Captain America and the Avengers Game Boy Developer: Realtime Associates Publisher: Mindscape Inc By: GammaBetaAlpha ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Table of Contents -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ How to Play [HELP] Scene One [SCE1] Scene Two [SCE2] Scene Three [SCE3] Scene Four [SCE4] Scene Five [SCE5] Donations/Amazon [DONT] Contact Info [CONT] Credits [CRED] ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- How to Play -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [HELP] Captain America and the Avengers is a common jump-and-shoot game - in other words, a platformer with shooting action, much like the Mega Man series, except far more primitive and much sloppier in execution. The Captain and his three Avenger counterparts, all of which you can play as, are able to jump, drop-kick, shoot projectiles and lift up enemies and toss them. Controls overall are a bit sloppy, however, as you will find it impossible to execute a drop kick or lifting action from time to time. Controls -------- D-Pad - Move around left and right A - Jump into the air +A + Left/Right - Do a drop kick +B - Fire a projectile B - Punch - Lift an enemy +Up/Down - Fire a projectile Difficulty ---------- In the options screen, you can change the difficulty rating of the game. To get the real ending of the game, you must play in Challenge mode. Characters ---------- Within the game, you can play as Captain America, Iron Man, Vision and Hawkeye. Unlike its arcade counterpart and even the console versions of Captain America and the Avengers, the Game Boy game has very few differences between characters. Vision may seem to play a little smoother from what I have noticed, and Captain America has a slight lag time after he shoots a projectile because he is throwing his shield. Disregarding that, it really is a matter of 'choose your favorite Avenger'. Lifting ------- When you walk in front of an enemy, you can tap the B button to lift the enemy up by your Avenger's arms, and then use the B button again to throw the foe to the ground, usually taking him out. Lifting is, however, extremely difficult to pull off. To do this, you need to be _RIGHT_ in front of your foe, as in the on-screen avatar of the Avenger needs to pretty much be covering the sprite of the enemy you are trying to pick up - not slightly to the left of, not slightly to the right of, pretty much right directly in front. If you can pull it off, however, you will be able to eliminate most regular enemies. Additionally, you can throw them into the path of another foe and take two enemies out for the price of one. Drop Kicking ------------ As you jump into the air, you can press A again, effectively an A- doubletap, for your character to launch into a diagonal kick back down to the ground. This can be at times extremely tricky to pull off - you cannot hammer the A button twice quickly. You must let your character jump up slightly before pressing A again, but there cannot be too much lag time or else you will not be able to execute a kick. It is, however, fairly useful for the flying enemies you will come across. Additionally, in boss battles it does more than three times the damage of a projectile attack. Shooting -------- When you jump into the air and press B, your character will shoot straight forward with a projectile. When on the ground, hold Up or Down and then press B to fire straight forward (if you use just B, then you will only punch). Note that there is a little bit of lag time if you shoot from the ground before you can move again - a useful trick is to instead jump over an enemy's bullet and then shoot just before you touch the ground again. Dying ----- As you can guess, it is quite possible to die in this game. Fortunately, the one thing Captain America and the Avengers is rather lenient in is that if you die and continue with a life, it will drop you off not at the start of your current stage, but rather at the point in the stage where you died. As a result, if you are in the low 20s or under, do not be too afraid to take a death should you feel overwhelmed. However, during boss fights, if you die partway through, the boss shall have ALL his HP restored. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Scene One - The Avengers -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [SCE1] Level 1 ------- Start and head right, where you will see the first enemy of the game. Back away from him to give yourself time to jump once he shoots his gun, and shoot back at him in turn until he dies. Continue along until you see a second enemy. Move away from him up until he is off-screen - unlike the first foe, this thug will fire a bullet spray of three bullets, one that goes left, one that goes upper left and one lower left. Stay far away enough from him that you can jump between the center left and upper left bullets. You can still injure him by firing a projectile at him even when he is off-screen, so continue to do