Walkthrough is completed. 1.0 published on 10-29-04 Partial walkthrough published at Gamefaqs.com. Hourglass of Summer is an adventure game where you, as Kotaro Makimura, day-drop through a short period of time over the summer, and try to change the past in order to prevent the untimely death of your beloved Kaho Serizawa. The characters in this story include: Kotaro Makimura--this is your character. You're a sophomore at Kurahama High School, and vice president of the Boxing Club. Ai Seno--your childhood friend. She lives next door, and helps out at the Uomasa fish market, run by her dad. Ai is honest, caring, energetic, and a cry baby. Takeshi Tokieda--your best friend, and president of the Boxing Club. He's observant, reliable, and a steady influence on you. Kaho Serizawa--the girl of your dreams. She is beautiful, elegant, and serious about acting. Kaho is president of the Drama Club. Mana Sawamura--a quiet girl who loves the water. She is a rising star in diving, and competes in tournaments. Tomomi Yanagihara--a science teacher at school. She is young, strict, and absent-minded about her appearance. Although she is a biology teacher, Tomomi is fascinated by superstition and supernatural phenomenon. Lee Jane--a Time Patroller who is gorgeous, but moody. She is seeking to resolve the time irregularity that resulted in Kaho's death in the future. Lee Jane provides you with important information from time to time. =========== WALKTHROUGH =========== A. General Information ---------------------- Hourglass of Summer is a long, complicated game with no save point passwords. The lack of passwords to go back to a point within the game is a major problem considering that you may easily spend three hours (making frequent use of the "Next" button on your dvd player remote) and still wind up with a bad ending because you make a single bad decision somewhere along the way. This partial walkthrough is the product of 35 hours (and counting) of playing this game. So far I have unlocked the endings for Tomomi, Mana, Lee Jane, and Ai. This walkthrough will be updated whenever I unlock Kaho's ending. The decisions are organized by the dates that you day-drop into. Some days will have a lot of decisions that await you, other days will have no decision at all. For these days with no decision to make, I put "[NONE]". You can skip these days by hitting "Next" on your dvd player remote. Also, please note that the walkthroughs only provide the TRUE/GOOD endings for the girls. After the text for the good ending is over, you should see a "THANK YOU FOR PLAYING" message on your screen. After that, there is a credit roll with video clip; each character ending has a special clip composed of her CGs. Once the credit roll is ended, you'll see a CG of the character whose true ending you achieved, followed by a copyright Princess Soft screen. After that you'll see an epilogue. You could, if wish to, hit "Next" on your dvd remote during the credit roll, and go straight to the epilogue. B. Detailed Walkthrough ----------------------- 1. Tomomi's true ending: ------------------------ 7/14--wait --glasses [key decision!] --run in hallway --find out identity --find and complain 9/01--[NONE] 7/29--pick it up [key decision!] --capture and complain 7/15--talk to Ai --I'll talk to Tomo-chan --make Takeshi go --seriously ask for her help 8/04--prefer older women [key decision!] --save Tomomi [key decision!] 7/16--look for teacher --look near entrance 7/17--change the subject 7/30--[NONE] [note: the plot really picks up from this point forward; it is recommended that you give the "next" button a a break and let the game play itself out.] 7/18--don't do 7/19--ask for more time 7/28--[NONE] 7/31--jump out in front 8/05--refuse 7/14--[NONE] Tomomi's true ending was the first one that I managed to obtain. The choices that lead to her path were fairly obvious to me, for the most part. To get on Tomo-chan's path, you need to: (a) express interest in her, and (b) make her believe your day-dropping story. The key decisions up to and including August 4 fall under category (a). The decisions on July 16 provide solid proof for category (b). Surprisingly, the events involving the stalker play NO role in unlocking Tomo-chan's path. 2. Mana's true ending: ---------------------- 7/14--go ahead --no boyfriend --bouqet of flowers --run away 9/01--[NONE] 7/29--ignore it --hit from movie --run away 7/15--talk to Takeshi --have fun --join Captain's meeting [key decision!] --don't talk 8/04--younger person [key decision!] --own future [key decision!] 