Deep Dungeon 2(FDS) FAQ/Walkthrough version 1.0.0 by schultw.andrez@sbcglobal.net Please do not reproduce this FAQ for profit without my prior consent. If you write a polite e-mail to me referring to me(and this FAQ) by name, then I will probably say OK. But if I ignore you that means no--and I am bad about answering e-mail. Sorry. This document is intended to work in concert with my GameFAQs maps. You probably found both of them there, anyway. This document is also in **ShiftJis**, so some of the text, especially in the item and enemy sections, will not make sense if you cannot read it. I have tried to keep the document English-ified enough so even someone with the original rom who has no knowledge of Japanese(like me, except I had some translations) can get through the game. As such I'm interested what other people might find unclear about my guide--very likely I internalized some heuristics I forgot to write out. Fortunately the game is largely a maze-crawler, so that part is language-neutral. Thanks to odino for sending me his translation work and pointing out a lot of specifics which made writing this FAQ a lot less harrying. Thanks to Last Cetra for his review, and for the nice DD1 guide. Thanks to KingMike for all the Deep Dungeon work he is undertaking. ================================ OUTLINE 1. INTRODUCTION 2. THE SHORT-THROUGH 5. CHEATS 6. VERSIONS/CREDITS ================================ 1. INTRODUCTION Deep Dungeon II(DD2) is really functionally the same game as DD1, with one character hacking his way through a maze in 3-d perspective. A big difference is that you have a tower and dungeon, and not just a dungeon, to explore. You still have 8 32x32 levels to explore, but there are a few more items to find and things to do. There was enough to mix me up for a while, and while real- time combats get annoying, the game has nice features such as clearing a level of a dungeon once you get past a certain character level. While it may be tough to figure how to start out, there are ways to get a lot better quickly, which means this game really isn't too bad to plow through. Level building doesn't seem to be at a premium til you face the final boss, as the emphasis is more on finding items. But that is what a FAQ is for. So let's get rolling. 2. CONTROLS The game works in real time, so if you pause, it may throw a random encounter at you. To prevent this, push B during regular play and an arrow will appear beside the menu. You can push B again to get out of the menu. While fake- browsing the menu, you can plan out your trip with a map. Up sends you forward and left/right/down rotate you. (A) button chooses a menu item, or, if the menu is not active, goes through a door. Up does not do this. This is annoying but a fact of the game you'll have to deal with. It is tough to move seamlessly between entering doors and moving around, but with some practice, you'll get it. Yes/no menu items have yes first. Push (B) to exit them, up/down to choose, and (A) to select. Examples of this are stairs or, more intricately, if you find an item and are asked to drop something else. Save your gamestate before doing this and look in the RAM to make sure you aren't dropping something critical. You are usually able to recover even a special item, but why risk it? The menu is there throughout the game, but different options are valid at different times. 1 = fight, only valid in combat 2 = use item. Some items are used in noncombat, some in combat. No penalty for trying to use an unusable item. Using also doubles as equipping. You cannot explicitly un-equip an item, though you can equip another item of similar type(weapon, armor, shield.) 3 = search. Re-displays clues on special squares, or searches for treasure. 4 = talk. Some NPCs who don't fight you may talk. 5 = see stats. This also freezes the game and shows what you need to make the next level. 6 = flee. Only valid during combat. This game is a bit slow, so if you are using an emulator, find the speedup key and use it--at least until you visit the lower levels of the dungeon where you won't want to be attacked all the time. The game loads when you change each level pair, so be prepared to speed things up temporarily. If you have trouble remembering which item does what, just remember the first character and/or the length. 3. STATISTICS 3-1. WALKTHROUGH Most important things to remember--item buildup is better than level buildup. Save after each big item. Remember where the healing statues are. And save before using the feather. 