MONSTER GALAXY: THE ZODIAC ISLANDS Guide by Giatm =============================================================================== [01] Introduction =============================================================================== Monster Galaxy: The Zodiac Islands is an iPhone game developed by Gaia Interactive that sends you hopping from island to island to thwart the plans of the nefarious King Othos while simultaneously capturing the lovable mogas (very similar to pokemon...in fact...this whole game is very similar to pokemon; but hey, who am I to judge?). Since this game operates on fairly simple mechanics, and those mechanics aren’t all thoroughly explained within the game, you may find many of your questions answered sufficiently in the Basics or Tips and Tricks sections. It is also worth noting that I will be making this guide assuming you want to play through this entire game WITHOUT wasting real world money on it. I will make mention of what you can buy and what it is good for, but I will not be devoting a whole lot of time to it...sorry. =============================================================================== [02] Disclaimer =============================================================================== If you want to take any part of this document and use it (either as a quote or a paraphrase) please give the proper credit to your source (namely...ME!). As far as using this for personal reference, feel free to save this puppy, print it out, or just come back to it over and over from gamefaqs. PLEASE DO NOT send emails with regards to my spelling or grammar. If you can make out the purpose behind the words, don’t bother telling me I’m wrong. There are plenty of blogs where you can play that game on.<== See that right there? Don’t tell me how stupid I am for making that error. I don’t care. =============================================================================== [03] Version History and Updates =============================================================================== V1.0 This was all done in one sitting on (06-20-2012) and is fairly complete in everything other than the walkthrough itself. Go figure. V1.5 Some editting of content, included an "Appearance of Mogas" section, and have included 10 of the 14 islands in the Walkthrough. Next update should finish the content and include some of the missing moga as I dedicate more time to finding those that are missing from the guide. =============================================================================== [04] Table of Contents =============================================================================== **> Introduction. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[01] **> Disclaimer. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[02] **> Version History . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[03] **> Table of Contents . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[04] **> Basics. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[05] ==>Controls. . . . . . . . . . . . . .[05a] ==>Menus . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[05b] ==>Items . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[05c] ==>Types of Mogas. . . . . . . . . . .[05d] ==> Appearances of Mogas . . . . . . .[05e] ==>Time Energy . . . . . . . . . . . .[05f] ==>Battle. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[05g] ==>Rewards . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[05h] ==>Level Caps and Progression. . . . .[05i] ==>Enemy Levels. . . . . . . . . . . .[05j] ==>Stars . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[05k] **> Walkthrough . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[06] ==> Mainland: Island #1. . . . . . . .[06a] ==> Aries: Island #2 . . . . . . . . .[06b] ==> Taurus: Island #3. . . . . . . . .[06c] ==> Gemini: Island #4. . . . . . . . .[06d] ==> Cancer: Island #5. . . . . . . . .[06e] ==> Leo: Island #6 . . . . . . . . . .[06f] ==> Virgo: Island #7 . . . . . . . . .[06g] ==> Libra: Island #8 . . . . . . . . .[06h] ==> Scorpio: island #9 . . . . . . . .[06i] ==> Sagittarius" Island #10. . . . . .[06j] **> Tips and Tricks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[07] **> Real Money. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[08] **> Glitches. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[09] =============================================================================== [05] Basics =============================================================================== {Controls}[05a] This is an iphone game, thus everything is done by tapping on the screen. {Menus}[05b] Perhaps there will be more on this in a later update. These are all explained in game and as long as you have a basic understanding of how role playing games work in general you will not find these menus remotely difficult to maneuver. {Items}[05c] There are three "items" in this game that you will want to familiarize yourself with (two in particular, and one in passing if you want to go through this game on the "free route.") 1. Starseeds: these are for all intents and purposes pokeballs. They are used for capturing mogas. More on that in just a bit. 2. Blue Coffees: these serve several purposes. The primary use of blue coffees is that they return your time energy to full (100). This is by far the BEST use of a blue coffee. However, they can also be used to refill a moga’s health bar to max as well, either from the Team Menu or during battle. 