INTRODUCTION .............................................. =============================================================================== I came across this game unexpectedly; I wanted to try some old styled game, and this was one of the "apps gone free", so I got it. I wasn't really expecting much, but holy crap. I love this game. This is normally a paid app (~$2). I got it for free, but had I known how good this game was, I would have paid for it. Too bad this game isn't available for the Android. As you can probably tell, this is a 2-D racing game. Except that instead of using cars, you are using boats (the mechanic is still similar). However, unlike many racing games, you can literally attack your opponents with guns. In short, this is basically a 2-D Mario Kart. If you liked Mario Kart (where you can shoot down other racers), you will like this. =============================================================================== 02. BASICS .................................................... =============================================================================== The game mechanic is pretty simple, and the tutorial when you try for License C does a very good job in teaching you the controls. You press the Accelerate button to accelerate (releasing the button slows you down), and you have a button (or two) for attacks. You can change the controls in the "Extras" option in the title options. However, the game itself is difficult to master. As you go through the race tracks, you will encounter numerous hills. These are typically used to launch yourself into the air (perhaps to get Power-Ups or avoid obstacles), but being in the air usually counts against you since it slows you down. Releasing the button in the air makes you drop to the water faster (to minimize the slow down), but it also makes you "bounce" on the water. So pressing the Accelerate button at the right time is imperative (depending on the height). And similar to Mario Kart, you get punished for being in the first place -- in this case, inability to pick up Power-Ups. There are six different Power-Ups on the tracks (some of them are in the air): Yellow Arrow in Yellow Circle: Speed Boost Green Cross in Green Circle: Health Recovery Yellow Light in Yellow Circle: Damage Boost Yellow Bullets in Blue Circle: Full Ammo Grey Bullets in Blue Circle: 50% of Ammo Blue Shield in Purple Circle: Shield Further details. As I said before, this game is quite similar to Mario Kart. However, there are numerous differences: 1. It's 2-D (duh). That means you can't go sideways or anything. However, you cannot collide with each other, so that works pretty well. 2. Second, you can upgrade your boats (limited customization). All boats have different parts you can upgrade, and each parts can be upgraded up to five times. These can increase certain stats, or enable certain abilities (active or passive). 3. Each boats has their own unique weapons (with different amount of ammo), and they are generally used to damage other racers. The weapons usually don't slow down the targets, but if the targets take enough damage (you see the boat pixels being chipped), they get destroyed. They respawn after a second (or so), but they have to start again from the stand-still position. 4. Some races have different victory conditions. They mostly require you to win the race, but some races start the races with everyone with some ammo, whereas other races disable all weapons. There are some races where the victory condition all about the kill count. 5. The ground (err, water) changes shapes when you land from the air, which can affect the nearby boats. There are two in-game currencies -- Gold and Tool. Gold is used to buy boats and the Workshop hangers, whereas Tool is used to buy/upgrade parts. You get some of both after each races, but the amount differs depending on how well you did in the race. Each events has different amount of Gold you can win, but all events have the same amount of Tool you can win. A side note: Arcade mode is the practice mode. If you unlocked a license, all boats from that particular class can be used to practice. However, they are all in non-upgraded form. =============================================================================== 03. CAREER MODE ............................................... =============================================================================== Career mode is the campaign mode. Here, you must first get the necessary license in order to participate in the races. For example, in order to participate in the B races, you need to get the B License. In order to get the B License, you need to win certain C races. And so on and so forth. I am not going to list every individual license tests and races. The clear conditions are listed right on the event description. Each races starts you off at the last place (don't ask me why). And in order to move on to the next races, you need to place at least 3rd in the race. You have infinite chances for each of the races. Even if you lose the race, you still get some Gold and Tool, which can be used to buy/upgrade the boats. If you get 1st place in all tests or races, you get one-time Gold bonuses. Each classes has different amount of races (aka events): C-Class: 9+4 events B-Class: 20+4 events A-Class: 30+4 events S-Class: 40+4 events Master races cannot be played until you earn the next class license. -------- Shop -------- Here, you can buy new boats or upgrade the bought boats. As previously stated, Gold is used to buy new boats, whereas Tool is used to