FINAL FANTASY iOS VERSION 1.1.0 Magic FAQ v.1 By DCRage DISCLAIMERS: This guide is the sole copyright property of DCRage and may only be published at this time on GameFAQs.com and any personal websites belonging to the publisher. This guide may be downloaded for personal use but not uploaded anywhere else or copied from to other guides without my permission. This guide is written specifically for and is based on the iOS (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) version of the game. It was written based on the latest version of the game at the time of this guide’s creation (version 1.1.0, updated August 2, 2015). While this guide can presumably be applied to the “new” version of the game available as an in-app purchase in the “Final Fantasy Portal” app, it may not be entirely accurate as it is not known if that version is the same as the original iOS version aka the “old” version. “Final Fantasy” copyright 1987, 2010 Square Enix. INTRODUCTION/ABOUT THIS FAQ: Magic is one of the key tools that allow you to proceed through the game. You can beat the game without using it, but good luck. There are a total of 64 spells available for purchase & use-32 white magic spells and 32 black magic spells. Not all characters can use all spells. A quick breakdown of who can use what magic: Fighter-NONE Knight-Select Level 1-3 white magic Thief-NONE Ninja-Level 1-4 black magic Black Belt-NONE Master-NONE Red Mage-Select Level 1-5 white magic, select Level 1-6 black magic Red Wizard-Select Level 1-7 white magic, select Level 1-7 black magic White Mage-Level 1-4 white magic, select level 5-6 white magic White Wizard-Level 1-8 white magic Black Mage-Level 1-4 black magic, select level 5-6 black magic Black Wizard-Level 1-8 black magic Also note that a character can only carry 3 spells per magic level so it is impossible for a character to have every available spell at once. If you want to swap spells you can drop spells later. You can re-learn dropped spells but it will cost you extra gil. Here is the info provided for each spell: Name-the spell’s name (note: For those who played the NES original like myself but not any updated versions or remakes, like the PlayStation versions or later, I will include the original spell’s name as a refresher in parentheses) Casters-who can use the spell Cost-cost to learn spell MP-amount of MP needed to use spell Effect-the spell’s stated effect. Actual effects depend on caster’s Intelligence, enemy’s Weakness, Resistance & Magic Defense, and to some extent caster’s Luck. If a spell matches the enemy’s Weakness then one of the following happens: For an elemental attack spell (Fire, Ice Lighting), the spell will do double damage. For other effects there is a higher chance of the spell being successful. If a spell matches Resistance then one of the following happens: For an elemental attack spell it will only do 50% damage, for non-elemental spells it will always be ineffective (useless). Tips-a more detailed description of the spell and tips on getting the most out of it Buy-whether or not you should buy it WHITE MAGIC LEVEL 1 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Cornelia Name-Cure (CURE) Casters-Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-50 MP-3 Effect-restores a little HP to one ally Tips-this spell will restore 10-50 HP to one character (your choice). It has the same effect as a potion but usually will restore less than using a potion. Good when you’re short potions or trying to save them Buy-Yes Name-Dia (HARM) Casters-White Mage, White Wizard Cost-50 MP-5 Effect-damages all Undead enemies Tips-This spell works on Undead enemies only-Ghosts, Zombies, Mummies, etc. If it looks like a ghost, zombie, vampire or has it in their name then it will work. It is completely ineffective against all other enemies-you can use them in a fight with both Undead and non-Undead enemies but the non- Undead foes will always take 0 damage. It normally will do 20-80 damage to Undead foes Buy-Yes Name-Blink (RUSE) Casters-Knight, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-50 MP-3 Effect-Raises caster’s Evasion. Can only be used in battle Tips-In the original this offered the caster a 40% evasion boost. Early on that’s significant for White Mages. Later on it can be useful for Knights until they get lighter armor. Early on it’s a good spell to have. Buy-Yes Name-Protect (FOG) Casters- Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-50 MP-3 Effect-Raises one ally’s Defense. Can only be used in battle Tips-In the original this added 8 points to one ally’s armor rating. That sounds decent but it really limits its use to bosses and those battles will present better and more pressing uses for magic elsewhere. Early on, pass on it. Buy-No LEVEL 2 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Pravoka. Your characters must have Magic Level 2 in order to acquire them Name-Blindna (LAMP) Casters- Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-250 MP-3 Effect-Removes Darkness from one ally. Can only be used