Personal Opinion ============================================================================= Err... 2nd full FAQ ever written, so still pretty crummy at writing them. Anyway, I started this FAQ for the same reason as my other one, to record my playthrough for future curiosity's sake. I played the first Harukanaru Toki no Naka de after watching the anime... and I wanted to know what the ending was really supposed to be. Relative to the first one, I like this one a lot more, gameplay-wise. Plot's less complex but for a non-Japanese reader/speaker, that's just fine for me. Anyway, appreciate comments by e-mail as always. ============================================================================= 2. General Story ============================================================================= ********************************************** 2.1. Harukanaru Toki no Naka de Background ********************************************** In case, you're new to the Harukanaru Toki universe, the series is always about a heroine who gets sucked into a mystical world, in which she gets 8 protectors (2 for each mystical creature gods). Then, the heroine and protectors fight/purify monsters until they beat the big boss while becoming friends, etc. Basically, an Otome/rpg game combo. ********************************************** 2.2. Yumenoukihashi ********************************************** This one is more of a tribute to the older series. So you can choose to be any of the 3 heroines from the past games. More importantly, the heroine you choose can collect all 24 guardians from the past games. Story wise, North Star God and South Star God (South Star isn't real, but it's symmetric to call him that) got in a fight. So North Star God decided to capture the 3 priestesses. The South Star God helps your heroine escape and the heroine along with her and the other priestesses' guardians try to save the other two in captivity and defeat the North Star God. ============================================================================= 3. Battle System ============================================================================= ********************************************** 3.1. Elements ********************************************** Like the older games, each guardian has an element and the elements counteract each other. So each element is weak against itself (in the sense that they do minimal damage to it, but also takes least damage when attacked) The elements that are strong against each other is the following star- shaped loop: Metal strong against Wood Wood stong against Earth Earth strong against Water Water strong against Fire Fire strong against Metal ********************************************** 3.2. Menu Tabs ********************************************** The Menu (see 4.2.1) has 3 tabs on the left, and 4 big tabs. The 4 big tabs are important for battle preparation. They're in a diamond shape like the following: Character Spells Special Abilities Formation -----------3.2.1. Character------------------------ This section lets you tap on the character you want to know the stats for. The top DS screen would show in right to left: 1) Name of character 2) Representing Mystical Creature 3) Age 4) Birthday 5) Friendship level with the Miko 6) Special Abilities and 7) Stats at the bottom: Attack, Defense, Magic Power -----------3.2.2. Spells------------------------ This section lists the spells learned, who is necessary to perform a spell, and energy cost (See Spells section) -----------3.2.3. Special Abilities---------------- Enter this section to use out of combat special abilities, such as heal and monster dispel. (see Special Abilities section) ---------------3.2.4. Formation-------------------- This page lets you setup your battle wheel. Keep in mind that you cannot change your battle wheel characters once the battle starts. On the bottom DS screen, the Battle Wheel has 8 slots, the top 3 slots are the characters that will start battle. Tap the middle of the wheel and you can turn the wheel by moving your stylus in a circular fashion to change the 3 characters in combat. You can exchange characters, by dragging characters from the left area onto the wheel. Note, the tabs 1, 2, 3, that means you're picking guardians from Generation 1, 2, 3 respectively. The top DS screen on the right will show you the spell combos that are available to the 3 characters in the top 3 slots. So as you rotate the wheel you can see different spell combos pop up. If a spell is there, but not highlighted, it just means that one or more of the required characters do not have enough energy ********************************************** 3.3. Battle Screen ********************************************** The top DS screen shows the HP and energy of the guardians, plus the HP and element of the enemy. Pretty self explanatory. The bottom DS screen shows the guardian that you can issue a command to. The 4 command tabs near the bottom are the following (right to left): 1) Attack: uh... attack... nothing special 2) Special Ability 1 (unique to characters, see Character section) 3) Special Ability 2 4) Run Away: Escape from battle, but you will lose friendship level with all guardians on the wheel. There are also 4 tabs to the left of the bottom DS screen. They are the following from top-down: 1) Five Element: Just shows you the element weaknesses. 