INTRODUCTION There are a lot of versions of Lode Runner, but one I missed out on was the porting to the Famicom Disk System. That's probably in large part because I didn't really know what a FDS was until recently. SLR2 is just Super Lode Runner's engine with thirty different levels, much tougher on average than SLR. The AI is sort of dull(this doesn't make the puzzles dull--it just forces you not to rely on gimmicks,) but the digging puzzles are tough-- though a bit dumbed down from bigger versions. SLR2 is a good variation on Lode Runner where the enemies actually try to close in on you slowly, and it has some good original puzzles too. 2. CONTROLS First of all, if you are using a Famicom emulator, you need to know how to change the disk sides. On FCEUXD, push F8 F6 F8 when the screen says "Please set side B." Pushing diagonally causes the controller to move vertically if possible, then horizontally. You need to be exact in your horizontal movements catching a rope or you may fall just below it, too. A digs right. B digs left. If an enemy walks over your dig square, it fills up. You can fall on an enemy and walk over them. Enemies can do the same with each other, resulting in some odd tightrope acts. Enemies generally only have to fall in a bit to get caught and regenerate. Points are not hard to figure out. 0 for each enemy that falls in a pit. 10 for each enemy stuck. 200 for each gold pile. 3000 for an "S" gold pile--each level may have one, and you have to get it first for the bonus. In some cases, it may make the level impossible. 1000 for an enemy uncovered in a brick. You don't have to release them all, and some are not advisable. But you do get points. 10000 for not sticking any enemies. 20000 for not sticking any enemies. Enemies can carry gold, so you need to check up on them. If you run around a lot, they may release it, but otherwise you need to dig a hole for them. They always pick up any gold they run past, and releasing it is random. Enemies can only hold one gold at a time. You can keep track of how many gold pieces are left by 1) noting how many there were to start and 2) multiplying by 200, or adding 2800(+3000-200) if you plan to get the bonus, to see the score you need to advance to the next level. You can also memorize/write down the tens digit of your score in case you want to see if you are still eligible for a bonus. This assumes that if you've trapped ten enemies, you'll remember one. Although to be pedantic you can also remember if the hundreds digit was even/odd and then you need only remember one of twenty. 3. ENEMY AI/ABILITIES First, there's no standing under the ladder and pushing enemies up that works so well in other versions of Lode Runner. The enemies play dumb but safe. Enemies don't reverse unless they have an extra good reason too, which is a diplomatic way of saying they run into walls for lot of bad reasons. This is good for your survival. However, it is terrible if you want to collect the 10000 bonus. In most Lode Runners, if you dig from a dead end and fall, enemies fall after you. Here, they'll walk into a corner, which is bad news if you are trying to sucker them to the side. This just means you have to time any such dig, and it is better to goad enemies around. If an enemy runs into another, they readjust which way they want to go according to where you are. However, in general, enemies who just climbed up stairs go after you on the basis of if you are left or right of them instead of up or down. Enemies can't even see you above the stairs if you are walking on them. You can turn enemies around by digging a hole and dropping, because they will look for you again when they get out of the hole. Enemies you walk on can wobble back and forth, and you need to watch out for that, too. You need to be standing off on the next block about halfway when they are at the center of their block. You can afford to be up to one block to the side of any enemy. Enemies are slower than in most versions of Lode Runner. Dig 2 holes and the 2nd enemy that is just following you will get killed. Holes take about 5 1/2 seconds to fill up. Monsters take 20 seconds to regenerate, so you can really climb up and/or plan while they do. You can outrun an enemy and fall safely by walking on top of him, in the same direction. In general, you are twice as fast as they are. Also you'll want to be careful about running over an enemy you dug down. If you do so before he is in the hole fully, you'll fall on him and get killed. However, you will not fall into an enemy from above unless you specifically push down. Digging up two enemies in a row also only works if one is nearby. Enemies may look different through the levels, but they have the same AI. And they are all pretty cool. 01-05: red/white/blue hulks 06-10: gold blocks 11-15: cool 3 eyed red weirdos 16-20: orange/blue/white aliens 21-25: cyclops octopi 26-30: grayscale you 4. WALKTHROUGH Level 01: Go right and up the ladder. Fall right and go up the ladder with an enemy underneath. Then fall left when everyone is below you and climb UR for the bonus gold. Dig down for the gold below and go back up to the top. Clear that out and drop/dig down to the center past the cement. You can cut across the bottom now and get the gold in the dead end right of the center ladder. If an enemy follows you, you can dig the right edge and fall, then go back up. Collect the gold DR of the top and dig your way to the bottom. Now shake down the enemies for gold one by one so they are not killed, and then you can go to the UR and get the final two golds. The stairs will pop up, so you aren't trapped on the cement. Level 02: A laborious level where you need to drop enemies through the ringer the right way. Obviously you need to fall on each of the top golds, and you need to fall on the bottom golds somehow too. For starters, go over the right entombed guy, then dig right, walk a bit to his right, left, walk a bit to his left, etc. Get all the gold as you go down. Repeat mirrored for the other guy. Now you need to re-trap enemies in the top and let the right guy go R L R L R L and dig right when he falls, then dig and fall right. R R L R L R and fall, then R R R R and dig left when he falls, then fall. Mirror this for the left. For the rest of the golds, go to the top and fall down until you've got them all. They should be in plain view. You need to watch which way to dig and fall at the end, too. There's a possibility that enemies walking below can trap you. But you always have a way down. Also note that, as you go further along in the level, you can get pretty much anywhere from either hole at the top. Just remember to jump down early. You also may be better off killing enemies as they regenerate at the top--otherwise you have to wait in the UL/UR for a while as the enemies muddle their way up. Level 03: Very tricky for "just" a level 3. Go immediately left so the enemy UL does not trap you in. Get the gold in the UL and then go right for more gold, then back left and bring an enemy to the UL. Go up the upper left 2 stair and fall right when he is right behind you--almost touching you. Loop around and run across