this until no more bullet spray comes at your Avenger. That is your cue that that you have wiped out the minion. Make your way right again, and you should see a thug on top of a platform. Ignore him, and head right to the far end of the screen, where another henchman will come on-screen. Attempt to pick him up, and jump and throw him at the thug on top of the platform (move away and try to hit him with projectiles instead if you cannot pick him up). Another enemy will come on-screen, so eliminate him too shortly thereafter. Once the screen allows you to progress right, continue on. You should see some sort of + shaped symbol hovering in the air. Grab it to increase your life by 5. Head up the staircase, where you will sequentially encounter two heavy-built enemies who move around and punch and kick at your character. Keep your distance at all times if you can, and stick to shooting at them instead of getting close and opening yourself up for damage. After the two of them are finished, head right and down the staircase for a bubble-shaped item which gives you 10 extra life points, and take out a normal one-bullet thug. Continue along. You will have to take out two more of the punch-kick enemies with high amounts of endurance. This time, however, you have a flat field so you can jump behind them and shoot more easily. Once you have defeated the two of them consecutively, head right to finish up the level. Level 2 ------- Head right, and you will encounter a thug on a jetpack flying around. Jump in the air and use your jump-kick to damage the thug and kill him altogether on lower difficulties. Continue right and jump over the thug, ignoring him completely, and get a 5-HP at the end. Reverse direction and jump up the platforms, until you get to the top, then go left and jump off the top for another 5-HP. Proceed right while on the building roof, and you will encounter a trio of jetpack thugs, one coming after another. Use your drop-kick to eliminate every one of them, then continue on. You will fight another jetpack foe after a few more steps, and then two more again after climbing a significant amount. Once that is done, continue on, where you shall encounter a bullet spray enemy. If you have forgotten, move to your left and shoot at the foe from afar while jumping between the occasional bullet spray. Once you are done, continue on to find two more enemies. Jump onto the upper platform and drop-kick the jetpack enemy. Jump up to the left for a 5-HP, then head back down and eliminate the bullet-spray foe at once (else he will shoot to his right, which will be inconvenient shortly). Continue on, and you will have to take out two heavy-set martial arts foes to progress. Once you do, a final jetpack enemy will try to stop your way before you can hit the end of the level at last. Level 3 ------- Level 3 is a sort of miniature boss battle. You are not fighting against any of the named villains, but rather another thug that has an exceptionally high amount of HP, which is even given on the bottom of the screen. He will shoot twice in a row before moving to the opposite end of the screen, then repeat. If you can drop-kick him, you can take off a significant chunk of HP (more than 3x with projectiles), so try to kick through him while he is moving so you have time to get to the side of the screen opposite where is he going, preserving your own HP. Once you eliminate the thug, you wrap up this level. Level 4 ------- You shall encounter two enemies in a row that are lugging shields around. These guys take a significant number of hits to take down, and will sometimes triple-punch (so you do not want to jump right into them), and sometimes they will just charge all the way to the end of the screen, and because of their shields they can actually damage you while walking past you. You should try to jump over them whenever they get close and then run to the side of the screen opposite them. Thankfully, you can still lift them up and throw them to take each one of them out. Next, you will encounter some sort of mechanical devices that spray out eight bullets at 360 degrees, with each bullet 45 degrees apart. They only move up and down, however, so stay far away from them and jump over the bullet going left, and shoot bullets at the devices when you can. Continue on after destroying two of these to fight two more shield-enemies. Move forward into an urban landscape, and you will encounter one of those bullet machines again which also moves left and right. Take it out and reward yourself with a 10-HP up on the platform, then move forward to take out yet another bullet machine, followed up by two more shield-enemies as you move out of the city, and still another bullet machine. In order as you move into an urban area again, you will fight another shield enemy, two more bullet machines, and then two more shield foes before you can finally finish up here. Level 5 ------- Proceed right to start as you will encounter a couple of