3. Moga Cash: this is an in-game currency that requires real world money to purchase. It can be used to purchase certain mogas directly from the Team Menu. It can also be used to play Lucky Moga where for 7 MC you get the chance to win 1 of 3 prized, 2 including some combination of the three items mentioned above and 1 offering a special moga. Since there is the possibility of winning more than 7 MC as a prize, technically you could earn more MC without paying real world money...but the initial investment is still required and you would only be getting 1-3 extra MC each time if you were lucky. IMHO...not worth it. {Types of Mogas}[05d] Unlike pokemon, these mogas never change into a more powerful form. However, there are different qualities of mogas that can be caught. Higher quality mogas with generally have better stats such as more health and greater damage output. It is worth noting here that occasionally you will see 2 mogas of different quality (normally by 1 degree of quality) that at the same level have the same amount of health. In every case I can think of the moga of higher quality will in that case have greater damage output. It is then entirely possible that mogas of different quality may share the same damage output but have different amounts of health. Some follow up on this is required. In general you will like mogas of higher quality more than mogas of lower quality. Something to keep in mind: higher quality mogas are HARDER to catch. We are talking 50+% chance to capture low health Beginners and Commons, all the way to 5% (yes...5%) for low health Legendaries. Here are the different qualities: Beginner: terrible stats. Unless you have no other choice (like at the very beginning of the game) I would not recommend putting these poor soles in your team at all unless you are looking for some insane challenges or think they are too cute to leave behind. Common: not much better than beginner. Once you get enough higher quality mogas these can go by the way side. Chance to catch at low health: around 60% Uncommon: not good, not terrible. Starting to see a pattern here? Once you acquire enough higher quality pets, feel free to forget about the lowbies. Rare: at the beginning I wanted all my rare+ mogas to be at max level. Turns out they are not particularly rare. That goal would take a lot of time and blue coffees. Chance to catch at low health: around 25% Super Rare: for the majority of the game these guys could be considered your bread and butter units. Keep them leveled up and you won’t be disappointed. Chance to catch at low health: around 15% Epic: here is where it’s at. Not as strong as legendaries, but certainly strong enough to merit being on your active roster. Chance to catch at low health: around 10% Legendary: Keep these guys leveled up. They are good. Chance to catch at low health: around 5% {Moga Appearances}[05e] There are 13 islands and 134 mogas to catch. Each island has a certain number of obtainable mogas. This number is indicated on the bottom of the island's map. For instance, on the first island (Mainland) there are 10 mogas to catch. This value is presented in fraction form, so if you have caught 5 of the 10 mogas on the Mainland, the value will read 5/10. When you've caught them all, it will read 10/10. Each island is broken into separate areas, each with its own name. For the purposes of this guide we will call them "zones." Each zone has certain moga that can be caught there. For instance, no matter how many times you battle in the second zone of the Mainland (called Poets' Vale), you will always encounter a moga named Lobo. However, some zones have more than one moga that can be obtained there. Since you usually only encounter one moga per battle (with the exception of certain zones, normally the final ones on each island), you will have to revisit some zones to catch all the mogas on the island. There are some quests that require you to catch certain moga (such as Jin in "Mainland"). If you accidently kill the moga, you are able to retry the quest, so do not fear on that note. During most quests you will not be allowed to capture the mogas you are battling, usually because you are supposed to defeat them or because they belong to another tamer. During the Walkthrough portion of this guide I will be indicating what moga you will encounter in each zone that you can CAPTURE. I will not discuss the moga you battle during quests if they are not capturable. {Time Energy}[05f] Like many Facebook games, Monster Galaxy operates on a time management system. There is a blue energy bar at the top right of your screen when you are on the Main Map or one of the Island Maps that indicates how much energy you currently have available. When it is fully charged you have 100 energy. Every battle that you initiate will cost you a certain amount of energy. Every 2 minutes you replenish 1 energy. That means that if you work your way down to zero energy, it will take 3 hours 20 minutes to fully replenish. You do NOT need to be playing the game for the energy to replenish; please go outside and enjoy the sunshine while it recharges for you. Of course you can pick the game