Yes, I know its the walkthroughs, which is probably why you are reading this. These take a lot of time to write, time which I do not always have. I will finish them eventually, though. Other than that, everything else is finished. Having purchased this game when it was brand-new and also having played through it many times, I was therefore suprised when I realized that there were absolutely no FAQs that I could find regarding this game. I feel that is something which needs to be corrected, and so here is my attempt. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 2: Gameplay Basics All of the characters, of which there are five, move pretty much in the same manner, with some minor differences regarding powers and special attacks. In this section I will give the basic moves that are the same for all of the characters, with special powers listed latein the individual levels. Basic moves: - Move left/right: "left/right" on movement pad - crouch/duck: hold "down" on movement pad - jump: "A" button - special attack/move: "B" button (see individual levels for more information) - pause game: "Start" button - select character (in character selection screen): "Select" button -You start with three extra lives which are shared among all five characters. Therefore, if you lose one life as Spiderman before beating his level, you will only have two lives left to complete all the other levels with. This, more than anything else, is what makes the game difficult, although there is a way to gain more lives. (see Gambit's level, section 7b). -each character can take 9 hits before their life meter runs out. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 3: Game Plot [text taken from game instruction manual] From web to web, skyscraper to skyscraper, Spider-Man races through the towering canyons of the city! The X-Men - Wolverine, Cyclops, and Storn have all disappeared... and unless Spidey can find Gambit, the Cajun's fate will surely be the same! Spidey sees Gambit's familiar silhouette below. But, as he swings down, a giant tude shoots out from the roof of a garbage truck, and "GNNRRR-SFLANNG!" it swallows the unsuspecting Arcadian! Spidey flashes back through countless life and death perils and flesh-hungry Super-Villians... back to an absurd assassin called Arcade and his deadly amusement park! The wall crawler slings a Spider-tracer onto the truck and pursues his prey into the night... unaware that the hunter is about to become the hunted! Arcade originally created his fun fair to make his million dollar "hits" more entertaining! But, now he's rebuilt it - with all-new, bigger games, inescapable traps, and deadly rides - purely for his own enjoyment! And tonight's very limited run, one-time only showing is the thrilling final destruction of the X-Men and their would-be rescuer, Spider-Man! [end of manual text] The plot of the game is very simple, but in games like this the plot doesn't really matter that much. Basically you have to break in to Arcade's hideout, and then break out as each of the X-Men, fighting various robots and enemies along the way. That's it. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 4- level 1: Spider-man part 1 "Spidey to the Rescue!" Note: after completion of this first level, a character selection screen will appear and will allow access to the other levels in the game. This level must be beaten in order to progress any further in the game. There is no boss for this level. [level description taken from game manual] Spidey's tracer leads him to the perimeter of Arcade's bizarre complex. The way in is wide open...but the webslinger's Spider-Sense warns him of a less than hospitable welcome! A security system guards every inch of the entrance and the only way around it is to touch each of the Security Eyes in the order they flash. Use your Spider-Sense to guide you and bagging them will be a snap. Make it all the way inside and a Super-Hero suprise party is waiting for you! [end of manual description] --------------- --------------- 4a - character intro and moves These moves are the same for all of Spiderman's levels. Spiderman has the largest variety of moves of all the characters in the game. He is also in the most levels, a total of three. His main moves utilize his web powers, including web-slinging and web-bolts. He can also stick to vertical surfaces such as walls. -fire web bolt : B button -throw slinging web : up + B buttons -grip onto a wall : press direction towards wall when Spiderman is next to it. This also works if Spiderman is falling or swinging on a web. -jump off of a wall : left or right + A button. Will result in Spiderman jumping up and off of a wall in the left or right direction. -climb up/down a wall : while gripping onto a wall, press up/down. -jump off of a web: press A button while swinging on a web. --------------- --------------- 4b - special items These special items are the same for all of Spiderman's levels. -Heart: increases Spiderman's energy level, although not by much. -Spider: worth 50 points and nothing else, which means it is useless. --------------- --------------- 4c - level enemies -Wall security bot: This enemy hangs onto