4-1. LEVEL 1, THIEF BOSS Level 1 is pretty straightforward. You should buy the axe, weapon #3(option 2, then 1, then 3) at Dorl, and then equip it(option 2, then the item below the 0's.) That will raise your attack power. You should be able to defeat all enemies here with one blow, making the rest of this a glorified reconaissance mission. Improve your attack points when you get a level. You will eventually get enough armor class, which, in the tradition of old school games that miss the mark in a really neat way, makes you harder to hit. Oh, and heal after getting each level, to get your HP up to maximum. Your biggest stated object is to get gold. The experience will fall out from random combats in your travels. Now while it is possible to sneak up to level 2, get nicer gold, and come back down, there's the rsk of an encounter where enemies can wipe you out with one blow. So don't go up there. There are various treasure rooms that refill their treasure each time you visit, and you can and should go there. Rooms refill when you visit Dorl, or if you switch between the tower and dungeon, or between levels 2 and 3 of either. The best treasure room is right next to the entrance. The best place to start getting treasure is, from Dorl, 2E, through the door, 1N to the stairs(don't take them down. The dungeon is far too tough. Tackle the tower first.) then 1W, N through the door, 2E and N through the door. This room has three treasure chests. Use option 3 to take the chest, or if you hit 1 by mistake, use option 3 twice. Each chest gives a random 1-16 gold reward. In other words, a treasure chest has on average 8.5 gold. There's another room. Exit, go east and 2N and enter that one for three more. You can keep the rally going by exiting, though you will have to go through fixed fights, which contain a small risk of the monster attacking you first. 1S 2E 1S and through 2 doors, then through the east door. Go 3 north, then east through the door, S 4E 2N and 2W getting two treasure chests. 2E 2S 2E N and through the door. There are three treasure chests behind the fight. Exit the room, 2N E through the door and after the next fight, exit the NE. W down the hallway and N and gather all the gold. Now you can retreat back home if you want and repeat. I could 18 gold here which totals to an expected haul of 153 gold. Monsters tend to appear pretty quickly until you get to level 4, and then they only appear on specific squares, which reload when you return to Dorl. So it is your choice whether you just want to stay in one place, speed up the emulator, and get to level 4 before walking around, or you want to pick up levels as you find gold. You don't necessarily need to get much more protection to win, and it's your choice whether to save for a shield or armor next. The shield is cheaper, but you find its ultimate replacement sooner. You can, of course, just pile up the best shield and armor before going on, but you don't really need to. If you want a bit of gold, there are places to loot. The best way to do things is to pick up gold in the flow of the game. For this, you can heal yourself(option 1 twice in Dorl) and then you can go up the stairs nearby. There are five chests in the room, each with a lot of loot. You should get about 80 gold(randomly 1-32 gold) for each run through. If you are at level 4, you can probably handle any random encounters. You can get to 500 gold to buy item #4 in the armor store(option 2, option 2,) which is the best shield, and then to 700 if you want to buy item #8 in the shop, the best armor. But you will probably get there in the natural flow of events, and there are better items you'll find along the way, so there's no need for stockpiling. But it is nice to know about. So after you get to level 3, you can return to Dorl and go up the stairs again and repeat. You can get up to level 6 that way pretty easily, since after that, the second floor doesn't give random encounters. Or you can find treasure on level 1, or you can proceed to beat the thief boss, which unlocks the door to level 2. But wait! You've been to level 2! What am I talking about? Those stairs in the SW(and the NE and SE, if you look around) lead to dead ends with information. They are nice to note and have some advice which parallels what is in this walkthrough, but they are technically not critical to the game. At level 3, you can probably beat the boss, but if you want to go treasure hunting, here's how to do that. You can take out the lower part as noted above, but there is good treasure along the way to the thief boss. Once you beat him, the stairs to the next level are open for good. From Dorl, go straight east, through the first door. Detour here--go east for a clue about where to find the hand mirror. Or you can go straight north, turning east before the wall and going 