back up and play without the bar being full, as long as you have the required energy for your next battle. Again, blue coffees recharge this back to full. See why THIS is the BEST use of blue coffees? Battles on the FIRST island will cost you 5 energy, except for the final zone on the first island which will cost 10 energy. Battles on ALL other islands will cost 15 energy, except for special zones (usually the last zone, but some islands may have 2 special zones) which will cost 30 energy. That sounds terrible, but there is a silver lining. Check out the [Rewards] section just below [Battle]. *Warning!!! There is a known bug where the energy bar does not replenish. This usually happens to me at night where I wake up the next morning and I am still at zero energy. After I check in on it and feel frustrated that I’ve been cheated out of 100 energy it generally goes back to working properly. Any extra information on this would be most appreciated!* {Battle}[05g] This is the meat of the game, so there are a lot of details in here. If you are just starting the game, there are lots of good things in this section. After you select a zone on one of the islands and pay the required time energy you will initiate a battle. You start with your team of mogas, which can consist of up to 3 monsters, on the left side of the screen and the opposing creature(s) on the right side of the screen. You can only see the first moga on the other side if there are more than one, but you CAN see the outline of the circle indicating that there are more monsters behind. For example, if you are fighting a team of 3 mogas, you will see the first one, and there will be 2 partial circles behind it’s Zodiac Sign (explained below) indicating that there are 2 more mogas after the first. If your moga is More Effective against the other moga your Zodiac Sign will be green (the enemy’s will be red). If your moga is neutral against the other moga BOTH Zodiac Signs will be white. If your moga is Less Effective against the other moga your Zodiac Sign will be red (the enemy’s will be red). Once battle begins you will have 4 seconds to choose what you would like to do. You have 4 options: 1. Attack is the option on the bottom left bar. When you choose this the following will happen: a. A partial ring will show up on the screen that is red on the bottom and becomes green on the top. At the very top is a line indicating a "perfect" hit. A marker will work its way from the bottom of the ring to the top and beyond. Where that marker hits determines the amount of damage you inflict on the enemy. Landing in the Red will result in VERY low damage (like 10% of maximum output), landing in the Green will result in GOOD damage (like 50-60% of maximum output) while landing on "Perfect" will result in 100% maximum damage! b. You will notice after passing the "perfect" spot the colors QUICKLY go from green to red. It is not advisable to allow the marker to go beyond the "perfect" spot. You can still manage Good damage, but that window of opportunity is rather small. c. How fast the marker travels the ring is determined by the level of your enemy compared to your current moga’s level. Your enemy will never be more than 5 levels below your strongest member, but if it IS 5 levels below, the marker moves slowly enough to where getting the "perfect" can be done with fair consistency. The closer the enemy is to your current level, the faster the marker moves. If the enemy is above your level, that thing moves really fast. 2. Zodiac is the option on the bottom right bar. a. As you may have noticed (it is in the game’s title) every moga has a zodiac sign. This is roughly the same as a pokemon’s type. While the details of who is effective against whom can be cumbersome, let’s put it in simpler terms here. 1/3 (or 33%) of mogas will be Effective against your moga, 1/3 will be Weak against it, and 1/3 will be neutral to it. See, not so complicated. If I feel up to it I will make a chart, but suffice it to say I've run through the whole game without caring too much about the symbols. b. If you are Effective against the enemy, the Zodiac will do damage very similar to a "Perfect" hit. If Neutral, it will roughly do the same as a GOOD hit. If WEAK, it will do about half of a GOOD hit. While not entirely accurate you get the general idea. c. Once you choose to attack using the Zodiac your Zodiac Sign will appear on the right. Once that happens you have 6 seconds to tap on your sign enough times (about 20) to initiate the attack. If you fail to complete this (because you are not paying attention, are 3 years old, or you have limited use of your hands) your attack will do NOTHING and the enemy gets a free turn. How generous of you. 3. Capture is the option in the middle of Attack and Zodiac bars. a. The ball in the middle of the other two bars indicates you want to capture the moga. It is important to note that you will not always have the option to capture a moga. You cannot capture the same moga twice, you cannot capture a moga at 100% health, and you cannot capture certain mogas during story battles. This is indicated by the ball being "see through" or colorless. b. If the ball is colored in then you are welcome to try and capture the opposing moga. You will then have 2 options. i. Use the equivalent of a Master Ball by spending 10 MC and you will capture your foe without fail. ii. Use a starseed that indicated the percent chance of catching the critter. Lower enemy health will improve your chances, but high quality mogas will always be hard to catch. 