the martial art foes. Pick up the first one if you can to throw him at the second thug when he comes on-screen. Progress forward, and you should see some platforms up in the air and a floor down below. Now, there are numerous single-bullet enemies along both the platforms and the floor, but here is the thing: thanks to the elevation of the platforms, once you get from one platform to the next, you do not have to worry about the thug prior. Because of that, you should move onto the platforms, and just jump over the thugs and skip fighting them altogether. On the way, you should get a 5-HP item. After a long walk, you should see a tiny heart item in the air, which is a 1-Up, giving you an extra continue. Where the 1-Up is, you will encounter a set of jetpack minions. Eliminate them with your drop-kicks. Climb up the rooftops to come to another area where you must fight two more karate-wielding henchmen. Move right from here to fight two more jetpack foes, then go up higher along the skyline to eliminate yet another two more jetpack enemies, before you can finally finish up the level. Level 6 ------- This level is the first boss battle of the game, against Whirlwind. Whirlwind will move left and right and attempt to kick and punch your Avenger character at the start. Move around and kick and shoot at him for this first little while. It is best to get your drop-kicks in here, as they can take a major chunk of damage out of him. After a while, he will turn into his whirlwind form, and will move around the battle arena. There is a set pattern to his movements, but it is fairly long and difficult to describe. You can stick to the left or right side of the fighting arena and jump over him when he comes close. When he has a lull period staying on top of the left or right side of the screens, that means he is about to come down sharp to the bottom corner, so quickly move out of the way. When is in a whirlwind, do NOT attempt to drop kick him, as it will instead damage your character. Whirlwind is still vulnerable to projectiles, so fire at him like crazy. Once his movement pattern has passed, he will revert back to normal, and move back and forth, kicking and punching again. This time, however, he will occasionally turn into Whirlwind form for a second before reverting back, so watch out for this before attempting to drop kick him. Once you finally lower Whirlwind's HP to 0 and knock him out, you will have finished the first scene. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Scene Two - Target Town -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [SCE2] Level 1 ------- Go forth at the start of the scene to fight a martial art foe. Continue on and drop down, and you should see an enemy on top of the higher roof to the right. As this is one of those three-bullet spray type enemies, stay on the lower ground just to the left of the higher roof to avoid all three bullets while on the lower section. Jump up and shoot him from afar. Once you have succeeded in taking him out, jump up and rush over right over to the next rooftop. Move forward a bit to trigger a bullet device to come out, then move left to avoid bullet spray from the thug you left behind. Shoot down the bullet device, move on, destroy another bullet device. After coming across another martial arts enemy, drop down and kill a bullet-spray foe. Move along to the end and stay down to keep out of the range of another bullet-spray enemy. Grab the heart to get an extra continue, and jump up and shoot at the bullet-spray minion to get rid of him. Jump up to where the minion formerly was, then head right over the rooftop. Take out two more bullet machines, and then two more martial art enemies to end the first level. Level 2 ------- This is the first of a few alternate levels, in which you jump into a flying vehicle and the screen scrolls right. Press and hold the B button to autofire bullets. The first set of enemies will come straight at you, moving up and down slightly, but not much. If you wish to avoid damage altogether, stay strictly at the top of the screen, and they and their bullets shall not ever touch you. The next set of opponents is slightly bigger, and they will go up and down all the way to the top and bottom of the screen. On the plus side, however, their bullets will always shoot down-left diagonally, so you can move out of the way of their bullets fairly quickly and easily. After that, you will see missiles. Hold B for autofire and slag every missile you see - they are homing missiles, and will zone in on your ship if they get to the left side of the screen. For the fourth wave of enemies, which are bubble-like in appearance, each one will alternate between coming out from the top-right or bottom-right corner, before zooming into the center by the time they hit the left side of the screen. If you wish to avoid taking damage, move between the bottom-left and top-left corner every time a new enemy comes on-screen. They will be followed by