This FAQ will help you with the identification, location, and abilities of every soul power in the game. The "tactical soul system" has a lot to it, and it is totally up to the player to get the most out of it. There are four main types of souls: a) Bullet Souls (Red) These souls perform attacks on your enemies at a fixed MP cost. Activated by pressing Up + B at the same time. b) Guardian Souls (Blue) These grant you certain transformational, defensive, and offensive abilities. Activated by pressing (sometimes holding down) the R button. They consume MP as long as they are turned on. c) Enchanted Souls (Yellow) These power up and affect your status, such as Strength + 1, Luck + 1. They are always active if you have them equipped. d) Ability Souls (Grey) These are always active (unless you turn them off), and grant abilities such as the Double Jump, or the Slide. Some are activated by pressing the L button, while others are done automatically (Double Jump by simply jumping twice). You can equip one Bullet Soul, one Guardian Soul, and one Enchanted Soul at any given time. Ability Souls do not need to be equipped - they are simply turned on and off in the 'ability' section of the menu. Each and every enemy you come across has a chance of dropping its soul when you defeat it (even some bosses - if you only fight a boss once it will always drop its soul because you don't get another chance when it is a regular enemy, but the Legion boss is the only exception so read his section on the list for further info about this). Other souls can be found by exploring the castle and breaking "soul holders". These containers always hold certain important souls to your quest, and always drop the same soul. The chance of dropping a soul is random for most enemies, so you may have to kill certain enemies quite a few times to get them. Ways of capturing souls a bit easier will be discussed in the "Soul Collecting Strategies" part of the FAQ. You can collect up to 9 of every soul in the game. This is mainly for trading purposes with a game link cable, but having more souls also makes the Headhunter soul more powerful (every 16 souls you get, the stronger effect the Headhunter soul has on your stats). With all of this in mind, you are ready to go soul collecting! 2-Frequently Asked Questions-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Q: Why only a soul FAQ? A: Well, I feel that collecting and using souls is the most important part of the game, so I will just stick to that. Q: Where can I find the **insert soul name here** soul? A: Check the Soul List section of this FAQ. Be sure to use Ctrl + F to search through the FAQ quickly and easily. Q: What are the most useful souls? A: Check the Useful Soul section of the FAQ. Q: Why should I collect 100% souls? A: Well besides the bragging rights and the ability to use a wide variety of soul powers, once you have 100% of the souls in the game, the most powerful item in the game can be collected. The Chaos Ring will appear in the Chaotic Realm for you to get. You can find it in one of the small side rooms where you can see the space in the background (check all of them till you find it). This ring makes it so you have an infinite ammount of MP! Very useful indeed. Q: I missed the Legion soul! / Legion didn't drop his soul / Is there another way to get the Legion soul? A: Many people are having trouble with this. For starters, Legion will only drop his soul if you knock off all 4 sections of his shell before you defeat his core. Besides starting the game over again if you saved after the battle, you will also get another chance to collect the soul if you start a "New Game Plus" with your save file. Once you get the full ending (see the Useful Souls section of this FAQ for more info on this), you have the option of choosing a bat shaped symbol above your save file. This starts a New Game Plus, where you will have all of the items and souls from your old game to use as you play through the game again (minus the ability souls like Double Jump and Slide). This means that you will fight Legion again, so you get another chance to get his soul. Q: You missed something! / There are errors! / I do this instead... A: Those aren't really questions, but if there is a genuine mistake or you have a strategy you think is better, feel free to e-mail me and I can check it out. I will fix errors pointed out and if a strategy is better than what I have posted I will add it, with credit given to you. redlimit@hotmail.com <- My e-mail address 3-Soul List-Complete Detail Guide--------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This list is sorted by monster number (found in the monster data section of the menu screen). The Ability Souls are listed after. The format is as follows: 1. Number, Name 2. Soul Type (Bullet, Guardian, Enchanted, Ability) 3. Information (In-game description) 4. MP Cost 5. Locations of the castle the monster is found 6. The "best" location to find the soul (area where the monster is alone or in large numbers that is generally easy to get to). This will be described using the castle map as a reference, using things like save points and warp points as guides. If there is no "best" location listed, it means that the enemy can only be found in one area or room. To keep things simple, castle areas will be referred to in short form (example: Castle Corridor will be called 'Corridor' - these will always have an upper-case first letter). 