him, and you should just make it. Don't fall in the pit, of course. You can then loop back down and DL and R for a bunch of gold. Now you may have to fake the enemy on the right a bit with the ladders, but then the right is easy to clear out. Next you need to lure enemies over to the right to make sure they don't have gold. Then you can dig them up or get them to go left into the area with the golds on top of each other. If an enemy is on the right, dig him at the square between the two ladders, go L D R D L so he goes left, then go right as he climbs down the ladder. Go back to the DL and up the 2 2-stairs when you have two enemies trapped this way. Then the top one will get the suspended gold. Dig the enemies up so that you can get the entombed gold. H21* H3HX *$HX 2-1-wait 3 seconds-3-2-1 and get the gold and leave. You should then get the gold under the diggable block. You may have to trap the enemies again, but there's nothing technically tricky about this. You may also want to get an enemy or two to follow you so they will not trap you in the center area. Now you will need to get out. You need to go to the 1-stair and you can just loop the enemy around a bit. You need him to be touching you barely so that when you loop around, he goes right. But there is no risk as other enemies tend to keep away from you even if they pile up, and the enemy does not twitch back and forth. Level 04: 2-1 dig for the gold, then drop to above the enemy. Dig right and go right. Ride him into the wall. Now you can go up the stairs when you walk over him(run at him right away and he won't see you) and dig down the right before going to the top, digging and falling on the gold. You'll make it. Get the gold on the left. Then from the top 2-ladder, dig right, wait 2 seconds and dig right from the top, 1D, dig right, 1D, dig right and go left and dig right. Now loop over to the rope, dig left and 2-1 dig so you can fall on the gold. Go to the edge of the right rope. Dig left, drop, dig 2R of the enemy, then L of him and R. Walk over him and pull back left when you fall. 2-1-1 dig to get the entombed gold and the gold right of it. Now you need to go back to the UR, drop and dig L L R for the next-final gold. And after this, release two enemies. Go to the UR and fall right and dig the enemy out. Ride him for a bit, pull back right and dig him up. Go to the top and wait for him to follow you left. Turn D L D so he falls down into the entombed square. Dig up another enemy--either side of the pit, and wait-- and do the same for him. Dig right twice from the left, quickly, and go down and left. The enemies will run left, and the top one will get the gold. Dig them up and get the gold, then go up the center ladder and to the UR and level 5. Level 05: This is a messy looking level on the right, but it is not bad. Fall right and get the 3000 gold. Then dig the 3 squares at top and the one DL of the right ladder. Sweep D L U L and dig left at the left 2-ladder to get another gold. Dig left and right at the ladder base, drop, and dig both ways at the rope. Collect the gold and dig to get ti the 1-ladder. Get the golds, dig left and right, drop, dig right and go back up. Dig left at the top ladder, fall right and go back UL to the left ladder. The other gold is pretty easy. You already have one square dug. From the left ladder, dig right, go up, dig right, and get the gold and go R U and wait to go L U. Go across the rope, 1U, dig left, D, dig left and walk over the enemy to get the gold. Go UL but save the gold for the end. Then go right and dig over either suspended gold. They're on invisible blocks. On the left edge, dig right, go down and right, wait 4 seconds and climb up. Then dig the top, fall down and go back up. It would be nice to get the gold that seems free, but there are walls in the way. So go back right above the 2-ladder. This puzzle threw me for a loop because I over thought it. Though you can under-think it too. 01234H X56H7H 8H~9 Ha$Xb Dig 0-4. When 0 fills, dig 5-7. Go up top and dig 1-3, then dig 8 and 9. Go up to dig 5 and 6, then dig a, wait 2 seconds and dig b. Dig 8 and then drop down for the gold. Go left and up, then run across a and down at the rope to get out. Go to the UL and fall right on the enemy quickly and get to the ladder. Climb up it and go right--the monsters should congeal and push right. Climb over them to the right to get to the level ladder. Level 06: This level is more pedantic than anything else. Once you know where the false blocks are, a lot of the mystery evaporates, and if you keep on the top two ropes and don't get trapped, you're safe. The big nuisance here is knowing when you can swoop in for the last gold pieces. On the 2-rope, dig right then left and go to the left and dig some enemies. They will appear at the top and go down the only chute there. Stand on the 2- rope in the UR(note the safety valve below) and run over the enemies when they are waist-high. You should lean to the left. Drop on the airborne gold. Then go right on the rop and dig the block to get out. This is the first part--keep releasing enemies to bubble up to the DR--but the second is getting them to gobble all the gold and let you move on. You will want to try drop enemies so they take out the lower left stuff. This is done by hanging on the left edge of the brick platform. You'll also want to drop one enemy on the gold 3U of the 3-ladder. Let him get close on the right edge and drop when he is above the gold. You'll also want to drop two others 2L of you so they get the other gold you will have trouble reaching. Also, make sure that your enemies below are clear of gold, and the bottom is clear. You can do this by going left on the 2nd-top rope and counting gold left, then releasing enemies and dropping them in holes. You should probably at some point start to count the gold you have left. Not seeing the whole board is a real handicap, but you can track an enemy and see if he has gold pretty easily. After you've cleared most of the gold and gotten the stuff on top, count the gold and frisk your current enemies for gold. Then start counting down the number of gold pieces on the bottom. You can afford to run through the DL a bit on your final jump, but it is not viable at the start, as you get trapped. The level ladders allow you a way out. Level 07: An entertaining level with some timing to make sure you don't get crushed, but there's nothing too improbable. Go up the left and fall on the person's left shoulder. See who falls right-- at least one guy should, and you can wait for 2. 