2E, then north through the door, west and north through the door. West and north through the west door, then south and west through the door, leads to more treasure in each of the side rooms in the hallway, with some fights too. There are 14 chests here. ($119) Going east from the north-facing door, you turn north and the door on the left is locked til you beat the thief. Go through the door on the right and each door on the left holds treasure--12 chests in all. ($102) You can go through the door in front of you and through the hall. The thief is in the far corner. He is no tougher than the other monsters. Once you dispose of him, go back two doors. You can go east(right) and north and right at the second door. There's a fight, and then you can search for the hand mirror(B, option 3) 2 squares south of that. You're probably good enough to explore level 2 a bit now. Only the special encounters will cause you trouble. But you may wish to build up a bit more cash in the level 2 treasure area if you are close to buying one of the new defensive items. First, though, there's some quick treasure if you take the stairs. But that is in level 2, so we'll put it in the next section. 4-2. LEVEL 2: WITH DETOUR FOR THE RING Here is what you can do just after beating the level 1 boss. From the stairs, 3N, east through the door, E, S, S through the door and collect the gold. Then retreat to the stairs, go E 4S W through the room and walk around the perimeter to grab 5 gold chests. The chests are worth $1-32 here so 8 chests mean $132. Unfortunately, changing levels does not recharge the gold, so you can't fill up THAT quickly. I don't recommend too many fixed fights yet, as they are tougher than the standard fights, but if you are willing to gamble and are at maximum hit points, 4N W of the stairs has your first random squares--a fight or treasure. I'd recommend just building up in the SW, though. You can get to level 6 pretty quickly this way as you get gold, return, and heal. Then you can buy a shield that will get your defense to 41. The best shield and armor give the same protection, but the shield costs less. That makes the rest of this level a cakewalk. So next time you take the unlocked stairs to level 2, go east then south. Go west when you can, 3 squares, then south to the wall, 1W, then S through the door. Each side door here has fights and treasure, but I'd recommend waiting until you're on your way back before visiting, because you just want to make sure you get the next item. Follow the hallway and you will go through one room. Take the far exit--there'll be a fight--then take another exit and go 2S E* along the passage. Turn right to go west(there's a clue in the south, and there's a fight 1N of that) and follow the hallway, turning left with a fight behind the next door. Behind the next, the hall turns and you can go up the stairs. Here on level 3 you may get items from defeating monsters, if you are lucky enough. They are weapons, so if you get an iron sword, chain axe, or killer sword, equip them. Don't equip a dark sword(#7) as that will send your agility plummeting to 1. You can probably win a few fights with little trouble, but to get in and get out, move all the way south, then turn, go 4W and turn north, then through the door. Search in the far corner to get the ring. Now get out of there and go back to Dorl. If you've mapped level 2 out fully, you may notice that the northwest is unused so far. You'll get there eventually. The northeast is also unmapped by this walkthrough, but it is not terribly important. For the next part, you can bulk up on level 3 a while, or you can make a long run to get the Moon Shield, the best shield out there. I recommend the second. So fill up on vegetable juice($20 a pop) back home. Get at least ten. Don't worry about buying better armor. 4-3. LEVEL 3 So if you've retreated to Dorl and returned, then from the stairs to level 2, go east and south. Go all the way west when the passage opens op, then turn and go south and enter the door. Follow the passage, and there will be stairs at the end. You can go south to the corner here for gold, a fight and more gold to the east. In the center of this corridor, you have a room with a fight and two random squares. You can exit west to continue along the winding corridor. Take the first door. You can cut through the room--2E S 3E to avoid monsters--and go through the door, and left/east to the next door. To the end of the corridor, then right and go through the door to the right. You'll have an encounter. But here you want to talk(4th option) and now you can return. You can return all the way if you want--go to the shrine and