Don Quixote FAQ by bakudandan 5/23/2011 - submitted to GameFAQs bakudandan@gmail.com If you're reading this, congratulations on your purchase of one of the most excruiatingly boring games ever made, Don Quixote for the Laseractive. Hopefully this guide will serve to alleviate some of that boredom (though it isn't a guarantee by any means) This guide is based on the Japanese version of the game. Though I can't imagine the localized version could be much different, if something glaringly obvious is missing from my guide, it probably is not my fault... that being said, if you have any new information about the game you want me to add, don't hesitate to drop me an email. Unlike most Laseractive games, the Japanese version is only in Japanese. This game, despite being an RPG, is almost completely linear. The point of the game is to cover all the correct spots on the map. As this can literally take hours to do, I've made maps of all the notable spots in the game so that you don't have to piss your life away playing this heap of shit (which is why this FAQ exists in the first place.) I made two run-throughs of the game, one to cover each spot on the map (which took around 50 hours) and another to find the most optimal path to take through the game without missing anything (which should take around 15 hours max.) This FAQ focuses on taking that optimal path, with minimal items, so follow my directions carefully or you'll be hard up for items by the end (namely, water) and will probably have to spend a few restless hours searching for them. If you're wondering if you'll spoil the game by reading this guide... please use the guide anyway, trust me. It will make your life so much easier. Besides, there's not really anything to spoil in this game. ****************************** Controls ****************************** Up - go forward. You will quickly become tired of this action. It is also used to check things in front of you or progress scenes. You can consider it as an all purpose "Action" button. Left/Right - Turn left or right. Down - Turn around. Start - This brings up the current map, you can walk around with the map up. Needless to say, you should take full advantage of this feature. A/C - select something B - cancel That's it! ****************************** Enemy Respawning ****************************** Enemies are not random in this game, rather they are placed in pre-determined spots on the map. If you escape a battle, and try to go anywhere but behind you, you'll just wind up back in that very same battle. Whenever you leave the current area, ALL the enemies on the map will respawn. This will even hold true if you save and reload the game. If you save on an enemy respawn point, the battle will begin automatically next time you load. So if you're going to save, get the hell off the spawning point! There is an interesting glitch that has resulted from this. If you enter a battle, escape, save, and then reload, and hold Up while reloading, you will skip the battle and walk forward, which can potentially save you a lot of health (especially near the end of the game.) Note that you have to be facing the direction you want to walk in, you can't move Left or Right with this glitch, only forward. ****************************** Items ****************************** There are three main items in this game to be familiar with. Water - heals you by about half. This is the most important item in the game since battle strategy pretty much boils down to how many times you can reheal yourself. You'll need about 4-7 waters (and 2 Knight's Waters) to fight the final boss. Leaf - unpoisons you. If you see a skull flashing next to your health bar, you are poisoned, but your health will only drop when you walk. Unless you are in extremely low health, there is no use in stocking up on these, as the difference in health you get from poisoning is marginal. The 6 leaves you pick up in the first area should be enough for the rest of the game. Treasure - You don't open these chests but rather sell them at the trader's. They randomly sell from 80P up to 150P. So when I say "treasure" in this guide, I mean one of these things. When you are selling these, if you don't like the selling price push B to cancel and it will change. With some patience (god knows you need it for this game) you can sell all of your treasure for the maximum price. If you are playing by this guide you need to be selling these for 120P each, at the very least. You will find these three items all over the game maps. ****************************** Guide ****************************** You will be asked if you believe the dream and want to go on a quest. If you pick NO, you will get stuck and actually have to reset the game. So, pick YES. Treysia ------------------------------ Now you will be in Treysia. Before you can leave, you need a