Esper Dream(FDS) FAQ/Walkthrough version 1.0.0 by schultw.andrez@sbcglobal.net(anti-spam spoonerism) Please do not reproduce for profit without my consent. You won't be getting much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and I just wanted to save a memory of an old game and the odd solutions any way I could. Please send me an email referring to me and this guide by name if you'd like to post it on your site. Note that this guide has no text maps and assumes you have access to my maps on GameFAQs.com. I would recommend having one map in your browser, the guide in another tab, and the emulator(let's just bring the open secret totally into the open, shall way) in another, so you can alt-tab between them. Ad space: http://faqs.retronintendo.com is the NES FAQ Completion Project. It's inspired me to look at some games I never would have, otherwise. Have a look at it and see all we've done! This is not strictly an NES game, but FDS games came from a discussion topic about the proejct. It clearly has an NES flavor, though. In this case it even has an NES sequel, Esper Dream 2. ================================ OUTLINE 1. INTRODUCTION 2. BASICS 2-1. CONTROLS 2-2. ITEMS 2-3. IMPROVING 3. ENEMIES 4. WALKTHROUGH 5. WALKTHROUGH The first thing to do is enter the mayor's house. Say yes, you are who you are, and then offer to help. That will open up the door to the grey house in the northwest corner. You can't really buy any equipment, so go there. Your first object is to build yourself up a few levels. Don't be concerned with gold except where you know there are fixed enemies that give gold. You will find purses in the course of your quest and, when you need it, you'll have places you can go to beat gold-rich enemies. So here is what to do at the start. You should be able to beat up monsters without getting killed. See the monsters section for how to deal with the various enemies. You will get your first level at 100 experience, and the next levels are at 200 and 300, so you can build up quickly. At 300, you get Psi Beam, which allows you to mow down enemies. Psi Beam seems to elicit more treasure--or it is less likely to shoot treasure. You may not have any EP to start, but once you find an (E) tablet in combat, you'll get the boost. And the (H) tablets of course work better with each level you get, as they replenish hit points. This means you shouldn't ever have to go back to the inn and heal up. Early on, money is at a premium, so you want to avoid this. Some monsters block your way, and you will not be able to get around them. Often they guard a critical location. Other monsters walk around, and you may not wish to tackle them at first. Now the first bits, while not strictly necessary for the game, are fun side quests that give gold later on, so you should go through the paces. 4-1. COMPUTER LAB When you enter the computer lab, you'll see a table to the right. It will have a door underneath it. You will want to enter the door. That takes you to the table. You can go along the bottom of the table to get near the computer saying "in". Blue worms guard the screen, which you need to enter. Flies, ladybugs and more worms are also around in the UR in fixed combat. 4-1-1. FETCH QUEST ITEMS When you are ready, enter the computer and walk in the spiral to get the ring. You'll be introduced to fish here. When you come out, the fixed footprints will reappear, but they are easy to beat. If you want, muck around til you get a level. Then leave the table and go towards the bottom of the screen. There are ladybugs guarding the table below. Go along the top of the passage to fight only one group. The table has a lot of enemies blocking you. Yellow and green flies on bottom and top--use both of them for target practice and to get a bit of extra gold- -then enter the next computer. Flies guard your passage left. Go all the way left, then down and into the spiral. There's $100 there. Then retreat and go right at the t-intersection. You'll face fish at the roadblock when the path turns down. Keep going, first to the DL corner then the DR. A green fish, then red flies, will block your path to the letter. You may have to circle around the red flies a lot. Get the letter and get out. I broke level 3 around here. You can stay around and get to level 4 to prepare for the longer maze if you want. By now you should probably be able to beat the monsters pretty easily, and even better, they take fewer shots to kill and do less damage, because you're at a higher level. If you want to build up levels, walk around. But that is a bit inefficient. Levels just happen. For gold, enter the terminal and exit to recharge the flies blocking everywhere. I wouldn't do this right away, and in fact there are better places. But this is just an idea of how recycling the screen can be useful. 