a wall and moves up or down it, firing projectiles towards Spiderman as it does so. Although not very deadly, the projectiles can be very difficult to duck under or jump over. -Floating security bot:Same as the above wall-bot, but this one floats in midair and fires small, slow-moving projectiles towards Spiderman. They are very easy to avoid, so just move left or right to avoid them. Fire your web bolts when jumping in midair or hanging on a wall to hit this thing. --------------- --------------- 4d - level walkthough MAP KEY: - |xx| or -- : wall/floor - === : platform - (1) : security eye, number correpsonds to order in which you touch them. - (H) : heart icon - (X) : enemy location - -----o : pole to swing from The Goal of this first level is to touch each of the security eyes in the order they flash, which will then allow you entry into the rest of the compound. There are a total of twenty eyes in this level. I have divided the level into two sections , A and B. There are 11 eyes in part A, and 9 eyes in part B. ---- Level Map Part A ---- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | (x) =========|xxxxx----| |---xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx| | ------| |--------------------| | (8)(H) | | -- | | ----|xx|--- | |--------------- -------|xxxxxxxxxx|---------------- | | |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx| | |===== |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-------------| | | |x----------------xxx| | (9) | | (7)|x| |xxx| (6) | | |===== |x| |xxx| | | | |x| |xxx------ | | | ------o --- |--------- | | | ======== | | | | | |===== | | | |-------------------| | | =====---- |-------------------| | | ======== |xx| | | | |xx| (4) | | | |xx| | | |===== |xx----------------------- | | | |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx| | (10) | | |xx|--------|xx|---------- | | | ======== |xx| |xx| | | | ---- |xx| | | | ========= |xx| | | |===== |xx| | | | |xx| | | |===== |xx|-- --------| | | (1) (3) |xxxx| |xxxxxxx| | | =======----- |xxxx| |xxxxxxx| | | ======== |xxx| |xxxx| |xxxxxxx| | | |xxx| |xxxx| |xxxxxxx| | | |xxx| ------ --------| | |===== |xxx| | | | |xxx| | (11) | |===== (x)|xxx| (5) | | | START (2) |xxx| | Down | ----------------------------------------------------------------| To MAP | | B | In the beginning of the level, Spiderman begins at the far left corner of the screen (marked START on the above map). Immedietly to his left are a series of windows progressing upwards, which act as platforms. (seen as ==== on the map). Jump up two of the platforms and onto the larger one , where you will find the first flashing security eye. Spiderman's "Spidey Sense" is also helpful here, as it will point you directly to the eyes you need to pick up. Once you touch this eye, jump down to the right until you are on the ground again, and you will come across the second eye, and the first enemy. There is not too much you can do to avoid the projectiles this wall security bot shoots at you, so just shoot as many web-bolts as possible at it before it has a chance to strike back. If it does hit you, do not worry. There are not that many enemies in this level. After destroying the bot and touching the second eye, jump back up the windowsill platforms until you reach the spot where you collected the first security eye. Now jump across to the platform directly to the right, and you will find the third eye. Once this is touched, continue to the right and drop down. Continue to the right and you will come across another security eye, only this one is not flashing. This is the fifth eye. The fourth one is above it. To get to the fourth eye, jump up and climb up the vertical shaft that leads up to the next level (located to the left of the fifth eye). If you climb along the left wall, then when you cannot climb up any further you can jump up and out of the shaft onto the next level. From here climb up the righthand wall until you reach the next level, and jump onto that. Moving to the left, you will find the fourth security eye. Once you have grabbed this, progress back down the way you came to reach eye number five. There are two different ways to get to eye number six. The easiest way is to get out of the building and back onto the window platforms. Jump up a number of times until you spot a horizontal pole. (marked as ----o on map). You cannot just jump the distance because it is too far, and you will usually fall all the way down to the ground and have to do it over again. Instead, throw a slinging web ( up and B ) to swing off of the pole and onto another platform that will lead back into the building. Once inside, jump across the gap and climb up the right wall to find eye number six. There is another way to get the sixth eye. From the location you found the fourth eye in, move to the left wall and climb up it. Now, you cannot jump across the gap from your position on the wall, but you can still jump. When in the air you will automatically leap to the right. However, if you press the movement pad in the opposite direction, Spiderman will change directions as well. You can use this jumping trick to jump off the wall onto the floor left of the