Version history
v 0.25 Johto locations all added to list. All are verified by me using cheats
9/16/09 and checking Pokédex. I also went to the Bug Catching contest to find
what is in there. Currently, there is no way to distinguish between
finding Pokémon in grass/on the ground, by surfing, and by fishing. A
later update will include that. Kanto locations and Safari Zone, as
well as trainer-triggered swarms, are unknown. It is also not yet known
if there is a place to revive fossils, and if any fossils are version-
specific.
National Dex Pokémon data has been taken from Serebii.net. Locations
for radio-triggered, Safari Zone, Bug Contest, Headbutt, and Pokéwalker
Pokémon is still not known.
v 0.50 Serebii updated the Pokédex, meaning I was able to copy all the
9/18/09 information for Kanto locations, as well as specify between walking,
surfing, and fishing (and rock smashing). Some info seemed to conflict
info that I personally found from the game, so it may not be 100%
accurate yet.
Additionally, a few minor errors from v 0.25 have been corrected, the
locations for Hoenn/Sinnoh Sound Station Pokémon are listed now, and
the Hoenn-based Pokéwalker Courses are added.
Still missing info for Safari Zone, National Bug Contest, National
Headbutt trees, and later Pokéwalker Courses.
v 0.90 Data for Safari Zone, National Bug Contest, National Headbutt trees,
9/27/09 and the last Pokéwalker Courses added. A handful of Hoenn Pokémon are
still under speculation to be version-specific. If not, there exist
two Pokémon that are unobtainable without GBA games.
The National Dex section was also reorganized, and a couple mistakes
and omissions were corrected.
Items section added. I'm not 100% sure about the Pokéthlon prizes
being correct, so that may be up for revision.
It's also at this point that I realized my version numbering system is
totally wrong but... meh. I guess when the other segment is added (If
it is added, that is), it will max out at 2.0 instead of 1.0.

Currently this guide only lists the Pokémon by species. They are organized
by accessibility, and each Pokémon has evolution information listed in addition
to in-game locations, since in many cases it may be easier to evolve or breed a
Pokémon you already have rather than find the other somewhere in the wild.
When detailed data is made available that shows the exact rarity of each
Pokémon in each area, a second part of the guide will be added to display that
information, including the different rarities at different times of the day.
That half of the guide is more useful if you plan on playing through the game
and catching everything possible as soon as it's obtainable.

The Johto Dex is almost identical to the New Pokédex ordering in the
original Gold/Silver games, but with the addition of five new evolutions
first seen in the Sinnoh region. Not all of these are actually obtainable
before upgrading to the National Dex, but since the numbering system includes
them with the ones that are available, they are listed with the rest.
Also note that some of these Pokémon have evolutions or pre-evolutions
that are not part of the Johto Dex. These are marked with an extra vertical
line below a Pokémon to indicate it evolves further, and a ^ accent for babies.
It is possible to get most of these by trading in the proper items, but you
can trade any Pokémon, regardless of Johto Dex inclusion, anyway.
Some Pokémon appear only at a certain time of day. If nothing is
specified, it can be found all day. If a list of locations is followed by the
words morning, day, and/or night in parenthesis, that time of day applies to
all locations in the list. If certain locations contain the letters
m, d, and/or n in parenthesis, without a space separating it from the location
name, that means it applies to only that location. The same principle applies
to the rods (Old/o, Good/g, and Super/s).
For starter Pokémon, only one is listed with the regularly obtainable
Pokémon, and the rest are in the "must trade" section. Obviously the list may
not apply to you in these cases, but the alternatives are listed.

The National Dex is obtained before getting on the S.S. Aqua in Olivine
City after beating the Elite 4. Once you have it, trainers will start to use
Pokémon from the Hoenn and Sinnoh regions, and you can catch some of your own.
However, most are not found in the wild normally. Some can be found in
normal areas by playing a certain radio station or during a swarm, as well as
a few in headbutt trees. Some have also been imported to the Safari Zone and
National Park (for the Bug Catching Contest). There's also some that are
related to Pokémon in the Johto dex, so you can breed or evolve those using
items or methods not available until later.
The Safari Zone is quite tricky to use in HG/SS, especially when compared
to the relatively simple versions in previous games. All the National Dex
Pokémon hidden within it can only be found if you place enough of the correct
type of item in a certain area. This applies to some Johto Dex Pokémon as well.
However, a unique twist that applies to only the National Dex Pokémon is that
sometimes the items must be left out for a certain amount of time before they
attract the rarer Pokémon.

Event Notes:
Regirock/ice/steel have in-game locations in Platinum, but these are not
accessible normally. A special Level 100 Regigigas "met in a fateful encounter"
must be in your party to open their areas. This was distributed at various
events and must be traded from Diamond/Pearl, as Platinum was not yet released.
Alternatively, they may be imported from Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald versions,
where they are found in hidden caves throughout Hoenn. This requires use of Pal
Park, meaning DSi users cannot import them.

In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, all three Regis must be in your party to
awaken Regigigas in the Snowpoint Temple. Whether they were caught in Platinum
or Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald does not matter.

Trading Arceus (obtained from an event) to HeartGold or SoulSilver allows you
to access the Shinto Ruins when you take it to the Ruins of Alph. Arceus will
create Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina for you. You can only choose one of them,
and it will be obtained at Level 1. This is the only way to get Giratina's
Origin Forme in HG/SS, as the Griseous Orb cannot be traded.

is a task for completionists or people who simply want to battle with them.
