Shining Force : Resurrection of the Dark Dragon [Card Guide] FAQ by Tyma (mail@tyma.net) Version 1 06/05/04 "If I can change humans to hens, we won't ever have to worry about food!" - Old Gert, Shining Force Contents 1. FAQ 2. Mawlock 3. Card Effect List 4. Card Locations 4.1 Hero Cards 4.2 Villain Cards 4.3 Walkthrough 5. Credits -- 1. FAQ Q. So just how do these newfangled 'Card' things work? A. The GBA re-make of Shining Force contains a new script, and 3 new characters, who didn't appear in the Mega Drive version. One of these characters (Mawlock) has the ability to equip 'cards', which allow him to inherit new stats and abilities. Q. How do you acquire the cards? A. Cards come in 2 varieties (Hero cards and villain cards). Hero cards are hidden amongst the free-roaming RPG sections of the game, while villain cards can be earned in specific battles. Q. Do the cards make the game much easier? A. Much, much, much easier, but with the new ramping difficulty, a large collection of cards is necessary, when you start playing 'New Game +'. Using cards is completely optional, anyway. You don't even need to use Mawlock in your party, if you don't want to. Q. If I miss a card. Can I go back and get it? A. In most cases, no. If you miss a card, there is no way of back-tracking to a previous location / battle. However, you can always pick up the card on the next play-through Q. What happens after I beat the game? A. You'll receive Max's card, and begin the game again, at a higher difficulty level. After the first time you beat the game, Mawlock will always join your party at the beginning of the game, and carry over all the cards from the previous game. Q. Can I imitate someone who isn't in my party? A. Yes. You can imitate a character you haven't even met yet, provided you have their card. Q. Can I imitate Dark Dragon? A. You cannot imitate any of the enemy forces, only members of The Shining Force. Q. Mae won't talk to me anymore. How do I get her card? A. Characters will only tell you their stories (and in some cases, give out their cards) if they remain active in your party, and survive all their battles. Otherwise, their stories will halt before reaching their conclusion, and the characters will never end up trusting you enough to hand over their card. If a character dies in battle, you'll have to wait until the next play-through, to pick up their cards. Q. I tried to recruit Hanzou /Musashi, but all I found were some cards~!!!!! A. The locations of these secret characters are different in the re-make. Hanzou is now in Waral (Chapter 5). Musashi is in Rudo (Chapter 6) -- 2. Mawlock In a re-make full of surprises, perhaps the most game-changing element is the introduction of Mawlock ; a character who can collect and equip 'cards', in order to gain new stats and abilities. While Mawlock isn't a particularly strong character, his ability is so powerful it can completely change the game (literally). During the course of your adventure, Max and Mawlock can collect cards which represent different members of The Shining Force (the good guys), and the forces of Runefaust (the bad guys). Each card represents a specific character in the game, and comes with 2 inherent features ; Ability and Effect ***************************************************************************** * Ability * * An statistic ability which represents the character in question. For * * instance, the character might be a fast runner, a stout defender, or a * * magician with the ability to cast a specific spell. * * * * Mawlock can inherit the ability of any card he has equipped. Mawlock * * retains this ability for the duration of the battle. * ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** * Effect * * A one-time effect which represents the character's special ability. For * * example, the character may be able to fly, or posses the ability to inflict * * huge ammounts of domage in a single strike. * * * * Mawlock can use a card's effect once per battle. The effect must target a * * specific enemy or ally, and in some instances, will bestow a new statistic * * on the target (such as the ability to fly) * ***************************************************************************** Although Mawlock appears as both an NPC and a playable character early in the game, he doesn't join the Shining Force until mid-way through Chapter 4. This is the first time you can use his Card ability. In order to use any card you have collected, Mawlock must be in your party, and must have the card in question equipped, prior to the battle.. ***************************************************************************** * Equipping Cards * * * * Press "L" to bring up the menu, and select "Item / Equip". Select Mawlock, * * move the cursor to an empty Equip slot, and press "A", then select the card * * to equip. Mawlock can hold up to 4 cards at once. * ***************************************************************************** If the card equipped is a hero card, Mawlock can also activate one of two other abilities : ***************************************************************************** * Move * * * * If used in conjunction with a card who's owner is currently in your party, * * the owner will be awarded an extra 'move' this turn * ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** * Imitate * * * * Mawlock will summon a clone of the character depicted on the card. For the * * remainder of the battle, they are yours' to smack the enemies around with * ****************************************************************************** Abilities and effects can be mixed and matched, so creating 3 clones of Max, or a flying, Hp-regenerating Musashi is all fair-game ^_^ If you have an evil imagination, take a glance at the effect list, and let it run wild. -- 3. In order to form a bond, make sure that you ALWAYS : * Include the character in your party * Protect the character in battle * Make sure the character levels up properly * Speak to the character in your HQ after EVERY battle As the game progresses, these characters will start confiding in you, whenever you talk to them in the HQ, sharing thoughts and stories. When they have sufficient trust in you, they will entrust you with their card. This can happen in any town, in any chapter, and will only happen if you pay them attention throughout the duration of the game, although some characters find Max much easier to trust than others do.
