All in Dolby Surround - a new and exciting experience!' Triad Stone is a game for Pioneer LaserActive systems with the Sega PAC-S1. It's an FMV game where sharp reflexes and a little memorizing will help you guide Ash to reunite the three pieces of the Triad Stone and restore peace to Erin Island. It's a little known game primarily due to the obscurity of the system. The Pioneer CLD-A100 LaserActive was a ridiculously expensive early 1990's convergence device, bringing together laserdisc, CD and 16-bit games. It never really took off. It's dedicated game catalog is small, but this is definitely one of the highlights. As far as I know, LaserActive has never been emulated either, so few people will have the chance to play this game. Copies of the game are hard to come by and there's an ever shrinking number of fully working LaserActive players with Sega packs that haven't had all their capacitors leak yet. So who am I writing this FAQ for? You, I guess. One day someone will need a guide to this lost classic game. I know that when I started playing the game that I wanted an FAQ, and there wasn't one. So here we are. Let me share what I've learned. US and Japanese versions of this release exist with different covers and instruction sheets but the laserdisc content is the same: region-free & bilingual. Language is selectable in Options menu. The Options menu also allows you to select difficulty from three levels: Easy, Normal and Hard. The difficulty settings only seems to adjust the length of time you have to input each command. The localisation into English is inconsistent. The cover-art, instruction sheet and in-game text disagree on the names and spelling of characters and locations (eg. Erin Island vs. Yllin Island). I'm going with the English in-game text. The animation from the game was later reworked into a game called Strahl on 3DO in Japan & USA and on Sega Saturn exclusively for Japan, but the video quality suffered, as it was converted to low bandwidth digital video. Some parts of the game were stripped out and the backstory was changed entirely. The ports are different enough from this original version that this FAQ won't cover them. _______________________________________________________ ____ Spoken Word Introduction [Spoken] transcribed from the intro voiceover: "In Erin Island, located in the northern Iris Sea, there was the legend of the stone passed along from ancient times. The stone was called the Triad Stone and it was said to have the power over all creatures, man and animal, heaven and earth. It was the remainder of what the gods left behind, long before people started living there. Yet no-one knew the whereabouts of the stone, and people were enjoying the beautiful nature and the endless peace of the island. King Barrol of the Farwall clan, from the northwest part of the island, in order to rule the entire island as his, found the Triad Stone and obtained the enormous power. The long lasting peace from the creation of heaven and earth had been broken and the people suffered from all kinds of disasters: earthquakes, floods, the plague and starvation. All caused by the evil King Barrol's magic. A young man of the Dar Nahn clan, Ash was the son of a brave shrine warrior, Gian, who had been killed by the Farwall clan. Succeeding his late father, Ash was determined to overthrow Barrol and challenge the battle to get back the Triad Stone. When Barrol took the Triad Stone, it was broken into three, and one of them was safely placed in the Castle of Bogard. For the revenge of his father and the peace of the island, Ash headed for the castle of Bogard. Ash Beowulf [?] was only 19 years old then..." _______________________________________________________ ____ Characters [Chars] Ash (aka Ashe) - protagonist. 19 years old, great hair. King Barrol (aka Baroll)- antagonist. Will you roll Barrol? Gian - voice of the Link Stone; happens to be Ash's father. Bogard (aka Bogarde)- one of Barrol's royal guards. Napire - witch of the south tower; revived by Barrol. Faless - Dark King of the Farwall clan. What a manly name. Gorems - Golems lol _______________________________________________________ ____ Controls [Ctrls] Default pad settings: Directional Pad - Up/Down/Left/Right A - Sword B - PowerUp C - Sword Start - Skip story text, select from menus If you go in expecting this game to control just like Dragon's Lair you won't survive Stage One. While the core mechanic of 'hit the right input at the right time' applies to both games, Triad Stone's control scheme features two crucial differences: 1. 