4-1-2. POWERING UP Go to the bottom, left, up and left. Don't enter the door in the wall--it leads to the forest isle, which is too tough for you. Instead loop down and left. Blue ladybugs guard the top, purple fish the bottom. Loop back up and right and enter table #3. This is a bit more than a treasure run. It'll make you better in combat. I'm wary of the right fixed fight(purple fish) because it can contain multiple fish, but the left one features lucrative red flies. As you go through here, try to avoid enemies, as you may draw multiple fish. This is tricky, but on the other hand, there are few fixed fights. Use a lot of psi beams if you get stuck, and don't let an enemy land on you. You can follow the path as you enter, go left at the first T, then down and left. Go up at the T for $100. Then retreat go left and loop around. Go left at the bottom of the T to the DL and up for $300, then retreat, go up and get the box. The box helps your psi beam be more effective. More twirlers fire at the enemies, which is great for fighting flies. Plus it'll give you something to do as you build up. Blue fish barricade the box. 4-1-3. GOLD AND LEVELS Let's go to the NW now to get another box. W N then E at the new tiles. Then around the barriers N W S W and in the door. Ladybugs guard the bottom entrance in, red flies the top. You also have red flies just right of the computer. Go all the way right and down in the maze--more red flies--then turn left and follow the path. $100 + a box. Retreat, and now you can exit if you want. Now you can really whale on the red flies outside the computer. Re-enter the computer and go back out to the right and up. Fight again twice. You will get 1-2 gold purses worth $30 each. When you get to 2500 gold, return to town and buy the leather. The pistol is handy but does not give as much leverage. With good defense, all enemies in the computer lab become innocuous. Even without great defense, though, you should be able to run at enemies and knock them out. Also, when you are in town, go 1D1L of the grey door to the computer lab. Trade your ring for a silver ring. You will trade that for a gold ring later. 4-1-4. FINAL MAZE AND BOSS The boss fight actually isn't very critical to the next parts, so you can just complete it later when you have more powerful armor--powerful enough to walk up and blast away. Returning to the west, you can go along the right side til you get to the DR. Then come back left and take the second passage right for money($100) before retreating and taking the center passage right. Go up at the T and work your way through the enemies for the boss fight. The boss isn't bad if you have psi. Just fire when it opens its mouth and you are 1/2 a screen away. The timing is tricky, but you do not need to use regular shots, which are trickier because you can't stay off to the side, though it's about the same timing. I dumped him with level 7 and a pistol, though you will have the leather and probably another few levels from the gold you've got. Later on you will be able to come back here and trash the robots in the area, more for gold than experience, but before you do it's best to have leather and a few more levels. I'd actually hold off on the pistol. You are probably better off saving up for the bazooka, which you will find in the next town. **Note: The UR area of the final maze appears to have nothing special. It is just filler. There is no treasure--I tried walking through the walls--and the stairs just lead you back. 4-2. FOREST ISLE You'll need a key to complete this. Buying a few makes it more convenient, but you only need one to make it to the boss fight. However, because you can detour to the ice world and get some nice treasure quickly behind closed doors, I fully recommend buying five keys. There is some gold here, but for the harder to get stuff, I will refer you to my maps. 4-2-1. OPTIONAL PREPARATION If you wish to build up beforehand, go back and build up to level 10 so you have teleport. It is handy if you are in HP trouble or just too tired to make your way back. If you want to use brute force, you may even want to get up to 7000 gold, because you will really be able to use the cash for the next armor you will find on the forest isle. But you should not need to. Your defense should be adequate. If you get low on hit points, just exit the boss area. Also you may need to leave the area and return. You probably have enough money for healing, but you can also go back to the computer lab area via the town and build up that way. Later you'll find a door to a new town. But until then, you'll have to muddle around here. 4-2-2. THE SEED Head east of the town to the path, then go south where you'll see a new grey house. That leads to the forest isle. Enemies are tougher here and can stun you from afar. Go to the south shore, then head east before the bottleneck/isthmus. Run up at the east shore and step on the spikes to enter the dungeon. This one is not hard. Cast the Esper Lamp spell to see where you're going. It lasts the entire time you are in a dungeon. Go east and take the southern passage to loop and get $50 gold. Then head out and take the upper passage to the east wall. Go down, then right and up and right. You will get the seed. You shouldn't need teleport to get out here. But if you wind up low on HP after walking over the spikes, bail back home. Once back home, trade your seed for the tree with the green clad man next to the dungeon. 