wall, and from there jump across the gap and climb up the right wall, collecting eye number six. The seventhth eye is located back across the gap, up on the wall where you were able to enter, if you chose the easy way to get eye six. Just climb up the wall to grab it. Once this is accomplished, you need to jump off of the wall and back onto the windowsill platforms. Jump up these all the way to the very top. Once you reach the top level there will be another enemy here, a drone floating in midair. Jump up while firing web-bolts in order to quickly destroy it. Once this is done, move across until you reach the very edge of the rooftop you are on. Use your web-sling to swing across the gap, collecting eye number eight and a heart in the process. You must swing across, for the space is too large to just jump across. Now progress through the tunnel until you reach a downward shaft. Jump down this shaft, and just let yourself drop down. You will not be injured by the fall in any way. If you stay close to the left side of the shaft when falling down, you will be able to collect the ninth, tenth, and eleventh eyes within a second. If you miss one, you must grab onto the wall and climb back up to where the eye is. Once you have these three eyes, continue to drop down into part B of the level map. ---- Level Map Part B ---- | Down | | from | ------------------------------------------------------------| map A | | |xxxx---| | | |xxxx| | |(x) |x|--- | | |x| (13) | | |x| ======== ---- | | ------------ |x| ---|xx| | | |xxxxxxxxxx| |x|(x) -----|xxxxx| | | |xxxxxxxxxx| |x| |xxxxxxxxxx| | | |xxxxxxxxxx| |x| (12) |xx--------| | | |x--------x| |x|----------------|xx| | | |x| |x| |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx| (x) | | |x| --- ----------------------- | | |x| | | |x| (19) | | |x| | | |x-------------------------------------------------- | | -----------x----------------------------|xxxxxxxxxx| | | |x| (14) --|xxxxxxxx| | | |x| ----|xxxx| | | (18) |x|(x) ------ | | |x| | | |x| | | ====== =====|x|====== ======= ======== | | |x| | | |x| | | |x| --------------------------| | |xx----------- |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx| | |xx----------- |x|-----------------------| |----------- |x| |x| | |xxxxxxxxxx| |x| |x| (16) | |--------xx| |x| (15) |x| (20) | | |xx| |x| |x| | | (17) ---- --------------------------====== ---------| | (x)|xxxxxxxx| | =======|xxxxxxxx| | (H) |xxxxxxxx| --------------------------------------------------------------------| While dropping down from map A, keep an eye out for when the first lefthand tunnel appears. When it does, grab onto a wall to stop yourself from falling all the way down. The next two security eyes are in the first tunnel. Go into the room and jump down onto the floor. There is another enemy here, so quickly defeat it. If it does shoot something at you, there is very little room to manuever, and therefore you will most likely get hit. If you haven't done so, touch the twelfth eye after defeating the droid. Now move back up and jump on the platform immedietly above eye twelve to collect eye thirteen. Next move back out of this room and drop all the way to the bottom. Move to the left into another room, and jump across the three platforms. There is another droid on the left wall, so shoot at it while you are on the second platform before continuing onto the third. Collect the fourteenth eye, and then drop off the platforms and make your way into the small room below this one, where you will find eye number fifteen. Once you collect this eye, a problem you might have involves getting out of this room. The platforms in the room above generally block your jumps. In order to get out of here, perform the reverse-jump technique that you could have done in order to collect eye number six during the first part of the level. As you jump out of this small room, you will notice that beyond the wall is the next eye you need to collect. It turns out, however, that this eye is at the far end of the level. To get ahold of it, climb up the righthand vertical shaft until you come to the center tunnel. Here is a drone, so shoot web-bolts at it while on the wall before jumping into the tunnel. If you continue to the very end of the tunnel you will encounter another security eye; this is the nineteenth eye you must grab. For now ignore it and jump up into the vertical tunnel immedietly before this eye. Climb all the way up the shaft and move all the way to the left, where you will find another enemy. Destroy it and fall down the lefthand tunnel. You will now be in a place with two platforms; ignore these and jump down another tunnel that will take you to the very bottom. Once at the bottom, move to the right, and you will come to the blinking security eye, along with the last enemy in this level. Destroy it quickly, as there is almost no room to maneuver around the projectiles. Once you have grabbed the sixteenth eye, you now need to retrace your steps. Head back to the left, going past the vertical tunnel you dropped down from. Past this is the seventeenth eye, as well as a heart pick-up, although since you have just beaten all the enemys, this is no longer