3-2-1 dig over the bonus gold. If one guy hogs the ladder, 3-2 dig and stay in the right edge, and he will go right. Go up the left ladder and, with an enemy near, dig left at the top of the head and fall in. Walk onto the enemy and dig right as you fall to get the left eye, then dig under it for gold. The right eye is easier--1U1R and 1R of it. Again you can wait on the shoulder for an enemy to fall. Go on top of the head and wait. An enemy will come on the rope. Walk on him and slowly walk to the right. Follow his lead and you'll get the gold on top. When you have track of all enemies, be sure to fall on the other suspended gold, then go to the UR. Now there may be several things you can do, and the order is important--2 should be after 1, or you have 1 more enemy to deal with. They are: 1) clear out the DR suspended gold(get 2 guys on the right) 2) clear out the gold by the semi-trapped enemy(make sure enemies are on the right, or will be--or one enemy is trapped as in 4) 3) mopup(basically, the right guy's left eye. Dig over it) 4) dump an enemy or two in the left guy--just let him follow and drop on the left of the center rope 1) Go to the UR again. With an enemy trailing(and make sure it is only one, or you'll be trapped,) dig 2R1U and 1R1U of the eye, then 1R of it and wait. Walk on the falling enemy, dig left and enter the eye. 2-1 dig so you can now 4-dig your way right of the arm and you can touch the ladder. Then: 123 45X X6$ X7X X$ Fall through for more gold. 2) from the right, get an enemy to come from the left. Fall when he is at the center. Fall on him and fall right to the suspended gold. Dig left when on the enemy and goad him left so he falls off. Dig left and over the gold and then fall in. The enemy below will go right. Level 08: Dig right to let the enemy over and walk half over him at all times so he gets ti the next pit, until he drops below. Then dig off: 123 45H 67H 1-5, wait for 1 to heal, 6-7 and the enemy will die. Get the gold, run across the enemy and go to the next bit. Dig right so the enemy falls off--let him under you, dig and go left. Then: X12 X345 67X ~8XX $9 Fall right through the false block below and go up the stairs. Get the gold and, if you need, loop again so you can wait 1R of the 1-ladder. When the cone is at the top of the ladder, about to move left, dig right and then go right and dig left, then go over him and onto the cement above. He will be stuck in the pit. Now to get him out--dig left and right, walk left, then when he walks left, walk right and dig left. Dig 1L of the gold and below. Now you need to walk on your enemies a lot. HX12X3 HX-4 5 Dig these to push the enemy 3R 1D. Then, 1H3 H 4 -2 X Dig 1-2 then go to the UR. Now for the last bit where you need to walk over the enemy to the right. Then you need to grab the gold--you may wish to dig 1-4, get the gold, and wait again. Then steer left when he goes right and dig... X12 34 Dig 1 to trap him, dig 2, then dig 3 when he gets up and sneak under. Then dig on the left side: H1 H2 HX3 H X4 Move down in for that. Now for the last bit. You can dig 1U1R and 1R of the gold. Then goad the enemy over and dig right at the 1-rope and go 2R U 2L, dig left and tap left so he falls. Jump on him and dig left/right. Then dig left/right again. You can shuffle on top of him and dig him out. This allows you to walk across the top with the ladders that appear. Level 09: More tricky stuff here. Get on the rope to the right, dig left, drop, dig right/left, drop, dig right/left andget the gold. Run across the rope and over the enemy to get the suspended gold. Let the enemy follow you closely as you dig your way into the top 2-wide next to the ladder. Dig left and let him sit. Then walk over him and get the gold. He himself has no gold, so leave him there. The next part in the UR is not bad. XX21 *$3X *X4$ X$5X 6XX 7H 8H 9H$$ aHcb eH*d Now drop for the two suspended golds as you go to the top of this structure. In the UL, dig R of the ladder top and 1R1D for that gold. Collect the very UL gold. Now for the mess inside. You can actually get in and out. Drop over the two golds when you can jump on an enemy, then go into he left edge. They will all lump together. Fly right to the edge then go 1U. Walk back left over the enemy, then U R and over the enemy bobbing up on the right. You can repeat this for the suspended gold, but be sure to fall and go bck up the stairs and hit the deck later. It's a bit trickier, but you don't have the right edge as you did before unless you are lucky, because you can't land on the bottom but a ladder. Now break down the left wall and bring two of them out. Get their gold. Then dig down the left wall again. Get the gold and loop over any enemy/enemies at the bottom, then run left on top of them for the final gold. You need at least one enemy trapped, but you can use the same trick as before--go to DR and climb over U 2L U 2R. You can also lure enemies back into the field of play by digging the right of the 2-wide, and if they fall in the DR, dig the top of the barrier. If enemies are stuck all in the bottom, dig down the left to get their gold. There's a lot of check-off work to be done here, but it's not impossible. Level 10: Get the gold at the top and dig all 3 squares on top of the first enemy. Dig left of him and go left, and when he goes left, go back right. He will fall left. Go to the top and wait. This is tough to evaluate because you need everyone to fill the top holes, which you can't quite see. Now you can dig 2 down on the right and when the top hole starts to fill, dig left to release the enemy. Then go to the top and dig the enemy. Repeat this all the way down til the last one. For this guy, you need to run across him when he regenerates, then go to the top. Now on the left you can dig enemies right left and right, falling over them. Kill them once you get to the bottom. You may wish to dig each way at the bottom set of pits, so you can work away from the enemy that falls below. Several of them will be there, and you just need to dig a bunch before working on the next guy. Once you are done, you can drop enemies in the holes at the top, or you can wait in the DL for them to come down. Then circle around to the UR where you started, fall left and go UL. There may be a problem if too many people are in the UR, but on the other hand, you don't have to eliminate every guy from your path. You can probably dig through one or two. And you probably only need one pass at the top rope to drop a few guys in. Level 11: A fun level that looks dreadfully impossible til you poke around a bit. ~ H1X5$ H2 X HX43~X H 67 8 To get the bonus gold, dig 1-2-3-4, then 8, then 6-7 Dig 1, wait, dig 2 then when 1 heals, dig 3-4. Dig 5 from the rope, get the gold and dig 6-7 for the gold below, then get out. Now you need to get by with a little help from an enemy. Dig 2L of the rope and stand half off the ladder to the left. Fall when he is near, then circle around and climb on him and go left. Dig left. It doesn't matter where you trap him, so just dig inside the structure to the right as you get the gold. Don't forget the UL one. Then go down the 1-ladder through the false block and dig right at the edge, fall, repeat and dig the 2 squares left of the ladder. Get the gold and then dig the 2 squares right of the ladder. Fall right and get everything and go UL. Dig left. Now stand on the enemy, dig left, go left and dig left. You'll want to do the digs a bit in advance or the enemy may turn back and leave you stuck. Keep digging left until you can get the enemy to fall left, then run across him to the DL. You may have an enemy on the left after he regenerates, but if not, go up the main ladder and dig left to release him. You will want to lure