I recommend playing it on a tablet because there's more room for your fingers and it's easier to see when objects are coming at you. Released by Rat River Game Studios in 2015 and developed by Benjamin Pierce ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.2 Story ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The story in this game is fairly self-evident. You play as Officer Bumble as you chase a criminal (known as a McBurgler Brother in the game) through a number of different levels, all the while the criminal attempts to stop you by throwing pies, bowling balls and chickens (referred to in the game as Chickenators). Officer Bumble clearly takes inspiration from a well-known Atari game called Keystone Kapers, although there are some major differences such as the lack of elevators, the inability to move backwards, and the criminal throwing objects at you, rather than simply dodging shopping mall obstacles. =============================================================================== ===== 2.0 THE BASICS ========================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.1 Game Start ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the main menu, you can choose "Training", or one of 4 difficulty levels: - Easy - Normal - Hard - Hardcore You can also choose to view leaderboards, assuming you've logged into Facebook from within the app. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The controls for Officer Bumble are fairly straightforward: Press anywhere on the left hand side of your tablet to duck, and anywhere on the right hand side to jump. Running is automatic and you always go in one direction (depending on which floor of the level you're on). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.3 Training ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Training mode looks a heck of a lot like the holodeck from Star Trek. This game screen doesn't scroll, so Officer Bumble is running on a treadmill at all times. There is a machine on the right hand side of the screen (known in the game as the Robothrower 2000) that will lob obstacles at you for certain parts of training. The training sections are as follows: 1) Duck 3 times 2) Jump 3 times 3) Avoid 3 pies 4) Avoid 3 bowling balls 5) Jump 3 low flying Chickenators 6) Jump 3 high flying Chickenators 7) Dodge 10 consecutive objects. Each time something hits you, the counter resets 8) Infinite mode: You can continue to dodge objects forever. Object speeds start to vary at this point. You can quit out to the main menu at any time. I recommend that beginners start off with training mode, especially to get the hang of dodging Chickenators as they're quite difficult to get used to. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.4 Leaderboard ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You need to be logged into Facebook in order to view the leaderboard or have your scores posted. From within the leaderboard screen, you can compare your high score and total # of criminals caught (over the lifetime of the game), against everyone else in the world. Additionally you can filter to only your Facebook friends and/or only Hardcore mode. The nice thing about this leaderboard is that Android and iOS players are shown on this leaderboard, so it's not segregating players based on device. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.5 Points/Free Men ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every time you dodge an object you get 50 points. Every time you catch a McBurgler Brother you get 1000 points. You get a free man every 15,000 points and there's a maximum of 5 men that you can have at any given time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.6 Difficulty Settings ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are 4 different difficulty levels. I'll explain the main differences here: EASY - Criminal won't get too far ahead of you. He'll stop and laugh at you until you get close to him. - Criminal doesn't throw Chickenators. - The maximum # of items the criminal can throw in each pattern is 4. - You start with 4 lives instead of 3. - Criminal will stop throwing objects once you reach a certain distance to him. This distance is much larger than the other difficulties. - Weapon come at you slower than other difficulty levels. - Criminal gets less "speed boosts". NORMAL - The criminal will go off-screen, however he slows down to about 75% of his normal running speed when he's off-screen. - Criminal throws a few Chickenators, but not as much as normal or hard. - Maximum # of items the criminal can throw is 6 or 7. - You start with 3 lives. - You have to get closer to the criminal than on easy before the criminal stops throwing things at you. - Weapons come at your faster and with more random velocities. - Criminal gets a few extra "speed boosts". HARD - The criminal never slows down. - Criminal throws a lot more Chickenators. - Maximum # of items the criminal can throw is 8 or 9. - You start with 3 lives. - You have to get really close to the criminal before he stops throwing objects. - Weapons can be thrown extremely fast and with more random velocities. - Criminal gets quite a few "speed boosts". HARDCORE - Almost the same as hard, except getting hit once ends your