necessary. Once you have grabbed this stuff, climb back up the tunnel, to where the two platforms are. Jump across these platforms to collect the eighteenth eye. This jump may take a couple of tries, for the ceiling here is so low that if you jump too hard you might not make it. Once this is done, go back to the left and up the tunnel to where you found the nineteenth eye before. Once you have that, go all the way back down to where the sixteenth eye was, dropping down all the tunnels and heading to the right. From here continue to the right to find the final security eye. -end of level- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 5: Level 2: Spider-man part 2 "High Rise Hijinx!" Character moves and special items are the same from the first level. [level description taken from game manual] Sticking his webs into other people's business has never failed to get Spidey into trouble...and today is no exception. Arcade has prepared a special treat for the webslinger: a "de"-construction site. "Spider-slayers" are hurling bags of exploding cement from the girders. Welding droids shoot concentrated lazer blasts. At the top of the site, the girders are few and far between. Rain is falling in sheets and almost horizontally when the wind picks up One false step or one sudden gust and it's a Spidey sky dive! If that's not enough to create the perfect mood for multiple fractures, keep an eye out for the villian with the liveliest costume, Carnage! Is it really the sociopathic symbiote or merely another of Arcade's robotic creations? Is now a good time for detective work or a slugfest? [end of manual description] --------------- --------------- 5a - level enemies Spider Slayers - men who stand around and hurl stuff at Spiderman. They do not move, but it is very difficult to avoid the thrown objects since Spiderman cannot duck under them. Multiple web bolts (3 or 4) will take these guys out. Hanging droids - Cone shaped things that hang off the underside of girders and move back and forth, occasionally firing projectiles. If you are quick enough, you can destroy these before they are able to fire anything at you. elements/rain - not really an enemy, but something you still need to watch out for, nonetheless. As you go along you will see the rain falling down, and when you jump, it will blow you in the direction it is falling. This can really be annoying when you are on narrow ledges and such, so be careful when jumping. --------------- --------------- 5b - level walkthough forthcoming at some time in the distant future... --------------- --------------- 5c - level boss: Carnage One of the harder bosses in the game. Carnage, although he looks a little different, is basically a replica of Spiderman, meaning that he has the same single attack: firing bolts and jumping around. The "arena" where you fight Carnage is quite large, filled with numerous platforms. Carnage jumps around so much he can be very difficult to hit, but not to fear! There is a special technique you can use that makes Carnage a total pushover. When you first enter the area, you will notice that ahead of you are two platforms, one right over the next. They look somewhat like this: (disregard the Xs. They are for use in placing Spiderman and Carnage). | entrance | ____x1_______________x2______ _____________________________ You will make your stand on the lower platform. The trick here is to get Carnage to jump on the upper platform. You cannot immedietly place yourself on the lower platform. Carnage will not see you, and so will just jump around below you offscreen. To make Carnage follow you, drop down a little until your Spider-Sense goes off. When you see Carnage, jump back up, and most times he will follow you up. If he doesn't, drop back down and repeat the process. When Carnage does follow you, jump up to the top platform. Carnage will also jump on the top platform, hopefully at location X1 or X2 (see graphic above). The moment he lands on the top platform, jump off and down to the lower platform, moving to the side opposite Carnage. You will notice that part of Spider-man extends above the top platform. Carnage will follow this and will jump towards it. Move away (so he doesn't land on you), but move in the direction where Carnage is jumping from. You basically switch sides (with you still on the lower platform). When he lands, simply turn to face in his direction and fire as many web-bolts as possible at him before he jumps again. You do not need to jump up at all, and your bolts will still hit his feet. When he jumps again, repeat moving to his old location, turning and firing. If this is done correctly, Carnage will stay on the top platform the entire time, and you will beat him without being hit. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 6: Level 3: Wolverine "Laugh 'Till you Drop!" This is one of the easier levels of the game. The only difficulty is the fact that Wolverine has no projectile attack like all the other characters, and so needs to be very close to his opponents in order to hit them. [level description taken from game manual] Happy-go-lucky circus clowns and the wild, adamantium clawed Wolverine form the most unlikely on combinations. But, make the clowns robot replicas of the slapstick Super-Villian, Obnoxio, complete with acid filled custard pies, and Wolverine's back on familiar turf: a battle to stay alive! Add bayonet carrying toy solders, machine-gun firing Jack-in-the-Boxes, and exploding building blocks...and you've got a fun house guaranteed to be side-splitting! Keep going up and eventually you'll find the end of everybody's troubles... Apocalypse! The closest you've ever come to this joker was a robot double and that was nearly enough! Maybe this is just another copy, but it's accurate down to the last detail, including Apocalypse's psionically controlled costume. So quite grouching over missing the original, and nail this sucker! [end of manual description] --------------- --------------- 6a - character intro and moves Wolverine has no projectiles, which makes him harder to use that other characters. He has to be very close to the enemies in order to use his adamantium claws, but when he does, only one or two hits will take out any enemy. -normal claw swipe: press B button. -Uppercut swipe: press Up + B button simultaneously. This is mainly for cutting through walls. Only two moves sounds pretty lame, and I agree. It is. Nontheless, they are more than enough for this easy level. --------------- --------------- 6b - special items Although the instruction manual does not list any special items in this level, this level does include health regeneration. -heart: Increases Wolverine's health. Only found after defeating Jack-in-the-Box enemies. --------------- --------------- 6c - level enemies clown - runs around and throws pies at you. Avoid the pies by jumping over them, and be careful not to run into him. He is faster than you would think. toy soldier - Probably the easiest enemy in this level, this guy just moves around. He has no projectile attack, and so is easy to dispatch. jack-in-the-box - Pops up out of large blocks when you come near him. Takes multiple hits to destroy, but otherwise is very easy. If you get to him quickly, he will have no time to fire his gun at you. *special technique* First, when a jack-in-the-box pops up, destroy it like normal. Then move past it until the box is no longer onscreen. Then move back, and in many cases, it will pop up again. When you destroy it this time, it will leave a heart. This technique can be repeated, and is good for gaining your health back partway through the level. Giant clown - This thing just sits around and shoots ... something... in an arc as you run past. It doesn't actually aim for you, but it is still very hard to get by without taking a hit. It cannot be destroyed. I would advise you to just run through regardless of the damage you take, and gain your health back by destroying a jack-in-the-box later in the level. exploding blocks - these are not really enemies, but you need to be careful and avoid them, as they will cause you damage. They are small blocks that are white with a small black insignia in the middle. The contrast on the gameboy, however, makes them extremely hard to see, and consequently, hard to avoid. --------------- --------------- 6d - level walkthough forthcoming --------------- --------------- 6e - level boss: Apocalypse robot Too bad we couldn't really fight Apocalypse. We have to settle for this crappy robot instead. This boss has no special attacks of any sort, regardless of what it says in the instruction manual. He just jumps around, like Carnage but with no projectiles and more predictable. When entering this battle, move Wolverine as close to Apocalypse as possible. When he lands on the ground from a jump, swipe him as many times as possible. You can uppercut him for more damage, but this requires you to be even closer than with a normal swipe. When Apocalypse jumps up, back off until he lands, and then repeat the whole procedure. He should fall before you have to back up too much, as this boss can only take about 15 hits. *note* one of the sole interesting things about this boss is that he will chase you through the whole level, if you run away. I have ran back to the very beginning of the level, only to have this guy appear a few minutes later. Not much can really be made of this fact, however, as you still have to beat him by using the methods above. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 7: Level 4: Gambit "Checkmate!" This level, in my opinion, is one of the most difficult in the entire game, with the possible exception of Storm's level. The main reason is due to a massive amount of enemies, limited ammunition, and a couple extremely difficult jumps that must be timed perfectly. However, this is also ironically the best level, as it is the only one that allows the player to gain extra lives. --------------- --------------- 7a - character intro and moves Gambit has the power to charge playing cards with energy and then throw them at things, blowing up whatever they hit. As neat as this sounds, the game makes it very difficult, in that Gambit's stock of cards is limited, and if you run out of cards you are going to get hurt and probably killed. Throw card - B button. You can