1. Power Up! 2. Certain events will begin with a red flash, after which a power bar will appear near the bottom of the screen. You'll need to repeatedly tap the Power Up button to quickly fill the bar. Take too long and you're toast. Admittedly hammering on a button (instead of just pushing it) sounds kind of pointless in theory, but there's something about the sensation of franticly mashing a button in order to survive that is surprisingly satisfying. This is an early example of the button-mashing quicktime events (QTEs) that would be used to similar effect in games like Resident Evil 4 more than a decade later. 1. 2. Sword Usage 2. DON'T just push the sword button when the sword icon appears on screen. You'll die if you do. DON'T do what the actual instruction sheet says either: "When you see the sword marker appear on screen, press the D-Button in the direction the sword is pointing and press Button A or C to use your sword." The sword is always pointing diagonally up and to the left, but you shouldn't push the d-pad that way. You'll die if you do. DO push the directional pad toward whichever side of the screen the sword icon appears on while pushing the sword button. Examples: If the sword icon appears at the top of the screen, press the sword button + Up on the d-pad simultaneously. If the sword icon appears on the right side of the screen, push the sword button + Right on the d-pad at the same time. _______________________________________________________ ____ The Map & Stage Order [Map] After each stage is completed, you will end up on the map screen to select your next destination. Extra locations are unlocked as you progress. Unlike many FMV games, Triad Stone is non-linear, in so far as you can choose the order in which to play stages. The events in each location remain the same regardless of the order in which you visit them, which may give you the impression that the order isn't important. On the contrary, this is perhaps Triad Stone's most interesting undocumented game mechanic: the sequence in which you choose to play the stages actually does have consequences. If you visit some areas of the map before you have completed certain others, you will be hampered by visual effects that make completion of the stages much more difficult. Upon first encountering this, you might think it's a glitch or malfunction - it isn't. The strange rippling and flipping visual effects on the video represent a magical curse cast over your vision. It's only explained if you defeat either distorted stage. The monsters are using the 'mystic demon power' of the Magic Stone (that Gian referred to in his opening monologue) against you. The key to avoiding this is to make sure you collect the Magic Stone from the tower of Napire in the south BEFORE you visit Polinya Prairie in the centre of the island or Bellfaust Mountain in the south-east region. If you have absorbed the power of the Magic Stone, the curse is ineffective and your vision is unimpaired in those stages. Aside from that obvious visual difference, the stories Gian tells you differ depending on the order of stages you choose. Not every permutation of stage order has its own unique storyline, but different combinations of stage order will result in different dialogue from Gian. See the Triad Stone Lore section of this guide for more details. I've listed the stages below in an order that flows well and avoids the curse on your eyesight, but you really should try some different paths to hear more of Gian's stories, and the visual distortions are worth checking out at least once, especially if you're up for a greater challenge. _______________________________________________________ ____ WALKTHROUGH [Wkthru] Stage One The Castle of Bogard [Castle] PowerUp, Right, Up, PowerUp, Right, Left, Right, Down, PowerUp, SwordRight, SwordLeft, SwordRight, SwordUp, SwordUp, Up, SwordDown, Left, PowerUp, Right, Up. What? Uh, OK. That last sentence doesn't even make sense. You won anyway. Good job. ...wait a second. King Barrol's plan was defeated, but he lives on. In fact, we never even saw him. Was this left open for a sequel? _______________________________________________________ ____ Scoring [Score] Each correct button input scores up to 300 points. At the end of each stage your score and bonuses are tallied. Technical Bonus (%) x 1000 awarded for perfect timing Clear Bonus 10,000 x the number of consecutively cleared stages Perfect Bonus 100,000 awarded for no deaths during the stage Aside from the points, your reward is the loud and annoying sound of the bonuses being added to your total. Press A or C to skip it. Extra Credits: During gameplay or during the stage clear bonus screen, you'll hear a chime for every 500,000 points you score. This grants you an extra credit. Using credits to continue resets your score to zero. A