him into the 2-wide pit on the left. Dig right when he is about to fall, then stand on him a second and dig left. Fall left and go right when he pops up. Dig left and fall, and you'll just make it. The one-second pause is useful not to get him stuck, although if you goof, there's always releasing the guy you walked over. Let the enemy follow you up the chained 1-stairs and walk over him to the right. Dig right to get to the 3 gold, but detour 2D the ladder first and dig right and go back up so that you can get the golds, dig over the gold below, and hit the false block without getting stuck. Dig left inside the false block, fall left and dig right. Get that gold. You may want to get the gold on the ledge now. Stand on the 1-ladder above it and dig left. Do so with an enemy just behind, so he is not trapped. Then fall in for the gold. If the enemy falls in the 2-well, then you can dig him out and go R D but watch for the false block below the main ladder. For the last bit, you need to goad the enemy up the main stair. You need to walk across him as before, then dig the UR square that led to the 3 gold. Wait 2 seconds and go down the ladder 2 squares and up. That brings the enemy over without him getting stuck. Dig right to release the enemy left and then run left to catch the ladder. Dig down it and walk left over the looping enemy. Get the gold and now you can fall right when the enemy starts to climb back up. You may have to go left to the 2-pit and dig your way out, or you can run under to the right. But either way, you need to get in and out quickly, and the way out is not bad. Level 12: Getting enemies stuck in the center pit makes it hard to win the level, so you need to control when and where to drop them. For starters, left, wait and down so the enemy follows you down. Then dig for the bonus: X1 XX2 X$3X XX4X Get the enemy to come after you, go 4U 2R and dig, then go L D R so the enemy falls in the pit above. Leave him there. Get the gold in the top center by digging: H21XXX XH Bring the enemy at the bottom up now. Stand right of the 2-rope and go 1D when he is at the center, so he falls in. Go back up and 2-1 dig and go DR so he falls to the bottom of the area, then go quickly back UL. This will push the enemy right. H321 H4 Dig 1-3, wait for 1 to heal, and dig 4. Go back up and to the right. The enemy should now be in the UR. Dig the 4 squares on the right. Fall on the enemy and go right and dig, then keep digging right til he goes left. Then dig right, fall, etc. til you're at the bottom right. Dig right, get the gold and dig right. When the enemy falls in, go right and dig right. Now you can clean up some straggling gold. There are two of them right of the enemy you trapped at the beginning. Fall onto the gold steps(dig 1R of the 2- rope on the left) to get them, so you don't have to worry about that later. Dig over each gold at the bottom--false block over 1, 1 more dig over another. Fall into the left bit and clean out the 3 golds together, then dig left, fall for gold, dig left and get another gold and dig out. To break the monotony, dig the DL enemy out, then dig 1R of the ladder so he falls in, and go 2L2D2R so he falls back in the hole. Now release the enemy on top. Dig right to let him out. Work slowly right so you do not fall past him. When he hits the bottom, you need to dig left, go right to follow him, and left when he is 1/2-way right across a square. Dig right at the left edge, dig left when over him, and get the gold and dig out. That should finish it. Level 13: Unfortunately this level heaps an element of luck on top of the already considerable element of skill. So it is nasty that way. You want to make sure that, when you dig an enemy, he does not get trapped. So dig one hole where necessary, or if you must dig to get below, stand on the enemy and dig, or wait one second to dig behind. But in some cases, you may have to dig enemies out and cross your fingers they don't appear in the UL. Don't dig more than one of them. A good start is important here. Run left for the bonus gold, dig when the enemy is near, and go back right. Dig left while in the corner when the enemy comes back, then wait a second and dig behind yourself. Then fall below and dig: X H1 $~$2 X 3$H Go back up the stairs and go right--you want the enemy to turn back left and go down. Then go to the right and up, come down and go 2L, and dig right and fall left to a new gold. The enemy should get trapped and die. However, this might not happen. He also might appear in the UL and drop in the cement place, which means tough luck for you, too. So wait to see where he drops before saving the state. If you don't see him, restart. Now dig left as you go right below, so the DR enemy falls left. Dig left twice as you fall, then go left and dig left as you fall on the enemy again. Dig right, then dig left. He will fall to the corner. Stand on him and dig left and go left. Now when half-way left of the ladder, you need to dig left, then go back right and up quickly for the gold. Fall down and go left and dig the enemy and go beyond him. The key to all this is that you need to dig left so he keeps going left, but you have to hook back right and up. Unfortunately you probably need to keep this enemy alive like so. I've had him hide back in the DR. I don't quite know how to juggle two guys definitively, but a possible solution here is to go up the ladder and run right over the enemy you got your gold from, then dig to the right while walking on him before you run back left, but I haven't timed that yet. That traps one enemy back in the DL. Still, you can probably split one guy on each half of the remaining area. With the enemies off to the left, you will want to go upstairs and dig right, 1D, dig right for a gold. You should get the gold in the UL, then drop left of the hump where it looks like there is no way back. But there is. You can get an enemy to fall right off the 4-ladder and you can walk over him either way. Go to the left of the platform with the cement on the right and dig right, then dig right over the enemy and fall. Dig again and get the enemy's gold, then get the gold in the corner and dig again and circle L D R. Let the enemy fall on the rope and walk across him and dig right to get the suspended gold. You can sneak back D L. Let the enemies follow you into the dead end--well, only one needs to--and dig down and down to get the gold 1L1D of the enemy. You need enough time to get the gold and come back up. But now you have a problem of getting back to the right. The best solution is going to the top of the left ladder and digging right. By now you probably got any enemies' hidden gold, so get the gold in the cement pit. Now you want to dig an enemy up if you haven't. You need to stick one of them in the 1-pit next to the cement. So get the enemies killed and fall into the cement pit when one is near the 1-rope. He'll fall in. Walk over him and dig right. Walk over him as he falls then walk right up the stairs, then back left and up. Level 14: More annoying randomness. You need an enemy to fall into the pit in the left- center, so you can walk on him. Head to the