in battle Tips-Sounds more useful than it is. You’re not going to face foes that afflict Dark for a while and there aren’t enough to justify it, plus the effect goes away after battle. Pass. Buy-No Name-Invis (INVS) Casters- Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-250 MP-3 Effect-Increases one ally’s Evasion. Can only be used in battle. Lasts until battle ends or character is killed, whichever happens first Tips-In the original this increased a character’s evasion by 20%. Although you can get a better version later in the game it will be quite a while and this can be a lifesaver in some battles. Very useful in early boss battles. Buy-Yes Name-NulShock (ALIT) Casters- Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-250 MP-8 Effect-Reduces damage from Lightning/Thunder spells & special attacks by 50%. Can only be used in battle. Lasts until battle ends Tips-Until you get the Ribbons late in the game this is part of the invaluable trio of Nul spells that are an absolute must. You won’t use it much until later in the game but against early bosses and when you get to the Sunken Shrine this one is extremely useful. Buy this one first. Buy-Yes Name-Silence (MUTE) Casters- Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-250 MP-5 Effect-prevents all enemies from casting spells. Doesn’t always work. Can only be used in battle Tips-This really has only situational uses early on, namely try it against Astos and hope against hope it works. It has more uses later on but even then it’s not as useful as it seems namely due to it being useless against the big bosses. Pass. Buy-No LEVEL 3 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Elfheim. Your characters must have Magic Level 3 in order to acquire them Name-Cura (CUR2) Casters- Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-1000 MP-10 Effect-restores HP to one ally (your choice) Tips-In the original this restored 32-64 HP but in this version it is much more effective-it normally will recover 80-128 HP. It will prove useful for quite a long time. A must-buy Buy-Yes Name-Diara (HRM2) Casters-White Mage, White Wizard Cost-1000 MP-12 Effect-Damages all Undead enemies. Can only be used in battle Tips-In the original this did 40-160 damage to Undead enemies. In this version the low end of the damage range is more favorable to the player as it usually will do in the 100-160 range. You can get through most of the game with this one. Buy-Yes Name-NulBlaze (AFIR) Casters- Knight, Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-1000 MP-8 Effect-Reduces damage from Fire spells/special attacks by 50%. Can only be used in battle. Lasts until battle ends. Tips-Maybe the single most important White Magic spell outside of Life/FullLife. It’s the most useful of the Nul trio and will be useful until you get the Ribbons. Must buy, get It ASAP. Buy-Yes Name-Heal (HEAL) Casters-White Mage, White Wizard Cost-1000 MP-10 Effect-Restores a little HP to all allies Tips-In the original this restored 12-24 HP to all allies. In this version the effectiveness depends on the caster’s Intelligence, meaning this becomes good to have much later in the game but by then you’ll have found items you can use to cast the spell, thus saving MP and offering more freedom for using this. Not as good early on as it sounds. The one you can go without. Buy-No LEVEL 4 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Elfheim. Your characters must have Magic Level 4 in order to acquire them Name-Fear (FEAR) Casters-White Mage, White Wizard Cost-2500 MP-10 Effect-Makes foes run away. Doesn’t always work. Can only be used in battle Tips-This is one of the most useless White Magic spells in the game. It only works on some foes and weaker ones at that. Don’t waste your gil. Buy-No Name-NulFrost (AICE) Casters-Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-2500 MP-8 Effect-Reduces damage from Ice spells & special attacks by 50%. Can only be used in battle. Lasts until battle ends Tips-Less useful than NulFire but more than NulShock, mainly because it’s used by a number of enemies besides the bosses. Make sure you have it before entering the Ice Cave. Like the other ones, get this one ASAP. Buy-Yes Name-Poisona (PURE) Casters-Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-2500 MP-3 Effect-Removes Poison from one ally Tips-This basically is the magic version of Antidote. Useful when you’re running low or don’t have any. You want to have this one at least until you get all the Ribbons. Buy-Yes Name-Vox (AMUT) Casters-Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-2500 MP-3 Effect-Removes Silence/Mute from one ally. Can only be used in battle Tips-This can come in handy for dealing with foes that use Mute/Silence...except there are just a couple and if your White Mage/Wizard or Red Wizard gets Muted then they can’t use it, so...the point? Pointless. Buy-No LEVEL 5 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Melmond. Your characters must have Magic Level 5 in order to acquire them. Name-Curaga (CUR3) Casters-Red