go to check it out. It takes 150 years to get there, although because of relativity or something it only feels like a few years. You get there, a giant alien spaceship appears and you first meet the Ishimans. It turns out the signal was an attempt to warn your planet that the Cantharan Order was going to invade Earth. After some persuasion, you convince them to loan you some of their ships for your use so you can go and retake Earth (they didn't want to do it themselves, so they're letting you use their ships while your apparently very large crew pilots them). But first you're going to have to go through the various alien races blocking your way. That's where this story begins. The name "Ares" comes from the fact that you rename your original vessel "Ares" (originally called Apollo). Now onto the walkthrough! You should have a fairly good idea about the controls because you went through the tutorial, so I won't bother with that. PART 1 Chapter 1: Easy Street As the level suggests, this is a very...easy level! You won't actually fight the Cantharans for a few levels--first you have to deal with the Gaitori. This level is extremely straightforward. Warp to the first transport and destroy it. If you want you can destroy its escorts. Repeat this process for the next four transports. Congratulations, you're done! Chapter 2: The Stars Have Ears This is a bit harder because you now have Gunships to deal with. Fortunately, you're in a Heavy Cruiser. Save your missiles for dealing with Gunships. Like Easy Street, you have the same basic strategy for taking out your targets, and like Easy Street, your targets are more heavily defended as you go on. Go to the first Relay Dish and destroy it. I wouldn't suggest destroying the defenders of the Relay Dishes unless they're giving you trouble. Unless you're trying to get a high score, there's no need to just destroy them. Do the same with the second Relay Dish. The third is a tough one. You have a Gunship to deal with. My suggestion is to go straight for the Relay Dish and try to destroy it ASAP. Or, alternatively, you could try to take out the Gunship first to make your job a little easier. It's your choice. Once you've taken out the third, the Obish Escorts will join you. Warp to the fourth and final Relay Dish and destroy it while your Obish Escorts distract the ships around it. IMPORTANT: Do not approach Myrmidon Station. You gain nothing from defeating it and it's extremely difficult to defeat it. Chapter 3: While The Iron Is Hot The Gaitori have a surprise for you in this level--they'll bring a Carrier into the system in the middle of the level. However, as long as you're not caught unaware by it, you should not have trouble dealing with it. Build Cruisers and send them directly to Demeter Beta. You want to take out the planet's defenses as quickly as possible. Once the Gaitori have no ships left, any ships they try to build will be immediately decimated by your ships around their planet (note: This is an excellent strategy for many levels as a finishing strategy. If you have enough ships around their planet, any ships they try to make will be immediately decimated). Also, don't worry if any of their ships head towards Demeter Alpha. They'll eventually come back to Demeter Beta and will be destroyed. After you've destroyed all their ships, send a Transport to capture the planet. The Carrier probably is coming at about this time, but if it tries to go towards the planet your Cruisers will probably distract it while the Transport lands. It's very possible you'll win this level without destroying the Carrier. To sum it up, build Cruisers and send them to the enemy planet (don't forget to go yourself, of course!). When their ships are destroyed, build a Transport and send it there. If you get a chance, make more Cruisers. If the Carrier causes any problems, just destroy it. Chapter 4: Shoplifter I Protect the Obish Transport at all costs. The Escort can be destroyed, your Heavy Cruiser can be destroyed, but the Transport MUST NOT BE DESTROYED. I've had my Heavy Cruiser sometimes destroyed in this level and have completed it in the Transport. Since you need 11 or more hostages to win this, that means you need some from each of the cells. Anyway, warp to Cell 1 and command the Transport to go there. Destroy all the enemies there, then target the Passenger Liner. Have the Mission Status subscreen open (you know, on the Build/Special Orders/Message/Mission Status thing? Choose Mission Status) so you can see how many Obiards are in the Transport. Anyway, go to Cell 2 and destroy the things there. The Transport should have picked up hopefully all of the Obiards (warning: Do not destroy the cell yourself. Let the Transport and Escort do that). Once the