ladder top. Wait for the enemy to get behind, then fall left and loop over him for your first gold. Climb on him and dig right to trap him, stand on him, dig left, then fall and dig left. Fall again and get the gold and dig left over the 1-rope. Now you are in the second part. Dig once to get the enemy--don't trap him, as you need him--and go to the top, fall right and loop over the enemy. If two enemies have appeared, kill both(2 digs in a row should do it) and continue as before. You only want to deal with one enemy. When the enemy falls, go up and right. For some reason, he goes right, and you can use that to snatch the gold on the right. Fall on him when he comes back at you. Go to the top again and loop to the left this time. Fall left quickly til you are over the suspended 1-gold, then 1R and dig right. Loop over the enemy again, but this time: 1 342 5H 6 Dig 1, fall, go right and dig 2 and let the enemy fall. Then 3-4-5-6 gets you to the next bit. Wait to see if an enemy regenerated in the left-center. If so, keep going. If not, restart. Dig so you fall on the enemy--when he is in the center facing right works well. Now you have to dig 1H 2H 3 H X45H $67H *X XXX Dig 6/7 when the enemy hits the right, then go down and 1/2 left and dig 8. Timing is needed so the enemy keeps going left--you should go left when the enemy is right under you. Get the gold to the left and then dig your way out. Again you need an enemy to drop into either the center-left or left, because he needs to get the gold sitting on the right of the big V. After this you can go to the UL and mess around. Level 15: This first bit needs to be done very quickly, and completely, or you can't get the gold later. Wait, walk right over the enemy, dig right, fall, 1R, dig left, fall for the gold, fall on the guy, dig right and get the final suspended gold. Walk right over your enemy. Up the big ladder. Get on the 1-rope to the right and wait. Go right to walk on the enemy, dig right twice while on him, and fall on the 3 suspended gold in a row. You can fall back on him or dig or go 1R, dig left, 2L, dig right and get the gold. Either way, you need to have an intuitive grasp of the timing. Get back to the top with the enemy following you. Fall right off the 1-square with him close behind, so he follows. You can get all the gold on the way down here. Loop around him and go left on top of him and dig left. Goad him off to the left, get the suspended gold at the top, and dig right when on him. Tap right so he falls right, then fall right. Tap right so he falls right, then dig left on him and fall left. The next bit requires a lot of timing. So if you are emulating, you should use save states. Stand on the right edge of the 1-rope in the very right and fall when he is near. 1L 1U and right when he is 1/2 square above the ground. Now he goes right. You will just make it to the ladder across. Take out the bottom part first. $12 X$3 4 Dig 1-2, wait, dig 3-4, then from the rope, dig 1 and get the golds. Level 16: Getting the special gold is a good way to start--drop on it when above it with the enemy 1L of you, then run left when he is 1/2 square below. That gets you to the UL. Dig 1-2. Wait for 1 to heal then 3-4-5-6, then dig over the gold and retrieve everything. You need to work around the traps. 1 2~ 3 4 56vX Dig 2-1 above the right gold in the pit(4R of the guy you walked over) and then you will fall through to get it. Then fall left of it and fall left of the entombed enemy. Now tackle the DL. This is interesting because you need to establish a way back to the main part--the only real way to go about that is to dig up two guys and drop them on the left edge. Person 1 is 1R1D of the 1-stair. Get the 2 gold to the left, then dig him up and dig 3L, 2L and L of the stair. Lean left and walk over the enemy, then go back right. Repeat this with the enemy 3D of the stair, though the timing is a bit different. You have a lot of margin for error, but I suggest you stay by the left and start digging right when the enemy is at the top. Drop him in as before. Now you can drop over the enemies and come back. The gold 1U of he guy in the center pit is not bad--walk on one and 2-1 dig over the other. Also, get the gold in the DR, which is not tricky. 1-6. 1H2 3 4 XH5 XH6$ Now there is gold in the UR. Dig U and UR of the entombed enemy so he falls, then dig R when on top of him. Dig R to let him out. He will not go anywhere. You now have to trap him, and when you do, make it back to the top quickly. He may land anywhere, but you need him to reappear in the UR, run across him and get the gold. That makes ladders appear, which is not quite enough. You need to go up that UR one in space. Let the enemies lump together--go to the top for this and be sure to outflank anyone chasing you. Then get them both running in unison and dig right in the UR and get out when they are following you on the top. When you return, you can walk over them. Level 17: This level is not bad at all. You need to dig 3 left to kill the enemy, and then you can dig: 12X XX3XX XX$XH XH XH 4X X56 XX$ XXX XX Get the bonus gold, go left over the enemy, dig 4, fall left when he is under you and dig right, then dig 6 and get the gold. Take care of the other suspended gold next. At the top, go left of the 2-ladder, dig right with an enemy following, and go back right and down the 4-ladder. The enemy will fall. Fall on top of him- -no timing needed--and lean left over him twice. Dig right and fall right and you will get the gold. He will turn left, so you are not at risk. Now you can dig the enemy into submission. The next two golds are not bad. H 12 H35X H4$* H X Dig 1,2, wait 2 seconds and dig 3, then dig 1,2 right away. By the ropes, wait for him to come back right from the left edge a square, then dig left, 2R, dig left. Fall on him and go back left. Get on the ladder. Then go left over him and dig left. You need him to fall left, and you need to fall left over him and collect the gold nearby. It is tricky, so use emulator save states a lot, but try to keep 1/2 pace ahead of him and be prepared to swerve. You need to go to the left edge then back right. Get the UR now. H4321$X XXH765$ XXXX Dig 1-4 and get gold. Dig 1-4 then wait 2 seconds, 5-7, 4, 3 and get the other gold. You can dig right of him 4x to release him now. Get the gold in the bottom of the UR, then dig: 1 2 3 4X5H 6 H The enemy will reappear by the next ladder. Dig him out from above, get the gold over the cement with him following, and dig: XX2H XXHX1 H3 X Dig 1 when he is near, then 2-3-get the gold--fall on him and to the right. Dig L 2L 3L of the gold, then dig H21 H43 5H 6 1-2, wait 4 seconds, 3-4-1-2, wait 3 seconds, 5-4-3-2-1, wait 2 seconds, 6 and the enemy goes to the DR. You should retreat to the UL ladder, then after you go halfway off the bottom ladder rung(he gets the gold) dig him out again--no need to be subtle, go 1-6--and move to the left where you can dig left and he will lead you to the DL. Walk over him and dig him out. Go to the UL and dig him, then go back DR across the rope and dig left. He does not give you his gold in the UL as a level stair is there. Now