The content of the mini-games is rather a little bit lazy. While most of them involve a lot of motion and steering (skiing, bobsleigh) instead of just simple button tapping, a number of the events in-game are basic copies of other games (Downhill Skiing -> Slalom, Downhill Skiiing + Ski Jump -> Free Style Moguls). There is no real ending to this game. If the nation you chose wins First Place, you do not get anything besides the standard Medal table following the last mini-game in the Full Olympics scenario (Free Style Moguls). There is an Opening Ceremonies cutscene, short as it is though. ---------------- GENERAL CONTROLS ---------------- Start - Pause the Game Select + B - Abort the event you are currently in (moves to the next event in Olympic Mode) ----- TEAMS ----- The following nineteen countries plus the Commonwealth of Independent States are represented, and you can pick any one of them. The author does not believe there are any statistical differences between each nation. Australia Denmark Holland Spain Austria Finland Italy Sweden Brazil France Jamaica Switzerland Canada Germany Japan U.S.A. CIS Great Britain Norway Zimbabwe ---------------- TRAINING SESSION ---------------- After picking your nation, you can train in any of the seven events represented in this game (the torch is to do the actual Olympics event). Going from left to right, top to bottom, these are the events: Downhill Biathlon Ski Jumping Bobsleigh Slalom Short Track Speed Skating Free Style Moguls -------- OLYMPICS -------- By picking the Olympics Torch, you are able to select one of five different types of Olympic Courses to go through. FULL OLYMPICS - The Starting Ceremonies, all Olympic Events, then the Closing Ceremonies ALL DOWNHILL - Downhill, Ski Jumping, Slalom, Free Style Moguls NO DOWNHILL - Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Short Track Speed Skating FIRST HALF - Downhill, Biathlon, Ski Jumping, Bobsleigh LAST HALF - Slalom, Short Track Speed Skating, Free Style Moguls ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Events -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [EVNT] --------------- DOWNHILL SKIING --------------- In Downhill Skiing, you must go down-right on a somewhat isometric ski course, staying within the boundaries of the course. If you go out of the boundaries (any area of the background with 'rough' on it is considered out of boundaries) or knock over a gate, you are disqualified. Apparently, it is also possible to 'miss' a gate, though the author is unsure as to how that is supposed to work. When going downhill, you can build up speed by pressing the Down button once. This will cause your skiier to 'tuck' and gain extra speed. You do NOT need to hold down the Down button to stay in tuck mode. If you press the Up button you will move into 'snow plow' mode to stay down. If you hit one of the numerous large banks of snow you will revert back into a normal standing up position automatically. To control your skiier, you can use the Left and Right buttons to angle your skis to point 'left' (facing down on the screen) and right. The degree you hold each D-Pad button also influences your turn, as a light tap will very gently change the angle but holding a D-Pad button for longer will significantly change the angle of your skis. -------- BIATHLON -------- The Biathlon consists of two sections - a cross country section and a rifle shooting section. You will do some cross country skiing first, followed by 5 targets of rifle shooting, another skiing session, a second run of rifle shooting, and a final cross country skiing part. During the first section, the cross country section, you need to maintain your stamina, as evidenced by how full the Heart is on the right side of the screen. By pressing Left and Right to build up speed, your Heart counter slowly decreases. If you stop pressing the D-Pad buttons for awhile, it will build back up again. Should you run it down, you will not be able to do anything for several seconds, and when the Heart starts flashing, you will only be able to do limited work. When you get to hills, press the Left/Right button in conjunction with the Up button for a boost up the hill (if you remember the approximate times of when the uphills show up, or are using an emulator, conserve your energy just before coming to an uphill so you do not stall out midclimb). Similarly, when going down the hill, press the Down button to give yourself a speed boost going down. Once you come to a rifle shooting target, your character will automatically stop and start targeting the targets on the board. Your cursor will drift and move around on its own, but you can use the D-Pad to move it faster and nudge it. However, you cannot totally control is, as the cursor does have a mind of its own. Press the A button to shoot, and aim for the centre of each circle. For every target you miss entirely, you get a 30 second penalty added to your time, and a 15 second penalty if you hit the ring of a circle. After either rifle shooting target is done, build up speed again (your stamina will have refilled while doing the shooting). There is no indication to go again, so you have to move as soon as you shot your last bullet. ----------- SKI JUMPING ----------- In Ski Jumping, the final results are based off the average of your score and distance. To start, you will go down the slope of a specially constructed ski jump hill. Right before or at the black 'dot' at the end of the slope, press the A button to jump into the air. Failure to jump fast enough or jumping too soon will disqualify you. While in the air, do NOT press the A button to start. Instead, press the Up button, which will give you extra distance. When you approach the ground, you need to press the A button to right yourself and make a proper landing. If you crash, you will again be disqualified. The button controls are a little wonky here, but to make a 'Good Landing' for a high Style score, you should press Up, Right and A at the same time. --------- BOBSLEIGH --------- With Bobsleigh, where you only have a single run in-game (whereas in real life the time average of four runs is taken), you have to start by pushing your own sleigh at the start. Press the Left and Right buttons to pick up speed and make it onto the course faster. On the track, part of the time you will be going straight through. During this time period, press and hold the A button to accelerate. If you bump either wall, you will lose a bit of your speed. Once you get to the wide open track, the main goal is to keep your speed up, while not crashing. You can go up the walls, but do not go up too fast or too high, and especially do not slow down drastically on the wall or again you will crash. You need to be especially good at steering at high speeds to get a good time for the Bobsleigh. ------ SLALOM ------ Slalom shares the exact same controls as Downhill Skiing - Press Down to 'tuck', Up to 'Snow Plow', Left and Right to angle your skis on your downhill skiing. The difference in Slalom is that you must ski in between every pair of 'gates', or flags, and cannot knock them over. If you ski outside of a gate, you are disqualified. Fortunately, you can tell in which direction the next set of gates will be by looking at the ground - the direction of trail marks in the snow indicated where to ski next. ------------------------- SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING ------------------------- Press the A button at the start for a 3-second countdown timer to start. You are disqualified if you make two false starts. Once the start whistle goes off, press the Left and Right D-Pad buttons to build up speed. Apparently, this is all you are supposed to, at least according to the game manual, but the author was unable to defeat the competition when doing this. ----------------- FREE STYLE MOGULS ----------------- The Free Style Moguls combine both a Downhill component with a Ski Jumping component (two Ski jumps, in fact). During the Downhill component, you must nimbly move around multiple speed bumps (snow banks) on the downhill course. Each bump you hit counts as a 'flaw' and subtracts from your total points. Once you get clear of bumps, press the Down button to tuck and build speed, and press the A button to jump at both of the ski jumps you do. While in the air, you can do tricks - left and right spins by spinning around with the Left and Right button, or a Toes Upward Flip by pressing the Up button. Pressing the A and B button also (apparently, again according to the manual) adds on to the trick. Depending on how much speed you had and at what point you jumped, you may be able to do three spins in the air. If you remember to press the A button prior to impact, you get an 'Incredible Trick' and full points on your jump. Points totals for the Free Style are 25% based on your technique in skiing downhill and avoiding bumps, 25% on your speed in getting down, and 25% for each jump. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Donations/Amazon -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [DONT] I don't really care too much about donations, but if you are feeling generous, feel free to send one via PayPal to gammabetaalphafaqs AT gmail DOT com Alternatively, if you ever order any items from Amazon.com, go to the link below. I write FAQs for plenty of obscure old games with no FAQs, and having a physical copy of the game (and even better, a manual) is superior to not.