Transport has all the ones it can get, make it go back to the Passenger Liner. By now you've probably destroyed everything at Cell 2, so go to Cell 3 and try your luck there. If you start getting overwhelmed, warp out of there and try again. Once the Transport has managed to get to the Passenger Liner, have it go to Cell 2, then back, then to Cell 3. Remember that when the cells are destroyed Gaitori Cruisers and Fighters WILL appear in the system, so be sure to take care of them (though the Escort can probably protect the Transport). Congratulations! You've finished this level! Sorry if this guide is a little unclear on some points in this level, but most of this is just intuition anyway. If waiting for the Transport to get to the cells takes a while, just press F6 to speed it up. Chapter 5: Out of the Frying Pan... The Gaitori start out with a HUGE advantage over you. They have a Heavy Destroyer AND two Flak Drones. However, this level is still not very difficult, because the Gaitori are just being led by the not-so-smart AI, where you, on the other hand, have your human smarts. NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, "Flak Drone" will refer to the middle Flak Drone, not the one the Gaitori have near their planet. Immediately send the two Engineer Pods to the Flak Drone, then start making some Cruisers to protect Aeneas Alpha. Just keep making the until you can't anymore because you don't have the funds. Enemy ships will come towards your planet--just destroy them. When the Engineer Pods capture the Flak Drone, send some Cruisers there to defend it. Once your planet seems out of harm's way for the moment, send all your Cruisers to the Flak Drone. It's vitally important you keep it. Now make Engineer Pod after Engineer Pod after Engineer Pod and send them to the Flak Drone. Hopefully the Heavy Destroyer will go towards your Flak Drone and be destroyed. However, it's more likely it'll go towards Aeneas Alpha. If so, send all your Cruisers there and make some. Since your Flak Drone may be largely undefended at that time, if any enemy Engineer Pods are coming at it, be sure to destroy them. Once the Heavy Destroyer is out of the way, continue making Engineer Pods and sending them to the Flak Drone. Once you have a lot (6-10 is appropriate) send them all at the same time towards the enemy's Flak Drone. So many will be going towards it you will almost certainly capture it. Once you have it, send all your Cruisers to Aeneas Beta and build a Transport to capture it! Chapter 6: ...Into The Fire This chapter is easy. Make an Engineer Pod and send it towards the enemy's middle Flak Drone, then make two more and send them towards the other enemy Flak Drones. Then make a few Cruisers to defend your planet (enemies should be arriving by this time). If you see any enemy Engineer Pods, destroy them at once. Once the initial wave is halted, send some Cruisers to protect YOUR Flak Drones from Engineer Pods. Once you've captured the enemy's middle Flak Drone, send some Cruisers to protect that. Build up your Cruiser population until all enemy Flak Drones have been captured, then send them all to Hades Beta and overrun them! You almost certainly know what to do next, but just in case you don't, make a Transport and capture it. NOTE: Don't worry if an enemy recaptures one of their Flak Drones. The purpose of capturing their Flak Drones is so you can destroy their power suppliers so they can't make as many ships. This level is both where the Shareware version of this game and Gaitori space ends. Next stop, the Cantharan Order! PART 2 Chapter 7: On The Rocks. This level's pretty easy. Warp to the asteroid and let the Astrominer break it apart. If the Schooner poses problems, just destroy it (or just keep it away by attacking it--it's extremely fast and hard to hit). Once the asteroid is destroyed, the Astrominer will break one of its pieces apart. Once you collect one piece, Cantharan ships will enter the system. DO NOT FIGHT THEM. You'll almost certainly lose. Concentrate on getting the asteroid pieces. Since the part you previously destroyed only gives you three pieces, break open another part to get the fourth. The pieces float pretty quickly, so you might want to warp ahead of them to get them. Don't worry too much about protecting the Astrominer. It provides an excellent distraction while you collect the pieces. Chapter 8: Astrotrash Plus! You'll want to finish this level as soon as possible. The longer it goes on, the more Cantharan ships enter the system and the more difficult it becomes. Warp to the asteroid belt (caution: do NOT collide with the green asteroids). The Astrominers will probably start going after their own asteroids. You can wait for one to destroy an asteroid to