pray(option 1, option 2) for an extra item. You won't be able to use it til you get to level 7, but it is nice. Now you should be able to shoot the gap and get to the healing statue. Return to the long corridor and turn right--2 more bends before you get to the final door. The next circular hallway has a fight and treasure inside it, and that's not worth it, so you will want to go through the door just to the east, then through the next. You can touch the statue in the northwest for a hit point recharge. Keep following the doors. Retreat if you get too much damage. You can continue on. There are two more rooms with statues in them. One that is not the same color as the first poisons you. The next heals you. At the end of all this, you have stairs up to level 4. Be sure you're healed- -the statue is 2 rooms back of the stairs. If you want, you can build yourself up to level 9, after which you won't have any more fights on level 3. At level 7, you can probably sneak through level 4 of the tower, but you can make sure of things by waiting around the statues and healing after damaging fights. 4-4. LEVEL 4 You don't really have to go back to Dorl here to heal up. If you get poisoned, you have a statue 4S (W) 4N W* S* that will heal your wounds. And there's the statue on level 3. First up is a smash and grab. Go all the way south then west. Go north through the door and follow the passage to the end. You'll take some damage, but you should have enough hit points to get there and get out, especially if you brought along vegetable juice to heal you. Hooray! Another item. This is the jewel. The jewel has a neat property--it allows you to detect important squares 1 square away. This can be handy later when you are searching for something. However, it only detects generic special squares, which include fixed fights, treasure, traps and chutes. 4-5. DOWN THE NORTHWEST TOWER You probably want to go back down(S, E, N) and heal yourself. Then return back up. From the stairs, if you go north 2 and west through the entire corridor, there's a fight in the corner but 4 gold chests on each side of it. Then go north for more treasure and out the door. Go all the way west. The door to the south really is trapped, so don't go in it. Instead take the door west, south, and west to the stairs down. You can loot the treasure in the SE room if you want. It's pretty good--$1 to $64, and 4 of them, for a total expected haul of $130. The SE corner has an encounter, so avoid if you can. There are fights and gold to the east in this first room. Go out the southeast door, then the northeast(go east and north to avoid fights) and loot the chests here if you want before going through the NW door. There are a few more chests before the stairs down. The final level is easy. Go out the door, east through the door, north through the door, and west to the next room. The Moon Shield is in the southwest corner here. It is the best shield in the game, so you should equip it with the intent of selling whatever else you have. This should make it a lot harder for enemies to damage you. Now go back up. You have pretty much cleared out everything you can in the tower, so it is time to go down into the dungeon. You may want to get to level 8 to be sure you can win the fight you'll need to win in level 1 of the dungeon, but you can just stand around on level 3 for that. Incidentally, you can get all the gold you'd ever want by shuffling between level 2 and 3 and looting the area in level 3. It's pretty good gold too, at $1-$48 a pop. 4-6. DUNGEON, LEVEL 1 Finally you can go back to Dorl. Pray at the shrine(option 1, option 2) and that should get you a new item in your inventory. You'll want to save here as a random fight could sock you. If you want, you can buy the best armor(option 2, option 1, item 8) before going downstairs. You probably have enough now. The dungeon is past the first door on the left, and you can take the ladder down. Quickly go all the way east, take the south door and follow to the corner, where you have a chest with the Starmail. Use that item you just got at the temple(option 3, 2-letter item) and you will get the Starmail. It automatically replaces the item you just got. Now your armor class is awesome. You have some good fights that can build up experience quickly, as you can't really be damaged. I got through okay at level 9. You also get the Shi No Ue, Drill Bell and Rune as random items. They are good to sell, and the first is useful against undeads. You won't have much to do here, though, so you can just take the stairs down, or even quicker, the chute. From the stairs up, go 2N (E) and E, then north at the first turn, then west. 4-7. DUNGEON, LEVEL 2 You probably need to be about level 12 to be able to run through here. Take the far door as you spin(to the south--left from when you fall) and S (S) E (E) S (S) S (W) 3W (W) W 2N (N) N* past the door, E* S* and 2W. You have a spinner here, but you can adjust so you see the passage turn to the right. Follow it and you will eventually run into another spinner. Again, you'll want to rotate til you see a passage on the right in the distance. Then continue. When you get to the center, search in the far corner for the feather. Don't use it to get out of this mess. It's a bit of a nuisance, as it may kill you. So just run out of the mess, using healing potions as necessary. 