also aim lower by crouching while throwing a card. Throw Card up - Up and B button. --------------- --------------- 7b - special items This level has the most special items of any level in the game, and this is what allows the player to gain extra lives from this level. -heart: like in all the other levels, this increases Gambit's health. -playing card: increases your number of playing cards. A card will appear whenever you defeat an enemy, but you need to pick it up quickly as it will slowly float up and away. -diamond: 500 points, but otherwise useless. -lucky star: 50 points, but that is not all. In this level, for every 50 stars you collect, you gain an extra life. There are exactly 100 stars total in this level, so two new lives. It requires you to complete almost the entire level, but it is worth it. *special technique* You can build up extra lives by collecting all 100 stars, dying, then going through the level again collecting all the stars again. Because you lose a life when you die, you will only gain 1 new life each time, but with some patience you can rack up the lives you have. This game allows a maximum of nine lives. --------------- --------------- 7c - level enemies Yes, all the enemies in this level are chess pieces. -pawn - easiest enemy in the level, although they can drop down from higher platforms and take you by suprise. One hit takes them out. They will also occasionally respawn offscreen and come at you from behind, especially if you are backtracking in the level. -rook - (the thing that looks like a castle, for those who do not follow chess). More difficult than the pawn, this creature sits around, but fires projectiles occasionally at you. Two hits to take it out. -knight -I believe this thing is a knight. I am not sure because the graphic is small and strange looking. This guy runs around really fast back and forth, but otherwise has no attacks. One card hit should destroy it easily. -bishop- a thing that flies around and shoots stuff at you. Very annoying, except there are far fewer of these in the level and Queens. Two hits to destroy them. -Queen - This thing flies around in the air and fires missiles at you. It is very difficult to avoid, and if you keep dying in this level, this thing is probably the reason why. Fire cards it as you jump forward onto new platforms as you go along, and hopefully you can take it out the moment it comes onscreen. Be careful, as there are a LOT of these creatures. --------------- --------------- 7d - level walkthough forthcoming --------------- --------------- 7e - level boss: Arcade playing card This is one of the hardest bosses in the game, which seems to be unjust after a wretched level like this one. The boss is a giant playing card (which doesn't make much sense with the chess theme, but...oh well) with the face of Arcade. Underneath and to the sides of the giant card are platforms, arranged somewhat like this: ------ | | -------- | card | -------- | | | | -------- ------ -------- ----- ----- The card will move back and forth horizontally, and as a result the four platforms along the side are out of the question. If you attempt to stand on them for longer than a moment, the card will come and hit you. The bottom two platforms are also in the path of the card, but Gambit can stay on them for a few moments longer than the top platforms. However, the Card doesn't merely move from side to side. It has two attacks. The first attack fires bullets or something similar towards Gambit. Move around on the ground below the platforms to avoid this attack. The second spits out a chess creature, which upon landing, runs towards Gambit at excessive speed. To begin, run along the ground in the opposite direction the card is moving. It will fire out bullets, but because you are moving they will not hit you. The card fires three bullets, then a creature. When it shoots out a creature, move to one edge of the screen, and wait. When the thing runs at you, fire a card at it, and catch the card pickup. Now, if the Arcade card is on the opposite edge of the screen (which it should be, since you were running in the opposite direction) quickly jump on the edge of the closest lower platform, and fire a number of cards at the card as it comes towards you. Before it reaches you, jump down off the platform and run around again. This technique takes a very long time, but you can beat the card with no damage. This is a good thing, as by this point in the level you will probably have very little health remaining. // Alternate Technique // Instead of jumping on the lower platforms, it is also possible to hit the card by just jumping into the air beside the platforms and throwing a couple of cards at the boss while in the air. Although this is quicker than waiting on one of the lower platforms, it is riskier as some of the cards you throw may not connect with the Arcade Card. However, be very careful to watch your card stock!!! You must always have one card remaining, to destroy the chess creature that pops out. By destroying the chess creature, you gain 3 extra cards from the pickup. If you throw all your cards away, the only way to get the pickup is to let the creature run into you, destroying it but decreasing your precious health meter. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 8: Level 5: Storm "Dunk the Mutant!" I hate this level. I really do, even more so than Gambit's level. Storm is trapped underwater, and she doesn't have a health meter, she has air bubbles, which gradually decrease the longer you are underwater. The problem is you are ALWAYS underwater. Get hit by enemies and your bubbles decrease even more. But you don't just swim through this level; oh no, you have to unlock parts of it to progress any further. --------------- --------------- 8a - character intro and moves Unlike the other levels, Storm is not standing on two feet. Being trapped in water, she swims instead. Although it can be a pain to move quickly, it means she has less basic moves than all the other characters. swim - press direction button. Storm will automatically float upwards, but you can float up quicker by pressing Up on the control pad. In order to stay in place, tap Down lightly and repeatedly. This is necessary when aiming at air locks and such. fire lightning bolt - B button. Shoots one bolt horizontally. Cannot be aimed in another direction except the way she is facing. whirlwind and lightning storm - see special items list below. Press A button to unleash them. --------------- --------------- 8b - special items air bubble - The most neccessary item in this level. Each bubble increases your air supply by one...uh...bubble. Bubbles will appear in the level, coming out of the floor and floating through the ceiling where they are lost forever. You can replenish your entire air supply at one of these air stations, so be on the lookout for them. lightning icon - It looks somewhat like an X in a circle. Unleasing this pick-up will apparently create a lightening storm and destroy all enemies in range. It will not open locked doors or air locks, however. whirlwind icon - looks like a circle, amazingly similar to the air bubble. This appears when you blast open oysters and collect the circles inside. It creates a small whirlwind that moves around you, supposedly keeping you from harm. You will find far more of these icons that the lightning icons. --------------- --------------- 8c - level enemies fish - swims around, and will hit you. Otherwise not very dangerous, except when it catches you in a tight area or comes at you from above. jellyfish - more dangeous than the fish, this one shoots stuff at you, so take it out with a couple lightning shots when it comes onscreen. lazers - Ouch. These HURT. One hit from these will take two air bubbles away from you, not just one. To get past, wait until the lazers stop, and then swim as fast as possible through the space. Even if you are getting low on air, it is better to wait, rather than taking a chance and immedietly going through. door debris - throughout this level are various locks you have to fire four lightning bolts at in order to open. This requires you to aim dead center at the door. However, when the doors open, debris will shoot in four directions, damaging you if you are in the way. Avoid it by staying in the center of the door a little ways back, and the stuff won't even come close. --------------- --------------- 8d - level walkthough forthcoming --------------- --------------- 8e - level boss: metal drone Thankfully, this is an easy boss after such a horrific level like this one. No strategy is necessary: just fire your lightning bolts directly at the creature, paying no attention to the occasional bolt it shoots out at you. If you wish, throw in your special lightning storm or whirlwind attack if you haven't used it on something else, and this drone should fall very quickly. Pay attention to your dwindling air supply, and so make this fight a quick one! ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 9: Level 6: Cyclops "The Ride of Your Life!" Somewhat like Wolverine's level, this one features a nasty electrified track that will kill you with one touch. Because of the way the screen scrolls, however, sometimes you cannot always see if you are jumping onto a platform or onto the track. Be prepared to redo this level a couple times. --------------- --------------- 9a - character intro and moves Cyclops shoots optic blasts from his eyes. A great power to have, the ability to direct these blasts is very nice in this level. *note* on most of the characters, releasing "down" will result in the character returning to a standing position. However, Cyclops will remain in a crouched position until the player hits "up". This continual crouch allows him to shoot his optic blasts in multiple directions while crouched. fire optic blasts: B button (pressing up or down will direct blasts) --------------- --------------- 9b - special items plus sign - works exactly like a heart, so I don't see why they didn't just use a heart icon instead. Increases your energy level. As far as I can tell, this appears only once in this entire level. Not that it's really necessary. --------------- --------------- 9c - level enemies Genoshan Magistrates - Your basic enemy. There are two versions of these guys in this level. This