7. Since you are killing enemies over and over again, you can do some things to speed up the process. Also remember that a fast way to check which souls you have is to open up the 'Enemy' section of your pause menu. If you have a monsters soul, you will see a red check mark in the upper right of its data page (and its name will be a darker colour on the quick list). 1) Buy the Soul Eater Ring from Hammer This is the most effective way to increase the chances of getting a soul, but man this thing is not cheap! It costs 300000 gold! By the time you can buy this, you will already be done most of the game, so the souls won't help you as much. Even with the Tsuchinoko soul to make things cheaper, it is still a lot of money (240000 gold). If you can afford it though, it GREATLY improves the chances of a soul dropping (increases chances by 10% to 20%, which is really good). Money Maker #1 A good way to get a lot of money quickly is to do the following. Equip the Rare Ring, and go to The Arena save point. Save your game, and head right into the first arena challenge. Right inside the door will be two Lubicant enemies. Defeat them, and hope they drop Muramasa swords. This sword can be sold for about 30000 gold. About 20 or 30 minutes of entering and exiting this room killing Lubicants should provide you with enough Muramasa to sell to be able to buy the Soul Eater Ring. This is also a decent way to level up if you can stand the tedium of it. Money Maker #2 Another way to get money is by using the Mimic soul. Select this enchanted soul and make your way to the first save point in the Clock Tower (the one with the spiked pit and the Medusa Heads right outside of it). With the Mimic soul, every bit of damage you take will make your money increase - so just jump into the spiked pit and get hit. When you are about to die, simply get out and go to the save point to restore your health. Continue this until you have enough money. 2) Increase your LCK status You can do this by equipping several different pieces of armor or equipping certain Enchanted Souls. More luck means a higher chance a soul will drop. The Ghost Dancer soul will increase your LCK by 4, and the Gremlin soul will increase it by 8. Weapons and armor like Death's Scythe also increase your LCK. 3) Find the right area to hunt When looking for a specific soul, the key is to find a room where one of a few things is happening: A. The enemy you want is alone in the room B. There is a lot of that kind of enemy in the room C. The enemy is very close to or right beside an exit in that room If the enemy is alone, simply kill it, exit the room and come back. Repeat until you have the soul. If there is a lot of the enemy, kill all of them before you exit and repeat. If they are close to an exit, kill the enemy and quickly exit - then enter again and repeat. All three of these methods help speed up the process greatly. 4) Battle your enemy wisely With weaker enemies this won't be a problem, but when you work up to the stronger enemies that take more than one hit, it pays to be prepared. Use your monster data on the menu screen to see if the enemy is weak against any elements you can use, and make sure you know the attack pattern of the enemy. For monsters that move around quickly or are hard to hit, use Bullet Souls that cover a lot of area. Remember, the faster you can kill the enemy, the less time it will take to get its soul. 5-Useful Souls---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This section will go over some of the more powerful and useful souls in the game. It is important to note that each soul does have a use and if you want to use another soul, by all means go for it! Using different souls is some of the most fun in the game, so experiment and see which ones you like best! 1) Souls needed to get full ending 105 Flame Demon 96 Succubus Giant Bat You need to have those three souls equipped before and during your entire battle with Graham in order to continue on with the events of the game leading to the good ending. You can take them off when you are done the battle. Refer to the soul list for the locations of these three souls. On a related note, if you have these three