start destroying its pieces to collect the samples, or just go after your own asteroid. Remember that the Astrominers will probably collect samples for you while you're getting your own. If Cantharan ships start disrupting you, try to destroy them if they're weak but evade them if they're strong. Basically try to get the samples quickly. The Astrominers will probably collect a few for you but don't depend on their help. This may take a few tries. Chapter 9: Hand Over Fist It's your first direct conflict with the Cantharan Order! Immediately send a Transport towards Proteus Beta and give it a Cruiser escort. It's unlikely you'll be able to capture it, but it's possible. If the Transport is destroyed just bring the Cruiser back. If you see any enemy Transports going towards Proteus Beta be sure to destroy them. You don't want the Cantharans having more ship building power than you do. Once you've destroyed the Transport, get out of there--there will probably be some enemy ships around it. Make some Cruisers and Gunships to defend your planet. Don't try to attack yet, you want your ships to be preserved. The Cantharans will probably send a few ships towards you, so be sure to get rid of those. The good thing about this level is that it's nearly impossible to lose. The Cantharans don't send too many ships your way. Just remember Cantharan ships can cloak. Your allied ships will automatically target them, but you might have some trouble getting them. Since this level can be tedious, try pressing F6 to pass the time sometime. What's with all the different paragraphs? Anyway, I would personally NOT suggest making Defense Drones. They're even slower than Fighters! It's true they're fairly strong, but they're only good for defense. Make one or two if you feel like it, but no more. Once you have a lot of ships, send them all towards either Proteus Gamma or Proteus Beta (depending on which is less defended). Your ships hopefully will destroy all enemy ships. If not, just try building up them some more and trying again. However, you may have managed to scatter their forces some, so try capturing Proteus Beta if you have a chance. If you attacked Proteus Gamma and destroyed the enemy ships there, the enemy ships at Proteus Beta will probably come after you. Destroy them and send a Transport to Proteus Gamma. If you went after Proteus Beta, now that you have control of the space around that, make a Transport and capture it to increase your funds. The Cantharan Carrier will probably come after you after you send your fleet at a planet (assuming you didn't already destroy it). It'll take a bunch of ships to get rid of it, but you can! This level takes a while to complete but it's actually quite easy. So, to sum up...make a large fleet and try to smash your enemy in one swoop. If that fails, try again. Chapter 10: Assassin This level may look difficult at first, because you're outnumbered. Fortunately Ishiman ships are superior to their Cantharan counterparts. You'll start out in a Heavy Cruiser. I highly recommend you stay with this ship throughout the level, and if it's destroyed, transfer to another Heavy Cruiser. But that's just a personal preference. The first batch of Cantharan ships will attack you. Destroy them quickly. You can either go for the Carrier or the smaller ships. If you're trying to take out the Carrier, be sure to circle around it while you're firing at it. Fortunately, some other ships will probably help you out. Once the first batch is done, send all your ships to the enemy Cantharan carrier (you actually only need to send your Carrier there, as the other ships are following it). Remember you only need to destroy the enemy Carrier. Getting rid of the other ships is useful but not necessary. So try going straight for the second enemy carrier. Since you're in a Heavy Cruiser, you can go circles around it while shooting at it. Going circles around it is good because it makes it harder for it to hit you. Chapter 11: Shoplifter 2 This is very similar to the first one, except it's a bit harder. But then again, what's what you expected, right? Warp directly to the closest cell. Dispatch of the enemy fighters quickly (shouldn't take long). Then break open the cell. I wouldn't fret too much about your fighters--they really won't help you out too much, so just don't worry if they get destroyed or anything. After breaking open the first cell, get five humans and warp back to the U.N.S. Ares. After the humans in your ship leave to board the Ares, go back to the cell and get the remaining humans, then return to the Ares. Go to the middle cell now. This will be, surprise surprise, harder than the first. The ships around it will often cloak, making them annoyingly hard to deal with. Remember