weapon, a horse, and a saddle for the horse. T L M+-+B || | G G CG E++-+CX+-+-++C I| | C| | || WC-+-++H|C++X X+--+-++-+-++C | | K| | GE D+--+XX+-+C X C C C X: nothing at these spots (knock knock.) They exist merely to waste your time. E: these are the white exit points. You can't use the starting point here though. C: these are the citizens that give you such helpful nuggets of insight as "I don't know" or "never heard of him". G: a sign, which gives you a hint. H: this guy will give you a horse for no reason. W: your weapons are here. Buy the whip and the sabre, you don't need the knife. Get the armor too. T: this is where you trade your treasure and stuff for money. Remember, you should be selling treasures for at least 120P, though if you hold out for more you can get a few more waters at the end of the game when you'll really need them. B: the blacksmith; come here to get your horse shoed. Once you get your horse come here or you will lose health as you walk around (similar to being poisoned.) M: medicine shop. You need the lamp from here, but after going to the weapons and blacksmith you won't have enough so leave it for later. I: the inn, you will be healed and unpoisoned for mere pennies. K: you need the key from here, but it first shows up as question marks. When the question prompt shows up, it means you need to do something before you can access it. In this case you need to go to the L spot first. L: A girl is crying here, come here first, then you can get the key. D: The key unlocks this door. Get the dog inside and bring it to the girl at L, she will give you a saddle, how convenient. Talkia Plains ------------------------------ Get ALL the items here. Don't worry if you get poisoned, just keep walking around, you'll still have enough health after getting the items, and you can go heal at the inn afterwards. The enemies here are bees(poisonous) and wolves. For bees use the whip, for wolves use the sabre. This is the only time you'll need the whip. LET T X L X+++-+XET+-+X T+++X|?+?|W+X WXLX+-+-+-+E L | |T+-+X S+-+-+-+XL T+-+-+-+D X W X L X: nothing here. L: leaf. The leaves in this area should last you for the rest of the game. W: water, get all the water here. T: the treasure items that you can sell. S: sapphire. D: diamond. E: you can't use the top left exit yet. Get the sapphire and diamond and put them in the statues at the ? spots, and the top center exit will open. Now that you have all the items, go back to Treysia, use the inn, sell your treasures (remember to sell them for at least 120P) and buy the lamp from the medicine shop. Then go back out and use the exit you opened. Underground Passage ------------------------------ Unlike most areas in the game, if there's an item at the dead ends here, you will see a treasure chest at the dead end. Don't bother exploring here, nearly every spot is a dead end, with a few treasures here and there. (This holds true for pretty much every area in the game.) The enemies here are blindwolves and earthworms. Use the sabre. Don't use any of your waters just yet, unless it's somehow a real emergency. From where you start, go down, then left. When you get to a spot that looks like this: X X X ------- | | --------- | | | Go down the leftmost path here as far as you can, you'll fight an earthworm. Go down through the U turn road, then go right. Kill the wolf, and go up to where the dead end with two spots is. The bottom of these spots has a treasure, and the top spot has a jade stone, use it right away. All this does is let you fight the armole. Now go as far left from here as you can until you see a fork in the road leading to a dead end. Instead of going down there, go up all the way, then when you get to the road where you automatically turn left, keep going as far left from here as you can. Your aim is the bottom left corner, where the exit is. After you kill the armole, get the Pass from the exit spot, and you can leave. If you check the dead end in the top left corner, you'll fight Dracula. You can beat him if you have the spear and about 30 waters to waste, but doing so does ABSOLUTELY nothing. He'll still be there after you beat him, so don't waste your time. He's more of an easter egg, I guess. If you use the Pass from your inventory, you can warp to the entrance of wherever you've been. Warp on over to Treysia and use the inn. You may wish to refill your horseshoes too. Then warp back to the Underground Passage, turn around to go back out to the Talkia Plains, and go to the top left exit there. Ojari ------------------------------ You'll get here once you cross the bridge in Talkia at the top left exit. Enemies include wolves, magicians, and death flowers. None of them are particularly dangerous. Heal here if you need to (one or two waters at most, since there is an inn coming up.) EX T X L E----++-+-+-+X L++-+-+-+W