The first solutions given are the "best" solutions to the puzzles and following them will gain you the maximum points available in the game (it says there's 158 but in reality there's 159). However, there are alternative solutions to most of the puzzles. Alternative solutions are marked with an asterisk (*). These alternative solutions will allow you to complete the game but won't grant you the maximum points available. Some parts of the game are timed. The times that you have to deal with the game are marked with a clock symbol (00:00). The way that the game works is that it requires you to type in your commands. The commands you must type are in quotations (") and in CAPS. When you type the commands you should not include the quotations and capitalization doesn't matter. In short, if I say "OPEN DOORS" you should type: open doors with no punctuation. When I say to move a certain number of screens I mean to go through that number of screen changes. So if I say "move three screens left" count the screen you're on as one screen, then the next as number two, and the next one as number three. You'll change screens three times and be at your destination. There are many ways to die and get caught in dead ends. While I do not list every way to die there are some locations you are very likely to die or get caught in a dead end. The warnings are marked in brackets []. {----------------------------------------------} {Walkthrough } {----------------------------------------------} You start out at the right side of the Castle. Being very careful not to fall into the moat cross the bridge and go to the left screen. Go to the Castle doors and "OPEN DOORS." Once the doors are open walk through the Castle hall until you see King Edward. Walk up to the front of the pink carpet so you're standing in front of him and "BOW." If you are in the right spot, Graham will Bow, if not you'll get a message telling you to change your position. After you Bow, "TALK KING." King Edward will tell you your quest. There is nothing else to do in here now so head back out of the Castle. Cross the bridge to the left and enter the next screen. Here there is a large boulder. Stand behind the bolder and "MOVE ROCK." [WARNING: If you stand in front of the boulder and move it you will die.] It will reveal a hole. "LOOK IN HOLE" and you'll see a Dagger. "GET DAGGER" and go up one screen. There is a large Oak Tree in this screen. Walk up to it and "CLIMB TREE." Graham will now be in the tree. There is a very large nest with a yellow egg in it. Make your way to the nest and "GET EGG." You will find that it's actually made of gold! There is nothing left to do here so head back and Graham will climb down the tree. *Alternatively, if you're lazy, you can fall out of the tree.* Once you're down from the tree go down one screen then left two screens. If you end up in the water "SWIM" or you'll drown. 00:00You have limited time to type swim: 3 seconds in fast speed, 25 seconds on normal speed, and 50 seconds on slow speed.00:00 After you're in the second lake screen go up one screen. Here you'll find a Well. Walk behind the Well and "CUT ROPE." You'll obtain the Bucket. [WARNING: Be sure not to cut the rope when it is lowered or you'll be caught in a dead end.] Move to the right side of the Well and "LOWER ROPE." Once the rope is lowered go back behind the rope and "CLIMB ROPE." Graham will start to climb. [WARNING: Don't fall off the rope in this screen or you'll die.] Climb down the rope and fall off into the water "SWIM" so he won't drown. *Alternatively you can "GET IN BUCKET" and Graham will descend without having to climb. "CLIMB ROPE" after you've stopped descending then fall off into the water. "SWIM" then "CUT ROPE" to get the Bucket.* 00:00You have limited time swimming in the Well: 3 seconds on fast speed, 25 seconds on normal speed, and 50 seconds on slow speed.00:00 Once you have the Bucket, "DIVE" so Graham will dive below the water surface. 00:00You have limited time diving: 3 seconds on fast speed, 50 seconds on normal speed, and 1 minute 40 seconds on slow speed.00:00 Don't worry about the bottle and can, they're useless. Swim towards the bottom left corner of the Well and go through the hole in the wall. You'll emerge in a cave with a Dragon. There are three rocks on the ground. Walk towards the second rock from the Entrance and stand at its end. [WARNING: Don't go any farther or you'll get killed by the Dragon.] "THROW WATER." If you're in the right spot, the Dragon will sulk off moving the boulder that blocks the alternate exit from this place. If you're not in the right spot, then the water won't do anything to him and you'll have to go back to the right screen to fill your Bucket and try again. *Alternately you can "THROW DAGGER" to try and kill the Dragon. If you fail, then you cannot try again as you have lost your Dagger. This is not the best thing to do because you lose a lot of points and you can never get your Dagger back even if you're successful.