that if you shoot at one when it's cloaked, it'll decloak. Dispatch of them quickly, open the cell, get the five humans, bring them to the Ares, come back and get the rest and bring them to the Ares. Hopefully you'll have 20 in the Ares at this time. Now for the really tough part (but you were expecting that, right?). Hopefully you'll now only need 5 or fewer humans to complete the mission. Go to the final cell, open it, quickly collect five humans, then warp back. Don't bother trying to engage the enemy ships, they're annoyingly fast and cloak a lot. If you need more than five humans, however, you'll have to take out the enemy ships, which is very annoying to do. Bring the rest of the humans to the Ares and you've won this level. Chapter 12: Make Way Ooh! Ooh! This is a really fun level! Okay, head to one of the Assault Transports and target them. Make a Gunship, then a Cruiser. They should go towards you and help you destroy the Assault Transports. While you're waiting for them to be built, try destroying the Assault Transports. You have a time limit here--the enemy Carrier will show up fairly soon and protect the Assault Transports, so make sure you take them out quickly. Once the Assault Transports are gone, your ships will probably go straight to the Bunker Stations, so make sure to order them to go back to your base. Immediately send two Escape Pods to the nearest Flak Drone. Once one of them captures the Flak Drone, transfer control to the other and send all your ships to the Flak Drone. Try to send an Assault Transport to that Flak Drone. As the Engineering Pod, take a path AROUND the Bunker Stations. Once you're close enough to the Flak Drone, target it and transfer control to another ship. Hopefully your Engineering Pod will capture the enemy Flak Drone. If you didn't, you're kind of screwed and will probably want to start over. Send all your ships (except for the Assault Transport) to the second Flak Drone. If an Engineering Pod is heading towards the first Flak Drone, dispose of it. It's essential to keep control of the second Flak Drone because it prevents all enemy Assault Transports from possibly capturing the Bunker Stations. Plus it'll take down enemy ships who foolishly approach it. At about this time the Cargo Ships should be entering the system. HOPEFULLY they'll manage to make it. Try sending Cruisers to protect them. If they don't make it, though, it's no big deal. The Obish Battleship is not required at all--it just makes things easier. Anyway, the important thing is to make sure the enemy doesn't capture the Bunker Stations and that you take out more of them than they take out of your ships. Build up your forces some, then send a sizable force to Bunker Station 1. It's important you take out any Cantharan ships there (some may be cloaked, so there are probably more than there appear to be). You'll also want a lot there to ward off any Cantharan attacks. Basically do the same for the second Bunker Station when you feel you're ready. Since you have a lot more funds than the Cantharans, you should be able to make more ships than they can. Send EVERYTHING to Fansi Beta. They should crush all the ships there. Then make a Transport and send it there. Some enemy ships may be around your planet, so be sure to send a few ships there to kill them. Based on what the Cantharans do, you probably WILL have to deviate from this guide, however. There are a lot of variables, so there is no one way to do this correctly. PART 3 Chapter 13: Yo Ho Ho As you may have surmised from the title, there will be pirates here. You can easily dispatch the Gaitori pirates with your Heavy Destroyer. After doing that, grab the Escape Pods. A Tractor Tug and two Heavy Cruisers will enter the system, and a Salrillian Carrier and some other Salrillian ships will enter soon also. The Salrillian Carrier is extremely dangerous. It has a beam weapon that has a very large range. Send your Heavy Cruisers towards the Salrillian Carrier immediately. If you're lucky, they'll start going in this weird loop and the Salrillian Carrier will leave you alone. If you're not lucky, you're going to have to take on the Carrier. Concentrate only on the Carrier. Focus all your firepower directly towards it until it's gone. Then take out the smaller Salrillian ships. While all this is going on, the Tractor Tug should be going towards the Luxury Liner and then bringing it to the Jump Gate. Once all the enemy ships have seemingly been destroyed, go to the Secorem Jump Gate. Sometimes enemies will hide there while cloaked. Once the Luxury Liner has exited the system, you'll have completed this level. Chapter 14: Captivating Try not to lose your Heavy Cruiser--it's the only one you have. The Cantharans have plenty of