W++-+-+TE T ||WX | X+-+++XX+H L+-+++E X X+-+++L |LLX| X++XL+X E++XX+W TW T X: nothing here. T: get all these treasures. W: get these waters too. The village is empty and you cant beat the windmill yet, but go to the village so you can warp there in a bit. The bottom left exit is the bridge to the Pasha Desert, but it will be broken until you get there. The one in the center goes to Hadasta, go there once you got the treasures, water, and kerchief. E: the entrance and exit. K: get the key to the bell tower. H: get the hammer here. ?: now go to this spot. Use the handkerchief on the statue, the key on the door that appears afterwards, and the hammer on the bell in that door. Now you can explore Hadasta and the fisher village. I: the inn, go here to heal. C: you can talk to people at these spots. G: signs which provide hints. W: weapons. Buy the spear and armor. T: trader. Sell your treasures here and old armor, along with the rest of your weapons. B: blacksmith, you should be running low on shoe so get some here. M: medicine shop. All you need here is the salt. S: after you hit the bell with the hammer, go here to get the thunder spike. Once you're done here, warp to the fisher village. Fisher Village ------------------------------ You don't actually need to come here at the moment, but explore if you feel like it. CCWX E X++++-+X C++++-+C |||| C G++++X IEMT X: nothing E: exits. The girl at the top right warps you to Childoria once you've beaten the windmill. C: talk to the villagers, who are being terrorized by the windmill (lol) I: the inn. M: medicine shop, you don't need to come here. W: weapon shop, you don't need anything from here either. The net stuns the octopus which you'll meet in a bit, but it only hits half the time and only stuns it for one turn, so the net effect is the same as if you had no net. The harpoon is useless since you have the spear. T: you can sell your stuff here. G: a sign you can read. Once you're done here, leave and turn right to go to the windmill. Don't go past the windmill, instead use your thunder spike on it, then you can pass. Grizasu Forest ------------------------------ The enemies here are a bit harder. Start using your waters if you get below 1/4 health. The enemies are the octopus(poisonous) and slug. Use the salt on the slug before you attack it, or you won't do much damage. The only area of interest is in the top left corner of the map, go straight there. It looks something like this: T L L+---+--T | L+W | L T | | T+-------T X X: nothing T: treasures L: leaf W: waterfall. Go through it and keep talking to Urganda in the house until she gives you the courage crystal. Now warp back to the fisher village and go fight the windmill, then go to the girl at the top right of the fisher village and use the Charm. You'll get the hope crystal and be sent to Childoria. Childoria West ------------------------------ You can't use the warp anymore, fuck. You'll lose health here until you get the pocket warmer. Go upwards and into the village of Dazni. Dazni ------------------------------ Annoyingly enough, the town is empty. Talk to him until he says something about Frosty's heart, then leave. C: people you can talk to. G: a sign you can read. I: the inn W: go here and get the ice armor and both ice weapons. T: sell your old armor and weapons, along with any treasures. B: blacksmith, get your horse reshoed for the last time. M: medicine shop. Get the pocket warmer... also, now is the time to buy water, BUY AS MANY WATERS AS YOU CAN. ?: There are earpads here. These don't affect anything as far as I know. My guess is, they left these here for an unused enemy, and forgot about them. Childoria West ------------------------------ Enemies are the iceman and bear(poisonous). Use the sword on the iceman. The bear is the first of the tougher enemies in the game, use the spear. Back outside, go all the way to the top and check the left spot. (If you didn't talk to the elder, you can't come here.) Frosty will appear. Kill him with the ice spear and get his heart. Go back to the elder in Dazni and the heart will turn into an apple (?) and you'll get sent to Jaba Island. (You should use the inn first, naturally.) Jaba Island ------------------------------ Get all the waters here. E: from where you start at the bottom, get all the waters, then go heal at the shrine if you need to, and go to the cape at the top. Just stand there until you hear a noise, then press Up when you hear the noise and you'll go to Childoria East. Childoria East ------------------------------ Same enemies as before. There's next to no items here, so follow the path straight up to the castle. There's also an inn and medicine shop to the left of the castle, you should already have a bunch of waters though. Kirara Castle ------------------------------ The spots here are all just identical