go to the top of the big ladder and drop right so he follows. Fall on him and get the gold. Dig 3L 2L L and hang over the edge. If he goes right, fall on him and get the suspended gold. If not, wait and try again. Dig the enemy in the UL again and go 4R 3D. He will drop left of you. Dig 1U1R and 1L of him, then go right. He'll fall in the corner and get the gold. Use the 2-ladder to dig him out. Get his final gold. Let him follow you up the left and now you can circle around so he drops into the 1-pit. You can dig him up through the UR as you did before. Or you can just kill him and camp out on the top. Hang off the right of the 1-ladder at the top and walk over him to the next level. He will fall in the hole ahead of the UR ladder. Level 20: Why not pick up the gold to the left on the first platform first--you could get the bonus, but it is just a nuisance to sort things out. To lure enemies over, go to the top. You may wish to do so to get to the left, then lure them back left. It's useful to know there are no other gold pieces in play for later. The compartments are tricky to get into, and you want to bring 1 enemy into each. Dig the UL square, 1D of that after a 5 second wait, then slip over and dig 2R of the UL. An enemy will come in. Stand on him and dig to get out. Obviously, without good timing, you are trapped. Remember you have about 6 seconds, and if nobody takes your bait, pass. The timing is as follows: for the top, dig when an enemy falls by the middle of the platforms. For the middle, when some guy runs at you and falls. You need to reset if the enemies don't come right at you. The last part requires perfect timing. You also need not to be disrupted by anyone else coming over, which is a bit chancy. Have only one enemy left. Go to the top. Dig left, the square 2R from the top. Step on the enemy when he falls in, dig left, and go to 3U of the bottom. Wait 1 second after he falls in to the 2nd hole, then dig right, go 1D, and dig right when the enemy is bisected by the top of the second platform. Go U 2R dig R. Wait for the enemy to enter and run over him. Running back should not be too taxing. You have one less guy to fight. You may need to shake the enemies down for gold, but again, they are less numerous. You can just lure them right and dig them up and go to the top. Level 21: Drop down and go along the right. Goad the ey4eball towards you and zigzag up. Wait at the bottom of the 4-ladder and wait for the eye to come after you. Walk over it for the suspended gold under the brick--you can probably get the gold to the right beforehand. Then fall over the fake brick to the right for another gold. Go to the top of the 4-ladder and fall left and go in a circle so the enemy goes to the left--run over him while looping on the ladder and he'll eventually go left. Go up the ladder and right on the rope, then run across the enemy as he climbs up the rope to get the gold on the cement. Get on the top rung of the 4-ladder again and fall right when the enemy climbs up the 1-ladder 2R of this. Run across the top 2-rope and wait to go right, then hang off the right of the 1-rope and walk over the enemy again. Walk back and you can maneuver to dig the enemy here. Fall down on the left of the 2-rope to get the tough suspended gold. You will want to dig between the 1-ropes on the bottom to catch the enemy. Then go to the DR 1-ladder. You will make the enemy fall to the bottom. Wait for both of them to, actually. Now you can clear most of the golds. For the one above the 3-gold on the bottom, dig above it then run over the eyeball as it runs right. For the one in the DR, dig the bottom block when the enemies are about to walk into it. Then go to the right edge (U-R-D, but there is no rush) and fall onto the gold when the enemy is about to go in the corner. Walk over him to the ladder. Then stand on the entombed eye, dig left and fall on him and go right for the final gold. Now lure this guy to the bottom left pit and wawlk over him back left, and you can climb to the top, then R and U. Level 22: Pretty straightforward except for what seems to be some luck. Go quickly to the right and get the line of gold. Oops--invisible barrier. Then wait for the enemy to fall down the shaft next to the center ladders. Fall on him and get the 3 gold on the other side. Dig and fall right. Go back above the chute of fake bricks and jump on the enemy and hold dig-right down. Go right when there's all that gold. Go to the top and jump on him again. Dig right at the bottom. Run over him to the ladder. He'll go right and left. Dig left when he is 1L of the other ladder in your area, going right. Stand at the top of the ladder for him to regenerate. That makes him go right. When he is at the top single rope, dig-R D dig-R and 1U. When he goes left at you, go 2 1/2 down and he will fall into the pit. Now dig 1R of the ladder top, 1D of that and wait, then 1D of that. 2U1L of the enemy and get the gold. Dig left and right over the enemy and run left. Make sure you don't fall ahead of him in the gap, but you want to fall onto the chute square and go hard left to make it out. Now destroy him as before and go to the top of the ladder and right. Walk over him after he goes left at you this time. Back in the center, get the gold on the ledge. In the UL, fall on the 2nd-left gold. Get the gold left of it, then the 2 right of it. Timing move ahead. Dig R L at the center ladder base to release the eyeball. Go left and dig right when the falling eyeball is 1/2 below the stationary eyeball, to release them both. Get the gold and dig right and fall right. The eyeballs seem to move randomly at the bottom, but you need them to both go left with one on top of the other, ahead of it. Walk on that eyeball and when you get the second gold, wait and drop. The bottom eyeball will run back right. Run over it to the new ladder and up the center. Level 23: This is an odd and satisfying little level where you need to work your way down and step on your enemies a lot. Start by digging L and going 4L D. Wait for the enemy to fall. Go to the first structure. $1234 *X6H5$ < get the $ before you dig 6 X$7XXX X8XXXX < wrong square, you fall Get on the next big ladder, get the gold, and dig 51H 2H $3H ~4H 1-3, wait for 1 to heal, 4, then 5. Run to the final structure. $23X1 XXX$X XXXXX $~~~X X X 1, wait 4 seconds, 2-3, 4, get the gold, 5, 6-7 and dig the enemy out, then go to the bottom of your ladder, halfway off. Tap up and right to make sure you won't fall into the enemy as he goes right. Run right over him, getting the suspended gold, and keep running right til he goes down the chute. Run across the enemy in the pit, then 2R of him, dig left to let him out. UR and fall for 2 gold, dig to get to the rope, dig left and run across the enemy as he goes left. Get on the ladder, run over the top enemy, and get the gold above him. Dig him into the pit below. Fall on the lower enemy when he is going left, 1 1/2 blocks away from the bottom. Dig the 2nd-right of 4 blocks. Run ULU for the gold, then run back right over the enemy to get to one rope. R U L quickly to run over him to get further above. Go to the top