souls equipped, you can fire off the Flame Demon's bullet soul when you are in bat form. This is a useful way to get around and attack enemies at high speed, but watch your MP as this will use a lot. 2) Souls needed to get through waterfall in Underground Resivoir Undine 44 Curly OR 49 Devil OR 55 Manticore You will need Undine so you can stand on top of water to start. Stand on the far left side of the screen and use any of the three transformation souls (Curly, Devil, Manticore), and your resulting speed should carry you through the waterfall to the Eversing armor and access to the Forbidden Area. 3) Soul needed to get past Chronomage (Rabbit with the clock) Galamoth You obtain the Galamoth soul after you explore the rooms that are past the Legion boss in the Underground Cemetary, so you won't be able to get past the Chronomage until much later in the game. Don't worry about it until you get the Galamoth soul. 4) Useful Souls 107 Headhunter This soul will give you a large boost to all of your stats (except for Luck), which is based on how many souls you have collected. For every 16 souls you collect, the Headhunter will boost your stats a little bit more. Notice that you can only collect up to 9 of each soul in the game, but the stat bonuses count for souls over that ammount. So if you collect 20 Bat souls, it will still make a difference even though it says you have the maximum of 9. There is a limit to the Headhunter's power though. Once it starts giving you a +33 point boost to all of the stats, it will not get any stronger. The best place to quickly amass souls later in the game (once you have the Black Panther soul) is in the first area of the Underground Resivoir. The place you are looking for is the small room that is directly to the right of the first save point of the game (looking at the map that is). It is a small area above the first long water hallway that has many Merman enemies in it. Quickly dashing back and forth in and out of the room will rack up many Merman souls. This is a fast way to get the +33 bonus from Headhunter. Note: You do not have to have the Headhunter soul equipped for it to get stronger - it will automatically get stronger as you collect more souls even if you don't have it on at the time. 60 Lightning Doll This is arguably the most powerful Bullet Soul in the game, even with its hefty MP cost. It covers a very wide range, deals multiple hits, and is available fairly early on in the game. Definitely worth picking up. 78 Alura Une This soul is great as a Guardian Soul as you can refill your HP as you do other things. It does hit the MP fairly hard, so try to equip things that increase your INT stat or your MP recovery rate. 20 Giant Ghost This is powerful for its cheap MP cost. It will reflect many projectile attacks back at the enemy (and it will damage them). It makes several bosses much easier to defeat. 86 Killer Mantle This bullet soul allows you to defeat several enemies very quickly. It can kill Iron Golems and Red Minotaurs in one hit, as well as many other enemies. Be careful though, some enemies will get healed a LOT by this attack, so experiment with it on different enemies. 108 Death You can't miss this soul, but that doesn't mean it is bad! This soul is great for providing cover from Medusa Heads or Fleamen. The flying blades will clear a path for you (especially useful in the Arena challenge with the conveyor belts and Medusa Heads). 96 Succubus This is one of the very useful souls that allows you to gain 5 HP back every time you hit something (it can be an enemy or a candle). It costs no MP to use and it is active all the time once equipped. Very handy. 89 Red Minotaur This soul will be needed if you wish to beat Boss Rush mode fast enough to get the three extra items. It weighs in with a hefty MP cost of 150 though, so you will probably want the Chaos Ring or Rune Ring equipped when you use it. 58 Medusa Head While at first you may not think the ability to hang in mid air is all that great, it does allow to to defeat several bosses much easier. Against Balore, you can simply hover beside his eye and hit him repeatedly. 47 Cocatrice At first this soul may not seem useful, as it fires at an akward angle and has a short range, but this attack can make several difficult enemies simple to defeat. Many enemies will be turned into stone by this attack, making them completely helpless. You would be suprised at what kinds of enemies can be turned to stone. Disc Armors, Manticores, Bomb Armors, and most kinds of Golems can be turned to stone for easy ways to defaeat them. Give it a try! 6-End of FAQ / Credits-------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Credit Given: -Thanks to Brian for the hint about killing Iron Golems All Castlevania names, characters, and references are copyright Konami.