4-2-3. FIRST "REAL" MAZE Make sure you have a ~150 EP bunker before starting. You need to cast light, and you need to be able to exit easily. Go south from the entry and east. There will be a mouth to enter. Do so. Walk up along the left side and when you must turn R U, you can use a key in the above door to the right if you have an extra one for the magic power-up. If you don't have one, just skirt around the structure to the UR til you can enter it. There are lots of yellow flies to pick off anyway. none is tough. You can use a spell to escape. This is all you have to do here. 4-2-4. SECOND MAZE This maze is on the island east of where you started. It is SE of a desert, and it has a secret door that allows you a power-up. You can get $100 by going NW first, then returning to the stairs. Then go east along the top. There's a secret door to the north at the end of the passage past fixed Moai heads. Go through it and to the left. You'll need to fight some robots. Past them, you will get the magic after a spiral. The teleport on the other side leads to maze #3. Don't take it. Instead, go back to the DL and get the gold. Don't enter that teleport, either. Rather, you should just exit. Go NE along the coast, then south. Head west to the desert and go up and enter the town. 4-2-5. FOREST VILLAGE Trade the tree for the nut in the first house to the right. There's nothing you'll want to buy, yet, so just leave after doing this. You can explore to find a man who will buy a gold ring in the SE for $3000. You only have a silver one, though. You can also rest here for $120. It's convenient, although if you're close to full health, don't bother yet. 4-2-6. RING QUEST/ICE PALACE DETOUR Now you can detour to the ice palace to complete the ring quest. Do so by either teleporting home and taking the grey door right of the mayor's(N E of the forest door) or you can head south across the desert then west to the building. It leads to about the same location, but you need to fight your way out. If you want to be tricky about things, you can enter the cliffs(SW in town) then move into the next door, then go down the stairs, right, and up the stairs. Because just hacking through from the NW--S E N E S E N--makes 7 fights where you probably need to use lots of psi's. You'll want to be healed up for this, and you'll want to avoid random fights. Either way you go, use Psi Beam repeatedly to hack through the enemies. For the first stairs, pick any fixed enemy. Then go through the center to get more crabs. There are more crabs, then ducks, after that in the corridor to the right. Now you are at the cliffs door. Go down between the frozen bodies. Go right into three combats. Oh frabjous day! First you have red flies. Then purple crabs. Then green ducks. Go up and now you face a lump of 4 enemies. DR, red flies, so pick them off. On the left, purple crabs. D and R, blue robots. So you should take advantage of the weak link blue robots. The village is behind here. Waiting just outside here is a good place to build up gold quickly, but don't exit to the village, as you have to flip between the disk sides. Enter the maze on the right and return to recharge the fights if you want. The magic number here is $10500, after the money you get from the island and forest village quests, which totals $5000. Then you can buy stuff in the forest village without returning. 4-2-7. ISLAND VILLAGE Enter the island village. Trade the silver ring for the gold ring in the left house. The house right of this trades an iron ring for a gold, a ripoff, so go to the next house above on the right. Trade the nut for $2000. Awesome! You can rest up if you need EP. Now exit and teleport home--or fight back through if you want. You want to get to the forest village. Go E and S in it and trade the gold ring for $3000. In the SW, buy the devil first, then work your way to buying the bazooka. It even fires cool new stuff. You're now equipped to take on a good chunk of the rest of the game. If you need to get to $10500, then the ice world is the place to get it. Your armor is so good, you can almost run into enemies now. Still, it's quicker to shoot them. In the future, though, if you need levels, the computer lab may be the best place to go. You can beat up the red flies quickly and painlessly. Other monsters, you have to sit and shoot them. With red flies, you get a lot of psi recharges. Worst case, you need to go back to town to heal up. But gold should no longer be a problem. 4-2-8. THE THIRD MAZE/THE BOSS FIGHT It's a long walk to the third maze, but it's either that or walking through the secret door again. Unfortunately the lower teleport hole leads to the first real maze, which sets you back. Avoid the spike combat before entering maze #3, because then you will walk on spikes in combat, causing more damage. The bottom passage on the right winds around for $500, but you can take the right bottom and the door up to save time, if you have >2 keys. The right passage on the bottom eventually winds to the boss fight, but you can go straight down and use a key to save time. You will wind up DR, seeing some holes below, then go left, down and right. The passage turns up and you see a door. You can save time going straight down and using a key on the door below. There are some disappearers here that can be taxing. You need to shoot them when they reappear. If there is one, it appears in the center. In the very DR you will have a room with two holes. The bottom leads back to the UL. The top leads to the boss. Take out the right fight and take out the moai heads. The other two fights are disappearers. For the boss fight, I pretty much just randomly used psi and didn't worry about getting hit, and I got through pretty quickly as level 12(and I had just a pistol.) You should do the same. 4-3. ICE PALACE The ice world has lots of teleports and doors you need keys for. The rod, a mini-treasure, is in plain view, but you need to move between the maze and outside. For this, have 15 keys just in case(10 bare minimum--beat up enemies for a bit til you've got the cash). The esper lamp from the forest isle is also helpful??. 