Mage, Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-5000 MP-20 Effect-Restores a lot of HP to one ally (your choice) Tips-In the original this spell recovered 64-128 HP but in this version it is much more effective, typically restoring in the range of 200-299 HP. Useful later in the game against the tougher bosses. Buy-Yes Name-Life (LIFE) Casters-Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-5000 MP-20 Effect-Revive one dead ally (your choice). WARNING: Revived character has only 1 HP Tips-Very useful when you’re far from a Clinic, but the introduction of the Phoenix Down item, which does the same thing, somewhat limits its usefulness. Still have it as a backup plan. Remember to use Potions or Cure spells immediately on the character so they don’t get killed again immediately! Buy-Yes Name-Diaga (HRM3) Casters-White Mage, White Wizard Cost-5000 MP-25 Effect-Damages all Undead enemies. Can only be used in battle Tips-In the original this did 60-240 damage to all Undead foes. This will do about that much still. Situationally useful later in the game, namely in the Sunken Shrine, and while I always buy it and recommend getting it you don’t really have to unless you don’t have a Red Mage/Wizard or Black Mage/Wizard. Buy-Yes Name-Healara (HEL2) Casters-White Mage, White Wizard Cost-5000 MP-25 Effect-Restores some health to all allies Tips-Like Heal but restores a little more HP. How much depends on the caster’s Intelligence. Given the stronger potions in this version and increased effectiveness of the first Heal, this one is really useless. Buy-No LEVEL 6 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Crescent Lake. Your characters must have Magic Level 6 in order to acquire them. Name-Stona (SOFT) Casters-White Mage, White Wizard Cost-13000 MP-10 Effect-Removes Stone from one ally Tips-This is the magic version of the Gold Needle. Somewhat useful given it’s hard to remember where you can buy them (or find them), but once you find all the Ribbons and the Aegis Shield (assuming a Knight has the shield and not the Ribbon) late in the game this spell is then useless Buy-Yes Name-Exit (EXIT) Casters-Red Wizard, White Wizard Cost-13000 MP-10 Effect-Teleports party back to World Map from within dungeons/castles/caves. Can’t be used during battles Tips-Lost? No Way Out? Is It Hopeless? Use This Spell To Exit! That description from the original game sums up this spell, which in some areas- especially late in the game-can be a lifesaver. Be aware that it does not work in the new areas in this version that unlock after defeating each of the four fiends (the only ways out are for the entire party to get killed or find a teleporter back to the surface) Buy-Yes Name-Protera (FOG2) Casters-Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-13000 MP-20 Effect-Increases all allies’ Defense. Can only be used in battle Tips-In the original game this increased everyone’s defense by 12. Sounds more useful than it actually is. You’re better off trying to increase Evasion. Buy-No Name-Invisira (INV2) Casters-Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-13000 MP-25 Effect-Increases all allies’ Evasion. Can only be used in battle Tips-In the original this increased everyone’s evasion by 40%. The biggest plus to this improved version is it applies to everyone. Most useful against bosses and very strong foes, although if you find the White Robe this spell becomes useless as the White Robe can be used in battle to cast the spell for free Buy-Yes LEVEL 7 SPELLS Note: These spells can be purchased in Gaia. Your characters must have Magic Level 7 to acquire them Name-Curaja (CUR4) Casters-White Wizard Cost-30000 MP-35 Effect-Restores all HP to one ally (your choice) Tips-This is the best and most powerful healing spell in the game and is a must for the later battles against bosses and tougher enemies in the final ¼ of the game. Don’t go into the extra post-fiend areas without it Buy-Yes Name-Diaja (HRM4) Casters-White Wizard Cost-30000 MP-35 Effect-Damages all Undead enemies. Can only be used in battle Tips-This most powerful Harm spell can do up to, if not over, 300 damage to Undead enemies. Must-have if you don’t have a Red or Black Wizard, but except for perhaps Lich it’s really overkill and wasting valuable MP. Get it anyway Buy-Yes Note: These spells can be purchased in Onrac. Name-NulDeath (ARUB) Casters-Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-30000 MP-28 Effect-Protects all allies from instant death spells/special attacks. Can only be used in battle Tips-By the time you have the chance to buy it and later use it odds are you’ll have come across the Protect Rings, which do this and improve your defense. So this spell is all but totally useless. And it doesn’t necessarily protect against instant-death regular attacks (Mindflayers) Buy-No Name-Healaga (HEL4) Casters-Red Wizard, White Mage, White Wizard Cost-30000 MP-38 Effect-Restores a lot of health to all allies Tips-The most powerful of the Heal spells. In the old version this would