* Go back through the hole you entered in. Swim up the Well and "CLIMB ROPE." *Alternatively you can exit through the hole the Dragon opened and leave through the cave but you don't get any points for doing so.* Once you're back out of the Well go to the left and see the Goat Pen. You won't be doing anything here just yet so go down one screen. *Alternatively if you went out through the cave go down two screens.* You will find yourself in a screen with a fallen log and a stump. Walk up to the stump and "LOOK IN STUMP." Read the message and "GET POUCH." Once you have the Pouch "OPEN POUCH." Walk down three screens then go right one screen. You will emerge next to a Candy House. Walk up to the House and "EAT HOUSE." Here you will get one of two messages. If you hear a voice saying a little poem leave the screen (preferably to the left) and go back in and try again. [WARNING: If you open the door when you hear the poem you will get killed.] When the game gives you a message about the House tasting good open the door. You find yourself in a rather nasty looking room. Walk towards the back of the room and head into the door to the right and stay in the bedroom. 00:00You have limited time before you first hear the Witch: 3 seconds on fast speed, 30 seconds on normal speed, and 1 minute on slow speed.00:00 00:00Once you hear her you have limited time before the Witch enters the House: 3 seconds on fast speed, 25 seconds on normal speed, and 50 seconds on slow speed.00:00 [WARNING: If the Witch sees you in her House you will die.] Go to the bottom of the screen and "GET NOTE" and "READ NOTE." The Witch who lives in this House will return and start to get her oven ready. 00:00You have limited time here: 7 seconds on fast speed, 50 seconds on normal speed, and 1 minute 40 seconds on slow speed.00:00 [WARNING: If the Witch finishes heating her oven there is no way to escape the House and you are at a dead end.] While the Witch is heating up her oven walk up to her and "PUSH WITCH." She's now gone from the game completely and the field she used to chase you in is now safe. Walk to the cupboard and "OPEN CABINET." "GET CHEESE" and leave the House. *Alternatively, you can "OPEN CABINET" and "GET CHEESE" first and then enter the room to "GET NOTE" and "READ NOTE." This usually gives you enough time to escape before the Witch shows up or you can sneak out while she's heating her oven and not kill her but you lose points.* **Alternatively, you can enter the House at any time while you are protected by your Fairy Godmother's spell, holding the Magic Shield, or are invisible. If she's in there, the Witch will not stick around but you won't get the opportunity to kill her unless you leave and come back.** Leave the House and go down one screen then left three screens. You will pass a door built into the cliff side but there's nothing you can do with it yet. When you reach your destination there will be a lake that spans two screens. Wait a while and an Elf might appear. If he doesn't show up after about ten seconds, leave the screen and come back until he does come. Once the elf shows up, "TALK ELF." The Elf will give you a Magic Ring. This trinket will make you invisible if you first wear it and then rub it, but doing so will cause the Ring to disappear and you lose the points you got for receiving it so just hold onto it. If you decide to use the Ring, it will protect you from most of the creatures in the game and even prevent the Dwarf from stealing from you, but it cannot be used if you are in the Witch's House (you can use it outside the House and enter safely) or the Dragon's cave. If you use it and enter the water you will lose it. It will not protect you from the Rat or the Leprechauns either. Go up one screen. There is a Bowl here. "GET BOWL," "LOOK BOWL," and "READ BOWL." You can say "FILL" to activate the Bowl now but if you do, "EAT STEW." You'll lose the points for getting the stew but you can get those back later. Go left one screen. Here there is a Walnut Tree. "GET WALNUT" and then "OPEN WALNUT." Go down one screen, left two screens and down three screens. Here you'll encounter a Cabin. There is an axe and a pump in the screen but neither one of them is useful (King's Quest 6 even makes a reference to the axe). Enter the Cabin. Make sure your Bowl is empty and "GIVE BOWL" to the people. Then say "FILL." *Alternatively, you can give them the full Bowl. This doesn't result in any point loss but it does give a slightly less happy message.