leaderboard ranks the top five player scores. _______________________________________________________ ____ Triad Stone Lore [Lore] Below are some of the stories told by Gian between stages on the map screen. All spelling, grammatical and punctuation oddities are presented as they appear in the original text below. [After Stage One] Young warrior Ash... I am GIAN..... When I passed away, I embedded my spirit in the "LINK STONE". I hoped that you would defeat the royal guard, Bogard. As prophesied, you have overcome the powers of Bogard and forced him to relinquish the Link Stone. There are two other stones, known as: The "MAGIC STONE" and the "EVIL STONE". The evil King Barrol stole the stones and he is attempting to use them to rule Erin Island under his evil order. He does not know how to use the Evil Stone yet. If he unlocks the secret of that last stone, he will become unstoppable. Ash, your destiny is to collect the other two stones and seal all three of them back together into the original "Triad Stone". This will restore peace and tranquility to Erin Island. The last two stones, however, are protected by Barrol's royal guards. The "Magic Stone" contains mystic demon power, an evil magic used by monsters to destroy their enemies in battle. The "Evil Stone" contains demonic monsters which were harnessed by the gods many generation ago. The "link Stone" is used as a conduit for the mystical forces of the Triad Stones, and it is the bonding power between the other stones. If he unlocks their secret, he will be unstoppable. Ash, there is very little time left. For the sake of all living creatures on Erin Island, you must return the stones to their rightful resting place..... You are our only hope. [After Stages One-Two] Many years ago, gods, monsters and fairies all lived harmoniously together on Erin Island. To entertain the gods, the monsters would sometimes switch the sky with the ground. This would bring great laughter from these gods. The Gorems were the workers on Erin Island, and they would do anything to please the gods. Everyone loved the peaceful way of life on Erin Island. ...... Then, human beings inhabited the island..... The tricks that the monsters performed for the gods frightened these humans. They were also very fearful of the Gorems because of their great size. Although the gods decided to go back to heaven, the monsters tried to co-exist with the humans. Because of their differences, there was much friction between the humans and the monsters ...too much. When the gods saw this, they gathered up all of the monsters and sealed them in the Triad Stone. The gods hoped that one day, humans could get along with all living things. It truly is a shame that life on Erin Island was disrupted this way. Ash! The evil King Barrol is trying to unseal the monsters from the Triad Stone and use them to control Erin Island. Get back all of the stones before Barrol ruins Erin Island forever. [After Stages Two-Three] or [After Stages One-Four-Three] Ash! There is something that you should know. Even though you beat those monsters, more of them are appearing. Barrol is using the Evil Stone to release more and more monsters. Once they are free, they recharge their magic powers using the Magic Stone. There is only one way to restore peace on Erin Island. Ash, you must defeat Barrol to seal back the monsters and link the three stones together. They know you're coming, so expect to see traps along the way. Ash, it's up to you to save the people of Erin Island. If anything happens, just don't back off. [Bellfaust Mountain and Polinya Prairie stages unlock] [After Stage One-Three] Many years ago, when the gods ruled the land, Erin Island was a place filled with beautiful fairies. One of the fairies in particular had a great love for the nature on the island and for many years. Erin Island was a place of great harmony. ....Then, human beings inhabited the island.... They cut down the trees to build their houses.... They uprooted flowers to decorate their rooms.... This caused the fairy a lot of pain. But then the pain turned into anger, and she began punishing people. She turned into a witch and started to take away from people the things that were most valuable to them. Their gold, their jewels, even their lives.... At first, it was only adults that lost their lives, but after a while she took the lives of children, too. When the gods saw this, they captured the witch and sealed her and the evil monsters together inside of the Triad Stone. If Barrol releases them from the stone, all the people of Erin Island would be in imminent danger. Ash! It's up to you to make sure that the witch and the monsters stay sealed inside the stones and stop