a lengthy wave of missiles that come a lot faster, then some more of the bubble-like enemies, and a final short batch of missiles before you hit the end of the level. Level 3 ------- Here, you have another unnamed henchman boss. During most of the battle, he will move around and try to punch your Avenger character. Take this time to drop-kick him. After a short period of time, he will curl up into a ball, and roll back and forth across the screen once. During this time, he will set three Molotov cocktails up across the field, which will shortly explode thereafter. When you jump out of the boss's way, make sure to land _between_ the grenades, as the explosion has a fair radius that lasts a few seconds. However, he does not have any invulnerabilities and stays in his regular form for long stints of time, so take him out to wrap this level up. Level 4 ------- Start by going right and take out a shield-bearing foe. Continue on, ignoring the rooftops, and eliminate a trio of bullet-spraying devices in the air before you come to take on another pair of shield enemies. From there, continue on through several more bullet devices until you get to fight two more shield-bearing foes. From there, continue right on the lower ground, ignoring a device up above you, as it will be out of your range fairly quickly. You will encounter the final shield foe for this stage. Take him out fast, then progress through another slag of bullet hovering devices before finally being able to exit out from the level. Level 5 ------- You shall encounter a new breed of minion. Your first foe at the start of the stage is a regular one-bullet pellet enemy, but if you get too close to him, he can jump up and do a jump-kick at you. Stay away from him and let him come to you, jumping over when he can to avoid him performing a jump-kick, and shoot to take him out. Following that, continue right, destroying a mechanical bullet device. Head forward, and two more gun slash martial artist foes will appear one after the other on top of a high ledge. Stay on the lower ground and jump and shoot at them as long as you can (in my experience, they never dropped down the ledge). Continue along the streetscape afterwards to encounter three more bullet devices - after you eliminate the second one, be sure to grab a 5-HP. Go forth and eliminate another pair of regular martial artists (no guns) higher up. Proceed right again, and you will encounter the last two bullet devices of the levels. Once they are destroyed, you can pick off another pair of martial artist thugs before finally exiting out the level. Level 6 ------- In this stage, you get to fight the Grim Reaper supervillain. To start off, the Grim Reaper will fly around, spinning his scythe as a makeshift helicopter mechanism. When he begins to move, jump right to hop over his spinning scythe as he goes left, then immediately turn around and jump left to avoid getting hit by him as he returns to the right. He will stop spinning his scythe for a short period of time, going left and right, trying to slice your Avenger character up with his scythe. It is in this period of time that you should go on the attack, especially using drop- kicks to lower his HP quickly. Once he spins his scythe again to go into the air, he will go to one side and start shooting pellets at you. The bullets act on a one-two pattern: the first bullet of every pair will go straight forward and stay level. The second bullet, however, will go forward, only to suddenly arc up and then continue. Because of this, jump during the ones that go straight forward, and stay down and shoot projectile while the second one comes out. He will then progress to his regular movement pattern, so start jumping thereafter. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Scene Three - Challenge from the Bottom of the Sea! -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [SCE3] Level 1 ------- Take out a shield-bearing foe to start, then go right slightly. Once you see a missile flying towards your Avenger, move left a bit and the missile should self-destruct long before it comes near you. Continue to take out another shield enemy, then the first bullet machine of the stage. Walk right again and backtrack to dodge another missile, then off a shield thug once more. When you get to two paths, one going up on a ledge and one going on the lower ground, take the lower path to get a 1-Up. Head back left and up to avoid a missile and destroy a bullet machine for a 5-HP. Jump down at the right end and observe for another missile to jump over before continuing to walk right. Contort around a few more missiles and destroy one more bullet machine, and you shall then encounter another pair of shield-bearing enemies. With their defeat, eliminate another bullet device and missile to come face-to-face with a final pair of shield foes. Keep an eye out for one last missile as you continue right to wrap up the level. Level 2 ------- This is another scrolling