have restored 48-96 HP to everyone. Actual effect depends on caster’s Intelligence but there’s a good chance it restores 100+ HP to everyone. Maybe useful against bosses and foes that like to abuse special attacks that hit everyone but usually you’ll be fine with the Healing Staff & Healing Helms if you have them Buy-No LEVEL 8 SPELLS Note; These spells can be purchased in Gaia. Your characters must have Magic Level 8 to acquire them (meaning for White & Black Wizards don’t even think about trying to get them until you get their XP up to Level 39) Name-Dispel (XFER) Casters-White Wizard Cost-40000 MP-35 Effect-Removes one enemy’s defenses against special attacks. Doesn’t always work. Can only be used in battle Tips-Sounds better than it actually is. You’ll do much better with physical attacks & elemental spell attacks instead of wasting MP and turns casting this Buy-No Name-Holy (FADE) Casters-White Wizard Cost-40000 MP-50 Effect-Damages all enemies. Can only be used in battle Tips-The ultimate White Magic attack spell and the only one that can be used on non-Undead enemies. Can do a lot of damage Buy-Yes Name-NulAll (WALL) Casters-White Wizard Cost-40000 MP-40 Effect-Reduces damage done to one ally by all magic attacks and elemental special attacks by 50% (your choice). Can only be used in battle Tips-Simply put, this is the ultimate All-in-one protection spell and is an absolute must-have for the final series of battles. Just don’t use the other Nul spells with it as it won’t have an extra effect Buy-Yes Note: This spell can be purchased in Lufein Name-Full-Life (LIF2) Casters-White Wizard Cost-40000 MP-40 Effect-Revives one killed ally with full HP Tips-This is a combo of Life & Curaja and, as you get close to the end of the game, is nothing short of beyond invaluable. As soon as you reach Level 39 get to Lufein and get this spell! Buy-Yes BLACK MAGIC Note: Unless specified, all Black Magic spells can only be used in battles LEVEL 1 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Cornelia Name-Fire (FIRE) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-50 MP-5 Effect-Deals fire damage to one enemy (your choice) Tips-Depending on all factors (Caster’s Intelligence, Enemy’s Weakness, Enemy’s Resistance, Caster’s Luck), this spell will do 5-60 damage to one foe. It’s most effective against Earth, Ice & Undead enemies and should not be used against Fire & Water-based enemies. Buy-Yes Name-Thunder (LIT) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-50 MP-5 Effect-Deals lightning damage to one enemy (your choice) Tips-Like Fire, depending on all factors this spell will do 5-60 damage to one foe. It’s most effective against Water-based enemies and should not be used against Earth-based enemies Buy-Yes Name-Focus (LOCK) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-50 MP-3 Effect-Decreases one enemy’s Evasion (your choice) Tips-In the original this increased the caster’s hit % by 10%. While the effect is much the same the hit % of your characters have been adjusted favorably for this version and, in some cases, are so sky-high that beyond maybe getting an extra hit and a little more damage the spell is all but unnecessary Buy-No Name-Sleep (SLEP) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-50 MP-3 Effect-Puts enemies to sleep. Asleep enemies can’t attack or evade attacks. Doesn’t always work Tips-This is only borderline useful in a couple of early battles. The farther you get into the game, the more enemies you’ll find with resistances to this. Basically, except in the first 1/5 of the game it’s useless Buy-No LEVEL 2 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Pravoka. Your characters must have Magic Level 2 in order to acquire them Name-Blizzard (ICE) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-250 MP-8 Effect-Does Ice damage to one enemy (your choice) Tips-Like Fire & Lightning, damage done depends on all applicable factors but this spell will do 20-100 damage. It’s most effective against Fire-based enemies and should not be used against Ice-based enemies or Undead enemies. The most powerful of the 3 elemental spells Buy-Yes Name-Dark (DARK) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-250 MP-5 Effect-Blinds all enemies, reducing their visibility. Doesn’t always work Tips-Darkness reduces enemies’ accuracy if successful. It’s ineffective against most enemies including Undead foes. You’re better off using spells like Invis on your party. Buy-No Name-Temper (TMPR) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-250 MP-10 Effect-Increases one ally’s Attack (your choice) Tips-In the original this increased one character’s weapon strength by 14. Doesn’t sound bad but by the time you’ve used it and felt the effect you’ve basically wasted a turn or two and it really won’t make much of a difference anyway. Pass. Buy-No Name-Slow (SLOW) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-250 MP-5 Effect-Slows down enemy attacks. Doesn’t always work Tips-The simple way to explain the effect is it makes