4. Items is the option on the bottom right indicated by the brown satchel. Here you can use a blue coffee to restore the health of your moga (try REALLY hard to AVOID this...it is a waste of a perfectly good coffee that could be used to buy you more TIME!!!). You can also use this menu to tell you how many starseeds you have. If you don’t chose ANYTHING after 4 seconds you forfeit your turn and the enemy gets a free swing at your pet’s face. {Rewards}[05h] After you finish a battle your team will be awarded experience. Every moga will get a set amount for each moga (this amount is determined by the enemy’s level compared to that of your highest leveled team member). The greater the level compared to your team, the greater the experience. BONUS EXPERIENCE: I thought that might get your attention. Each moga you battle with will also get some extra experience for each successful hit it inflicted on an enemy. This can be verified by repeating a certain battle over again while killing it in a different number of hits. The more hits, the more experience. However, since the enemy is also getting to hit you more times it is generally worth your while to kill creatures as quickly as possible. MORE BONUS EXPERIENCE: this is just fun now. If you capture a moga during your battle you will be rewarded with an experience multiplier. That multiplier increases based on the quality of the moga you captured. More specifics to follow, but in general expect to get a multiplier of about 3x for capturing a moga, up to maybe 4x for a epic or legendary. **Note: There are battles where you fight more than one moga. In the case that you manage to capture more than one moga in a battle, you will only get one multiplier. Catching two common mogas will give you 3x experience, and not the 6x you might be hoping for. Monetary Rewards: there is a small chance during normal battles to be rewarded with extra loot. Occasionally a starseed with be "found" during the battle. A good way to get extra starseeds is to battle on the first island (since it only costs 5 energy per battle) over and over again in hopes of nabbing an extra starseed. This is also a good way to grind for experience if your team needs a few more levels before continuing. Blue Coffees can be found as well, but they are considerably more rare. MORE Monetary Rewards: there is a chance to find an extra blue coffee after winning a battle in one of the ending zones (the ones that cost more energy). It might just be luck but it appears that there is an increased chance of finding these if you capture a moga during the fight. This is still not a 100% chance. NOTE: this is the silver lining referred to earlier. {Level Caps and Progression}[05i] As you progress through the game you will find that you can no longer level up your mogas past a certain level. Level Caps are in place that will only be lifted by finishing the current island (done by beating each zone). To progress to the next island you will have to complete 2 requirements. One is to finish the island you are on, and the second is to have captured enough mogas. You can find these requirements on all of the shaded islands that you cannot reach yet. Just tap on the island and it will tell you how many mogas you need to advance to that island, as well as how many mogas you currently possess. You will likely find that once you get towards the end of the game you may have to return to old islands and find some of the mogas that you have missed. That is where the walkthrough section will be helpful to you. {Enemy Levels}[05j] If you go straight from one island to the next without taking advantage of the raised level cap you will usually find that enemy mogas are about your level or just a little below it. This is to keep new islands more challenging. If you raise your mogas enough, enemies from earlier islands will always be 5 levels below your strongest team member. I am assuming that if you are not sufficiently leveled up then the enemies in previous islands will just be at the level they were the first time you saw them. As shared in the Battle section, the greater your level is compared to your enemy’s, the slower the marker moves on the Attack Ring. This means that if you are trying to level up weak creatures by teaming them with a strong creature, be sure you do NOT use them in battle, unless the enemy is near death or you don't mind taking a hit or two. The enemy’s level will be based on your strongest moga. Sample Team: lvl 20 moga, lvl 10 moga, lvl 10 moga. Enemies from lower level islands will be lvl 15, so while your strongest member will likely not have too much trouble with it, your lvl 10’s may get killed off if you don’t switch them back out. {Stars}[05k] Every battle will yield 1-3 stars. 3 stars indicates a great battle, and you can guess what 1 star indicates. If you are level grinding the stars don’t really matter. The stars DO matter if you want to catch the best mogas around. Every island has a special moga that you can only catch during a quest that becomes available when all of the zones on the island have 3 stars. From the island map you can see how many stars you have compared to how many there are total. Just tap on each zone to see how many stars you've acquired there. There are 2 things that determine if you get 3 stars. 