I don't visit them too often, but I decided, after seeing the confusion on this game's forum, to write a FAQ of my own. This is my first FAQ, and if you see anything wrong or would like to contribute to it, send me a message at my e-mail (jgreenlee@speakeasy.net) or you can IM me on AIM (Hiryuu55) if I'm on. NOTE: If you send me an e-mail with info, please include your GameFAQs nickname, it helps when putting it in the credits section. ====================================================================== 2.Basics ====================================================================== This game isn't like a regular fighting game. When holding the heavy attack button, the character will block light ki blasts, heavy ki blasts, super ki blasts, light attacks, and heavy attacks. When you release the heavy attack button after blocking, your character will lash out in a powerful attack that moves your opponent. This attack is very useful. If you hit your opponent right, you can knock them towards the ground for a longer combo, and sometimes you may knock them into surrounding landscape features (Rocks, Cliffs). If you hit a light or heavy ki blast with this, it will be deflected, and depending on how you hit it, it may even go straight back to your opponent. While using heavy attack, your character is invulnerable to light ki blasts and light and heavy attacks. If you time it right, even a slow character can counter-attack. Light Attacks Light attacks are good for countering. When holding the light attack button, the character will block light ki blasts, light attacks, and heavy attacks. When you release the light attack button after blocking, your character quickly strikes the opponent. This attack can also deflect light ki blasts. This attack doesn't move your opponent very much, so you can use it several times to make a combo. You can even follow up the light attack with a heavy attack for a very strong combo. When light attacking, your character is invulnerable to light ki blasts, but as soon as they finish the attack, you have to attack again or block, or else you're going to get hit. Charging Using the charge button is useful for several different things. There are exceptions, but for the most part, using the charge button causes your character to power up. During this time, the percentage of ki underneath their health rises, and they are vulnerable to attacks. If you are holding a directional button when you hit the charge button, your character will dash very quickly towards the opponent. When holding the charge button, there are many things you can do, which will be discussed later on. Instant Transmission Using the L-Button during combat causes your character to switch with the next character in the lineup. If you hold a directional button while doing this, the characters will use up 25% of your energy to appear in a certain spot near the enemy. Holding up while doing it will cause your character to appear above the enemy, holding down while doing it will cause your character to appear below the enemy, etc. Goku can do this without a teammate, but he still uses energy, and can only do it at level 3. Life Meter This runs down as you get hit, and when you are using overdrive. When it is completely depleted, your character falls and cannot be used any more. If it is the last character, you lose the match. Energy Count This is the number directly below the character's health. This number rises when charging and falls when you use certain moves. Your energy can also go up if you strike an enemy, even if they block. Light attacks give varying amounts of energy, depending on how many times you have already hit. The first light attack will give 1 energy, the second will give 2, the third will give 3, the fourth will give 4, and the fifth will give 1, reseting the cycle. If you hit with a light attack multiple times, each hit will still give the normal amount and will not raise the amount of energy the next attack gives. So if you hit once and get 1 energy, then hit again with a two-strike move, it will give a total of 4 energy, and the next attack will give 3 energy for each hit. Heavy attacks give 3 energy. Dr. Gero and Android 18 get different amounts. They begin the cycle at 2 for light attacks and end it at 5. Their heavy attacks will give 6 energy. Dr. Gero charges at an extremely slow rate, and Android 18 can't charge at all. If Dr. Gero is hit by a ki blast while charging, he will absorb the energy and take no damage. Guard Meter This is the large bar at the top of the screen. When it moves towards a character's life bar, they are losing their balance. If you use an attack that knocks the character down, the bar will glow, and they will be unable to move or block until it reaches the center again. It moves towards a character if they block, and away from them if they attack. If you attack enough, the bar will move to the end of the enemy's side and they will become stunned for a while. You can use this to make large combos. Ki Blasts While holding the charge button, pressing B will fire light ki blasts. One alone will not be very useful, but if you fire several ki blasts consecutively, you can use them to lower the