empty rooms with a few treasures scattered here and there. You can press left and right in these rooms to spin around, wow! The only enemy here is the soldier. The top of the map is where you need to be. It looks like this: W Q+X W+W XE W+W W XT++X W+--+W T X++++X X X+-+------T X | Get all the Waters, you'll need them to fight the Queen at Q. You'll also fight Sancho on the way up. After you've beaten the queen with the ice spear, use the apple when prompted. Then go to the Exit at the top right corner of the map (getting the Treasures along the way) and you will travel to Aquaris. If you turn back around when you beat the queen and enter the room, you can spin around in the empty room, yay! Aquaris ------------------------------ Retardedly, the town is once again empty. There are two exits on the top, take the leftmost exit. Pasha Desert ------------------------------ There's a water on the 5th spot up on the left edge. You can't fight anything here yet. Go up the left path and when you reach the top three spots, take the leftmost one. You'll talk to the sphinx. Show him the courage crystal, then the hope crystal. If you show him the wrong thing, he'll warp you to Hadasta. You can cross the bridge from there back to the desert, but you'll have to fight a scorpion, which will set you back 6-7 waters. So, show him the right things. You'll get the wisdom crystal. Now go all the way back to Aquaris. Aquaris ------------------------------ The last town. You can explore it since it's the "evening" now (a sorry excuse for an evening) XX XEX X++LX+++X || |||XIE C++XX++++++M |XCX|W?||| X+-+++CX+++X |X|||X |XX X++++++C| ||||||X|XC C++++++++++X X++++++++++X XEXBXCXTXX X: the secrets of the universe. (more likely, it's nothing) C: converse with citizens. The one guy on the bottom row of buildings will give you a water. I: inn, go here to heal B: blacksmith. You don't need to bother coming here anymore. T: sell any treasures here. W: weapons and armor. Buy the armor first then the sword. (You'll probably need to go back and forth from the trader's a few times to sell your old armor and have enough to buy the sword.) M: medicine shop. Once you have the flame sword and armor, sell your remaining gear and spend all the rest of your money on water here. The ice will fully heal you, but it only works in the desert so don't even bother. Also if you're out of leaves, buy one more (and another if you're going to save the boy in the desert.) L: library, you don't need to come here. There are two books here you can look at. ?: this church is another optional area, described below. E: once you're done here, go out the top right exit. Optional Church ------------------------------ The scenes here will differ depending on whether you saved the boy in Pasha Desert or not. If you go out the top left exit, go right one (fighting the scorpion with the flame sword) and go down one, the boy is there. Use a leaf on him to save him. Answer either YES or NO to the woman, either way you'll end up trapped. Now answer NO. (If you pick YES, you'll die.) Then you'll be in jail. Talk to Sancho, then check the door behind you. If you saved the boy earlier, you'll escape. If you didn't, then once you check the door, light the three candles around you with your lamp and you'll escape. Not much to it other than that. Pasha Desert ------------------------------ Go out the top right exit of Aquaris. The enemies here are scorpions(poisonous) mummies and sandworms. There's an oasis where you can refill your health. It's the middle spot in the bottom right sector of the map, surrounded by roads. If you go up from here, crossing the long road, cross the next road after that and then go right one space, you'll fight the sandworm. (There are only a couple of them so I thought I'd point it out.) Keep going up and exit into the cave. Aldenado Cave ------------------------------ A straight forward maze. The enemies here are all poisonous and there are no leaves in the cave either. The enemies are zombies(pushover), bats(normal), and ghosts(tough). Once again, there are chests at the dead ends where items are. Here are the directions for getting through. -To the left of where you start is a water, get it. Ignore all the spots after this. -If you want to see the ghost (save first) go all the way to the left on this first path. -Take the path to the lower left of the water and go down it, you will fight a zombie. Don't use your leaf yet. -Keep following that path, around the U turn road, until you have a choice of going down or left. Go left, then up. This will take you near the top of the map. Keep going from here, to the up and left, you will fight a zombie. -When you get to the end of this road, you can either go up or down, choose down and head to the exit. You will fight a bat on the way. At the exit, use your leaf, since you