level, much like 2-2. However, this time around the level does not scroll straight horizontally - instead, it will go horizontal and vertical both at varying times. You start out going right for a bit and then down, and you will encounter moving mines. Shoot them down or just move below them when you get the chance. If you do shoot them, however, make sure the resulting explosion clears out before crossing over where they were to avoid taking damage from the aftereffects. Shortly thereafter, as you sink down and then go right, you should encounter scuba divers and worm-like enemies. Hold B for autofire again while taking them out. Down below, you do not need to worry about taking any damage if you touch the ceiling, so go up against the top of the screen if you need to. Going up and right, you will encounter several more mines, with a scuba diver and a few worms again. Once you go down, be sure to grab the 5-HP, but stay high up on the screen so you do not accidentally run into any mines. After going down, right and down again, you will encounter another scuba diver, so be sure to watch out for him, and grab a second 5-HP going down. After that, you should be going right for the last time, so eliminate the last scuba diver to wrap the level up. Level 3 ------- Level 3 is a little bit different from prior platforming segments in that there is not a single forced stop in this entire area where you must fight a few enemies to progress. You can go through the whole level without killing or destroying a single foe. Additionally, there are several layers of floors, with five different elevations to follow. There is, however, no 1-Up present in the Stage, so no detouring from going right all the way through. Jump over the first gap in floors and skip the 1-bullet enemy here, heading up to the top platform. Grab the 5-HP and continue on. You may wish to eliminate the next enemy, a three-bullet spray type foe. Jump over the enemy after that. When you come to the machine spitting out 8 bullets in 360 degrees, ignore it, and instead drop down the gap underneath it. Head right, drop down a gap, then left, down a gap, and finally right to end the stage. Level 4 ------- You will start off by encountering a sort of hopping tortoise enemy. You can cause it the most damage by punching it just as it starts to jump. Continue along, and you shall encounter a new type of jetpack enemy that tends to stay in one position for awhile before moving around. It can also fire three bullets at a time in a bullet spray. As always, you can drop-kick it to cause a ton of damage and destroy it outright on lower difficulties. After you eliminate a second one of these guys, walk right for a ways staying on the ground floor. Watch out for Molotov cocktails that will explode as you walk along, until you encounter a third one of the net jetpack foes. Take him out on the ground, and grab a 5-HP before climbing up a couple of platforms. Avoid another cocktail bomb as you eliminate another jetpack enemy. Climb up some more, watching out for more Molotov cocktails, and once the screen stops scrolling, you will have to eliminate three straight jetpackers. From there, continue on right to another hopping tortoise, then drop down to the left side to get a 5-HP just slightly above ground level. Turn around and proceed right again to kill another jetpack enemy. Make your way around another batch of cocktails lying on the ground while dashing forward, along with a bullet machine. Take another hopping tortoise out and a final bullet device, then two more tortoises before you can finally wrap this area up. Level 5 ------- According to the manual this should be some sort of named boss, but it is not. Rather, it is another upgraded thug, who can shoot two bullets in a row, move around and hop up and down, and fire three bullets at once in a bullet spray. He will only perform his three bullet spray when he is at the edge of the screen, and he will do it three times in a row. Eliminate him to end the scene altogether. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Scene Four - The Giant Laser Cannon! -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [SCE4] Level 1 ------- After a little short scene, you will be dropped off in front of a single one-bullet enemy. Take him out, then continue forth and drop-kick a single jetpack foe. Move along and quickly eliminate another jetpack enemy before having to contend with a martial artist minion. Continue forth to fight another jetpack enemy, and make sure to grab the 10-HP in the air while you are there. Kill another martial artist at the bottom of the stairs. Walk a stretch of flat ground and then down some more steps, and you will come face to face with yet another jetpack henchman. Take him out, and you should encounter two more martial artists before you are allowed to progress any further. Going down another flight of steps will cast you against two more jetpack fighters still, who constitute the last