INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Pro Golfer Saru: Kage no Tournament' for the FDS, released by Bandai in 1987. . This arcade-style golf game consists of 18 holes played over two courses. Each course has odd hazards aside from the traditional ones which make the game a little unique. The game is based on a manga also known as 'Pro Golfer Saru' published by Fujiko Fujio about a young cave man who desires to become the greatest golfer in history. To accomplish this goal, he trains in the most desolate of locations, driving golf balls over giant chasms in an effort to hit greens several hundred meters away. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== Controls: ````````` START Pause During Pause, use the D-Pad to move around and view the hole and you can still shoot from this view rather than panning back. It might be worth doing that to oversee hazards. Left/Right Aim Up/Down Cycle through clubs (High, Medium, Low) A Action B Cancel These controls are quite basic and unlike a golf simulator there are only three clubs available aside from the putter. You will automatically select the latter when you land on the green. Main Menu: `````````` Training: Gives you a hole to swing the ball around and practice. It contains some hazards found in the main course. Tournament: An eighteen hole course over two parts. The first part is set on a desolate, prehistoric planet whereas the second is in a futuristic urban locale. Hazards: ```````` Aside from the usual bunkers, trees and water traps there are also some unnatural or deliberate hazards put into the game. Most of these are either one the ground or low surface, meaning that a medium and high shot are not affected by these hazards. Whirlwind This will grab your ball and drop it further back (randomly?). Steam Redirects your shot, minor annoyance. Barricade This moving barrier blocks your shot, meaning you will have to time your shot through it. Turbines Regularly pop up out of the ground and block your way, luckily not on the green. Moles Pop up randomly on the green, highly annoying. Bird I assume it just blocks a high shot if you hit it, never came across one on my path actually. Holes These holes are on the green and mean you OB the shot. Rocks They block the shot on the green. Worse is that they appear to have different positions from the main view than the closeup of the green. Geyser A spring characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently, this is actually not quite accurate but I think it explain it well enough. They can be found within water and will block low shots. Cheat: `````` This game is quite hard but here is something you can do to help: After taking a shot and while the ball is in the air, hold any directional button to alter the path of the ball. This allows you to land the ball where you want it to. =============================================================================== 03.) COURSES G0300 =============================================================================== All my recommendations assume no wind conditions affect your shot. You will have to compensate accordingly. The directions ("clicks") are from the center position, not the default given to you by the game. The default will always aim for the hole. =============================================================================== Ryu Course G0310 =============================================================================== o---------------------o | Hole 1: | | Par 4 | | 289m | | Hazards: Moles | o---------------------o Start out with a low shot, straight up, power should be 3 bars from top. Follow this up with another low shot, straight left past the sand bunker, also 3 power bars from top. Birdie. o---------------------o | Hole 2: | | Par 5 | | 415m | | Hazards: Whirlwind | o---------------------o Start out with a low shot, straight up, using almost peak power should land before the large tree things. Follow this up with a medium shot, one click right. Full power should land just near the green with some luck, but is a little unpredictable. Eagle if the second shot when all right, otherwise approach for a birdie. o---------------------o | Hole 3: | | Par 4 | | 287m | | Hazards: Geyser | | Moles | o---------------------o Start with a high shot, straight up (adjust slightly right if you want, especially with wind), power should be around 1 1/2 bars from max which should land just in front of the pair of trees. Another high shot with an adjusted angle (1 or 2 clicks left) and 70% power should land on the green. Birdie if you are not blocked by any hole on the green. o---------------------o | Hole 4: | | Par 3 | | 169m | o---------------------o Aim left past the large wall. You can shoot underneath it but it takes a lot of luck and I do not recommend trying. Use a high iron, max power. Aim the second shot on the green, not much to say from here on. I can only get a Par here since I have never found a shortcut. o---------------------o | Hole 5: | | Par 4 | | 284m | o---------------------o It is hard not to hit a bunker here. Bunkers galore unfortunately. Use a low shot with max power, adjusting one click right. It might just land on the center island. From here on aim straight east and shoot a powerful low shot onto the green or at least near it, it might even bounce back if you went too far. Managing to avoid all bunkers rewards you with a birdie opportunity. o---------------------o | Hole 6: | | Par 3 | | 161m | | Hazards: Moles | o---------------------o Start out with a low shot, 1 bar below max power and one click right or