enemy attacks less effective and they do fewer hits, thus less damage. This spell, when it works, is useful against bosses and enemies that do multiple hits and/or have high HP or Attack. Buy-Yes LEVEL 3 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Elfheim. Your characters must have Magic Level 3 in order to acquire them Name-Fira (FIR2) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard, Cost-1000 MP-15 Effect-Does Fire damage to all enemies Tips-A stronger version of Fire that also damages all enemies. It typically will do 50-200 damage based on all factors. Very useful against Ice & Earth- based enemies and a must for Undead foes. Don’t use against Fire & Water- based foes. If you find the Mage’s Staff late in the game you can use it to cast this spell for free, greatly increasing its effectiveness Buy-Yes Name-Hold (HOLD) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-1000 MP-10 Effect-Paralyze one foe (your choice). Doesn’t always work Tips-It sounds useful but like Sleep there are more enemies than have resistance to it than don’t, and success against all other foes isn’t guaranteed. Not worth it Buy-No Name-Focara (LOK2) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-1000 MP-10 Effect-Decreases all enemies’ evasion. Doesn’t always work Tips-In the original the effect was it increased your party’s accuracy. But here your accuracy is likely already high as it is and attacks don’t miss too often, so this spell isn’t too useful in the end. Buy-No Name-Thundara (LIT2) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-1000 MP-15 Effect-Does Lightning damage to all enemies Tips-A stronger version of Thunder that damages all enemies. It typically will do 50-200 damage based on all factors. A must against Water-based enemies but ineffective against Earth-based enemies. If you find Thor’s Hammer and/or Gauntlets later in the game you can use each of those items to cast this spell for free, greatly increasing its effectiveness Buy-Yes LEVEL 4 SPELLS Note; All these spells can be purchased in Elfheim. Your characters must have Magic Level 4 in order to acquire them Name-Blizzara (ICE2) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, ,Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-2500 MP-18 Effect-Does Ice damage to all enemies Tips-A stronger version of Blizzard that damages all enemies. It typically will do 70-220 damage based on all factors. A must against Fire-based enemies but ineffective against Ice-based & Undead enemies. The most powerful of the level 2 elemental spells. If you find the Black Robe late in the game you can use it to cast this spell for free, greatly increasing its usefulness Buy-Yes Name-Confuse (CONF) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-2500 MP-15 Effect-Confuses all enemies. Doesn’t always work Tips-Confused enemies may still attack you, but there is a high chance they will attack other enemies or even themselves. A confused enemy will turn and face in the opposite direction. It sounds more useful than it actually is, and it’s more a “for fun” spell. Like the other effect-inflicting spells too many enemies are resistant to it to make it useful, and if you find the Wizard Staff late in the game you can use it for free Buy-No Name-Haste (FAST) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-2500 MP-15 Effect-Doubles one ally’s attacks (your choice) Tips-This spell speeds up an ally’s attack rate, causing them to do double hits when attacking, greatly increasing the damage dealt to foes. Invaluable against bosses and very tough enemies. A must-have Buy-Yes Name-Sleepara (SLP2) Casters-Ninja, Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-2500 MP-15 Effect-Puts one enemy to sleep. More effective than Sleep. Doesn’t always work Tips-A more effective version of Sleep, meaning...absolutely nothing. Doesn’t get around Resistances. Don’t buy Buy-No LEVEL 5 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Melmond. Your characters must have Magic Level 5 to acquire them Name-Firaga (FIR3) Casters-Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-5000 MP-30 Effect-Does Fire damage to all enemies Tips-The strongest version of Fire, it typically will do 80-300 damage to all foes. An absolute must for Undead enemies as very few can survive one round of this spell, also good against Earth & Ice-based enemies but ineffective against Water-based enemies. Buy-Yes Name-Teleport (WARP) Casters-Black Wizard Cost-5000 MP-5 Effect-Teleports party to the last floor of a dungeon that you were on. Can’t be used in battle Tips-It’s important to note this won’t warp you directly up or down one floor in a dungeon. It will merely return you to the last floor you were on. Example: You’re on Floor 2, you go to Floor 3, you return to Floor 2 and cast Teleport-You’ll go back to Floor 3. A less-effective version of Exit but a good Plan B. Can’t be used in the special post-fiend dungeons. Also note one very important error often made in FAQs/Guides here-BLACK MAGES CANNOT BUY THIS SPELL! You have