* The couple will be so grateful that they will give you their Fiddle as a reward. "GET FIDDLE" and leave the House. [WARNING: If you fall into the holes in the floor you will die.] Go up three screens and left three screens. You will find a clover patch. Walk up to the Four Leaf Clover that stands a little right from the middle of the patch and "GET CLOVER." Go right two screens. You will be in the screen with a cave. Wait a few seconds and a bird will appear on screen. If it doesn't appear go back to the left and re-enter the screen until it does come. Stand in between the rock and the tree on the lower left side of the screen and wait for the bird to fly down towards you. When the bird is about three quarters down the screen "JUMP." If you timed it right, the bird will grab Graham and carry him off. [WARNING: You must have either the Fiddle or the Four Leaf Clover and a Treasure or the Cheese before catching the bird or you'll get caught in a dead end!] After the cutscene you will find yourself near a hole in the ground. Ignore it for now and go one screen left. [WARNING: If you enter the hole now you'll hit a dead end!] In this screen you'll discover that you're trapped by the river. However, there is a Mushroom here. "GET MUSHROOM" and go back to the right. Now you can enter the hole. Follow the path until you reach a door guarded by a Rat. There are two dark patches in the wall here. Walk till you're directly below the first dark patch. "GIVE CHEESE" and the Rat will disappear. *Alternatively, you can give the Rat a Treasure (Golden Egg, Golden Walnut, Pouch of Diamonds) but you lose six points for doing so.* [WARNING: If you get too close to the Rat you will die. There is no protection for this.] With the Rat gone walk up to the door and "OPEN DOOR." You find some Leprechauns here. If you have the Clover they're no threat. If you don't have it you'll have to act quickly. Either way, "PLAY FIDDLE" and the Leprechauns will start to dance and leave the room. Go down one screen. If you played the Fiddle in the previous room the room will now be empty except for the Leprechaun King. The King will leave and the room will be empty except for the King's Sceptre and the Magic Shield. Walk up to the throne and "GET SCEPTRE" then walk up to the Shield and "GET SHIELD." The Shield will protect you from most of the creatures in the game but it won't stop you from getting killed. You can still fall to your death, drown, or get killed by the Dragon. It will not stop the Dwarf from stealing from you either. Go left up the stairs one screen. Walk up to the left side of the screen so you are as close to the small hole as possible. "EAT MUSHROOM" and you'll shrink to the size of a mouse. 00:00You have limited time now: 2 seconds on fast speed, 20 seconds on normal speed, and 40 seconds on slow speed.00:00 Get out of the small hole while you're shrunk. [WARNING: If you eat the Mushroom in the wrong place or don't get out of the hole while you are shrunk you will be caught in a dead end.] As soon as you get out of the hole you'll return to your normal size, no matter what speed you're playing the game on. Go down one screen, right two screens and up one. You may run into a Sorcerer while you're traveling. There's no need to worry about him now: the Shield will protect you from him. When you reach your destination screen you'll find that there's a small patch of sand next to the river. Walk up to the sand and "GET PEBBLES." Go north one screen, left one screen, north two screens and right one screen. An Ogre may bother you while you are traveling. Don't worry, the Shield will stop him from harming you. When you make it to the desired screen you'll find a Carrot Patch. Go to the field and "GET CARROT." Once you have the Carrot go left four screens. As you walk towards your destination, you may encounter Graham's Fairy Godmother. She'll cast a protective spell over you that will prevent most creatures from harming you. This is useful while you don't have the Shield but when you do have it it's useless. It will not work to stop the Rat, Dragon, or Leprechauns from killing you or the Dwarf from stealing from you. It will also not protect you from falls and drowning. 00:00The spell lasts a limited amount of time: 15 seconds on fast speed, 4 minutes 10 seconds on normal speed, and 8 minutes 20 seconds on slow speed.00:00 This can help you early in the game as you can keep coming back over and over again to get the spell as much as you want. When you reach your destination, you'll be on the front side of a Goat Pen. "OPEN GATE" and walk up to the Goat. Walk up so that you're right next to the Goat (he will move around) and "SHOW GOAT CARROT." The Goat will start to follow you. While you have the Goat don't enter the water, he won't follow you there and if you leave the screen you lose the Goat. You should also avoid going into places, either House will cause you not only to lose the Goat but points as well. If you enter the cave you don't lose points but you do lose the Goat. Go left two screens and down two screens. You'll see a bridge. Walk towards the bridge and a Troll will appear. The Goat will take care of the Troll and you can cross the bridge with no problem. The Goat will leave you, however, but there is no loss of points and this is necessary to complete the game. *Alternatively, you can give the Troll the Golden Egg, Golden Walnut, or Pouch of Diamonds and he'll let you pass but you'll lose points.