Carriers already and more on the way. Build Cruiser after Cruiser after Cruiser after Cruiser, all targeting your planet. Continue doing so until all Cantharan Carriers have been destroyed. Once you have a lot of Cruisers (and I mean a lot) send them all to the Cantharan planet! (the second one, not the one with the Border Drone) You should overwhelm their forces. Be sure to keep building and sending cruisers there until you've annihilated them. Then build a Transport and send it over. However, when the Transport nears the planet with the Border Drone near it, take control of the Transport and make it go AROUND the planet, then transfer control back to a Cruiser. The Transport will land and you'll have won. You can, if you want, try to capture the planet with the Border Drone around it. If so, make a lot of Transports and send them all there. You'll need a lot. Hopefully one will land. Once the Border Drone is under your control, you can destroy the Tractor Moors and free the Bazidan Battleship. However, there is no need to do so. Chapter 15: The Left Hand Just like the previous one, you can win this level without doing what it seems you have to. Send all of your ships to Thasero Beta immediately. Build ships and send them there. Once you have it subdued, make a Transport, control it, and take a course around the station. Capture Thasero Beta and you've won. However, if you want a bit more of a challenge... Build an Assault Transport and send it to Thasero Station. When it's about halfway there, send all your ships there and build some Gunships/Cruisers and send them there also. The important thing here is that once the Salrillians lose Thasero Station three Carriers will jump into the system--two Salrillian Carriers and one Audemedon Carrier. You've dealt with Salrillian Carriers before, so you know about them. Audemedon Carriers are stranger, however--they, too, have a beam weapon that deals a lot of damage (actually, more damage), however, it has a very short range. Stay out of its range. Dispatch of the enemy ships quickly and make more ships to guard your station, then when you have enough ships...well, you know the drill. Chapter 16: Hornet's Nest Hornet's Nest is one of the hardest levels in the game. Let's go step by step. First, destroy all incoming Fighters immediately. Do NOT try to tackle their stronger ships--just take out the Fighters. The Heavy Destroyers are capable of taking them out, however, the Fighters may by that time have destroyed the Research Vessel, which doesn't have many shields. Soon the Ishimans will contact you with information about what the "Massive Object" is. Go to it, but be sure to get there after the Heavy Destroyers. Destroy the Massive Object ASAP. Don't worry about the enemy ships--the Heavy Destroyers should distract them long enough. Once it's destroyed get out of their ASAP. The Heavy Cruisers will probably be destroyed by this time. When the Ishiman ships jump into the system, have EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM go towards the Research Vessel. This is to make sure they'll all stay in about the same area when the Audemedons attack. The Audemedon ships will arrive first, but don't worry...they won't attack for a little while. When they do (they will), destroy as many ships as you can. Since your Cruiser will probably be destroyed, transfer control to whatever ship you feel more comfortable with--a Heavy Destroyer or Carrier. I personally prefer Heavy Destroyers, but it's your choice. Anyway, destroy all the Audemedon ships that are attacking. There's a chance some of them may not have attacked. If so, send your remaining ships to destroy them. You have now completed this level. Chapter 17: ...And It Feels So Good This is a very whacky level in which it is difficult to give a walkthrough for. Nevertheless, I'll try. Send everything to the Bunker Station. It's vitally important you control that. Even if the Audemedons take control of both Outposts, as long as you control the Bunker Station you'll be on even ground. Once you've sent your ships to the Bunker Station (actually, even before that) send an Assault Transport to capture it. Unfortunately, the Assault Transport will take a while to get there. In the meantime, wait for your funds to build up and make a Carrier and send it to protect the Bunker Station. If you see an enemy Assault Transport, try to destroy it. You do NOT want the Audemedons to have access to as many funds as you. You can try to capture the Outposts, or just build up forces and rush the Audemedons. Either way is fine. Congratulations, you've beaten yet another level. Chapter 18: Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat This is the first level you get to try out the Human Gunship