4-8. DUNGEON, LEVEL 3, THE SWORD For this you probably want to flee from combats and move quickly, but fortunately it is a pretty straight shot. Go back to level 2 of the dungeon as before. This time, go to the SW and take the north door, then turn right and drop through the pit at the end of the passage. Go south and all the way east. N E N* (W) 4W (S) 3S 2E 3N and search for the sword. Save your gamestate use the feather to go back again. If it kills you, hit B twice and try again. There's still one more thing to do before exploring level 4. 4-8-1. THE CREST This is not hard to get. Go down from Dorl to level 1 of the dungeon, 2N (E) E and turn and go 2N and then go all the way west. Fall down the pit, note you face north to start off, and go S (S) E (E) S (S) S E (E) N (N) 3E 3S (E) N* E 2N (E) E S. The guy there will talk to you and give you the crest. This gets you all six items you need to navigate level 4. 4-8-2. RUU? RUSE... Finally, level 4 of the dungeon. You can exit the room, 3S, E*(-1 square,) then follow te doors north. At the top room--with a door to the west-- there's a pit in the southwest. Take that. Then after an encounter, go north 1, west all the way, and south. The jewel will detect a spinner. When you land on it, see which way you turn then reorient south. Use the hand mirror to make it really easy, but if you don't want to, just turn either way(turn around if you can see ahead) and see what turns up. There's a pit in the near corner of the next room. You may at this point wish to wait around and fight til your hit points get less than 200--see below. Go towards the door and fight a mirror fencer. These guys are potentially awful, because they have the same hit points as you do. But if you have low hit points, you can heal and hit them quickly. You should be able to beat them quickly either way. But if you have low hit points, you get the first hit in and win quickly. Now go north out the door. When you see a warning, turn east and go forward. Walk around the next warning and then go alongside the room. Face the door and enter. In combat, use the crest. The opponent will talk to you and tell you the location of the final enemy. You can't get there, so use a savestate and then the feather. Again taking precautions as before not to get killed. 4-8-3. SIDE NOTE, FOR AMUSEMENT You can beat Ruu pretty easily, but then you are teleported back to outside Dorl. If you enter, you get a "bad ending." It's technically possible to go back down and win, but it's not worth it. Or you can kill Ruu again and again. 4-8-4. WINNING IT Go back to Dorl and buy all the healing you can. Go down to level 3 as you did for the weapon--taking the chute, going S E S N E S to the pit, and follow it up to the door. Work quickly to avoid conflicts. Then go through the door ahead this time, down the passage and turn left, then through the door. E S (S) encounter S (E) E N (N) N encounter-or-chest W and you drop down. This leads to a weird zigzag maze that is really no fun even if you know how to navigate it. Zigzag N W N 2W N W 2N W N W and re-rotate till you see parts of walls in the background. W N W 2N W (W) through the door. Go west through the spinner and rotate so the side passage is on the left. 2W 8S 4W 2S (E) and you hit a teleport. 5W and you hit a spinner. Use the hand mirror to orient yourself. Go through the door to the west and fight another mirror fencer, then go through the next door and heal up before going north and hitting the big boss. Just hit him a lot. I think he casts some sort of regenerative spell that makes it tricky to hit him, but if you built up your strength, you should do okay. You're going to get hit, and you may even lose a bit. A lot depends on how much damage you hit him for early, and I see a lot of luck(not the character trait.) But kill him, and you get a nice long marquee telling you how great you are in Japanese, I think. 4-9. THE SHORT-THROUGH Hex values are in parentheses to cheat yourself there.