4-3-1. WALKING AROUND ABOVE Take a right below the 2nd stairs south. Loop clockwise and take the igloo into the maze. Go south and defeat the espers guarding to S area, by humans: leads to specs and box E of that: nothing really SW: nothing NW: home, treasure, forest world N, W-ish: $500, spikes then box N, E-ish: leads to boss. 6 keys either way. NE: to teleport, also island village far east: passage to rod through spikes 4-3-2. WALKING AROUND BELOW Let's get a box first. There are several teleportals on this level and a lot of dead ends. You'll notice that if you take the nearest stairs down, they lead to a dead end with a door and enemies behind it--red robots. The gold is not worth it, so don't use a key. The best place to start is S E N, past the crabs. Enter the hexagonal igloo. If you want some gold, which you don't need, go W S and back E N. Otherwise, W S and W at the T, then move a few steps S then E, then S along the passage. Hit the east wall. Go over the spikes and then you should be able to enter the stairs from the east. Above the stairs, you have a closed off area with a box. You can just use teleport to return home. Heal up and come back. 4-3-3. ESPER SPECS While not strictly necessary, these help you see the ghosts. Plus there's another box down here. Go south down the stairs and south again. Before the winged statues, go east. After going south, take the passage west and up. There are ghosts here. Run to a corner, turn around and use psi when they get near. Enter the igloo and go south on the corridor. There are two doors to enter with more fixed ghost fights. Get the spectacles, and now further ghost fights are trivial. Return to the corridor and folow it to its end. Go south through two doors for boxes. Return home. Incidentally, going right at the bottom above leads to trading a key for $300. But it is a slight waste of time. 4-3-4. THE ROD This begins your quest for the critical wand item. Enter the cliffs area from your home village, then switch to the house right next to it. Go down the stairs and east past the fights, then down to the DR. Head back left, then up at the wall. Bash through the fights and enter the igloo. The winding path is one way, with a trip through the spikes. E S W N E N W S(spikes) W S E S W N. There are some nuisance fights on the spikes, so use psi liberally. Then when you resurface, you will see the rod. Teleport to return and heal. 4-3-5. THE BOSS FIGHT Again, enter here via the cliffs so you don't lose much PSI or Energy. Go west and into the igloo above the left columns of frozen people. Either way you go, you get to the fight after just six keys. Starting south is a bit quicker, but either way, there are forced fights. Avoid the teleports. Even approaching from the top still puts you on the spikes. You need to just time psi-firing up and moving to the side to win this, then move back and fire again. You need to kill both the faces and the enemy firing at you, but if you are level 14 it should be no problem. The enemy is easy to time. You may get hit once at first. ??strategy details. 4-4. THE CLIFFS Find the entry to this world in the SW of town. You may wish to detour to the Sky Palace here, to trade the rod for the staff. See 4-5 start for details here--you need not to waste barrier spells, but you need them to get by any appreciable amount of enemies. Rest in the SE, then go S along the E wall--a secret passage--and W. You'll need all your magic for this one. You'll probably need to rest when you get back. If you don't have enough power, go to the NE part of the ice world. It is by the right of the two doors. Work your way down and right and up for the big batch of fights that should be much easier now. I was able to get through on level 14, but if you want the safety of 15 or 16, I don't blame you. Use barrier on the walking mechanoids, who run at you if you shoot them. 4-4-1. GETTING AROUND The cliffs are a maze with a lot of dead ends--holes with nothing in them except sarcophagi and enemies. You need to find the town(NE), the crystal, and the boss. The enemies are tougher here, so you need to be prepared to take damage. You may wish to get one box first. Oddly, another box is on the base of one of the bridges. I don't see how you would get at it. But the box can get easily is south, west and south to the corner and east. It is a good way to get acclimated to the area. You need to fight red robots to get by, and you may be pinned into a random encounter. Reverse on the bridge if need be, and walk around the hole to the money. You can also use the hole to duck encounters. Once inside, mechanoids guard the very top. Trees, which you generally want to avoid, cover the middle. Red robots are at the bottom. Take the top way. There is a passage to the sky area in the SE, but it puts you behind even worse monsters. There is also some money lying around, but you don't need that. One thing to be careful of exiting holes--you always exit on the north. 