to be a Black Wizard Buy-Yes Name-Scourge (BANE) Casters-Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-5000 MP-28 Effect-Summons poison gas to kill all enemies. Doesn’t always work Tips-Sounds much better than it is, like a lot of the other status-effect spells a lot of enemies have resistance to it, making it all but useless. If you find the Razer later in the game you can use it to case this spell for free. There is only one reason to buy this spell-Tiamat. Every once in a while this spell will actually work on him for a surprise instant kill Buy-No Name-Slowra (SLO2) Casters-Red Mage, Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-5000 MP-18 Effect-Slows one enemy (your choice). Doesn’t always work Tips-A more effective version of Slow with the downside of it only affecting one enemy. Isn’t enough of an improvement over Slow to justify its use Buy-No LEVEL 6 SPELLS Note: All these spells can be purchased in Crescent Lake. Your characters must have Magic Level 6 to acquire them Name-Thundaga (LIT3) Casters-Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-13000 MP-35 Effect-Does Lightning damage to all enemies Tips-The strongest version of Lightning, it will typically do 80-300 damage to all enemies. An absolute must before entering the Sunken Shrine and the many Water-based enemies residing within. Don’t face Kraken without it. Buy-Yes Name-Death (RUB) Casters-Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-13000 MP-30 Effect-Kills one enemy (your choice). Doesn’t always work. Ineffective vs. Undead foes Tips-Sounds much better than it is. Problem is all the foes you’d like to use it against are resistant to it. Buy it just to fill out your magic slots if you want Buy-No Name-Quake (QAKE) Casters-Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-13000 MP-32 Effect-Causes an earthquake that kills all enemies. Doesn’t always work Tips-This is the absolute worst and most useless spell in the game. It’s only useful against the weakest enemies and absolutely useless against Undead enemies, flying enemies, and countless others. Never buy this spell. NEVER Buy-No Name-Stun (STUN) Casters-Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-13000 MP-20 Effect-Paralyzes one for (your choice). Paralyzed foes cannot attack, use spells or evade attacks. Doesn’t always work Tips-Like all the other effect-inducing spells, it sounds better than it is, just because many enemies including Undead enemies have resistance to it. Pass Buy-No LEVEL 7 SPELLS Note: These spells can be purchased in Gaia. Your characters must have Magic Level 7 in order to purchase Name-Blizzaga (ICE3) Casters-Red Wizard, Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-30000 MP-40 Effect-Does Ice damage to all enemies Tips-The most powerful of the elemental spells, this spell usually does in the range of 120-400+ damage. It can take out almost all Fire-based enemies in one shot and is fine against Water-based enemies too. Don’t use it against Undead or Ice-based enemies though Buy-Yes Name-Break (BRAK) Casters-Black Wizard Cost-30000 MP-30 Effect-Instantly kills one foe (your choice). Doesn’t always work Tips-This is maybe the best of the effect-inducing spells, although it’s use is still very limited. The main reason to get this spell is it has a slight chance to work on Tiamat-not very often will it succeed but the chance of a one-shot kill on this tough fiend more than justifies the cost of the spell Buy-Yes Note: These spells can be purchased in Onrac Name-Blind (BLND) Casters-Black Mage, Black Wizard Cost-30000 MP-25 Effect-Blinds one enemy (your choice). More effective than Dark. Doesn’t always work Tips-Again, more effective doesn’t translate to worth it. The same resistances apply and the effect is not worth the effort or cost Buy-No Name-Saber (SABR) Casters-Black Wizard Cost-30000 MP-25 Effect-Increases caster’s attack & accuracy Tips-In the original, this increased the caster’s hits by 40% & damage by 15%. Not the most useful for a Black Wizard but there is an item that casts the spell when used. It’s found late in the game and if you come across it then being able to cast the spell on anyone by using the item makes it much more useful without the restrictions Buy-No LEVEL 8 SPELLS Note: These spells can be purchased in Gaia. Your characters must have Magic Level 8 to acquire them Name-Stop (STOP) Casters-Black Wizard Cost-40000 MP-30 Effect-Stops time for all foes, paralyzing them. Doesn’t always work Tips-The most effective of the stun/paralyze spells simply because it affects everyone. Has the usual issues but being able to affect all enemies makes it worth having just in case Buy-Yes Name-Warp (ZAP!) Casters-Black Wizard Cost-40000 MP-35 Effect-Instantly kills all enemies. Doesn’t always work Tips-You won’t have too many chances to use this spell after you get it, and it’s not too effective, but try it for fun on weaker enemies if you get the chance Buy-Yes Name-Kill (XXXX) Casters-Black Wizard Cost-40000 MP-40 Effect-Kills one enemy (your choice).