maybe slightly less power. This should land on the green for a birdie chance. o---------------------o | Hole 7: | | Par 4 | | 292m | | Hazards: Whirlwind | | Rocks | o---------------------o Use a low shot, straight up and max power. The green is misleading since the bottom left corner is where you want to be, not the other sides blocked by rocks. Approaching is tricky, I suggest a high shot, 60% power and slightly left. Good luck getting a birdie. o---------------------o | Hole 8: | | Par 4 | | 281m | | Hazard: Geyser | o---------------------o Start out with a low shot, max power, three clicks left (you want to get far on the left side of the course without hitting the mountain range). Your second shot should still be low and as powerful, aiming into the top right corner of the map. If you got a decent second shot here then you can birdie but it is not so easy. o---------------------o | Hole 9: | | Par 5 | | 438m | | Hazards: Whirlwind | | Bird | | Rocks | o---------------------o Long hole. Start with a high, max power, straight north. This should land nicely on the fairway. Second shot is still high and max power but straight west instead. It should once again land nicely on the fairway. For the third shot you will once again want a high club but this time only 90% power or so, straight north and this should reach the green and give you a nice position to birdie. =============================================================================== Tecno Course G0320 =============================================================================== o---------------------o | Hole 10: | | Par 3 | | 173m | | Hazards: Turbines | o---------------------o Use a low club, ~80% power. Aim right around 3 to 4 clicks and the shot should land on the green area (these black square are holes by the way, avoid!). Take another low shot with only around 55% power and it should bounce onto green. A Par is pretty common here, I do not think you can actually get a more ideal position after the second shot to birdie this regularly. o---------------------o | Hole 11: | | Par 4 | | 281m | o---------------------o Start out with a high shot, max power and aim straight north. This should land on the "fairway". You can aim one click right if you want. For the second shot, shoot high with almost full power, aim slightly northeast as indicated by the game. Not hard to reach the green for a birdie. o---------------------o | Hole 12: | | Par 4 | | 299m | | Hazards: Steam | o---------------------o Use a medium shot, aim 2 or 3 clicks right and use max power. This should bounce off the wall and reach pretty far north. Now get onto the green in any way you can, it should be quite close already just watch out for all the water and that hole at the corner of the green. Birdie, quite easy. o---------------------o | Hole 13: | | Par 3 | | 160m | | Hazards: Turbines | o---------------------o Easiest hole in the game! Keep it straight, low drive, max power and it will land right on the green with either some bouncing or just like that already. Sure, there is some luck involved with those turbines popping up here and there but there is not much you can do to avoid it. Birdie for sure. o---------------------o | Hole 14: | | Par 4 | | 299m | o---------------------o Start out with a low shot, max power, and around 1 to 2 clicks to the right. The second shot should have taken you further than the game must have anticipated because another shot like that and you have reached the green. Medium drive might be better. A birdie is on the cards. o---------------------o | Hole 15: | | Par 5 | | 423m | | Hazards: Barricade | | Holes | o---------------------o This is easy, and an eagle is not unlikely. Change the aim of course, maybe one click left and make a low shot with max power. It should land near the moving barricade. Second shot should be able to go straight towards the green from here, where you will probably land slightly to the left. You will have to do a high shot with around 60% power to avoid overshooting. There are holes on the green that might just cost you that eagle but otherwise this is easy. o---------------------o | Hole 16: | | Par 4 | | 289m | o---------------------o Use a high drive with max power, aiming east to reach the greenish area. From here, aim north and slightly right/left if necessary. Use a high shot, full power and the small building walkway helps to bounce onto the green if you come short. Birdie. o---------------------o | Hole 17: | | Par 4 | | 264m | | Hazards: Steam | | Holes | o---------------------o The steam might distract you but otherwise you just want to hit a low max power drive 3-clicks right, it should then bounce onto the top wall and in a nice position for the second shot. Another powered low drive should hit the green at the east end. Birdie unless the steam caught you or those holes on the green screwed you over as well. o---------------------o | Hole 18: | | Par 5 | | 474m | | Hazards: Barricade | | Turbines | o---------------------o Long hole. For the first shot, hit a high drive, straight north, max power. With the second shot you want to aim almost directly east, 90% or less power will land on the fairway. Aim northwest and shoot up the fairway, not much you can do about this shot and just hope you avoid the barricade. I tend to use a high shot with medium power to just kind of bounce into the green. This is Par unless somebody has the accuracy to aim for the bridges and cut across that way. Good luck trying to find out. =============================================================================== YY.)