* Go across the bridge down one screen. Here you'll see a Gnome wandering around his House. Making sure you're close to the Gnome "TALK GNOME." He'll give you three guesses to get his name right. Unfortunately, guessing Rumplestiltskin will only get you a mention that it's close but it isn't right. Guess "IFNKOVHGROGHPRM" (Rumplestiltskin spelled with a backwards alphabet) and he'll give you some Magic Beans. For maximum points guess this on your first try, subsequent guesses will get you one point less per guess. GET BEANS and go right two screens. *Alternatively you can not guess the name right in three guesses and "GET KEY." In this case you should go down two screens and left three screens. "UNLOCK DOOR" and "OPEN DOOR" then climb up the stairs.* This field screen has a number of large flowers growing on it. "PLANT BEANS" and a Beanstalk will grow. This is the only screen where you can do this. Now comes the hardest part of the game "CLIMB STALK" and you'll start climbing. In the first screen don't bother trying to match the Stalk's direction and just go straight up. In the second screen start by going up straight but stop just before reaching the middle of the Stalk. Move a little bit to the right so that Graham looks like he's still on the Stalk and climb up again. On the third screen things really get tricky. Start by going up straight again. About three quarters up you'll see that the Stalk bends. Stop just before reaching the bend and move to the left until you're on the leaves and Graham's left arm is touching sky. Start going up again. Stop just before reaching the top of the leaf. Move left so far that Graham's left arm is aligned with the left side of the top leaf. It will look like Graham is climbing on sky but it's the only safe spot. Climb straight up and you'll reach the top of the Stalk. When you reach the fourth screen just go straight up. As soon as you reach "solid" ground again, walk left two screens, down one, and right two screens. [WARNING: If you walk off the green areas and into the clouds you will fall to your death.] You'll find a see a large tree with a hole in the trunk. Walk up to the tree and "LOOK HOLE." You'll see a Sling. "GET SLING" and go up one screen and left one screen. A Giant roams this screen and he's got the Magic Chest. The main thing is to avoid him. This can be done a number of ways: if you have the Shield he won't bother you and you can just stand there. If you have the Fairy Spell protecting you, you can just stand there. The Magic Ring can hide you from the Giant but you lose points if you use it. If you don't have any protection, go right one screen, down one, left two, go to the top of the screen, and right one. Walk so that the tree is between you and the Giant. Be careful not to actually touch the tree: the Giant will kill you if he gets that close. If you're feeling playful or foolish, you can also try just walking big circles around the screen: the Giant doesn't move any faster than Graham. After 10 seconds on fast speed, 1 minute 15 seconds on normal speed, and 2 minutes 30 seconds on slow speed the Giant will fall asleep. *Alternatively, if you have the Pebbles and the Sling you can "USE SLING" when the Giant is on screen and kill him. This won't get you as many points though.* Walk up to the Giant and "GET CHEST." Go right one screen and enter the cave. *Alternatively, if you climbed up the Beanstalk you can climb down the Stalk but it's much harder and doesn't net you any extra points.* To walk down the stairs stand on them and make Graham go down diagonally. This will work until you reach the center of the room and Graham walks on level ground. Position yourself so Graham is on the middle of the steps going down and move diagonally again. [WARNING: The Dwarf sometimes appears in this second screen. If he does quickly move out of the screen and come back. If the Dwarf catches up with you he will steal a Magic Treasure if you have one and you will be at a dead end!] Just move down diagonally until you reach the bottom and you'll get out safely. Go down one screen to get out. The door will now be open even if you got the Beans. Go down two screens and left one. *Alternatively, if you climbed down the Beanstalk go up two screens and right three screens.