1. You MUST land at least 1 perfect hit from the attack option. Zodiacs do not count as perfect hits, even though they may do the same damage. 2. You MUST defeat your enemy in a certain number of turns. That number varies based on how many enemies you are fighting and what quality they are. Since higher quality mogas have more health, you are allowed more turns to finish them off. However, the number of turns is not indicated in game. You will, however, get a feel for it as you progress. To help achieve these 2 requirements, always try to be several levels above your enemy. This may require some level grinding on your part (check the tips and tricks section). It also helps to have a moga that is effective against the enemy. The reason for this is that the zodiac attack will cause extra damage, and you can use that to take as few turns in the fight as possible. Remember that you also need to land a perfect hit, but once you meet that requirement effective zodiacs are a great way to make sure you don’t spend too many turns. Many people find they can’t get past 1 star on certain zones (usually the last one on each island). This is because those fights often involve more than one enemy. Even though they land that one perfect attack, they end up taking too many turns to finish the battle and get the dreaded 1 star rating. If this is happening to you, level a team of effective mogas a few more levels (after getting at least 1 star in every zone you will have opened the next island, raising your level cap). The only frustrating thing beyond that is that it feels like you wasted 30 energy if you don’t get your 3 stars. ALSO, do NOT try to multitask by trying to get a 3-star rating while also trying to catch a high quality moga. Because the percent chance of catching high quality mogas is so low, you will likely spend several turns trying to catch the thing and you will not win the fight quickly enough for the 3 stars. =============================================================================== [06] Walkthrough =============================================================================== This section will eventually tell you what mogas can be captured in each zone for each island. This section will not discuss the quests because I feel it will clutter this section up without giving you any vital information for progression. The quests are very simple to follow, and zones that have current quests in them will be indicated on the island map by a yellow circle if you have access to that zone (the accessible zones are usually white) or by a green lock if you do not have access to that zone yet. Note that if you come across a different moga than the one I've described, you probably are on a quest at that location. If you battle there again you should run into the moga(s) I've described. Some zones on each map are home to more than one moga. Since I an not spending 100 energy in EVERY zone while making this walkthrough (yet), I am missing some mogas for certain zones. Feel free to email me with any CAPTURABLE mogas in zones where I do not have them placed. To help me keep track of how many moga I have identified in this walkthrough, any moga that was caught in an earlier zone has the word REPEAT next to it. If you find that helpful that is great, if not, please excuse it because it was certainly helpful to me :-) {Mainland: Island #1}[06a] Stars: 24 total Quests: 11 Total Mogas: 10 The Family Farm 5 energy Moga: Tabby (common) Poets’ Vale 5 energy Moga: Lobo (beginner) Corkscrew Gulch 5 energy Moga: Coanon (Common) Pioneer Ridge 5 energy Moga: Mimosa (Common) Poughkeepsie Pass 5 energy Moga: Mimple (Common) Woodland Path 5 energy Moga: Mimosa (Common) REPEAT Upper Cascades 5 energy Moga: Trufflefant (Common) King Otho’s Outpost 10 energy Moga: Brolo (Common) **Leviathan (Uncommon) is catchable during a story quest on this island.** **The 10th catchable moga is Jin (Super Rare), who only becomes available after you master the Mainland (earn all 24 stars) There is 1 more catchable moga on the island. It is home to the beginner moga Lobo, offers 400 base experience instead of the usual 350 or 320, and the zone only costs 5 energy per battle. This is not the FASTEST way to level, but it is Energy efficient, especially for grinding purposes. It is worth noting that after the first island this guy will always be 5 levels lower than the strongest member of your current team. Even at high levels this guy can be 2-shotted on a regular basis with stronger mogas. {Best Level Grinding Part 2} Since capturing mogas gives an experience multiplier of about 3x, and most regular battles cost 15 energy, using the walkthrough to find mogas you have not captured yet and capturing them will award you roughly the same experience as the first method, requires the same energy, and takes only 1/3 the time. The downside to this method is that using it exclusively will likely drain your starseed supply. You always want to have lots of starseeds handy for the higher quality mogas that are much harder to catch. {Best Spot to