Barrol from taking over Erin Island. [After Stage One-Four] Along with the monsters that were sealed inside the Triad Stone, there resided a witch named NAPIRE. She was formally a fairy on Erin Island. Fairies are visible to humans only when they wear their appearance clothing which was handed down to them by their ancestors... When Napire was a fairy, she had a great love for the nature on Erin Island and for many years, the island was a place of great harmony. ...Then, human beings inhabited the island... They cut down the trees to build their houses. They uprooted flowers to decorate their rooms. This caused Napire a lot of pain. But then then pain turned into anger, and she began punishing people. She turned into a witch and started to take away from people the things that were most valuable to them. Their gold, their jewels, even their lives.... At first, it was only adults that lost their lives, but after a while she took the lives of children, too. When the gods saw this, they captured Napire, sealing her and the monsters inside the Triad Stone. If Barrol releases them from the stone, all the people of Erin Island would be in imminent danger. Ash! It's up to you to make sure that this witch and the monsters stay sealed inside the stones and stop Barrol from taking over Erin Island. [After Stage One-Three-Two] or [After Stage One-Four-Two] Ash! Something terrible has happened! A new monster has appeared! King Barrol must be behind this. He probably found a way to release them from the Evil Stone. Because of their hatred towards human beings, these people's lives are in jeopardy. All of this could have been avoided if people never came to Erin Island. Barrol will use the monsters to destroy innocent human beings. Unless the monsters can be stopped, many lives will be lost. Then Barrol will be free to rule Erin Island as he wishes. This madman MUST BE STOPPED. Ash... you must get the two stones and foil Barrol's evil ambition. [Polinya Prairie and Bellfaust Mountain stages unlock] [After Stages One-Two-Three] As shrine warriors, one of our duties was to pass on the legend of the Triad Stone... to make sure that the past would not be forgotten. The primary duty of a shrine warrior however, is to protect the Triad Stone at all costs. Although I passed away, my duty as a shrine warrior still remains. When Barrol got the Triad Stone, it separated into three pieces. We must get these three pieces and link them back into the Triad Stone. Ash... my son... you are the chosen..... [Tower of Napire location unlocks] The tower!! A long time ago, a witch named NAPIRE took the lives of many men, women and children on Erin Island. That over there stands Napire's tower. Barrol brought her back to life, and that's why that tower appeared. Napire will be waiting for you on the top floor of the tower. She's sure to have one of the stones. Ash! Destroy Napire and get that stone. [After Stage Seven (cursed vision)] ?Ash, the monsters are regaining their powers from the magic stone. The last monster you fought, used its magic to affect your vision. [Tower of Napire location unlocks] It will be difficult to defeat these stronger enemies. The tower!! A long time ago, a witch named NAPIRE took the lives of many men, women and children on Erin Island. Over there stands Napire's tower. Barrol brought her back to life, and that's why that tower appeared. Napire will be waiting for you on the top floor of the tower. She's sure to have one of the stones. There are many traps along the way. Ash! Destroy Napire and get that stone. [After Stage Six (cursed vision)] Ash, your adversaries are becoming stronger and stronger. The last monster you fought, used its magic to affect your vision. The monsters are draining the Magic Stone to re-energize their magic powers. [Tower of Napire location unlocks] The tower !! A long time ago, a witch named NAPIRE took the lives of many men, women and children on Erin Island. That over there is Napire's tower. Barrol brought her back to life, and that's why the tower appeared. Napire will be waiting for you on the top floor of the tower. She's sure to have one of the stones. There are many traps along the way. Ash! Destroy Napire and get that stone. Erin Island's fate rests on your shoulders. [After Stage Five] You've done it Ash, you're retrieved the Magic Stone from Napire. Now the monsters will not be able to use their evil magic anymore. ..... Ash ..... Unfortunately the human beings were unable to co-exist with the monsters. This fact saddens me very much. All living creatures should be able to live together. Bogard and Napire are two of a kind, so they deserve each other. All the people of Erin Island have to obey its