4-4-2. CLIFFS VILLAGE This is your first destination. Do what you need to get to the UR. Here is the path to take. East along the path, right gravel bridge up, right all the way and up. Now trade the staff for the wand. The wand is one of the two treasures. There are three combats after the bridge up--trees, red robots, and mechanoids. Use freeze when necessary. It is worth it. Now be sure you have 50 EP before you trade the staff for the wand. You may need to go back home and heal after this. 4-4-3. THE CRYSTAL The crystal is to the north, by a winding road. You need to win a few big fights to get there. From the village, you can return home, heal, return to the cliffs, and go up the left. Use psi to get past the combat on spikes--it is a tough one and, if you emulate, I recommend pausing and going so you only face one tree. Then turn up and go back right. You'll fight red robots and mechanoids. Turn up and go back left. Red robots are on the spikes, then mechaoids on plain surface past a green tree fight. The crystal is in the hole. Three encounters form a phalanx--the top is a red tree encounter. Take your chances with that, walk around and get on the stairs. On getting the crystal, go back home--exit the hole and teleport--and trade it for the ruby in the southeast. Then go to the ice world's island village and trade that for the garnet. The garnet is the other of the two treasures. 4-4-4. BOSS FIGHT This is nontrivial, with several fights guarding you, where you probably have to use the barrier spell, before you get to the main enemy. Before this I recommend getting to level 20 at the very least. You can buy power ups with your extra gold--these seem to improve your spells. ?? The boss is two king tut heads. I took 1280 psi to beat the twin heads. You freeze the game, run up to one and shoot continually, and right when the seventh beep comes, freeze them again. Anticipate it a bit if you are having trouble firing. Continue til one dies, then pick off another. You can't use barrier effectively, since the enemies flash and take you for lots of damage anyway. You get Alice, the mayor's daughter, when you win. Go back and visit him, and she is there. 4-5. SKY PALACE Very tough sledding through here. You need to calculate and account for fixed fights. Each one can cost 3 barrier spells as you just run into enemies and whale on them. So this requires a lot of repetition and returning home. Emulator fans are excused here for cheating their levels up or retrying fights til they get the fewest enemies to fight. 4-5-1. ORIENTATION A very dense area with lots of enemy fights. The more levels you can get before here, the better. Try to plow through the mazes if possible. There are a lot of spikes you have to step over and fights you need to fight. But you should be able to get the armor without too much trouble. As in the cliffs, random encounters are very bad. Be sure you are level 20+ to make things easier. ??what items to buy? To enter this area, go south in the SE part of the village. 4-5-2. SMALL MAZE There are two fights to get here as you walk along the checkerboard. W N W and then N to the palace. This is a 4x4 map of rooms. The object is to get a spell power-up. Go E S E S E S. Enemies block your way right, but hack your way through them. Be sure you have 50 HP to cast teleport after getting the box and leaving. 4-5-3. MEDIUM MAZE Six fights to get here--one outside home, then go N E S W. This is a 6x6 map of rooms. The object is to get the barrier armor, which makes you nearly indestructible except if enemies flash. There is an ESP book S W W N N. I'm not sure what it does, but it is easier to get than the armor. Though on the other hand, you need to restart and retry if you go for this. You need to get past a lot of fights to get to the armor--they usually guard the way horizontally. There are 9 shifts back and forth with 90 spell points per barrier spell. With 6 spells outside, this gives you an idea how much you need to have to get through. IF there are only a couple enemies, you can ease up on the spell points. The patttern from the start is E E S E N N N W W N N W W W S E. ??metrics and detrails 4-5-4. LARGE MAZE This is a 8x8 map of rooms. It has a box and the final boss. You may want to be level 24+ for this. ?? There actually aren't so many forced fights here, but you do have knights, who are annoying. You don't really need to use any spells til you get to them, though. Once you do, you may wish to stop time. VERSIONS 1.0.0: sent to GameFAQs 3/18/2008, walkthrough complete but details still needed to be a "real faq" 7. CREDITS Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done. Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog, Lagoona, Da Hui and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his current not- yet-banned message board incarnation. I am not part of his gang, but I want him to be part of mine. Thanks to the NES Completion Project folks for keeping it going. Special thanks to odino for notifying me about this game. Thanks to Mute for translating this very fun game. Thanks to Romhacking.net for hosting the translation.