8/05--fine, I'll go --ask about Mana [key decision!] 8/06--school --pool side [key decision!] 8/07--in front of her --fish burger --love letter 7/16--love letter 7/17--[NONE] 7/18--Shakespeare 7/19--shout --chase --tell her 8/11--pat her head 8/12--promise date --interested in Mana [key decision!] 8/13--refuse [key decision!] --watch Mana [key decision!] --leave alone 8/23--[NONE] 7/23--[NONE] 7/21--[NONE] [note: this is the point where Mana's path takes off. You meet with Takeshi for a club meeting. If you don't see this, you're on the wrong path. Starting from this day forward, you should NOT use the "next" button to skip ahead. Otherwise, you'll miss out on important parts of Mana's story.] 8/20--kiss her 8/21--jump into pool --buy her a Neon Tetra 8/22--Mana's apartment 8/25--[NONE] 8/24--hug Mana 8/16--[NONE] 8/17--[NONE] 8/18--[NONE] 8/19--go home together --tell Mana I like her 8/31--railroad crossing [key decision!] 8/25(b)--[NONE] 8/24(b)--[NONE] Mana's decision tree is surprising. After playing the game a few times, I was convinced that you needed to prevent Mana's accident in order to achieve her good ending. Boy, was I wrong! It appears that Mana MUST be injured in order to get her good ending. After you catch Lee Jane and speak to her, your focus turned toward preventing Mana's accident so that she won't be in a wheelchair so that she won't get stuck in the railroad tracks. But if you look at the decision tree above for Mana, you'll notice that there is nothing mentioning fixing the clock in the gym or fixing the mirror. In other words, saving Mana from the accident will lead you AWAY from her true ending. Another interesting point is WHEN you meet Mana for the first time. In order to open Mana's path, you MUST go to the Captain's meeting on July 15, where you will see Mana for the very first time in the hallway. Your next encounter is on August 5th, when you went to school during summer break to do a favor for the forgetful Ai. For a discussion of Mana's plot, please be sure to check out my plot summaries below. 3. Lee Jane's true ending: -------------------------- 7/14--go ahead --no boyfriend --bouqet of flowers --find out identity --find and complain 9/01--[NONE] 7/29--ignore it --television show --capture and complain 7/15--talk to Takeshi --do your best --make Takeshi go --don't talk 8/04--same age [key decision!] --for my own future [key decision!] 8/05--if I go --make dinner! --compensation 8/06--go to town 8/07--in front of her --fish burger --ran into each other 7/16--confront her --write it myself 7/17--[NONE] 7/18--whatever 7/19--shout [key decision!] --chase [key decision!] --forcefully [key decision!] [note: Lee Jane tries to run away from you. But because you grabbed her at the instant she day-dropped, you both ended up in between time. If you didn't get this part, then you're on the wrong path.] 8/11--pat her head 8/12--promise date [key decision!] --cannot say 8/13--refuse --see Kaho --ignore 8/23--[NONE] 7/23--[NONE] 8/18--clock --lower the clock --tell someone 8/19--follow Mana --fix mirror 8/20--[NONE] 8/21--swim 8/22--[NONE] 7/24--don't --leave it alone --go home 7/25--ask her 7/26--agree 7/27--ask Tomomi 7/28--stop Tomomi 7/30--letter --say no --wait for solid proof 8/02--run into apartment 7/31--[NONE] 8/01--[NONE] 8/03--[NONE] 8/06--return to Uomasa --don't tell 8/07--[NONE] 8/14--ratatouille --eavesdrop --listen longer 8/15--say goodbye 8/16--go to Kaho's house --cheer Lee Jane up [key decision!] 