enemies in this level. Level 2 ------- Stick to the ground floor at the start and jump up to shoot bullets at the one-bullet thug, letting his bullets harmlessly sail over your head. Once you have taken him out, climb up and destroy a bullet machine. A martial artist gunman will come out from the right. If you can pick him up, that will be perfect, as you can use him to destroy another bullet machine as you continue on. After said bullet device, you should encounter another bullet device as you jump over a large gap. Keep your distance from this one, as it can move left and right. It will be followed up shortly thereafter by two more martial artist gunmen: stay on the lower floor here and shoot out projectiles from afar for as long as possible to inflict damage on them before they attempt to pursue your Avenger character. Once they are out of the way, fall down to grab yourself a 10-HP. You can actually skip the karate gunman here, as he will not follow you: instead, jump up above. Try to lift up this gunman here if you can, and throw him at a third gunman coming onto the screen from the right side to knock two annoying enemies out at once. Proceed forward to fight another bullet machine, then drop to the lower of two floors to propel energy blasts (or a shield) at the two remaining martial artist slash gunmen to come at you. Drop down to encounter another three-bullet gunmen. Skip over both him and another bullet device and rush down and right to end the stage. Level 3 ------- The boss here vaguely resembles the boss from 2-3, in that he can roll up in a ball. However, he is a lot more dangerous in this iteration, as he will move up and down in a sinusoidal wave pattern to go to the left side of the screen and then back. When he is in normal form, he will shoot four bullets out, one quickly after the other, leaving little room to jump in between them. Watch out when he does this - your best bet is to do a high jump to clear two bullets, then quickly jump again and clear the next two. Level 4 ------- Hopping tortoises make their return here, so take one out with a punch or two to start before eliminating a shooting device. Proceed down the staircase to off another hopping tortoise and another shooting device, then drop straight down the gap. Jump up to either side to set off the cocktails while staying out of their explosion radii, then head left, making sure to avoid two more Molotov cocktail explosions. Hop over the gap to destroy a bullet device for a 5-HP, then drop down and destroy a second bullet machine. Proceed right from here over an obnoxious number of Molotov cocktails before heading down the gap at the end. Head right down bottom over a final cocktail while destroying yet another bullet device. Continue right and fight two shield-bearing foes once the screen stops scrolling. With them eliminated, crusade forward some more to take on another tortoise. Follow along and drop down, ignoring the cocktail and then the bullet device, then walk left, beating up another shield-carrying enemy. Cross over the gap at the end to get a 5-HP and continue down the gap while holding right to avoid falling right into a Molotov cocktail explosion. Destroy the bullet device down here, then continue on down to the end to fight still another shield-carrying thug. Run towards the end to finish this level. Level 5 ------- It should be noted that in Level 5, there are gaps between platforms that will cause you to actually fall to your death, so avoid them at all costs. The very first gap is one such, so shoot down the bullet device from the first platform so it does not hit you with a pellet that causes you to recoil into the abyss, then jump across said gap. Take out a shield enemy up here, then jump up another gap to the next platform. When you encounter a second shield minion here, do not actually attempt to fight him: instead, allow him to charge you and he shall fall right off the platform. Continue jumping along the platforms, and you will encounter several more bullet machines. Destroy them if you are not confident of crossing the platforms without getting hit - otherwise, skip them. After a short period of time, you should come across another shield minion. Here, jump back to the platform prior and let him fall to his doom before advancing forward again. Repeat this for a second time while climbing up and meeting another thug, then proceed forward and eliminate several more bullet devices. You should shortly thereafter encounter a thug again on the same platform as a bullet machine - if you can, lift the henchman up and throw him at the machine. One more bullet device later, you should encounter a final shield- bearing minion, followed by one bullet-spewing machine. Take them both out to end the level. Level 6 ------- Here, you must battle another boss, who vaguely appears to be the supervillain Ultron. Ultron is much like Whirlwind was at the end of Scene 1 - he can transform himself into a whirling motion and zip around the battlefield from end to end, damaging your Avenger if he comes in contact with you. The primary difference here is that unlike Whirlwind, Ultron can be damaged by your drop-kick while he is in his high-motion form, so make heavy use of your drop- kick. Additionally, the whirling motion created by Ultron is far smaller than Whirlwind was, so in some sense that portion of the battle is easier. While in his normal form, however, Ultron is a little more tricky than Whirlwind was. Although he does like to use punches a lot, Ultron can also fire bullets, so watch out for them as you approach him and jump over any ammunition he shoots out. Once you fell him you will be done the penultimate stage. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Scene Five - The End of Red Skull! -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [SCE5] Level 1 ------- Start by lifting up the first martial artist fighter here if you can, and toss him into the next martial artist as you climb up. Eliminate a third and final martial artist while going up the stairs. When you jump to grab the 5-HP, quickly move to the left side to avoid falling into a Molotov cocktail. Set it off, then shoot down a 1-bullet enemy. Head right. When falling down, press against the left to avoid a bullet device, then continue on and set a cocktail off. Wait for the bullet device here to fire, then jump over the bullets and down below, pressing against the right wall to dodge another cocktail trap. Set it off, then head right to lure out a martial artist thug again. Execute him to continue along. Jump into the air to obtain a 5-HP and press right. Once you hit the ground, head left, setting off a series of cocktails on the way, destroying a bullet device at the end. Continue your descent, pressing to the left, and kill a 1-bullet minion. Jump down to the left, then reverse directions once you touch ground to go right. Once you see a thug, move away from him as this is a 3-bullet henchman. As soon as you have filled him up with enough projectiles, dash over and down (no cocktail this time) to destroy another bullet shooting machine. Head right from here to exterminate a martial artist, and grab a 5-HP as you go down. Break a bullet machine going left, then descend while pressing against the left wall to avoid a cocktail down below in the center of the floor. Shoot up another bullet machine and take down a pair of martial artists before the screen will scroll again, then destroy a final bullet machine. Take out a final pair of martial artist henchmen and then walk right to clear the first level of the final scene. Level 2 ------- Skip the first enemy you come across here until you come to an enemy shooting 3 bullets out in a spray. Pick him up if you can, jump up to the higher ledge and throw him at the bullet device here. Head left slightly, then quickly jump up to a higher ledge as soon as you possibly can and run right until you encounter a martial artist gunman. Eliminate him by dropping to the small niche to the left and shooting him as long as you can. Head forward and destroy several machines spitting out bullets, and then two more martial artist gunmen thereafter. Following them, you will have to fight a hover-pod thug to progress. Stick to the lower left side and jump and shoot at him when you get the chance. Fortunately, it does not take as many hits to kill him as it does other thugs. Walk a little bit further to destroy one last bullet machine followed up by two more hover-pod minions to finally clear the level. Level 3 ------- Here, you shall face off against Crossbones. Crossbones will walk around and do a little bit of punching here and there, but he is most dangerous when he is standing on one side of the screen. When he is standing, he will launch out what appear to be turtle shells. On some of the occasions, this will not be too difficult to work around - the shells will merely zip from where Crossbones is to the opposite end of the screen, and you can jump over the shells, which will total six before he changes to doing something else, sending projectiles at him while he is standing or moving forward and getting in a drop-kick or two. Be sure not to land right where the shell explodes, however, as the explosion will last a few seconds. It is the second of his shell-firing attacks that is more a worry. Crossbones can fire a shell that will do a loop around, stop for a brief second, then fly left and do a second loop at the left edge of the screen. Stand slightly to the right of where the sign with the 7 on it is in the background - this is where the shell will be at its lowest in the flight. Jump every time after a shell completes its first loop to avoid getting hit by it. Once you finish off Crossbones, congratulate yourself, as you have defeated the second-to-last boss. Level 4 ------- Head right and take out a bullet device, then jump over a missile as it comes out. Once the screen stops scrolling, two jetpack foes