2) Exchange: Let's you change the 3 battlers by rotating the Formation wheel 3) Spells: Let's you use spells/spell combos when the conditions are met Note: For Exchange and Spells, if you already selected actions for guardians, you will get a prompt saying your selected actions are void if you choose to Exchange or select a spell to cast, is that okay... OK (green) or No (red) 4) Cheer: My favorite command! When you tap this, you get to cheer on the guardians replenishing their energy. During this time, you can tap on the default cheers, or speak into the microphone with other cheers (i.e. Ganbatte, Shinjimasu). You can also call out a guardian's name to replenish his energy by a lot, or press A for guardian furthest right, X for middle guardian, Y for leftmost guardian ********************************************** 3.4. Special Battle Events ********************************************** ----------3.4.1. Chain Battles------------------- Sometimes, the heroine would engage in Chain Battles. You can tell you are in one by looking at the top right corner of the top DS screen. If you see, 3 elements there, that means that you're in a chain battle and the next 2 enemy will have the elements listed. After you kill enemy 1, you get a prompt to continue battling, if you select yes, then battle 2 starts, if you select no, it acts just like a regular battle. ----------3.4.2. Bonus Killing Blow------------------- Ah, this one is fun. When you use a Spell, whose damage doubled would kill the enemy, you enter into a bonus mode. For example, if the enemy is at 1/2 HP and your spell brings its HP down to less than 1/4, you enter the bonus mode. In this mode, you have to tap the yellow colored circles before time runs out. (Timer is on the left of the DS screen) If you succeed, the enemy will lose the rest of its HP and die. If you fail, nothing bad happens, just have to shave off the remaining HP of the enemy to kill it :). ============================================================================= 4. Walkthrough ============================================================================= ********************************************** 4.1. Starting the Game and Controls ********************************************** ----------4.1.1. Starting Screen------------------- Touch the screen after the opening cutscene to reach the starting screen Start screen consists of 4 tabs and a big semicircle at the bottom for continuing (if you have a save game). The tabs starting from the left: 1) MobileJOY: for linking with other DSes to send pictures and stuff I think. Not too sure, since I can't try it out. 2) Settings: for setting game options and settings The left most edge has a red and green tab, red for resetting to default and green=DONE. On the right, there's 3 tabs i) The topmost tab controls game play options (starting from left): a) Monster Strength: top option=weak, bottom=strong b) Wait for Voice Completion: Top option=can't go to next line until speaker finishes talking, Bottom option: Can skip line even if voice acting's not done c) Tutorial: Top=On, Bottom=Off (I keep it on) d) Change read color (changes lines displayed before from black to a light blue color): top option=yes bottom option=no e) Skip speed: higher=faster f) Skip Mode: Top option: skip line by line, Bottom: skip the whole conversation g) Line display speed: higher=faster ii) Next tab: controls Sound a) General Volume (higher=louder) b) Sound Effect volume c) Background Music volume d) Sound Mode: Stereo and Mono iii) Voice Acting: You can turn on/off voice acting for the characters here... but why ever turn off? :) 3) Nostalgia: Self-explanatory, where all of your cutscenes and plot are stored if you want to see a scene or picture again. (tap on the little return button in the bottom right corner to return to main menu) To collect all the cut scenes/pictures: Do a fastest path run through with any of the mikos once, do a full path with all 3 mikos. Plus, go to the pink dots after finishing the game and loading the finished game (e-mail if you miss any and can't figure it out) 4) Start New Game ----------4.1.2. Start