game. =============================================================================== ===== 3.0 QUICK TIPS ========================================================== - Be patient: It takes a few games to get into the groove, so it's sometimes good to warm up on easy or normal before attempting to tackle the higher difficulties. - The Chickenators are a lot easier than they look. If a Chickenator is flying at you're head, it'll always swoop down to attack your feet at the last minute. Conversely, if a Chickenator is flying towards your feet, it'll always swoop upwards, toward your head, at the last minute. - There's a "cool down" period after you get hit. If Officer Bumble is just getting up from a hit, and something else is coming at you, you have about half a second before it can hit you. The main thing is to not panic, and if it's < half a second don't even bother trying to dodge it - just let it pass through. - The criminal will sometimes "speed burst" if you're getting close to him. It's best to get him to speed burst near an escalator as it'll slow him down and get you inside of his "speed burst" zone so he doesn't do it again. - Rather than watching for obstacles, watch the criminal's animations. You'll quickly learn which animation spawns which type of weapon. It's kind of like driving and looking down the road instead of the road straight in front of you. =============================================================================== ===== 4.0 CRIMINAL AI ========================================================== I'll do my best to explain the McBurgler Brother nuances. - In almost all cases, the criminal AI is completely random (with some boundaries, depending on difficulty level). This means that you can't formulate a strategy based completely on patterns. - The criminal doesn't just throw random objects at you. There is a pool of about 15 different patterns, with some of the harder patterns only showing up on the harder difficulties. - The criminal won't throw Chickenators once you're closer than half a screen or so. - Everything the criminal throws at you is at a random velocity (with a min and max), however no object will ever go faster than one that's already in place. This means that you don't have to worry about objects crossing paths (IE: a bowling ball in front of you and a pie above the bowling ball). - The criminal will stop throwing things at you if you get within a certain distance of him. This distance changes depending on the difficulty level. I guess this is so that you have a fair chance to react. - The criminal can do random "speed boosts" if you get close to him (the distance seems to be when he yells "yikes!"). The criminal has a total # of speed boosts per level (between 1 and 4, depending on difficulty) and a maximum # of speed boosts per floor. The criminal can never do a speed boost on the rooftop. - The criminal will speed boost randomly and there's no way to tell if he will or not. The randomness seems to depend on the difficulty level. It also seems that the higher the floor, the lower the chance of a speed boost happening. =============================================================================== ===== 5.0 STAGES ========================================================= The game consists of 4 different types of levels: - Shopping Mall - Bank - Museum - Casino The levels all consist of 4 floors, and gameplay settings don't change between levels. The levels seem to be mainly for aesthetics. The first level is always the shopping mall (most likely in a nod to Keystone Kapers which takes place in a shopping mall). After the first level, you'll get a random level, and you'll never get the same level twice in a row. =============================================================================== ===== 6.0 RANDOM ========================================================== - There are approximately 12 coffee shops in the shopping mall that looks very similar to Starbucks. - In the bank level, there are posters indicating that the criminal is also the bank CEO. - There are a few NPC's in the game. 2 different bank guards (fast asleep), a bank teller, and 4 different elderly people at the casino. NPC's don't actually have any gameplay effects. - In the museum, there are 4 or 5 classical paintings that only show up one time each, whereas other parts of the game tend to re-use art assets. - The Chickenator's face will change from happy to angry when he gets close enough to you. You really have to look closely to see this. - In the book store and coffee shop, there's a poster of Rat River Game Studios hanging on the wall. You have to look extremly close to see this however. - The police chief looks suspiciously like Toronto Police Commissioner, Bill Blair. - There are rumours that the game was originally supposed to have "fatalities" like in Mortal Kombat, however these were cut due to concerns about the game rating and parental complaints. =============================================================================== ===== 7.0 LEGAL / MISC. ======================================================= ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.1 Version History ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 19: Version 1.0 - - - - - - - - - - - Initial version.