rope, dig left, get the gold and get out. Now go to the 2-wide rope and when the enemies in the pit are going right and the rear one is in the center, drop down. Dig left. Then dig the 3 squares right and go up the ladder. When the enemy gets out of his pit and inches left, run right across him, up and left. If all works well, an enemy will be in the DL and you are on the upper ropes. You can then dig from the 1-ladder on the left onto the gold, then dig left in the 2x1 to fall on an enemy, get the final gold, and go U, R, UR. Level 24: Not a bad level at all. You can get the 10000 here pretty easily and maybe, if you are tenacious, the 20000. The 3000 bonus doesn't look worth it. You basically just need to dig a hole in the bottom of the L to bounce off the octopus there. But it's an annoying detour. You have lots of easy gold to pick up and it's really more of a hassle to get the octopus in the right place than anything. Drop left, dig right and dig 1L and 1L1D of the rope to start. Fall in. Cycle to the top and dig over the suspended gold. Lure the octopus up if needed and get the gold in the DL, left of the entombed ones. Fall left off the platform where the octopus is oscillating, then lead it to the top once it falls. Dig left at the stair to the top, then go up and 2-1 dig left-ways. The octopus will bounce back and forth, and you can fall on it and collect the gold. Let's get the entombed golds now. 132XXXX 5$4$X$ XXXXXXX Dig 1 then 2 as the octopus is on the left end of the rope. Drop down for the gold and 1L. When the octopus is above you, dig. Fall right and go R U to stick the octopus. Dig over the right gold and get it. Return. Dig 1-3-2-4-5-6 and go DL into the corner. Then walk in for the gold and dig your way out. Go back over the octopus and to the top. 1R, then fall right when it sees you. Dig left at the right edge of the pit when it's near, let it fall, wait a second, stand on it, dig right, fall, dig right, then dig left on the rope. You can now return and walk over the octopus. There's nothing esoteric in the rest of the level. Just dig up the DR octopus when it's in the middle, and you'll be okay. The only mildly tricky gold is here: HXX21XX $HX3$XX XH$X4$X 1-2-3-4. Dig over the two golds on top of each other, then take out the rightmost golds next time. The 3x3 chamber is there any time you want it. Dig 2U and 3U of the gold on the left. The ladder appears in the UR. Level 25: There are several ways to do things, but it turns out the most obvious one works out best. With a few wrinkles, of course. First thing is to get the bonus gold. XH21 $ 3H 4XH XH
Dig 1-2 when the enemy below is at the center, going right. Dig 3 when he is
at the right end after one bounce back/forth, then 2 and 1. Drop on him, get
the gold, and run out. Wait for 3 to form if need be.
Now dig the guy to the left. Use 1-2, 3-1-2, 4-3-1-2 as before. You can just
dig 4 right away. The important thing is to get the guy in the left. Then, 1-
2-3-1-2 and get the gold. You will have plenty of time to do so.
The big sweeping move is up next. Let's map it out for clarity.

What is going on here, then? The first 3 digs are straightforward. Then dig
4/5, fall left, and dig 6 to trap the enemy. Wait as long as you can to dig
6. Then stand on him, dig 7, then 8-9. a-c, drop, d-e and then circle through
9-8 to fall on the gold.
dig down the left of the structure for the rest of thins. Do so quickly, as
an enemy will follow you into the chamber to the right. Nothing complex here-
-dig, get gold to the left, go to the ladder, and dig each way at the bottom.
Loop around on the ladder with the enemy til he goes right. Then run over
him, get the gold, and dig left so he can fall and reach you.
Greet him at the right ladder and dig him for his gold. Then go left and up
the ladder. Walk over him. Note if another enemy is in the way, it is a bit
trickier, but it should not be too complicated. In fact, if you have 2
enemies, you can try your luck that one and only one will be killed(dig 3
holes, or 1 hole far away from another) and if the enemy is in the UR, you
don't have to release another one later.
You can get the gold to the right of you want, but what you really need is an
enemy to walk over--if he's there, use him to get the upper right golds. If
not, release the enemy in the middle. Dig in there, fall for the gold, dig
left on him, lean left, get the gold after he falls, and dig him out the same
way you dug the other guys out.
If the enemy appears from above, go 1R1D of the 1-ladder, dig and go 2L U R U
and lean left. Then run over the enemy to the top. If no enemy appears from
above, dig into the structure.

Dig 1-2, climb on the enemy that is DL of 2, dig right and run right on the
enemy and quickly left to get the one gold. Then for the other, dig as above-
-no timing is necessary. Getting out is not trivial, but staying on the 2-
rope or the leftmost 1-ladder will psyche the enemies out enough for the path
UR to be free.
Level 26:
Some tricky moves here but nothing too profound. Go to the UR and 2-1 dig,
dropping 1L of the entombed enemy. Dig under him and fall for the special
gold, then come back and dig the UR corner for another. The left is next,
since it is very dangerous to clear with enemies wandering around.
You need to have killed an enemy. Stay at the top row. Dig left when he is
about to fall off. Then get on the rope, dig right, drop left and dig right
at the first chance. Get the three gold and get out. Dig left at the edge and
fall through the chute square, then 2-1 dig, avoiding the enemy by falling
in. Dig 1L 1R 1R1D of the ladder, get the stuff at the bottom, and fake out
the enemy, if needed, to go back up.
The right is trickier. Dig from the right, on the two squares right of the
ladder tops. Drop in, and when the enemy drops next to you, run over him and
dig right and walk in. Then walk over the enemy when he falls and go back
right.
This next part is thorny. Dig right, drop down, wait 3 seconds and dig right.
The enemy below should get trapped. Dig right and swoop in for the gold.
Return, dig left and drop in. On the 1-ladder, wait for the enemy to line up
with you, dig left, 1D, dig left. Run right as the enemy does. Get the gold,
go back left, and when he's under, run right. Dig right at the end and fall
in. The enemy will be safe and stuck.
Go to the center and up. You need an enemy to drop on, as before, for the
last gold. Go 1L1D of the gold, dig, and when the enemy is all the way up,
walk right for the gold. The ladders that appear are handy--run to the
center, up and right, then dig right and go up the right side.
Level 27:
A cruel level in some places but very elegant really. 1R, dig left and floor
it right. Dig right on the ladder and hang off the right half of the UR rope.
The enemy will fall. Fall on him and then dlg left as you go down. Fall left,
dig right, cut left and go back right. Drop off the rope. If you do it right,
2 guys will be in pits, and you will be in the DR.

1-2, wait 5 seconds for 1 to pop up, dig 3-1-2. Wait 4 seconds at 4, then 3-
2-1. Wait 3 seconds at 5, 4-3-1 (Times are not perfect.) Get the gold and run
out to the left.