New Game------------------- So start the new game, you get to select your heroine, the priestesses (miko). Supposedly, all three Mikos were ported to the same mystical world, except Generation 1 Miko was ported to the mystical world that is 100 years before the Generation 2 Miko's and 200 years before Generation 3 Miko's. From left to right: Generation 3 Miko (Priestess): Nozomi Kasuga Generation 2 Miko: Karin Takakura Generation 1 Miko: Akane Motomiya Do note that once you picked your Miko, she can still only reach max "friend" level with the 8 guardians from her time even though she can battle with all 24 guardians. So tap on your choice after you finish deciding. And tap on the green "Decided" button in the bottom left corner. Next screen, you get to change the heroine's last name if you feel like it. On the very left, top tab=move the cursor on the name screen up, 2nd tab=move the curson down, 3rd tab=clear the character, 4th tab=Done The big writing area is obvious (write 1 character on it), then tap on the tab to the right under it to display characters that fits the character best, tap on the character and it will display on the top screen. Tap on the tab to the left if you want to clear what you wrote in the writing area. You can still tap the "Return" button to the very bottom right at this time to change heroine at this time. Otherwise, you tap Done, Confirm your choice by tapping the Green choice, same screen pops up for you to change heroine's first name. Same thing as before. If you're starting the Game a second time, you will be prompted if you want to have the guardians to keep their stats and spells/spell combo they've learned. Pick yes (green) or no (red). ********************************************** 4.2. Story Starts ********************************************** ------4.2.1. Controls While Navigating Story------- Bottom DS screen will have 6 tabs to tab. Left most side has 3 tabs (top to bottom): 1) Save - This lets you save or load game from the 6 save slots. Tap on the slot you want, on the left most side, top option=save middle option=load, bottom option=Lock/Unlock (if you choose to lock a save slot, the slot will display a little lock and you can't save onto this slot anymore. Unlock if you want to save over it again). Bottom right tab = Return. 2) History - Just a record of the conversations during the scene, I don't use it since I can't read it anyway. 3) Menu - this has 3 tabs on the left, and 4 big tabs. Left 3 tabs = Help - gives you instructions on how to do battles, etc Glossary - description of places/people you meet, etc Setting - same as Setting option at the start screen The 4 big tabs are important, since you use them in game. At game start, all of them are deactivated. They get unlocked as the story progresses. I'll over this in detail in the Battle System section. They're in a diamond shape like the following: Characters Spells Special Abilities Formation The remaining 3 tabs: The mirrored Play button on the very right that moves, you tap to go to the next line in the conversation. Pressing A also has the same effect. The mirrored Play button in the middle, you tap to turn on automatic mode, so the conversation will proceed without you tapping. Finally, the fast forward button in the middle is the Skip button, use it to skip conversations you already read (i.e. if you load to pick a different choice, but they say the same thing, you can just skip). --------------4.2.2. Starting events---------------- So the North and South God starts a little argument. The weaker South God decided to foil his older brother's plan. And the story starts. Doesn't matter who the heroine is, story always starts by explaining a little background, and introduces you to the Star Child (different for each game, but serves same purpose) (for Gen 3 miko, it's the Black Dragon Priestess). You can tap on the "Character information" that pops up whenever you meet a character from the other harukanaru games. First question that pops up is if the heroine wants to hear a description about her 8 guardians. Left choice=No, it's okay. Right choice=Sure, let me hear it. (Either choice is fine, just whatever you prefer) 2nd question: Who do you want to call over? Left choice=Let the Star Child decide for you, Right choice=Heroine decides. (Heroine decides will increase the friend level of the person she picks, doesn't really matter, since friend level is really easy to build in this game compared to the original.) 