in. It's really cool, mainly because of its turreted laser. Go immediately to destroy the Audemedon Transport, then head back to Proxima Alpha to help destroy the enemies. More specifically, make sure the Transports land. Once it's in your hands, the rest of the level is self-explanatory. Eliminate all enemy vessels with the ships you can build, then make a Transport and capture Proxima Centauri Beta. Chapter 19: You Should Have Seen The One That Got Away Don't you love the names of these levels? You'll easily understand the name after you beat this level. Anyway... Send one Carrier to Pictoris Alpha and one to Pictoris Alpha 1. Build Gunship after Gunship and send them to Power Station BP1. You don't want it to be destroyed. Now, it CAN be destroyed and you can win, but at the very least try to protect it as long as possible. Keep making Gunships. DO NOT MAKE CRUISERS. The Cantharan Carriers will probably come after you soon. Dispatch of them, then build up more Gunships. The Gateship may come after you and it may not. If it doesn't, you can come after it. However, make sure you have a LOT of ships by then. Also, be sure you have destroyed both enemy Carriers (trust me, they WILL come after you). When attacking the Cantharan Gateship, be sure to focus all your ships on it. It has extremely strong shields, and it'll often push you back very far. If it does, just warp back to it. Once the Gateship is gone the rest is easy. Since there are three enemy planets, I suggest focusing all your attention on one at first. Send all your ships there, then send a Transport there. Repeat for the rest of the enemy planets and you've won. Chapter 20: The Mothership Connection At last! The final level! This level is very tricky. You have to go one-on-one with the Gateship...sort of. In this first part where you have to hit the Gateship with two asteroids, you have to be careful. Hitting just one will destroy your ship and you will lose. Also, remember to only use Weapon 1 (the one you fire with alt/option). This uses almost no energy and will move the asteroids. Anyway, you have to alter the asteroids' course so they'll hit the Gateship. This is very difficult and extremely difficult to explain. So just try to do it. I'll probably take a lot of tries until you get it right, however. However, be sure to NEVER engage the Gateship in a direct firefight, and be especially careful around it--it'll often cause your sensors to go haywire. Once the Gateship is kaput, a lot of Carriers will come in, along with a few other smaller ships. You need to destroy them all with just your ship. It took me a while to figure out how to do this. What you need to do is swing by the carriers with all weapons blazing. In other words, move BY them, then face them (without actually changing your course) Do this multiple times and eventually you'll destroy them. When there are only one or two left, however, you may be able to engage them in a direct fight. If they manage to get some hits in and your shields are down, just move away from them. They'll warp to try to follow you and will use up valuable fuel this way. Remember to ONLY use your Weapon 1...that way you won't run out of fuel ever. Once you destroy all the Carriers (and Fighters...and the rest of them) a LOT of human ships will jump into the system (why, oh why, couldn't they have come earlier?) III. FAQ Q: Is this game worth registering? A: Yes. At least in my opinion. Odds are, if you liked the first 6 levels (the only ones on the demo package) you'll like the rest. And anyway, you can't expect for Ambrosia to continue releasing Macintosh games if they don't make money off of them! Q: I don't have Macintosh. Any way I could play it? A: Not as far as I know, unless you have a Macintosh emulator (do they even exist? I have no idea) Q: Something in a level is taking forever! (i.e. a transport reaching an enemy planet) A: Well, that's not exactly a question, but try pressing F6. It speeds up the game a lot. Be careful not to use it recklessly, however...enemies could come while it's being sped up and you'd be caught unaware. Q: Help! Audemedon cruisers are doing this thing where they split into three! They're multiplying rapidly! A: Actually, it's a temporary camouflage attack. Two of them are completely harmless and your shots will go through them. Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell which ones are the pretend ones until it wears off or you manage to hit one of them. Fortunately the attack wears off after a few seconds and you can see which one is real. Q: I think found an error in this, or have a suggestion on how to improve it. A: E-mail me! Contact information is near the top. IV. Credits Thanks to Ambrosia Software for making this excellent game.
