This, however, is the first time I've written a guide for a wrestling game, so this is new territory for me. This is one of the very few WWE video games (for any system) that lacks a complete strategy guide, and I've taken over a wrestling league of my own in the past month, so it's fitting that WWF Superstars is the subject of my latest guide. And now for the review: WWF Superstars was one of the first wrestling games released for the old Game Boy. As you would expect, the graphics are rather limited, and the sprites often producing weird transparency effects when the wrestlers are in an overlapping position. Another graphics problem is the lack of color sometimes makes it hard to tell which wrestler is which. The music in this game is surprisingly good. The theme music is definitely above-average for a Game Boy game, and wrestling fans will appreciate the fact that the game includes each wrestler's theme song. The game is somewhat challenging at first, although you may find it becomes excessively easy once you learn how to manipulate the game. The main problem with this game is it's very much condensed and abridged. The movesets are pretty limited and there are only five wrestlers to choose from, and there's no multiplayer support, alternate modes of play, or custom match types like the steel cage. If you're feeling nostalgic and want a simple Game Boy wrestling game, you might like this. Otherwise, you'd be better off playing a slightly newer game with better graphics and more features. =============================================================================== Controls/Move List [CONTR] =============================================================================== Here's a concise description of all the controls and moves in the game: ---Menu screens--- ENTER: Advance to next screen/skip cutscenes A/B: Choose wrestler at startup/advance to next screen on pre-match dialogues ---At most times during the match--- Control Pad: Move Control Pad twice in the same direction: Begin running ---Both wrestlers standing--- A: Punch A repeatedly: Punch combo B: Grab the opponent/body slam SELECT: Throw the opponent to ringside (tough to do but causes a lot of damage) ---Opponent on the ground--- A: Elbowdrop/stomp the opponent (depending on which wrestler you control) B: Pin the wrestler (won't succeed unless your opponent's energy is low) ---Opponent rising from the mat--- B + Control Pad away from your wrestler: Throw opponent over your shoulder B + Control Pad forward: Piledriver B + Up: Normal suplex Hold B: Choke hold A (during choke hold): Weak punch attack ---Your wrestler on the ground--- A: Get up (you can grab the opponent if you do it at the right time) Control Pad Up/Down: Roll ---Running--- A: Dropkick B: Diving elbow/clothesline ---Turnbuckle--- Control Pad Up (when near upper two turnbuckles): Get on turnbuckle Control Pad Down (while standing on a turnbuckle): Get down A: Splash (a risky move that can hurt yourself if it fails) ---Outside the ring--- Control Pad Up: Climb back onto the mat Control Pad Down: Return to the aisle Control Pad Left/Right: Move left and right =============================================================================== Frequently Asked Questions [QUEST] =============================================================================== Q: How do I win a match? A: There are two ways you can win a match. The more common way is to pin your opponent. Use various moves to reduce the opposing wrestler's energy gauge to zero or near-zero, then knock him down and pin him by holding B. Alternatively, you can win a match by count-out. Throw your opponent out of the ring, and keep him from returning to the ring for ten seconds and he'll be disqualified. Be careful, though, because if he returns to the ring while you're in the count- out area, the count will be set to zero but will begin counting for you to return! Q: What's the easiest way to win in this game? A: Knock down your opponent (with a suplex or a punching combination, or wait for him to miss an attack), and with your opponent positioned between you and the ropes, keep pressing A to deliver a succession of elbowdrops or stomps. Depending on the wrestlers involved, you can cut your opponent's energy bar by as much as half with this technique. Q: I'm getting whupped. What should I do? A: Both wrestlers slowly recover their energy as the match progresses. If your energy is much lower than the opponent's, climb onto one of the upper turnbuckles and wait until both wrestlers' energy gauges are filled equally. Yeah, it's a pretty cheap trick. You might not want to do use this trick as frequently if you have a five-minute time limit for the match, however. Q: What are the distinctions between the different wrestlers in this game? A: The differences aren't huge, but there do seem to be slight variations in speed and strength. Hulk Hogan is more power-oriented, while Randy Savage has better punching combos than suplexes. I'd rank the wrestlers, from power-based to speed-based: Hulk Hogan, Mr. Perfect, Ultimate Warrior, Ted Dibiase (The Million Dollar Man), and Macho King Randy Savage. Q: Did you say you run a wrestling league yourself? A: Yes, I do. I book matches twice a week with characters based on the people participating in the federation. Match results are generated semi-randomly by Zeus Pro 4.0.5 (www.archive.forums.mfgg.net/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=6232). If you'd like to join, e-mail me. And yes, this one can safely be filed under shameless self-promotion. =============================================================================== Version History [VERSN] =============================================================================== There's not a lot to say with this simple game, so I didn't have to put a lot of work into this guide.