3rd question: Anything else? If you pick the Left Choice, then the plot goes on, if you pick the Right Choices, then you get more conversations pertaining to the story from the earlier games. When you think you've read enough, pick the Left choice to continue with the plot. Heroine goes to sleep and wakes up in a mysterious world. She thinks it's a dream, but she can't wake up from it. After she calms down, she takes a look around and eventually meets the guardian she chose in question 2 and the guardian's partner (like I mentioned before, the 2 guardians corresponds to each mystical creature, 4 mystical creatures total: white tiger, phoenix, dragon, and snake/turtle hyrid thingy). After the two guardians chat with the heroine, she gets a conversation with the dragon god, saying basically, unlike the other games, he can't take her between worlds. Next, the heroine runs into 2 guardian pairs belonging to the other two mikos. They explain they're here because their miko seems to be here too, and they join your party. Opening up acess to the Character, Spells, and Formation tab in the Menu section. Go into Menu, set up your Formation wheel (see Battle System Section). Then battle! Monster: Random Boss (Might be related to who your starting pair is, might be whichever element your guardian pair is strong against). Tips: Easy battle, all battles in this game is easy btw. After this battle, the guardian requests the miko to seal the monster, but since she's not in her own world, she fails. More importantly, the Special Abilities tab opens up, so you can use it to heal your party, but since mine didn't take any damage from the battle, just ignore it for now. Heroine gets taken into the North Star God's throne room. In the next series of questions/answers, just pick whatever you want, doesn't really matter, but you can always save and load at each question point if you like seeing all conversations. At the end, the North Star God tries to capture the Heroine, but she breaks out with the guardians and some help from the South Star God. The South Star God takes the heroine out of the North Star Palace. Either choice to the question. Head towards the twinkling blue dotted area on your lower DS screen (South Star Palace). On the big map on the top DS screen, the light blue dots corresponds to the twinkling blue dotted areas that progresses the story. Twinkly blue dots just mean an event will occur might not progress plot. After the South Star God explains the situation to the heroine and guardians, and she's back on the world map. She's free to do whatever she wants until the end! Just keep a few things in mind. Monsters now pop up on the map, hard to avoid since you don't control Miko's movement on the map, but can always use monster keep away Special Ability (see Spell/Ability info, to see who can use this special ability). Blue dots progress story, Pink dots (dream boxes) to add friendship levels (default level = 3, after each dream box, 2 or 3 more open up for the heroine to fill, the guardians from a different time can only get 5 star levels max). --------------4.2.3. Free Time---------------- It's not really free time. More like time you can do anything in any order before you hit the end of the game. Or you can just choose not to do all of it and just progress through the game. Either way, everything you need should be in this section. Anyway, I'm making an ascii map that gives relative locations. I'm making 1 map for the center region, north & south regions, then 2 maps for the western and eastern regions ('cause they're too long length-wise :( ). I also left out dream box spots, because they're obvious, since they're pink dots that show up on the giant map anyway. ***************************************************************************** 4.2.3.a. Quick Finish Path ***************************************************************************** So with your free time, you say forget collecting things, just want to finish the game doing minimal everything (you actually get a different ending). Then just do the following: 1) Follow the first blue dot. Get a talk talk scene about which guardians are trapped in the doors. 2) I think you have to destroy all 3 glowing doors. 3) Continue forward through the door, until you get to the the next door (if you get a message, that means you don't have the guardians necessary to get through, so change a door). Just keep going in the direction (i.e. if you headed South, keep going south). Eventually, heroine gets ported back to the South Star Palace. 