upgrade the existing boats. As the races become more difficult, you earn more Gold from winning. However, Tool comes at the same rate for all races. Each boats must first be unlocked before they can be purchased. The conditions for unlocking them is displayed when you select them. Each boats has limited potential that can be upgraded (yellow bar), so be aware of it before you purchase the boat. -------- Workshop -------- Here, you can make your own custom boats. After each races, you get Gold and Tool, but you also get random pixels and/or weapons. You can use those pixels and weapons to make your own boats. Each of these pixels and weapons has their own classes (ex: "common", "rare", "epic", etc). The higher the rarity, the better. Before making the boat, you must first buy the hangars (up to three), then you literally draw the boat. You can use up to 50 "stat" pixels for each classes (so if you use 50 pixels, you get a C-class boat, whereas if you use 51 pixels, you get a B-class boat). Up to 200 stat pixels can be used to make the boat, and each stats maxes out at 110. Smart distribution of stat pixels can make some of the most absurdly powerful boats. Then again, you need to first get the good stat pixels. You can use non-stat pixels as much as you want without penalty. The stats are: Top Speed: The maximum speed of the boat. Acceleration: The speed of the boat to reach its top speed. Downforce: Weight - heavier boats have easier time preventing the "jump". Braking: The deceleration speed of the boat. Armor: The amount of damage the boat can take before being destroyed. You can also attach up to two guns/active skills and one passive skill. -------- Endless/Time Trial -------- I didn't really play with these, but I can guess. In fact, you can probably guess what these are, too. =============================================================================== 04. ADS ....................................................... =============================================================================== This game has in-app-purchases (Gold and Tool), as well as Ads. However, since this is a paid applications, none of the ads are mandatory. In fact, you can beat the game and unlock everything without any IAPS nor ads. So why did I decide to make a section for the ads? Well... 1. Right before you start the race (when the screen displays all your enemy boats), there is an option on the bottom left corner that says, "Power-Up!" (assuming you are connected to the network). If you click that, an ad automatically plays (20~30 sec), and once the ad ends, you randomly get one of the four power-ups. - 50% of the ammo - 100% of the ammo - Shield - Speed Boost These can REALLY help you when things get difficult, especially when you have low-leveled boats, and you are being stingy with Gold/Tool. 2. After the race is over, you can click the "+" button next to Gold or Tool. In these, you can choose to watch the ad for free Gold/Tool. Once you watch them, you get random amount of Gold or Tool, depending on your selection. However, you must wait 15 minutes before you can watch another ad. This is one of the better ways to earn Tool currency. =============================================================================== 05. TIPS ...................................................... =============================================================================== Here are some tips in order to play this game effectively. ---------------- Shopping Tips ---------------- - Do not try to buy everything from the start, just because you have some spare Gold and Tool. These become far more important in the later parts of the game. Only buy what is necessary. - Tool is FAR more difficult to obtain than Gold. At least, in terms of necessary usage. So if you are able to use the Ads at the end of the race, get the Tool bonus. - When you test for the license, try to get the gold trophy for all tests. After all, you cannot change the test boats, and you get extra Gold when you win the gold trophy for all tests. - When you can move on to the next racing class, DO NOT immediately buy the next class boats. As soon as you buy one of these, you can no longer use the old boats. For example, if you have Sand Storm (C-class boat) and you can move on to the B-class races, do not buy any B-class boats, since doing so prevents you from using Sand Storm in the B-class races. Fully-upgraded Sand Storm is better than most default B-class boats, and sometimes even fully-upgraded B-class boats. Especially in the beginning. Wait until you unlock a good B-class boat that you intend on fully-upgrading. ---------------- Racing Tips ---------------- - Pressing the Accelerate button right after the signal turns green gives you a boost start. However, if you press too early, you start really slowly. - If you are struggling for some races, watch the ad in the beginning of the race to give yourself a random Power-Up. - I typically avoid getting Speed Boost. Speed Boost makes you more prone to jumps, which works against you most of the time. - When you land from the air, hold the accelerate button about a half second before hitting the water. This reduces the "bounce" effect. - Being only slightly ahead of the other boats will get you killed, since the enemy boats will attack you mercilessly from behind. Instead, you may want to stay right behind the enemy boat and destroy it before moving on. This is especially important in the later parts of the game. =============================================================================== 06.