8/17--go with Kaho 8/24--[NONE] 8/31--go with her [note: from this point forward, the story is all about you and Lee Jane. So you shouldn't skip anything.] Lee Jane's path is opened once you forcefully confront her on July 19. But in order to get her ending, you have to actively avoid ending up with the other girls by playing favorites with any one of them. You also have to promise a date with Lee Jane on August 12, and cheer her up on August 16. If you choose to go with Lee Jane on August 31, you'll become an assistant Time Patroller, and help her out whenever she needs your help. Otherwise, it's goodbye forever (a bad ending). 4. Ai's true ending: -------------------- 7/14--wait --glasses --run in the hallway --find out identity --find and complain 9/01--[NONE] 7/29--pick it up --capture and complain 7/15--talk to Takeshi --talk to Tomo-chan --join Captain's meeting --friend's experience 8/04--same age [key decision!] --my own future [key decision!] 8/05--if I go --clean my room --recompensation [key decision!] 8/06--stay home [key decision!] 8/07--in front of her --spaghetti --love letter 7/16--love letter 7/17--[NONE] 7/18--Shakespeare 7/19--shout --say 8/11--pat her head 8/12--talk about Kaho --cannot say 8/13--refuse --see Kaho --ignore 8/23--[NONE] 7/23--[NONE] 8/18--examine clock --lower the clock --tell someone 8/19--follow Mana --fix mirror 8/20--[NONE] 8/21--swim 8/22--[NONE] [note: on this day, Mana should arrive at the competition safely. If she didn't, you're on the wrong path. If you did not tell someone about the clock and fix the mirror, the game will end here as a bad ending.] 7/24--don't go --grab towel --look for Ai [key decision!] 7/25--ask her 7/26--agree 7/27--ask Tomomi 7/28--stop Tomomi 7/30--letter --say no --wait for solid proof 8/02--run into apartment 7/31--[NONE] 8/01--[NONE] 8/03--[NONE] 8/08--have someone go instead --tell Ai 8/09--[NONE] 8/10--[NONE] 8/14--eat ratatouille --don't 8/15--say goodbye 8/16--go with Ai [key decision!] --cheer Lee Jane up 8/17--ask Ai [key decision!] 8/24--[NONE] [note: on this day, you should be watching fireworks with Ai. If you don't see this, then you're on the wrong path. Also, you should NOT skip anything from this point forward. The love triangle starts to sizzle!] 8/25--[NONE] 8/26--follow Takeshi 8/27--let her go --call myself 8/30--[NONE] 7/21--don't --good luck 8/31--tell Ai 7/20--give letter to Takeshi 8/31(b)--[NONE] 9/01(b)--[NONE] Ai's decision tree involves the following: (a) opening the Ai/Kaho path by showing interest in girls your age; (b) changing the past so that Mana will not have an accident and miss her diving competition; (c) helping Tomomi avoid getting kidnapped; and (d) choosing Ai over Kaho. 5. Kaho's true ending: ---------------------- 7/14--go ahead --no boyfriend --bouqet of flowers --run away 9/01--[NONE] 7/29--ignore --hit from movie --run away 7/15--talk to Takeshi --have fun --make Takeshi go --don't talk 8/04--same age [key decision!] --become Kaho's boyfriend [key decision!] 8/05--fine, I'll go --recompensation 8/06--school --drama club [key decision!] 8/07--next to her --touch her hair --talk to her --spaghetti --love letter [key decision!] 7/16--love letter [key decision!] 7/17--[NONE] 7/18--Shakespeare 7/19--walk closer 8/11--remember Kaho [key decision!] 8/12--talk about Kaho --cannot say 8/13--go watch her practice --ignore 8/23--[NONE] 7/23--[NONE] 8/18--examine clock --lower clock --tell someone 8/19--follow Mana --fix mirror 8/20--[NONE] 8/21--swim 8/22--[NONE] 7/24--go to drama club [key decision!] --leave it alone --go home [key decision!] 7/25--ask her 7/26--agree 7/27--ask Tomomi 7/28--stop Tomomi 7/30--letter --say no --wait for solid proof 8/02--run into apartment 7/31--[NONE] 8/01--[NONE] 8/03--[NONE] 8/08--have someone go instead --don't tell [key decision!] 8/09--[NONE] 8/10--[NONE] 8/14--eat rataouille --eavesdrop --head back 8/15--walk with Kaho [key decision!] 8/16--go to Kaho's house [key decision!] 8/17--go with Kaho [key decision!] 8/24--[NONE] [note: on this day, you should be meeting with Kaho at the shrine. If you don't see this, then you're on the wrong path. Also, the story for Kaho picks up from this point forward; so, you should not skip anything from this day forward.] 