laws. The monsters broke these laws so now their fate must be sealed! The beauty of Erin Island is being threatened. You must stop these evil monsters or the beauty of Erin Island will be just a distant memory! You have a dangerous journey ahead of you. The Magic Stone will protect you. The only one left is the Evil Stone. Ash go forth and link the Triad Stone back together again. [After Stage Seven (if completed after Stage Five)] Along with the monsters, their magic was sealed in the Triad stone by the gods. If used properly, this magic can bring much happiness. In the wrong hands it can bring an equal amount of detriment. The gods knowingly sealed that magic inside the Triad Stone. What was left in its place was the power of "The Miracle" The only way to get a Miracle was through prayer. If enough people prayed, a Miracle was sure to be fulfilled. The people of Erin Island now have a reason for collective prayer. Without prayer, Erin Island will become a wasteland indeed. Ash, the only stone left is the Evil Stone, and if you find it, the island may not turn into a wasteland after all. [After Stage One to Six in order] The Triad Stone contained a powerful magic. The magic can heal sickness and could control typhoons and snow storms. It can bring rain or sunshine. The breadth of its power was unbelievable. The desire to control it was equally unbelievable. There is a limit for desire. When the limit is exceeded, it usually metamorphoses into malice. That malice is the root of what is threatening Erin Island. The gods knowingly sealed the magic inside the Triad Stone. Barrol, driven by greed and vanity, foolishly unsealed the power of the Triad Stone. Ash, you must stop Barrol before it's too late. [After Stages One-Four-Two-Seven-Five-Three] I think the monsters are feeling an internal pain. Although they have regained their freedom... .....witnessing he destruction of their homeland must be affecting them somewhat! You won't only be saving Erin Island by securing the Triad Stone, you will be saving the monsters too. Ash, you have evolved into a better warrior then I ever dreamed possible When you were little, you couldn't imagine harming an ant. Now you have become a better warrior than your father. Ash, bring peace back to Erin Island. [After the Northern region is revealed (regardless of stage order)] Ash, this place is called "The Cape of Darkness". It got that name because of the Dark King that resided there. A long time ago, he tried to get the Triad Stone and overthrow Erin Island, not unlike Barrol. His father was a monster and his mother was a human from the Farwall family. He was raised alongside human beings but he began to notice that he was not the same as the other children. The other children would tease him and they were very cruel. He found out that he was the son of a monster. His mother later told him that his father was still sealed inside the Triad Stone. At first he only wanted to release his father from the stone, but as time passed, he wanted to use the Triad Stone for other purposes..... ...He wanted to seek revenge on the people of Erin Island and rule the land. When he got the Triad Stone, he became the Dark King. He then built a castle called The Cape of Darkness. He also released monsters on Erin Island. There was one brave warrior that stood up to the challenge and attempted to get back the Triad Stone. He succeeded in destroying the Dark King and returning peace to the island. After he sealed the Dark king into the stone, the gods sunk the Cape of Darkness into the ocean. The dark king's name is "Faless". He has escaped from the stone. His castle is called the Quartz Castle. The castle is decorated with crystals. Ash, you must defeat Faless and get the Evil Stone. The people of Erin Island are depending on you. [After Stage Eight] Ash, Faless has run away with the stone at the seaside. He will be waiting for you there ! You must go to the seaside and defeat him. Ash....it all depends on you. _______________________________________________________ ____ Game Credits [Credits] Voice Clark Wayne Bowdoin Tadashi Koba Akifumi Endoh Tomoko Ohtsuka Masayo Yoshida Tomoko Murakami Video Staff Camerman Atsushi Ohara Lighting Director Mitsuhiro Endoh Video Engineer Noriyuki Yamane Video Editor Kenichi Kishi Tatsuya Watanabe Hiroshi Kohno Art Director Toshikazu Sekikawa Set Decorator Masao Mitsuhashi Kiho Saga Matsuyuki Kashiwagi Takuya Yamaguchi Illustrator Shin Yamanouchi Still Photographer Yoshitaka Matsumoto Gaffer Tsutomu Kitamura Hiroshi Miyazaki Assistant Cameraman Shoji Nogami Location Manager Tetsuharu Ohmine Production Manager Shigemitsu Suzuki Video Director Atsushi Fujimoto Video Produced By Kailas Inc.