will appear, so eliminate each of them in turn by drop-kicking them. Jump down and head left, dodging a missile in the meantime, to grab a 5-HP. Turn around and dash right, jumping over another missile and killing two more jetpack enemies at the end of the screen scroll. Descend down from the side of the scaffold once the bullet device has fired and watch out for a missile coming from your left side. Run right past the bullet firing machine and take out another set of jetpackers to be allowed to progress. Drop down another scaffold and destroy the missile to your left for a 1-Up. Walk right and then dash left after you have lured out the missile to have it explode short of delivery. Destroy a bullet device, dodge another missile, and then off another pair of jetpack enemies again. Drop off straight down and lure two missiles coming from the right to let them detonate short of your Avenger, then continue right through two more missiles and kill a lone jetpack thug this time around. Sink further down the level and skip through one last missile to end this level. Level 5 ------- This is the last platforming level, so brace yourself. Head right and destroy a bullet machine to start, then drop down and kill a 1-bullet gunman. Jump down to the next highest level afterwards against another 1-bullet gunner to get yourself a 5-HP, then press against the right wall as you fall down to the next platform to avoid a Molotov cocktail. Jump over a few more cocktails, then fall down to a lower platform here, ignoring the bullet device. Turn around right and face a hoverpod minion, and kill him with a few projectile shots before finally dropping down further. Take down another single bullet gunner, then drop down pressing against the right wall to avoid the explosion from a cocktail. Head left over a few more cocktails, then jump over the gap to destroy a bullet machine for a 5-HP. Drop down and try to pick up the gunman here, so you can go forth and throw him at the hoverpod, destroying it in the process. Drop down, rush left over some more cocktails, and then jump over the gap for another 5-HP. Descend again and jump right over the machine once it is below the ledge. Head right to take on two martial artists followed by three gunmen in a row. If you can eliminate all of them, head right to finish up the level and take on the final boss. Level 6 ------- This is the final level of the game, a boss battle against the Red Skull, so do not be afraid to lose a life or two if you must to familiarise yourself with the Red Skull's attack patterns, who has a whopping 100HP. Red Skull's first attack is a simple punch-kick combination that he will perform when walking around. Nothing much to worry about, you can snipe at him from afar or get in close to perform a drop-kick on him. He will not jump into the air to hit you, so no need to worry about that. Red Skull's second attack sees him leaping to the upper left corner, then moving through the air to the upper right corner, then back to the upper left corner. While he is moving, he will call missiles down from the sky, eight in total, always dropping in the same four specific spots, leaving an explosion aftereffect for about a second thereafter. When Red Skull does this, he is invulnerable to projectile attacks. However, he is still weak to drop-kick attacks, but since he is high up in the air, it may be better to simply try and avoid his attacks while he is performing this attack to avoid taking damage if you cannot consistently execute the drop- kick while high up in the air. Also, when he leaps to the upper-left corner, your Avenger character will NOT take damage if he touches Red Skull, so you may feel free to try drop-kicking him here (though he is fast to leap up). The supervillain's final attack sees him going to either end of the screen and tossing out bouncing bombs that will explode on impact. When he does this, it is best to locate your character in a spot where the bomb will be at its lowest point in the bounce to jump over it, and then send a shot at Red Skull. If he is firing from the left side, stand where the black strips in the background are and jump as soon as he sends out a bomb. If it is from the right side, stand slightly to the right of the black strips. Once you whittle his HP down to zero, congratulations! You have finally defeated Captain America and the Avengers. To get the best ending, however, you must play at the highest difficulty, Challenge mode. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Donations/Amazon -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [DONT] I don't really care too much about donations, but if you are feeling generous, feel free to send one via PayPal to gammabetaalphafaqs AT gmail DOT com Alternatively, if you ever order any items from Amazon.com, go to the link below. I write FAQs for plenty of obscure old games with no FAQs, and having a physical copy of the game (and even better, a manual) is superior to not.