8/25--[NONE] 8/26--[NONE] 8/27--[NONE] 8/30--ask kindly --sorry --go to Kaho's house 7/21--talk 8/31--go to Tomomi's apartment 7/20--write letter to Tomomi --give to Takeshi 8/31(b)--[NONE] 9/01(b)--[NONE] Kaho's path and Ai's path are very similar up to 8/24. You have to help Mana avoid her accident, and prevent Tomo-chan's kidnapping. However, you have to actively pursue Kaho and show interest in her. In addition, you MUST confront Kaho's father twice--the first time by walking with Kaho back to her house on August 15, and going back again the next day. You have to stand up to the old man, and show your love toward his daughter. ============== PLOT SUMMARIES [MAJOR SPOILERS!!!] ============== This section is primarily for the benefit of gamers who couldn't follow the story for each girl's path, for whatever reason. Hourglass of Summer throws a lot of material at you, so it is quite understandable if you missed something along the way. Obviously, you may wish to skip this section if you don't want to read spoilers. 1. Tomomi's story: ------------------ Tomo-chan has a very long kept secret. Like you, she is a day-dropper. As a young child, she saw glimpses of the future. One major glimpse for her was seeing her future boyfriend. Keeping this dream alive, Tomo-chan did not go out with anyone during her childhood. Slowly her hope faded away, and she agreed to go out with a guy in college. The relationship ended badly, and she dumped him. Unfortunately, he couldn't let go, and the ex-boyfriend started stalking her. Tomo-chan was shocked when she finally laid her eyes on you for the first time . . . when you came to Kurahama as a freshman and she was a teacher, a ten years age difference. Therefore, she buried her feelings for you deep within her heart for two years. Now what caused the time irregularity? It turns out that the powder that Lee Jane accidentally splashed you with only ENHANCES the user's natural abilities. In other words, day-dropping is a psychic ability, and the powder wouldn't work for ordinary people. Lee Jane theorized that the irregularity occurred as a reaction to the close physical proximity of two day-droppers. And the distortion could be repaired by simply resetting time for yourself and Tomo-chan back to July 14th. But what about the memories you share w/ Tomo-chan, and the love you developed with her? For the sake of everyone involved, including poor Kaho, your love must be sacrificed. Or was it? The answer to that question lies in the epilogue, which will appear after the credit rolls are through, and copyright message for Princess Soft is shown. 2. Mana's story: ---------------- Mana made a lot of sacrifices to compete in diving. She moved far away from her family, and lives alone in a dorm in order to attend Kurahama High, and use its first class training facilities. Quiet and reserved, she is a loner at school and even among her teammates in swimming. She depended on no one but her coach, and also had a crush on him. However, he doesn't see her as anything more than a prized pupil. Even though Mana sacrificed herself and pushed the coach out of the path of the falling clock, he dumped her and transferred to another school after it became known that Mana could no longer compete in diving due to her injury. Seeing her life long training and hard work go down the drain, and being dumped by her beloved coach proved too much for Mana, who tried to kill herself by jumping off the roof at the hospital. Luckily, you arrived in time, and physically restrained her. Trying to plant a seed of hope within Mana, you promised to win the upcoming practice match in boxing for her. Day dropping back to the week before the match, you tried your best to train yourself for the match, and even solicited the help of your best friend, Takeshi, in your endeavor. Meanwhile, the aloof Mana watched you train, and became interested in you. Shortly before the diving tournament, you confessed your feelings for Mana and asked for a reply after your match is over. Although you lost the match, you had received your answer the previous day. Will Mana ever be able to overcome her leg injury, and go back to the water? What will happen between you and Mana? The answers lie in the epilogue for Mana's true ending. 