* You will be at the Castle Entrance. Go to the doors and "OPEN DOORS." Follow the hall and "BOW." Again, you must be at the right spot to do this. 00:00You have limited time to Bow. After 5 seconds in fast speed, 50 seconds in normal speed, and 1 minute 40 seconds King Edward will get up and end the game.00:00 After you Bow, you have gotten full points (and even one extra) and you've won the game. {----------------------------------------------} {Item List } {----------------------------------------------} Dagger Found: In Hole Under Rock Use: Get Bucket Bad Use: Kill to Woodcutter {----------------------------------------------} {Frequently Asked Questions } {----------------------------------------------} Q: Can you still die when you get the Magic Shield/Fairy Spell? A: Yes. The protections won't save you from falls, water, the Dragon, the Rat, and the Leprechauns. Q: Can you get the Treasures out of order? A: Yes. In this version of the game you can get the Treasures in any order you want. If you really don't want a challenge and are afraid to lose, get the Magic Shield first. Then you can prance through the game without fear of most enemies killing you. Q: What happens if I give the Woodcutter a full Bowl instead of showing him how to use it? A: You get a different message that makes things seem a little less happy. There's no loss of points or anything because of it though. Q: Oh, no! That Dwarf stole one of my Magic Treasures! Can I get it back? A: Unfortunately no. If the Dwarf has stolen your Magic Treasures you are at a dead end. The game won't end but there's no way to win. If you have a save file to restore before losing the Treasure, you're fine, if not… start over. Q: Why do I keep falling off the Beanstalk? It looks like I'm on it! A: This game was made back in the 1980s, therefore it was new technology and had a lot of bugs. You're probably falling off the second screen near the top. When you get about halfway up you need to move to the left and start climbing just the leaves. On the final part, when you're up on top of the screen, you'll be climbing just that last leaf and, unfortunately, you'll eventually have to climb on the sky for the last part of it. Q: Uh, oh! I thought I was supposed to eat the Cheese! What can I do to get rid of the Rat? A: The Rat will take one of the three regular Treasures (Golden Egg/Golden Walnut/Pouch of Diamonds) as payment but you lose six points for it. As a basic rule of thumb: don't eat in this game. This is not "Quest for Glory" and your character doesn't need to eat regularly. Q: So there's nothing that I can eat safely? A: Well, you can eat the Stew and the Carrot at any time. You will lose points for doing so but with these items you can eat them and get them back for a restoration of the points. But don't eat the Cheese and whatever you do don't eat the Magic Beans, you will get caught in a dead end. You will also need to eat the Mushroom but in a very specific location. Q: I, uh, ate the Magic Beans. What can I do? A: Restore your game. If you eat the Magic Beans you can't go on. Q: I ate the Mushroom and it shrank me but the effects wore off so quickly I wasn't able to do anything! What am I supposed to do with it? A: You do eat the Mushroom but in a specific location. It's the way you get out of the Leprechaun's lair. If you eat it any other time you are in a dead end and have to restore to a previous save file. Q: What purpose does the Ring serve? A: It's the lesser point way to avoid certain dangers. It's useful when you are trying to get away from the Wolf, Sorcerer, Dwarf, Ogre, Witch (In the Field) and Giant. The trouble is: once the Ring has been used you'll lose the three points you gained for getting it. It won't work to get past the Troll, Dragon, the Witch if you're in her House, the Rat, or the Leprechauns. Q: Graham is supposed to be a Knight! Why can't he kill anyone? A: He's supposed to be the kind, noble type and kind, noble people don't kill unless absolutely necessary. Actually, you CAN kill but you usually get less points for doing so. The one exception is the Witch. You can kill her and even gain points for it. Q: I got caught by the Witch but I can still move around! Is there a way out? A: Unfortunately no. There's no reason to be able to move around after she's caught you other than the fact this was a new technology and they didn't yet know how to remove control of the character. Q: Your walkthrough didn't have me enter any screens with an enemy in them. What can I do about them? A: Except for the Witch, the only thing you can do is avoid them. If you have protection then there's no need to worry about any of them except for the Dwarf. The only protection against all five of the enemies of Daventry is the Goat. If you have the Goat with you none of them will want to attack. Even without protection, the Sorcerer will only freeze you for 5 seconds on fast speed, 1 minute 15 seconds on normal speed and 2 minutes 30 seconds on slow speed. As for the Witch, you can "DUCK" when she gets close to you but this is hard to do and if you just duck when she first appears in the screen instead of when she's close to you, she will catch you. The other enemies must be avoided. The best thing to do is to walk near the edge of the screen and leave and come back if the enemy shows up. {-------------------------------------------------} {Disclaimer/Copyright } {-------------------------------------------------} This Guide is Copyright 2011 Richard Turner Use of this guide is for public or private use only.