enemy's guard meter or do a bit of damage. Pressing A instead will fire a heavy ki blast. This blast can't combo unless the enemy is stunned, because it has a very long charge time. If you hold the A button down, the character will charge for a longer period of time and fire a larger blast for the same amount of energy, and occasionally they will fire a specialty blast, like Krillin and Frieza's Destructo Disk. For the most part, light ki blasts take 7 energy and heavy ki blasts take 20. Certain characters have exceptions to this. All ki blasts can be stopped with a heavy block, including super ki blasts. Super Ki Blasts These are what the arrows are for underneath the character's name. If you have enough energy, which is usually 50%, and you press A and B while charging, the character will glow and fire a strong ki attack. The arrow tells you which ki attack you'll do. If you're to the left or right of the character, you'll do a different move than the one you would use above them. Each character also has a 'signature move' where the game will stop, the character's portrait will show, and they'll fire a powerful blast. These are usually the same as 50% ki blasts, but with 100% energy instead. Some characters have attacks that don't do damage, like Ginyu's body switch. Super ki blasts can change for each character form. Dashing There are two ways to dash, both of which can be used to get closer to the enemy. On is to simply double-tap the direction you want to dash. This can be used to get away from an enemy or move to the other side to hit them in a different direction. The other way is to hold a directional button and charge. You'll use 10% energy, but you'll dash much faster. The latter is called Bukujutsu. Throws Each throw is different, but they're all preformed by getting close to the opponent and pressing A and B together while moving towards the opponent. Some throws will do damage, like Android 18's. Some will have different effects. Krillin's will stun, Dr. Gero's, will absorb health into energy, and Buu's will turn the enemy into a doll. Each character has a different throw, and even among the characters, the different forms will have varying throws. Most throws will stun the opponent directly in front of you, so you can unleash a super ki blast, and there's usually very little time to start blocking. Overdrive/Kaioken This technique drastically increases the damage of a character, but it comes at a great cost. Overdrive is done at 100% energy by pressing the L-Button while charging. Not all characters have this. For most of the characters, overdrive is kaioken, but for characters like Frieza, it's simply a boost of power. Gohan's overdrive is a bit different, see his character notes. Kaioken runs out after 20 seconds, and a timer will count down the last 10. It can also be deactivated buy pressing the L-Button while charging again. Attack Cancellations This is a difficult maneuver to properly use, but it can help in some situations. To cancel a ki blast, you can just counter it with one of your own. Depending on how many hits it does, it can even last after the cancellation and hit the opponent. Each combo hit of a ki blast will cancel one combo hit on the other. For instance, Frieza's light ki blast does 3 hits, so if you cancel with it, you can cancel 3 other light ki blasts or cancel one and hit the opponent twice. This way, a Super Kamehameha can break up a regular Kamehameha and hit the waiting opponent without any blocking. If there are any other maneuvers I should be covering, just send me an e-mail. ====================================================================== 3.Menus ====================================================================== These are the menus and what they do. This is a brief outline of the menus, which will be discussed in more detail later on. I've been using internet sources, and the attack names kind of vary from place to place. Most of the attacks don't have English names, so I'll use what I find. I don't pretend to know Japanese, so don't ask. If you think something's wrong or missing, send me an e-mail (jgreenlee@speakeasy.net). Go to the move descriptions section if you want to know what each move does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Goku ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Goku is one of my favorite characters. At level 3, he has instant transmission, so he can use the L-Button teleport without a teammate. You can use this to make really big combos. His throw doesn't do damage unless they hit the ground. Level 1 (Goku) Overdrive - Yes Throw - Goku grabs the enemy's legs, spins around, and throws them in a direction when you press A. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kamehameha Super Kamehameha Above None Genki Dama Below Kamehameha None Level 2 (SSJ Goku) Overdrive - No Throw - Goku grabs the enemy's legs, spins around, and throws them in a direction when you press A. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kamehameha Super Kamehameha Above Ki Blast None Below Kamehameha None Level 3 (SSJ2 Goku) Overdrive - No Throw - Goku grabs the enemy's legs, spins around, and throws them in a direction when you press A. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kamehameha Super Kamehameha Above None Instant Trans. Kamehameha Below Kamehameha None ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gohan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Gohan has some very short range, but he moves forward with each attack to make up for it. He can bounce enemies off the ground for small combos. His level 3 regular attacks are a combination of level 1 and level 3 Goku's. If young Gohan is on a team and the other team members are all dead, he enters his overdrive, Super Saiyan Rage, and flashes purple. There's no time limit on this overdrive, and it doesn't drain health. Level 1 (SSJ Gohan) Level 2 (SSJ2 Gohan) Overdrive - See Special Notes Throw - Gohan kicks the opponent in the head. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kamehameha Super Kamehameha Above None Super Kamehameha Below Kamehameha None Level 3 (Mystic Gohan) Overdrive - No Throw - Gohan punches the opponent in the face and stuns them. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kamehameha Super Kamehameha Above Kamehameha None Below Kamehameha None ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Piccolo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Piccolo can also easily bounce enemies off the ground. His super ki blasts are great. If you can hit with all of the super makankosappo or even the regular one, you can get the opponent's health down very quickly. His heavy ki blasts only take 16 energy. If you fire an un-charged heavy ki blast from below, it stops after a short distance and lingers in mid-air. Level 1 (Piccolo) Level 2 (Piccolo + Nail) Level 3 (Piccolo + Kami) Overdrive - No Throw - Piccolo reaches forward, grabs the opponent's face, and pulls himself toward the opponent, punching. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Makankosappo Super Makankosappo Above Chobakuretsumaha None Below Hell Zone Grenade None ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Krillin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Forget everything you learned about Krillin from the show, because he's better than most of the other characters. He can ground bounce very easily, and 5- and 6-hit combos are normal for him. Kakusandan is a very devastating attack, and he even gets Genki Dama. If you charge a heavy ki blast and Krillin is below the opponent, he will fire downwards and boost himself up towards the opponent for 5% energy. If he is above the opponent and you charge a heavy ki blast, he will fire a Destructo Disk for 25% energy. His ki must be over 15% for the ki boost jump. Level 1 (Krillin) Overdrive - No Throw - Krillin uses a Solar Flare from above the opponent and stuns them. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kakusandan None Above Gohan Blast None Below Multi-disk None Level 2 (Krillin) Overdrive - No Throw - Krillin uses a Solar Flare from above the opponent and stuns them. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kakusandan None Above Tien Column None Below Multi-disk None Level 3 (Krillin with King Kai's techniques) Overdrive - Yes Throw - Krillin uses a Solar Flare from above the opponent and stuns them. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kakusandan None Above Genki Dama Genki Dama Below Multi-disk None ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vegeta ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Vegeta doesn't have good range, so if you try to counter with a heavy attack, he'll often miss completely. He's not too good at ground bouncing, either. In my opinion, not one of the best characters. Vegeta's heavy ki blasts costs 25% energy but do more damage. Level 1 (Vegeta) Overdrive - No Throw - Vegeta gives the opponent a gut punch. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Final Flash Super Final Flash Above Galic Gun None Below None Bakuhatsuha Level 2 (SSJ Vegeta) Overdrive - No Throw - Vegeta gives the opponent a gut punch. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Big Bang Atk. Super Final Flash Above Galic Gun None Below None Bakuhatsuha Level 3 (Majin SSJ2 Vegeta) Overdrive - No Throw - Vegeta gives the opponent a gut punch. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Final Flash Atomic Blast Above Galic Gun None Below None Energy Field ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trunks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Trunks has intense heavy attacks. They're slow and powerful, and can knock the enemy across the entire screen. His un-charged heavy ki blasts are also powerful, but vanish after a short distance. They stay longer if they are deflected, though. Level 1-3 (SSJ Trunks) Overdrive - No Throw - Trunks brings out his sword and does a quick 5-hit combo, finishing it up with a small burning attack. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Burning Atk. Super Burning Atk. Above Burning Atk. None Below None Final Flash ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Captain Ginyu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Ginyu is quite slow, but his Guido throw is good. I don't use him too often, because his has trouble making ground bounce combos, and his super ki isn't too great. The obvious exception is, of course, Body Change. A little-known fact about Body Change I got from wudi is that you actually exchange stats with the opponent. Use level 1 Ginyu and Body Change with someone level 3, and you'll be just as strong as a level 3, but they'll get bumped down to level 1. This also means it's a bad idea to use level 3 Ginyu against a level 1 opponent. If you use Body Change at 100% energy, you'll also exchange energy levels. Your opponent will be left with 0% energy, and you'll have whatever they had. His light ki blasts costs 8% energy and are homing, and his heavy ki blasts cost 16%. Level 1 (Ginyu) Overdrive - No Throw - Ginyu gives the opponent a pile driver. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Milky Cannon None Above Crusher Ball None Below Body Change Body Change Level 2 (Ginyu and Ginyu Force) Level 3 (Ginyu and Ginyu Force) Overdrive - No Throw - Ginyu calls in Guido, who uses his time freeze on the enemy, stunning them for a while. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Recoome None Eraser Cannon Above Jeice None Crusher Ball Below Body Change Body Change ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Frieza ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Death ball, if you can pull it off, is insanely good. His finger beam is great, and he has a good throw. Frieza is one of my favorite characters. His ground bouncing is non-existent, though. If you charge a heavy ki blast while below the opponent, he fires a destructo disk for 25% energy. His light ki blasts cost 16% energy and are very fast finger beams. His overdrive lasts until you switch characters, and cannot be deactivated. Level 1 (Frieza) Level 2 (Metal Frieza) Level 3 (Frieza) Overdrive - Yes Throw - Frieza uses a trap ball, encasing the enemy in ki and tossing them to the ground. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Ground Wave None Above Flaming Headbutt Death Ball Below Psychokinesis None ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Gero ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Dr. Gero can't charge fast enough to be useful. It's over 10 times slower than anybody else's, but it's not supposed to be used for that. If you are charging and are hit with a light or heavy ki blast, Gero absorbs massive amounts of energy. This and his throw are his chief methods of getting energy. Level 1 Gero gets no energy from charging. His heavy ki blasts cost 16% energy, and the un-charged form starts off slow if fired from the left or right. His light ki blasts cost 6% energy, and also start off slow, but are homing. Since Dr. Gero is an android and androids don't produce ki, he has no aura around him when he uses bukujutsu. Level 1 (Dr. Gero) Level 2 (Dr. Gero) Level 3 (Dr. Gero) Overdrive - No Throw - Dr. Gero drains energy out of the opponent with his hand, and does damage as well as gaining 50% energy. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Hell's Flash Super Hell's Flash Above Shogekiha Eye None Below Shogekiha Hand None ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Android 18 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Android 18 can't charge, but she makes up for it with her ki. Both her light and heavy ki blasts are absolutely free, so you can endlessly shoot the opponent with ki. They do less than normal damage, though. Since Android 18 is an android and androids don't produce ki, she has no aura around her when she uses bukujutsu. Level 1 (Android 18) Overdrive - No Throw - Android 18 grabs the opponent and knees them in the stomach. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Energy Ball Super Energy Ball Above Energy Ball None Below Energy Ball None Level 2 (Android 18) Overdrive - No Throw - Android 18 grabs the opponent and knees them in the stomach. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Energy Ball Super Energy Ball Above Energy Ball None Below Android 17 None Energy Barrier Level 3 (Android 18) Overdrive - No Throw - Android 18 grabs the opponent and knees them in the stomach. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Energy Ball Super Energy Ball Above Android 16 None Hell's Flash Below Android 17 None Energy Barrier ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cell ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Cell's heavy attacks are quite nice, but his super ki isn't too great. One of my favorite attacks he has is the downward elbow, because you can keep doing it if they bounce off of the ground. He has instant transmission at level 3, so he can use it without a teammate, like Goku can. Level 1 (Perfect Cell) Level 2 (Perfect Cell) Level 3 (Perfect Cell) Overdrive - No Throw - Cell crushes the opponent's torso several times. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kamehameha Super Kamehameha Above Energy Field None Below Kamehameha None ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Buu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - I don't use Buu a lot, but a lot of his attacks are good. Level 3 Genocide attack is nice, and his regular attacks aren't nearly as slow as in the first two levels. It should be noted that I found no difference between the damage of the 50% and 100% Genocide attacks. All three levels of Buu regenerate health at a slow rate. His regular ki blasts all act differently. Fat Buu's light ki blasts are homing. His heavy ki blasts make a backwards loop and then stop before chasing after the opponent. Super Buu's heavy ki blasts are homing for a short while, but then they stop for a bit and fire off in the direction you orginally fired them. Level 1 (Fat Buu) Level 2 (Fat Buu) Overdrive - No Throw - Buu turns the enemy into a cookie for a while, and they can't block or attack, but they can still move. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Kamehameha None Above Shogekiha Super Shogekiha Below None Energy Field Level 3 (Super Buu) Overdrive - No Throw - Buu turns the enemy into a doll for a while, and they can't block or attack, but they can still move. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Saiko No Kogeki None Above Genocide Atk. Genocide Atk. Below None Energy Field ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gotenks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Notes - Gotenks is the ultimate powerhouse. His attacks are slow, but they're good enough to make up for it. Level 1 Gotenks can easily take out a level 3 character. His throw lets you toss the opponent around or get off a free super ki, and his supers are insanely good. The main downside is that his fusion is unstable and breaks up after a short while, depending on which level you chose. He can easily kill someone in that amount of time, though. His light ki blasts cost 6% and are very slightly homing. His heavy ki blasts cost 16% and are homing. Level 1 (SSJ3 Gotenks) Level 2 (SSJ3 Gotenks) Level 3 (SSJ3 Gotenks) Overdrive - No Throw - Gotenks fires a galactic donut and turns the opponent into a ki volleyball, which can be hit around for a while. 50% 100% Super Ki - Left/Right Victory Cannon None Above Ghost Kamikaze Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack Attack Below Galactic Donut None ====================================================================== 5. Frequently Asked Questions ====================================================================== Q: How do I pick level 2/3 characters? A: Level 2 and Level 3 forms must be bought in the shop in the options menu. Once you buy them, hit left or right on the character selection screen to switch between forms. Q: I bought a level 2/3 character in the shop, but I can't use him! Why not? A: If you buy a high-level character and don't have the lower levels, you can't use that character. Q: How do I make enough money for all these forms? A: Beating the challenge mode fights gives a lot of points, and even more if you have the difficulty up. Q: What is "ground bouncing"? A: It's what I call the easiest form of combos. Ground bouncing is when you hit the opponent towards the ground and they bounce back, ready for another punch. With certain characters, like Krillin, you can do this several times in a row. Q: How do I perform super ki blasts? I have 100% energy and I push R+A+B but my character does a regular blast! A: Most likely, your computer doesn't allow you to use more than 2 buttons at once. The way to fix this is to change one of your buttons to Shift, Ctrl, or Alt. This way, you can press the buttons required. If you're just having trouble inputting both buttons at the same time, you can try holding them before you press the charge button. So instead of R and then A+B, try A+B and then R. ====================================================================== 6.Move Descriptions ====================================================================== Android 16 Hell's Flash - Android 16 appears and fires a large beam from openings in his palm. Android 17 Energy Barrier - Android 17 appears and creates a barrier around himself and 18. Touching this barrier causes damage. Atomic Blast - Vegeta extends two fingers, pointing at the opponent, and fires a large beam from them. Bakuhatsuha - Vegeta raises two fingers and creates a large explosion where the opponent is. Big Bang Attack - Vegeta holds his palm forward and fires a large ball from it. Body Change - Ginyu fires a beam that causes both fighters to switch bodies if it hits. In this case, that means health and stats. An extremely useful attack if you use it properly. Burning Attack - Trunks fires a large blast of ki. Chobakuretsumaha - Piccolo charges a ball between his hands and fires it at the opponent. This attack is sometimes called Gekiretsukodan in the other DBZ games. Crusher Ball - Ginyu charges a ball on one of his hands and throws it at the opponent. Death Ball - Frieza raises his arms, charges a large ball, and throws it at the opponent. If he misses, it will hit the planet and blow it up after 45 seconds, killing the current character. Energy Ball - Android 18 holds up her hand, fingers splayed, and fires a ball of ki at the opponent. Energy Field - The user creates a large energy field that damages whatever it touches. Final Flash - The user pulls his hands behind his body as if to clap, brings them together with palms facing outward, and fires a large beam from them.