Grind Starseed} Same as Level Grinding Part 1, and for the same reasons. Easy kill, low energy cost, and your team will be leveling up for the next island while you’re at it. {Best Ways to Grind Blue Coffee} As mentioned before, you almost always get a Blue Coffee for capturing a creature in the final zone of an island. While this is not necessarily repeatable, you can at least get 1-2 on each island this way (often the final zone will have you fighting more than one moga, so if you capture each one in separate fights you can use this strategy more than once on that island). ***I just "found" a blue coffee from one of the 25 energy zones. Thus, they*** can be awarded after battles from zones costing 25 or 30 energy. Each island has a special quest that requires you to get 3 stars on EVERY zone in that island. That quest is followed by a quest where you can catch a special moga (usually either super rare or better). One of those quests will reward you with 2 Blue Coffees. Score!! There is a Daily Prize you can collect every 24 hours from the Tamer Menu. Blue Coffees (1-2) or Starseeds (2-5) are awarded each time. Pray for the coffees, but starseeds are more common. {Recovering Health} There are several ways to regain health. 1. Level Up: this fully restores your health. This is by far the BEST way to do it. If a teammate is low on health, try teaming him up with 2 strong mogas and battling until he levels up. Good strategy for grinding. 2. Use Blue Coffee: in my opinion the WORST use of a blue coffee. They are relatively rare and wasting them on a single bar of health is not nearly as useful as fully restoring your Time Energy. 3. Take a Nap: from the team menu you have this option on any moga that has lost health. The time required to fully heal increases as you progress through the game, based on how high the moga's level is. The time is NOT determined by how much health is lost. I know it says that in game...they lie. {Earning 3 Stars} This is mentioned in detail in the Basics section under Stars, but here is an outline: 1. Be several levels higher than your enemy. You deal more damage, your attack bar moves slower so you can get at least one perfect hit (one of the requirements for 3-stars). 2. Win the fight in as few turns as possible. You don’t need perfect hits every time, but if you have 1 or more really bad hits (in the red) you are almost certain to lose the 3-star rating. 3. Effective Zodiac attacks do about as much damage as a perfect hit, but they DO NOT count as a perfect hit for the 3-star rating. That means you still NEED to do a perfect hit, then you can use effective zodiac attacks to finish them off if needed. Zodiac attacks replenish after a couple normal hits, so the same moga can do a zodiac attack more than once during the same battle. Note that switching mogas does NOT negatively affect your rating. It’s all about the number of turns you use. You do get more turns to kill high quality mogas (because they have more health). =============================================================================== [08] Real Money =============================================================================== While I could dedicate some time to putting the prices of the purchases you could theoretically make, these items are readily available for viewing from the SHOP tab found in the MENU from the main screen. You can just look in there if those things interest you. Personally I don’t want to spend one red cent on a free game, so those options are not for me. *While progressing through the game I've found that more and more of the moga on the later islands are rare or better. While thematically that makes sense, it also means that you will be using quite a few more starseeds in the latter portion of this game. With that in mind, if you were to invest any kind of real money into this game, I would only recommend that you do so to purchase starseeds. How many to purchase is up to you, and would largely be determined by how much you level grind (more battles means more chances to randomly pick up starseeds) and whether or not you want to capture all 134 moga. =============================================================================== [09] Glitches...for better or worse =============================================================================== Again there is the glitch where your time does not correctly recharge. I find this usually happens at night (central time for me). Once I check on it and my blood pressure is sufficiently high, it goes back to working properly. There is also a known issue that people tend to have right when they download the game. In the initial download players only get to play through the first island and then they find that they cannot proceed to the next island. This happened to me and I’ve seen it posted in several other forums as well. My guess is that there might have been a trial version of the game where only the first island is available and that is all that loads the first time around. Best way I know to fix it is to pop out of the game and pop back into it. This will usually initiate more downloading of content. Be forewarned, this takes several hours to completely download and you may be best served trying the play the game again tomorrow after you know the second download has started.