first is standing and fires stuff at you, rather easy to avoid and take down. The second is crouching down, and instead of bullets or whatever, fires some type of orb projectile that looks really painful. This second guy is slow though, so he is harmless if you take him out fast enough. drones - These guys will float around in midair and shoot stuff at you. For the most part they will only show up when you are in a cart on the track, so just aim up at it as you pass by. electrified track - This will kill you more than anything else in this level. If you die and have to redo it, this track is probably the reason why. One touch will zap you and you die. However, once you have gone through the level once or twice, you can know where it is is consequently it is easy to avoid. To travel along the track, hop in the carts that occasionally pass by. track bombs - As if the electrified track wasn't enough of a pain as it was. These bombs sit at various locations along the rail, and if your cart touches it, it blows up, throwing you on the track, resulting in your death. Sometimes they can be very difficult to see. Fire optic blasts down at the track as your cart moves forward to take these suckers out. --------------- --------------- 9d - level walkthough forthcoming --------------- --------------- 9e - level boss: Sentinel Another easy boss, even if it does take forever to defeat. The Sentinel has two attacks: a quick attack that shoots out two lazers, and a slow attack that shoots out a slow-moving orb, that is nonetheless very difficult to dodge. The sentinel also moves up and down, and as a result the attacks travel further when it is in the air. But wait! You can completly avoid the orb attack, and make life a lot easier for yourself. The orb is shot out of the center of the Sentinel's chest, and if this part of the sentinel is not onscreen, the orb will not fire. To do this, move Cyclops around on the screen until you only see the very edge of the Sentinel's arm (the one that shoots lazers at you). Do not move any closer than this. All the optic blasts you fire will still hit the sentinel, but the orb attack will never come. The lazer attacks are still to be reckoned with, though. They can be easily avoided, by either running around to avoid them or by jumping over them as they drop near you. After that, it is just a battle of attrition. Constantly fire your optic blasts, and after about 90 hits (yes, 90!), the sentinel will fall. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 10: Level 7: Spider-man part 3 "Hunt the Hit-Man" This isn't really a level, just a boss battle royale. Spiderman begins in a large room filled with various platforms. You will notice that along the walls are the X-men, but I have found that these portraits do nothing. Too bad. You have to take Arcade out by yourself. --------------- --------------- 10a - level boss: Arcade robots Jump down from the multiple platforms to the bottom of the room. You will find a giant robot thing. Pay special attention to the cannon in it's middle. To beat this monster, use the same technique that you had when fighting Carnage way back in the beginning (the dual platform jump trick). Luckily, there is a platform at the bottom of the room that will do nicely. Instead of a bottom platform you stand on, just use the floor of the room. This guy can jump very far, so occasionally it will jump clear off the platform. If he does, get back on the platform and make him jump after you. It will sometimes fire a ball from its chest cannon, but it will usually hit the top of the platform, leaving you unharmed. After firing web-bolts at this thing, it will be destroyed and out will pop a number of small Arcade robots. You will have to destroy three total. Take them out one by one, and when you destroy one, another will pop out of nowhere. Try to use the platform trick, but if that fails, just walk up to the robot and fire as many web-bolts as you can directly into it, jumping to avoid the bullets Arcade occasionally shoots at you. Soon enough it will be over. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 11: Game Ending After some incredibly difficult levels, the ending is actually rather disappointing. There is no animation or anything, just pictures of the characters with the dialogue below: Arcade: Well done! You have excelled yourselves. Obviously, that wasn't me. More of my robots. Now I've got just one more suprise for you. I'll give you a clue: 5...4...3... Spiderman: Run, the whole place is gonna blow! Spiderman: You think he got out? Gambit: You can count on it. Cyclops: C'mon, let's go home! Yes, that's it. The end of the game. I know it's disappointing. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ 12: Legal Stuff, contact information, FAQ credits, and FAQ history All characters are copyright Marvel. For credit, much help regarding character names, moves, and item descriptions
were taken from the instruction booklet that came packaged with the game. It
provided lots of help that I would have left out of the FAQ if I did not have
it in my possession. Otherwise, all level walkthroughs and techniques are
of my own devising.