4) Head to the blue dot that's furthest along the edge (the Mystical Creature temple). Get to the temple, kill the creature and after entering the port back to North Star Palace 5) Enter the palace and finish the game. Since the Ending is different if you choose this path, make sure you read carefully about what happens for this path vs full collection path in the Ending Section. ***************************************************************************** 4.2.3.c. Optional Things to Do ***************************************************************************** Here's a List of Optional Things to Do: 1) Collect all 24 guardians Visit all the doors with the blinking blue to collect your guardians 2 guardians per door plus a boss fight :) (An interesting fact: the names of the doors are the names of the Earthly Branches, which corresponds to the Chinese hour names on the ancient Chinese clock and each also corresponds to an animal on the Chinese Zodiac.) 1.1. To the West Sei Door Guardians: Yuzuru Arikawa, Kajiwara Kagetoki Boss Element: Water (Opposing Element: Earth) Nishi Door Guardians: Fujiwara no Yukitaka, Hisui Boss Element: Metal (Opposing Element: Fire) Shin (Tatsu) Door Guardians: Fujiwara no Takamichi, Tachibana no Tomomasa Boss Element: Metal (Opposing Element: Fire) 1.2. To the North Kai Door Guardians: Eisen, Abe no Yasuaki Boss Element: Water (Opposing Element: Earth) Shi Door Guardians: Minamoto no Motomi, Abe no Yasutsugu Boss Element: Water (Opposing Element: Earth) Ushi Door Guardians: Taira no Atsumori, Ridvan Boss Element: Earth (Opposing Element: Wood) 1.3. To the East In Door: Guardians: Minamoto no Yorihisa, Tenma Morimura Boss Element: Wood (Opposing Element: Metal Buu Door: Guardians: Minamoto no Yoritada, Taira no Katsuzane Boss Element: Wood (Opposing Element: Metal) Shin (Saru) Door: Guardians: Masaomi Arikawa, Minamoto no Kurou Yoshitsune Boss Element: Earth (Opposing Element: Wood) 1.4. To the South Bi Door: Guardians: Musashibou Benkei, Hinoe Boss Element: Water (Opposing Element: Earth) Go Door: Guardians: Isato, Akifumi Boss Element: Fire (Opposing Element: Water) Shi Door: Guardians: Inori, Shimon Nagareyama Boss Element: Fire (Opposing Element: Water) After collecting all guardians, the heroine gets to rest at South Star Palace, so continue on with the plot. 2) Collect Dream Boxes and Max out Friendship Levels This is entirely optional. However, if you want the heroine to not have a crummy solo ending, then collect those boxes. Head for Pink Dots on the giant map, and tap the box when it appears on the bottom screen. 2.1. First Boxes All guardians once they have 2+ stars filled, they will make a statement about emotions. That's when a pink dot appears on the Giant map. Head to the pink dot, save before answering/choosing an option. Make sure your choice makes a little star rise (instead of drop). That unlocks 2 more stars to fill. 2.2. Second Boxes Only the 8 guardians of the Miko's timeline get these. Once again, at 4+ stars, they will make a statement about emotions. New pink dot on the giant map. If you can't reach the pink dots yet, then progress the story line some more. Once again, save before choosing an option. This unlocks 3 more stars to fill. 2.3. Final Box Only the 8 guardians of the Miko's timeline get these also. At 7+ stars, these pink dots unlock. After the event (if you didn't choose an option that pisses off the guardian), the final 2 levels unlock. Lots of events and things give friendship level. The easiest way to max out Friendship level, just battle with the characters. Random battles give 6 total stars most of the time (if each of your 3 characters get 2 or more turns in, they all get 2 stars, if 2 character gets 2 turns in, and other 1 gets 1, then 2 w/ 2 turns get 2, 1 gets 1). Boss battles give 15 stars total, split between the characters that you use and if they took more than 2 turns. Don't run from battles unless you have to, because that decreases the friendship level of all 8 guardians on your Formation wheel. 3) Spell Collection Once again, entirely optional, but it's not hard to do. First, make sure you have the guardians that are needed to learn the spell. Also, need to be past a certain point in the story I think, I will check later on. Next visit the location that is needed to unlock the spell. Mainly, all the "fields" between the doors, the East Houses past the doors, and the Town Areas in each of the 4 sections. (For the East Houses & Town Area, have to visit 2 times, since there's 2 spells to learn there, just tap on the spot again to enter a 2nd time). See Spells section for exact location/guardian, etc. 4) Defeat all Door Bosses Seems totally pointless, except boss battles give 15 friendship stars and it opens up the door for traveling through from the 3rd screen. 