3. Lee Jane's story: -------------------- You really don't get to know her very well until August 31. But through the brief time you spend with her, you realize that you have feelings for her. As a Time Patroller, she has to avoid direct contact with citizens of the era that she day-dropped into. It's a lonely and thankless job. While watching you help Kaho avoid her untimely demise, Lee Jane develops a deep appreciation for you as a person, and starts to fall in love with you. Is your love meant to be? The answer lies in the epilogue for Lee Jane's true ending. 4. Ai's story: -------------- Your character, Kotaro, is an idiot. A big idiot. Why? Because you failed to notice Ai's true feelings for you, for a very long time. She has loved you since elementary school, and had eyes only for you. Other people, including Kaho and Takeshi, knows the truth. It is that obvious to everyone. Yet, you do not find out until you coincidentally see Ai together with Takeshi at a cafe, and later confronted Takeshi. Takeshi, despite his own feelings for Ai, told you the truth, and that Ai was going to give up on you. Confronted with the truth, you searched your heart and realized that Ai, rather than Kaho, is the one for you. Yet, there remains a problem--Kaho. How will you and Ai tell Kaho about your relationship? Once again, fate intervened and Kaho happened upon you and Ai sharing a tender moment at the shopping mall. Unable to deny what she saw with her own eyes, Kaho became very angry. Feeling tricked and betrayed, Kaho left for a trip with her father. Unable to call Kaho and explain yourselves to her, you agreed to let Ai write a letter to Kaho explaining yourselves and asking for her forgiveness. Being the wonderful and kind hearted person that she is, Kaho requested a meeting with the two of you---on the fateful day of August 31, the day she is destined to die. Thankfully, your day-dropping ability came in handy. You day-dropped back to the past a la "Back to the Future," and did the things you needed to accomplish to ensure that the stalker doesn't kidnap Tomomi and crash his car into Kaho at the train station. Having changed Kaho's fate, you and Ai were able to reconcile with Kaho. What does the future hold in store for you and Ai? The answer lies in the epilogue for Ai's true ending. 5. Kaho's story: ---------------- When you first laid eyes on Kaho at a school play, it was love at first sight. You saw her as the girl of your dreams--beautiful, elegant, proper, mature, respectful, and kindhearted. Yet, it turns out that's just a mask. Kaho is insecure, lack self-confidence, and stubborn in her own way. Given the way she is treated at home by her strict and overly protective father, it is no wonder that Kaho has a dark side to her. Nonetheless, Kaho slowly changes before yor eyes. She starts becoming more open to you, and share her true feelings. No longer independent or a perfectionist, she learns to depend on you as her feelings for you grow. But the world isn't perfect. There are forces at work that seem determined to terminate your developing relationship with Kaho. In addition to the cruel hand of fate that demands the untimely death of Kaho, Ai and Kaho's dad have their own agenda and don't want the relationship to happen. Ai finally confessed her true feelings for you, and reconciled with the fact that you only saw her as a childhood friend and neighbor. Kaho's father, after a number of confrontations with you, finally accepted the fact that there is a person out there who loves his daughter just as much as he does. In the end, both gave their blessings to your relationship with Kaho. So what does the future hold for you and Kaho? Lee Jane accepts your request, and offers you a glimpse in the epilogue. =============== EXTRA PASSWORDS =============== These passwords are provided to you once you finish the game.