Dig 1L of the bottom trapped guy. Go up the big ladder, then on the 2-ladder,
dig left and right, fall right and walk left to push the enemy into the pit.
Go to the DL and release the other guy to the right. Do so digging left when
1U2R. Drop, 1R, dig left, 1L, dig left, fall and go 1 1/2 right. He will fall
right after you into the pit where the other guy was.
Release him as before and move him across as you did the other guy. Only this
time when you run left over him, go up the ladder, L D and to the 1-rope. Dig
left on it, fall, dig left and walk over him. Sucker him up the left side and
walk over him. Drop down on the rope and push right and dig the right square
of the 3-island. Here's where it gets sticky.
Fall left--you have a safety valve digging right. Then get the two guys below
you. Do the same as before, though start at the top of your ladder, swoop
down and then circle counterclockwise--1 will get stuck, but that's going to
be good for you later. He will reappear where you need him to, if you wait.
Dig the enemy out, go to the DL and up and along the ropes. Drop on him and
go right...and his pal is now a bridge for you! I think you need to be above
the 1-ladders for this to work, but it usually works ok for me.
And once it does, the rest is (relatively) easy. Go across, dig R and R-D of
the ladder, go up the right edge, dig left at the 2nd-top rung(hidden block)
and go back 2R of where you started. Dig left and go up the stair to the
right. Lead off to the left and walk left over the enemy.
Level 28:
Lots of small tricks but no big headache. Dig right at the rope, 2D, dig
left, 1U, wait 4 seconds, dig right, D L D L, dig right and work down for the
gold. L U R and, 1R2U of the suspended gold, dig left. Now go to the top and
dig right to get the gold over the chute.
Dig the enemy out from the left, fall on him(do so when he is 1/2 on the
chute square, or you may not be able to move right over him,) go right and
dig ahead of him. Go up the ladder, 2R and dig left. Get his gold and go 1U
and wait for him to go out to go 1L.
Let's clear out the DR now. The first gold is easy--1L, wait, 1L1D, then drop
in. Once you have that one, dig 2R and 1R of the ladder base, walk in and
walk out.
You can fake out the enemy by bringing him to the right, then digging right
of the ladder:

ladder. Keep level, then swerve down so you can get the enemy to take out the
gold in the cave. Get him below. You may also just be able to dig up the

Then go up and walk over the enemy that appears there. The enemy will die--go
to the UR and see where he turns up. If he turns up in the UL, you can

next bit is the trickiest. Assume the enemy's not there for now. Then

1-4, wait for 1 to heal, 5, 1-2-3-4, 6 and run clockwise for the two gold.
The enemy must be handled differently. Dig 1-4, then 5, then loop around the
A and go to the bottom. He will be trapped in the bottom. Proceed as when you
got the gold, but dig below 6. The enemy should be trapped, and if not, dig
him out to get his treasure.
The UL is not hard.

5-1-2, when 5 heals, 3-4, then 5 and get thegold and get out. That leaves the
nasty gold on the left. Sucker an enemy left and run over him. But it's not
so easy! You need to be at the very top of the ladder. Go a bit above it,
then tap right and make sure you shift right. Then when the guy walks below
you, drop on him. Walk on him when he drops down running at you, and take the
UL ladder to the next level.
Level 29:
You need to take out the starting structure quickly. Move right when your
foot is in an enemy below. Fall back onto the enemies and into the right
niche again, then fall left and walk right on top of them. Get all the gold
there. Now you don't have much gold, but the extra cement blocks you.
The monsters can beat you by volume here, but the main tricks you need to
know are to back up to the right as you dig holes--if running out of space,
note you should be 6-7 squares away when you dig so enemies die--then dig
holes behind you for enemies to go off to the left on the bottom, as you go
up the right stairs. You may have some times where things don't work out and
you need evasive action, so you may need to drop from the top rope, dig some
enemies up and try again.
You need two sorties down the left of the structure and one down the right.
Then you need to dig your way through your enemies in order to get to the
ladder in the UR, which doesn't go off the screen but goes high enough. Be
patient and try for as much ground as you can, going far right and backing
up. You won't kill everyone. But often the trailers will get blocked up and
you can deal with the men in front later.
For clearing the entombed gold, on the right you just dig 2L and 1L of the
stairs, go down and repeat. For the left, 2R and R of the stairs--note
landing on the structure sends enemy through the block more quickly. For the
right, symmetrically, but dig 1 at the last. You may have enemies chase you--
if so, take action early, run to the bottom, and dig behind them. It can get
tricky having enemies from both sides, but always run away from the majority.
For the center gold, dig 5 to the right 5 times, then 4-3-2-1 on the right,
then through.
Level 30:
Lower left:
You need to get the cornered gold and walk out to the upper right, since
there's a false brick to the left.

If we get rid of 1/2/4 we see we must

And we just make it out in time! Similar puzzles with 1/2/4 missing show the
same sort of solution is necessary.
Now I haven't gotten the puzzle solution to work but suspect it is a matter
of timing.
1. Dig 1, then 0, from the ladder
2. dig 2, 3 going right, 1, 0 at ladder top
3. dig 4, 2, zigzagging from the left ladder up, then dig 3 and 1 from the
right
4. dig 5 and 6 just before 4 reappears. Wait a second, then dig 4, 3, 1.
Wasting even a fraction of a square move re-digging 4/3/1 is fatal, so
telegraph your moves.
5. dig 7 then 5 then 6 then 3, in one motion, though you can maybe wait a
half-second after digging 7. You need to run left, dig 5/6, and run back
quickly. With 3, go NE and gold the left dig.
6. Go down. Hold DL and dig right onto 8, then get the chest and exit NE.
Fall left for another gold.

0x80 = # of lives(turn OFF while loading game)
0x25 = level #
There is a small problem with this. The FDS reads in about 10 levels at a
time, so you need to pass through levels 5, 10, etc., or it will loop with
old levels if you swap in the middle of a level. Each time you change a level
band, different monsters appear, too. I don't have things down exactly. But
if you go to the level select at the start of the game, you can change to
whatever you'd like.
0x521 = monster # 1(you can have several)
byte 0 = direction (C5 = falling C1 = up C2 = down C4 = right C3 = left C0 =
stuck)
byte 1/2 = horizontal icons from right and # of pixels from right
byte 3/4 = vertical icons from above and # of pixels from above