4.1. To the West Sei Door Boss Element: Wood (Opposing Element: Metal) Nishi Door Boss Element: Fire (Opposing Element: Water) Shin (Tatsu) Door Boss Element: Water (Opposing Element: Earth) 4.2. To the North Kai Door Boss Element: Fire (Opposing Element: Water) Shi Door: Boss Element: Metal (Opposing Element: Fire) Ushi Door: Boss Element: Water (Opposing Element: Earth) 4.3. To the East In Door: Boss Element: Wood (Opposing Element: Metal) Buu Door: Boss Element: Earth (Opposing Element: Wood) Shin (Saru) Door: Boss Element: Wood (Opposing Element: Metal) 4.4. To the South Bi Door: Boss Element: Water (Opposing Element: Earth) Go Door: Boss Element: Metal (Opposing Element: Fire) Shi Door: Boss Element: Fire (Opposing Element: Water) 5) Defeat the 4 mystic creatures Yay, strongest summons in the game. The mystic creatures are in their respective temples in the 4 main directions. 1) Seiryuu (East) Element: Wood (Opposing element: Metal) 2) Suzaku (South) Element: Fire (Opposing element: Water) 3) Genbu (North) Element: Water (Opposing element: Earth) 4) Byakko (West) Element: Metal (Oppposing element: Fire) That's pretty much it. --------------4.2.4. Ending---------------- Make sure your friendship levels with all the characters are where you want them to be. Because there is no going back once you decide to start the final set of events. So when ready, travel to the North Star Palace, either via the ports at the furthest corners of the world or just walk to the main palace. You get asked if you are prepared: Need a bit more time (Left choice) or I am prepared (Right Choice). Left choice ports you back to the world map. If you pick "I am prepared" then just fight until the end of the game, game over if you runaway from battles or die. So storm into the palace. And a palace guard tries to stop you. Boss Battle: Palace Guard Element: Fire or Metal (random I think) (just water or fire your way through) Tada, after the battle, you find the other Mikos. The guardians have their reunion with their mikos and thank the heroine for her help. ++Here the ending splits (if you did fastest path, the South Star God will also greet you, and you get a different boss)++ So the group decides to go help South Star God now that they're all reunited. Choose whichever choices you want, all leads to the Dream Bridge. ++++If choose the fastest path, next part is for you, otherwise skip to &&& At the Dream Bridge, the 3 mikos notices a lot of monsters, fight them! Boss Battle: Monster Group Element: Earth (not sure if that's random or not, use oppsing element Wood or whatever if the element isn't Earth) After the battle, the 3 mikos work together to seal the monsters away for good. The North Star God comes and the South Star God tells him off. Mikos all go home (you get solo ending). The End (just 1 more thing, see below after the other path's The End!) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ &&& At the Dream Bridge, you meet North Star God (except don't mind the fact his orbs changed to light blue...). So fight him! Boss Battle: North Star God? Element: Wood (Opposing element: Metal) Oh, oops, so that was the South Star God your group just beat up. Oh well, mikos calm down and decide to fight North Star God for real this time. Boss Battle: North Star God Element: Water (Opposing element: Earth) So defeated North Star God, and South Star God recovered already (good to be a god). Anyway, this time, South Star God finally convinces North Star God to let the mikos go home and such. Before that though, South Star God asks if the Mikos want to stay a little while longer to party. Save here if you don't go to the party. I should get back home (Left choice) or I'd be happy to stay (Right Choice). Pick the Stay Choice for a few more cutscenes, or just pick go home (pick a guardian to go back with for the success cutscene). Finally after the party, the mikos bid farewell, and the other guardians come to bid farewell too if the heroine is their friend. After all the farewells, South Star God asks heroine if she'll come play in the Dream World again. Save here!!! So you don't have to redo fights to get the 8 different guardian endings 3 Choices: Rightmost: Probably not, leaving with the 8 guardians Middle: I have Miko responsibilies still Left: Sure, promise I will. If you pick the Rightmost and Middle choice (I don't see how the result is different, someone can correct me if I'm wrong), you get to choose a guardian to get an ending with. If you pick the Left choice, you get an ending with the North and South Star Gods. Pretty funny :). The End! -- Just 1 more thing! At the end, of the end credits and end cutscene, you get a prompt to save the game. Do so in a different slot, load it and travel away from the center area. The heroine hears someone calling her. Head to the new pink dot on the giant map. You get an extra bonus Dream box event. :) For the Generation 1 & 2 Miko, it's the villian from her game, pretty neat. Miko 3 gets 2 extra boxes. Well, just enjoy. That's it. :) Now replay with a different heroine, or just call it a day. ============================================================================= 5.