won't get poisoned from here on. You will get a Knight's Water at the end, which fully heals you. Save it for the final boss. Alifanfaron Castle ------------------------------ The end of the game! Unfortunately for me, there are multiple floors in the castle, and 99% of the rooms are empty, but you can still spin around in them. There are two enemies here, devil soldier and great mage. This is where you need to be extra careful since you likely don't have many waters left. Save often and try to either walk around, or skip (using the glitch I explained at the top of the FAQ) the enemies. Ideally, without skipping any enemies, you only need to fight 3 mages on 2F and have 2 waters left after fighting them. You can walk around the rest of the enemies, I think... You will need 2 Knight's Waters and around 4 regular waters to face the final boss, though if you're really lucky enough you can get by with just 1 or 2 regulars. 1F --- Go up until you see a group of six spots shaped like an upside down triangle. Go to the room at the point of this triangle and get the Dream Helm, put it on. From here go up the center. The left and right exits here both lead to a sectioned-off area which doesn't have any useful items. So, go up the center exit. 2F --- Follow the path and head up. There are 3 mages on the path, make sure you have at least 2 waters left after fighting them all. They are tough to manage so reload your save if you find yourself using too many waters. Now go up the left side. There are 3 exits here, take the left exit to go to a separate area. (You can take the right exit but there are more enemies on that side.) Of the 4 converging spots in the middle here, go to the top one and get the Dream Shield. Now go back out the area the way you came. Go to the room directly below the center exit for the Dream Spear. Finally, take the center exit. 3F --- There's a spot above you, the spot above that contains the Dream Armor. The exit is at the top, but first get the Knight's Water which is the spot directly below the exit. Save here! I hope you have enough water. Final Room --- In this room you can turn right to see where Sancho is. Well... there he is, and he can stay there as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, talk to Alifanfaron. You will fight him, but don't bother healing, you will lose anyway. After this, you'll be in a jail cell. Turn right and keep talking to the wall with the candle on it. When you're prompted YES or NO, pick NO or you'll die (it'll be the same scene as in the church before.) Now you'll fight yourself. If you try to fight him you'll lose your own health, so push Up instead (???????) and you'll win. Go out the jail cell and you'll be back in 2F. The enemies will be gone, but if you save and reload they'll come back, so don't waste any time in getting to the top. The two rooms on the side of the jail cell contain water (I forgot which side, sorry), so get these two waters and then go back up to the top to fight Alifanfaron. With these six waters (two Knight's Water and four regulars) go back up to Alifanfaron on 3F and save. You should be able to beat him now if you heal at the right times, though you may have to reload your save a few times depending on how lucky you are in hitting him (the spear tends to miss a lot in this battle.) ****************************** Final Thoughts: Well, there's no two ways about it, this game blows hard. I do like the encompassing idea of having animations as graphics, but the loading times (20 seconds just to load a friggin sound effect) coupled with the overall slowness to do anything kills any redeemable factor the game may have had. I think this game has the worst loading of any game ever made. The technology just wasn't up to the task in 1994... what did they expect out of Mega Drive hardware anyway? It's not just that it's slow to move, but they purposely designed the maps to be as aggravating as possible, they purposely made 90% of all the maps devoid of any content knowing full well that it would take several hours to explore the entire map even though you get absolutely nothing out of it. That alone makes me hate this game and the designers of it on principle. Still, I haven't heard of other laserdisc RPGs, so I guess here you go if you really want one. I found a bug, while trying to use different items on the last boss, I used the lamp and the menu glitched, then when I tried scrolling down the menu the game crashed. This only happened to me once though, I couldn't reproduce it. If you stick the disc in a regular LD player, you'll see title cards with the name of each scene in the game flash by for one frame before the scene plays. On rare occasions you might see these in regular play as well. Mine had the names in Japanese, but I don't know what the English version is like. bakudandan@gmail.com EOF
